I want to get a pedicure tonight, but my legs are a little prickly. (haven't shaved in two days :o You can barely see anything) I live too far away from the nail place to go home, shave, and come back.

Do you shave your legs before a pedicure, or have you gone with prickly legs before?

it kind of depends. If I've been to the place before and I know what products they use, I might or might not (depending on the products). My regular "deluxe" pedicure place regularly uses salt scrubs, but if you're just shaved, they switch it out and just use a different, non-salt product. Just be sure to let them know if you just shaved. My regular "cheapie" place doesn't use any scrub - just lotion - so there's nothing to worry about.

I just read that for health and safety reasons it is best not to shave your legs at least a day before getting a pedicure. It was online somewhere, most likely MSN. So I would just shave the day before.

I don't because the scrubs can really hurt if you've just shaved.

I never thought of the lotions/supplies they use! Hmmm, that's good to remember. I just always shaved so they didn't see my stubbleys everywhere. I do it when I go to doctor appointments too. I don't know, just a thing.

That's funny that you posted this, I am going to get a pedicure after work today. I was debating on going home at lunch to shave (shaved yesterday, not this morning)...maybe I won't! I never thought about it being a problem.

I don't but I generally like to do the salt scrub so I avoid shaving because of that. I also occasionally do a 1/2 leg wax with my pedis so sometimes I grow out a bit on purpose before going.

Yes I do but typically I'll shave that morning and then get a pedi in the evening.

Usually the night before because of the salts!

I was going to say I bet they wouldn't care. Whenever I go and haven't shaved, I always tell myself that they've probably seen MUCH worse!

Never. I usually go in with a day or two of growth. They've done studies showing that the places that use "Swirl footbaths" (i.e., that don't use large bowls of water to soak your feet) have a lot of bacteria that breed in the "traps" that are supposed to keep hair, etc. from going down the pipes. So not only am I scared to shave right before a pedi, but I try to find places that use the large bowls instead of the swirling footbaths.

I recomend NOT shaving.

Our local news *just* did a story on a woman who got a SEVERE infection from the foot baths because she had a small nick (she herself didn't even realize it)--she was hospitalized, they don't know what the infection is, and she is at home now, but hooked up to IVs 24/7. . . . and the pedi that caused this was over a full year ago!

It's rare, but it does happen. I'd rather be a little scruffy than take a risk.

I shave my legs everyday so even if I did get a pedicure my legs were shaved that day. I never ran into problems.

I do usually but have gone with a days growth. I don't think they really care as long as you are paying them!

Honestly, I've never even thought about it. I shave a few times a week, so if my urge to get a pedi coincides with stubble-free legs it is purely coincidence. Personally, I think toes and feet are way more disgusting than stubbly legs - if they can deal with feet surely hairy legs aren't an issue!

I actually purposely don't shave my legs the day of a pedicure due to the bacteria problems mentioned previously....I'm not like hairy-gross or anything - just 1/2 days of growth. Not taking any chances....

100% agree! Unfortunately, many people won't take precautions until it happens to them. For me, it was enough to see a CNN special last year about the bacteria and how prevalent it is. No sense of having painful pus filled boils all over my legs over a pedicure!

I usually shave in the morning before I leave for work, and get my pedi at the end of the workday...usually because I remember to shave at the last minute. FWIW, stubble I can deal with...however a week of growth is too much for me. Also, the massage feels much better for me when my legs are shaved (and I notice they massage longer, too!)

No, because they use a salt scrub...
