View Full Version : Disaster/Emergency Kit for Pets
After our last little earthquake last week I've decided to get serious and finally get to work on our emergency kit. Any idea on what to include for pets - cats & dogs? I mean what's the shelf life on pet food? And wouldn't you need a bowl to put the food and water into?

Hey Katy, here's a link (http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pets_emergency)from the ASPCA's disaster preparedness section.
I'm pretty remiss in all of the prep stuff. Good reminder to stay prepared!
ETA: If you don't want to store a big bowl, I know I've seen collapsible travel bowls at Petsmart and the like for people who hike with their pets.

I was going to start this same thread!
We're going up to our property next week and have never taken the pup so i want to make sure if anything happens while hiking or swimming we're prepared.
Does anybody who hike a lot with their pup have any other advice on things to bring?

We car-camped in Canada a few weekends ago. We always bring Daisy's "bag" with us and it includes a lot of things, including: benadryll, her sedatives, hydrogen peroxide, gauze, and vetwrap/co-ban.
We also alway bring dishwashing liquid and baking soda. That, along with the peroxide was a flippin' life saver, as the dog got sprayed by a skunk. We were able to sleep in the same camper with her without coughing from noxious fumes.
I had asked the pet store owner (small, family store) what I should pack and she couldn't think of anything beyond food. Well hello, I knew that much  So this is very helpful indeed. I totally forgot about the harness - Griff walks so much better on a harness than on a leash. And I was wondering what the dish soap was for. Do I need a large amount or can I just fill up a travel size shampooish container (he's a cocker-schnauzer)

Didn't see it on the ASPCA list (which is great, btw) but I think it is pruden to have photos of your pet(s) in the disaster kit, especially those with you. That way if you do get seperated from them (think Katrina) then it will be easier to id your pet and id you as the owner...

It depends on how many times one needs to bathe their dog. Direct hit = more baths; glancing spray = one bath. But, the short answer is that a shampooish container should work in most cases. At least, it'll get you through a couple of days.
