We just received a care package of Penzey's (http://www.penzeys.com/) spices from a friend, and now we've been flipping through the catalog and the website to see what else we want to try. What are your favorite Penzey's spices, and what do you use them for?

Hey, good thread... they just opened a retail store here in town. I haven't gone there yet, but would be curious to know what's worth the extra price.

I love Penzeys--everything is so fresh and fragrant.
Herbes de Provence is my favorite right now, on fish, chicken and pork.

I love Penzeys and I use a lot of their spices. My husband likes to put their mint hot chocolate mix in his coffee. I use the Northwoods seasoning when I grill chicken breasts. I like their breakfast sausage seasoning and their chicken taco seasoning. I use their chile powder in varying heats/strengths, but I also like their chili selection - dried and ground. Their cinnamons are excellent. They have a very popular double vanilla extract, and I also bake with their other extracts (almond, lemon, orange).
I used to order from them occasionally, but now I can visit them on my lunch break, and I've become a little addicted. ;)

I love Penzeys. I've been getting all my spices there for years even though there isn't a store close by. I'm about to put in an order right now, here's what's on my list, these are all refills btw.
Kosher Salt
Arrowroot
Chili powder
thyme
Oregano
Sliced Onions
Peppercorns
Cajun Seasoning
I think that after you buy the spices in the glass jars that if you buy refills in the bags they aren't really that much more expensive.

Love me some Penzey's! Like Sarah, I've been ordering my spices from them for years, but have yet to actually go to a store.
My favorite blend of theirs is Sunny Paris, it's salt-free and I love it on scrambled eggs and on sandwiches.
I've never heard of Penzey's
Off to investigate . . .

Have any of you tried the Sandwich Sprinkle, Italian sausage seasoning, or Tuscan Sunset? I've been looking at those...

Another Penzey's fan!
I like their peppercorns, chinese cassia cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice and their curry. Oh, their crushed pakistani red pepper is good, too.

I got the wedding gift box 2 years ago, and love it! I gave away a few of the spices I rarely use, but I really enjoyed using what I kept.
I just checked out the website and I'm intrigued by the apple pie mix. sounds wonderful.

strwbrygirl ~ The Sandwich Sprinkle makes awesome homemade croutons. I used a whole jar just doing that, never used it on anything else. I haven't tried the other two you asked about though.
Trinidad Lemon Pepper seasoning is wonderful on salmon!

cynder - That's so cool that Penzey's is from your hometown! I have the Adobo seasoning, but have yet to use it. How do you use it?

We use:
Garden Salad Seasoning & butter spray on a baked yukon gold. HEAVENLY. I dont know why, but this is da bomb.
Curry in couscous. We have the hot, but it's pretty hot, for me at least. I added some mushrooms and peas in it, and didn't spice the salmon too heavily and that cut the heat a bit.
Northwoods, Barbecue of the Americas, and Galena Street Rub on Chicken, pork, etc.
I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them off the top of my head. Seriously, though, get some Garden Salad Seasoning. It's great sprinkled on green beans, too.

I went to Penzey's in Houston over the weekend. I was there for the holiday weekend visiting my sister and she had a catalog on her table. So I had to go there of course. Here's what I picked up:
Galena Street Rub
Greek Seasoning and Salad Dressing
Creamy Peppercorn Salad Dressing
4/S Special Seasoned Salt
Florida Seasoned Pepper
Jerk Chicken/Fish Seasoning
I can't wait to cook up a bunch of stuff just so I can use them all. :)

You can download their catalog on their site. Is this the one you are looking for? I copied and pasted it from the Holiday 2007 catalog.
Egg and Bacon Casserole
This is a simple dish to put together for breakfast or brunch—don’t wait for a special occasion. Put it together
the night before and refrigerate it overnight to allow the eggs to soak into the bread. Simply pop it in
the oven in the morning. Sausage or diced ham may be substituted for the bacon.
1 lb. bacon
6 eggs
2 Cups milk
1 tsp. REGULAR MUSTARD POWDER
1 tsp. salt
1 Cup cheddar cheese, grated
6 slices of bread (we prefer fresh bakery
bread)
Grease a 9x13 glass baking dish and set aside. Fry
the bacon, drain on paper toweling, and cut into 1
inch pieces. Cube the bread into 3/4 inch pieces
and set aside. In a large bowl, beat the eggs. Add
the milk, REGULAR MUSTARD POWDER, salt, and
blend well. Stir in the bacon, cheese, and bread
cubes. Stir well to combine. Pour the mixture
into the baking dish, cover with plastic wrap, and
refrigerate overnight. Preheat the oven to 350° and
bake for 1 hour.
Prep. time: 15 minutes, Cooking time: 1 hour,
Serves: 8
