View Full Version : Do you think this is a misprint?

I have a recipe for a simple, baked sweet potato. The ingredients portion reads:

1 Tbsp. packed brown sugar
1 Tbsp. granulated sugar
1 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
1 Tbsp. butter or margarine
1 medium-large sweet potato

Doesn't that seem like a lot of cinnamon? Do you think it should be 1 teaspoon or even less?

I would say they should all be 1 teaspoon except maybe the butter could be 1 tbsp (if you like butter).

I think Pine Tree is right about all of them being tsp. And personally I would skip the granulated sugar. Occasionally I'll add a touch or nutmeg as well.

Something like this is all about your personal taste preference so you really don't need a recipe at all.

That does seem wrong to me.

I generally just do a T of brown sugar and a dash of cinnamon. You might find the combo of brown sugar + granulated sugar to be way too sweet and syrupy. It would depend on your taste but that would be way too much sugar for me to enjoy the sweet potato.

Thanks for the suggestions. Sweet potatoes are a food I'm trying to like despite having hated them for my whole life, so I am just a little nervous about having them turn out right.

I'll try out the teaspoon version, but reduce the cinnamon to a dash maybe?

A dash is fine. You can always add more if you want.

We do SPs as mashed potatoes. Once they've been baked, we scoop them out, add a bit of heavy cream (or just milk), butter, a pinch of salt, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix it all together (like you would for regular smashies), taste as you go, add more of whatever as you like.

Then, we put it in a small corning ware (or other glass or ceramic baking dish) sprinkle a little more brown sugar with a touch of butter over the top and put it in the broiler for a minute or two to carmelize. Oh so good! :D

There are some great sweet potato recipes out there: I make a great soup with 2 boiled (or baked) sweet potatoes, 2Tbsp grated ginger, salt and pepper to taste, 1/2 can coconut milk and 1-2 cups chicken broth -- simmer together and then top with a spoon of yogurt or sour cream and some grated cheddar.

Good luck! I would start easy with the cinnamon and then add to taste.

Thank you both, ignutzz and Pine Tree, for those recipes! I added them to my "sweet potato recipes to try" list.

I ended up doing the tsp with just two shakes of cinnamon and they turned out perfect.

Thanks again for your help!

I make teice baked sweet potatoes. Onced they are baked, I scoop out the filling and mix with butter a little milk, fluff, brown sugar and a dash of cinnimon. Then sprinkle a little more brown sugar on stuffed potatoes and bake a little longer.
