I've had bad toenails on my large toes since teen years. When I was a teen on vacation, I was standing on the dock and my uncle snuck behind me an pushed me in, but my toes were stuck between the slots of wood (it's a homemade family dock) and it tore off my two large toenails. They grew back, but since then, every so often when it gets long enough, I get black or green around the corner nailbed or on the side under the nail. Usually I'd clip my nails and it'd be dead and just flake off and I'd scrape the green stuff off myself. (I know that's bad, but it got rid of it, and I thought it was just bad skin or something.) About 5 years ago, one got infected under my skin and my podiatrist clipped the 1/4 of nail down to the nailbed and pulled it out. You can hardly tell now and nothing's happened to that side since. The other foot now had a dark spot on my toenail, I clipped it, but my nail grew back awkward and I go back again tomorrow to probably have him do the same thing, since it's purple and pussy.
Now that I've grossed you all out, does anyone else have this problem? I know there's rx for nail fungus, but it's not a constant problem.

omg I have no suggestions but it sounds so incredibly painful!! My toe nails grow in too wide for my nail bed so I have to cut them at an angle and keep them really short. I wonder if you can get a script for the fungus?

I know there are medications you can get, but my problem isn't all the time. I hate taking meds if you don't need it (prescriptions or something).
I ended up having the surgery. When I had the first one a few years ago, I never got black spots in there again, so hopefully it's the same. And it was only ever these two toes. Pretty gross.
The dr. said it happens because my bones in my two big toes are too long. He said it's an "extended" something. They're a little longer than most and curve inward slightly. So it's the inside of the toenail that gets the problem. He actually said that 20 or so years from now, I'd have problems with my toes, becasue of the extra length or something. Weird.
