View Full Version : What's Your Walk Score? (This is interesting!)

I saw this while browsing online and thought it was really interesting. Google has a feature called Walk Score (http://www.walkscore.com/). It takes your home's address and calculates how "walkable" your neighborhood is. It finds all the stores, schools, public spaces, etc. nearby and also takes into account things like speed-controlled streets, accessibility, and whether or not your neighborhood has a central area. It then calculates a score based on its findings.

Your Walk Score is a number between 0 and 100. The walkability of an address depends on how far you are comfortable walking- after all, everything is within walking distance if you have the time. Here are general guidelines for interpreting your score:

90 - 100 = Walkers' Paradise: Most errands can be accomplished on foot and many people get by without owning a car.
70 - 90 = Very Walkable: It's possible to get by without owning a car.
50 - 70 = Some Walkable Locations: Some stores and amenities are within walking distance, but many everyday trips still require a bike, public transportation, or car.
25 - 50 = Not Walkable: Only a few destinations are within easy walking range. For most errands, driving or public transportation is a must.
0 - 25 = Driving Only: Virtually no neighborhood destinations within walking range. You can walk from your house to your car!

What's your walkability score? Click here to find out (http://www.walkscore.com/)

My house got a 74. I was actually a little surprised by this, because even though I'm in an urban area with a lot of things nearby, it would be pretty difficult to get by without a car here and -to be honest- we don't really walk all that much here, other than to get some exercise after dinner or pop up to Starbucks. We probably could (and should) walk more.

A lot better than I would've thought

Walk Score: 49 out of 100

Yup...in the country!

Closest place is the bar at .13 miles.

Our old Apartment:

Walk Score: 31 out of 100

My parents:

57 out of 100

The In-Laws:

Walk Score: 23 out of 100

Doesn't really surprise me - I live right smack downtown in a city that's pretty pedestrian friendly in general. I do walk almost everywhere and wouldn't even consider owning a car right now. :)

My score is 32, and even the places listed were a farther walk then I would like, 1.45 miles+

salysaturn, don't feel bad. My house got a 45 and I live in a suburb of Houston.

45. We can (and do) walk to the library and the 7-11 across the street from it, but that's it.

It is interesting though, I would figure my moms would be nice, but even her house scored low.

Wow PookiePrincess...I would think you'd be up there, I guess it is factoring in if you live towards the back of a neighborhood..assuming you live in a large area of homes.

How strange - I got 57 and live in an enormously walkable area. It's flat as a pancake! We run many errands on foot. Perhaps it thinks a mile is too far to walk?

08-07-2007, 09:22 PM
31. There's a coffee shop and a couple bars within a half mile, but everything else is over 2 miles. And it's true, we almost never walk anywhere. (Also, there are no sidewalks in my neighborhood.)

Hmm, says mine is 77. I DO live in a city, but not in a particularly good neighborhood. I *could* walk to some of the places that they listed, but I wouldn't. Like the bar that has a big sign out front that it opens at 7 in the morning...

PookiePrincess

We have a lot of busy streets that I would never cross on foot (and a lot of crazy drivers), and I know that's a big part of it.

Very interesting.

Our current house got 68 out of 100. We are in a SF Bay Area suburb and everything listed was less than .5 mile. Our previous apartment was in San Francisco and got 92/100.

My parents live in the 3rd largest city in CA but their house only scored 11/100.

72 out of 100.

That surprises me, I would have thought my neighborhood was alot more walkable. I do quite a bit of walking, and what I can't walk to, I ride my bike.

No sidewalks here either. We walk around the neighborhood everynight, and have walked to the Shhetz, Dairy Queen...

Funny that the gym is over 7 miles, yet they did not list the Dairy Queen :)

69, and we either walk or take the bus everywhere. We do not own any cars. But DH and I will walk a lot farther than most people without thinking twice, since we'd both rather walk than wait for a late bus!

75. I'm shocked. But when I looked at the places it listed stores and restaurants that have been closed for a few years. It also didn't list a lot of restaurants, coffee places, etc that have been around for years.

That makes me believe that it's not very reliable.

JillyBean

0/100. Doesn't surprise me, though, since we live in the country, and there's nothing except a park nearby (that didn't even show up on the list).

08-07-2007, 09:50 PM
My home got a 66. We walk to the local coffee shop and the post office when we don't have a lot of packages. Other than that there are big hills & long distances to most other locations, so we drive.

AusAshMommy

RE-Did typing out the name of the street: 51/100...not too bad, we do have several shops right around the corner, but the closest restaurant is a DQ two blocks up and three over...not too shabby

And our apartment got the same score...we're really close to the mall still so I can see how that would get us the results we have...

My 'rents house is 35/100...which doesn't surprise me because they are literally in the middle of a field

GoCougs
08-07-2007, 10:04 PM
My house got a 68. I have to wonder how accurate this truly is, because it didn't include the grocery store that's right across the street from my house when calculating closest stores. Still pretty cool, though!

sublime311
08-07-2007, 10:15 PM
My address scored a 2/100. I live in a new subdivision in an area of town that is just expanding. My closest grocery store is about 7 miles away. We have a gas station and food place near by, but even that is a mile away.

petdoc08
08-07-2007, 10:16 PM
52. I think it is pretty accurate except the site considered the gas station a restaurant and we have no sidewalks.

snapdragon
08-07-2007, 10:22 PM
we got a 5 but could never walk anywhere useful because of the steep hills. There are a lot of walking trails along the river, but nothing that takes you to anywhere useful. The closest place is a pub that is 2 km away.

Mine was a 40. I think that's awfully low though, considering we live within a half mile of the commuter train. I walk most places.

My parents' house, OTOH, is a 0. The closest store is 4.5 miles away, so walking for anything other than exercise is pretty difficult.

We got a depressing 20. It's true that it's difficult to walk to stores or restaurants, although we do walk around our neighborhood a lot.

One day, I'd love to live in a more walkable neighborhood again.

08-07-2007, 11:04 PM
My house got a 68. That sounds about right. There certainly are plenty of options (coffee shops, groceries/market, cafes, etc.) within walking distance. I still often drive simply because my neighborhood is extremely hilly. I also am likely to drive to someone's house in my neighborhood not because it's too far to walk but because if I plan on staying until after dark I don't want to walk home. In general though my neighborhood is very walkable/bikeable and a lot of people do stay on foot within the actual neighborhood.

LRL
08-08-2007, 12:52 AM
Ali- We got a 63, we're right in the center of the city. :p

I am actually surprised that it isn't a higher score as well. We tend to walk everywhere, and would even grocery shop by foot if we didn't leave it for the last minute and need to buy out the store!

We got a 34. I'm not surprised, while we live in a midtown neighborhood, the actual location of our house is over 1/2 mile from everything and no sidewalks. Oh and the heat index was 114 yesterday, so no, I won't be walking to the grocery store!

43 for us. We live in a suburb of Baltimore, and while we do have a grocery store, liquor store, and Meadow's Custard Shop within walking distance, we only have to drive a short distance to get more things.

I get an error message every time I try to enter an address. What format are you guys entering addresses in? I've tried 123 Some Rd, Tallahassee, FL (and the same thing plus zip code); I've tried just Tallahassee, FL; nothing's working for me. I also tried the same variations on my parents' address (different city), and still had no luck.

IrishEyes

6. True. We walk around the neighborhood, but not to any stores or restaurants. The main road, which we are 1 mile from, is not something I'd walk on.

Our previous home, in the city, got 71. I think this is also a good reflection, since we did do a lot more walking around our neighborhood and to the grocery store that's half a mile away when it was nice. Heck, some weekends we would walk all the way around the Inner Harbor then take the water taxi back home.

elladee
08-08-2007, 06:40 AM
A whopping 22. We live just outside of town and do a ton of walking, but I guess most of it is walking for the sake of walking. I do think google missed a few things and it could be slightly higher. Like they missed the coffee shop I walk to all the time.

katmg
08-08-2007, 06:41 AM
46 - probably about right - we have a park one block away and we're not too far away from a very busy street with lots of fast food and restaurants. Too bad it's too hot and not so safe for walking.

amew
08-08-2007, 06:44 AM
62. About what I would expect. We live 3-4 miles from downtown, but there are a fair number of grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants, wine bars, etc. in our neighborhood that we can walk to. I put in an address downtown and got a 100.

boilermaker
08-08-2007, 06:50 AM
I got a 5, which doesn't surprise since we live in the country on a busy street with no sidewalks. I can walk to the gas station a mile or so down the road. I do run on the side streets off our street, so I wouldn't have a problem walking on them.

MidwesternGal
08-08-2007, 06:51 AM
We got a 58, but that should be a little lower.

Who walks 17 miles to the nearest bookstore or movie theatre??

We luckily do have a Pamida and grocery store nearby.

Hmm, says mine is 77. I DO live in a city, but not in a particularly good neighborhood.

My childhood home - in Queens, NYC - got a 77 too and really surprised me. We used to walk everywhere, especially the 1/2 mile to the subway each day. It was neat to see my childhood school - a block away - listed as a point of reference.

Where I live now: 43 - pretty much what I expected - pretty suburban

IL's - 37 - they're a bit more rural, but I would have expected their number would have been much lower than ours. Hmm.

My sister's family lives in Manhattan - they got a 98. :)

Hello Kitty
08-08-2007, 07:04 AM
Mine was a 57 - I was kind of suprised b/c our town is only a few miles across, so everything's really walkable. But I guess it takes into account the one grocery store and two restaurants.

Our old neighborhood in Chicago was a 97, and it really was walkable - safe, busy, and lots of resources. But unfortunately the cost and quality of housing is much, much less than any perceived benefit of not having a car and gas.

3/100 for our current house. Everything is over a mile and a half away. I can't say that I'm surprised. We live in a sub-division of a smallish Midwestern city.

Our old house had a score of 37/100, which is a bit better. That house was in the older part of the city, but some of the things the site had listed were places we'd never go (for instance, the closest library to this house was at the local Jewish temple).

j*east
08-08-2007, 08:12 AM
I'm not sure how accurate this is. I got a 34 for our present home, in the country. A few stores were mislabeled--apparently there's a Walgreen's .13 miles away, but unless they've hidden it in the cornfields, it doesn't exist.

Our past home, around the block from a grocery store and strip mall, got an 18.

My parents' old house where I grew up got a 71, which is pretty accurate, I'd say.

Here's their disclaimer:

How It Doesn't Work: Known Issues with Walk Score
We'll be the first to admit that Walk Score is just an approximation of walkability. There are a number of factors that contribute to walkability that are not part of our algorithm:
Street width and block length: Narrow streets slow down traffic. Short blocks make it easier to navigate the grid.
Safety: How much crime is in the neighborhood? How many traffic accidents are there? Are crosswalks well marked and streets well lit?
Pedestrian-friendly design: Are there walking paths? Are buildings close to the sidewalk with parking in back? Are sidewalks shaded by trees?
Topography: Hills can make walking difficult, especially if you're carrying groceries.
Public transit: Good public transit is important for walkable neighborhoods.
Freeways and bodies of water: Freeways can divide neighborhoods. Swimming is harder than walking.
Weather: In some places it's just too hot or cold to walk regularly.
As MarlonBain said, "You should use the Web 3.0 app called going outside and investigating the world for yourself" before deciding whether a neighborhood is walkable!

Kimberland30
08-08-2007, 08:15 AM
Our's got a 43/100. I'm not really surprised. Burger King, Dairy Queen and Dunkin Donuts are well within walking distance and I've walked there a few times (to ease my guilt), everything else is about a mile away. I have a bike but until I get a basket of some sort, I'll be running to the grocery store in my car.

jennylou
08-08-2007, 08:17 AM
We got a 29. Honestly, I'm surprised it ranked that high. There are things right near our house (3), which do help, but some of the other items they included I would never walk to. There aren't any sidewalks in front of my house and the speed limit is 40, with many routinely driving quicker than that. If someone is turning, and they don't want to wait, they will go into the lawn and go around them , so I wouldn't feel safe just strolling along in a yard either.

ETA:
Safety: How much crime is in the neighborhood? How many traffic accidents are there? Are crosswalks well marked and streets well lit?
Pedestrian-friendly design: Are there walking paths? Are buildings close to the sidewalk with parking in back? Are sidewalks shaded by trees?
Topography: Hills can make walking difficult, especially if you're carrying groceries.

Freeways and bodies of water: Freeways can divide neighborhoods. Swimming is harder than walking.

We do have crime and I wouldn't walk alone after dark. There are no crosswalks, you just run as quick as you can before the traffic comes. Walking paths? Sidewalks? What are those?
We have a lake behind us, and one of the walkable areas would actually be much further of a walk, but it looks super close. Not so when you take into account that there are only a few places to cross said river.

Ouch. Where I live got an 8! Awful! But we live right off a very busy main road that I definitely would not walk on unless I wanted to get hit by a car.

But that could be because I don't like outside. :p

My address got a 15, which was a little surprising considering there's a little shopping center (Taco Bell, Longs, sushi place, Vons, etc.) about a mile from my house. But maybe due to the busy roads, and no sidewalks they consider it unwalkable (although many people walk them every day).

my subdevelopment got a 46 - which is a bit higher than i thought. i guess they don't consider that to get to the nearest stores we would have to walk down an extremely busy road without sidewalks which is totally unsafe.

but i was more concerned to find out that i live ~2 miles from the "eye candy cinema". hmmmm. . .not sure that's a place i'm going to be frequenting. . .

I got a 3. We're currently living in a temporary apartment until our house is built, and it's at the northern end of a village of 3,800 people (it's bit farther out than what would be considered the suburbs of Madison, Wis.). The house we just sold in the same village scored a 29. It's about a mile from the apartment. The new house, in a different city, scores an 11. It's not that bad. This thing is pretty inaccurate.

35 out of 100.

I'm not surprised. While we're close to things in terms of hopping in the car, it's just a bit too far to walk there. However, it is a beautiful neighborhood for GOING for walks - without an intended destination. :)

Big fat 0 here (we're in a semi-rural subdivision, about a mile into the neighborhood). Closest place to me is a grocery/hardware store combo, 1.25 miles away. There's a golf course closer than that--which would be fine if I actually played golf.

There's a big shopping center about 2.5 miles from my house. Easily bikeable--if I didn't have to go on narrow, winding country roads to get to it. I doubt I'd make it there alive.

Tried to plug in the house where I grew up, but site's too busy. The score has to be somewhat better, considering that I made a habit of walking to the grocery store there. But for most things, I had to drive.

Interesting...our house scored a 22. We're in a semi-rural area off a state highway. The locations it claims are within walking distances assumes you'll take you life in to your hands and walk along the state route.

Suprisingly, my parents house scored a 9. They live in a planned community that has over 90 miles of paths and walking trails connecting each neighborhood to grocery stores, recreation, etc. I would have thought their community would score really high.

Wow my address scored only 37 or "not walkable", but I don't have a car and I walk everywhere! I've never felt like I was far from anything, I walk to work, to the mall, to the grocery store, library, convenience store, etc,... I've thought about getting a car but I don't feel I really need one so why put that damage on the enviroment? Alot of people drive way to much IMO.

There are quite a few things within walking distance, but our street is right off of a US highway (4-6+ lanes across) which isn't all that pleasant to walk on. And I *could* walk to the grocery store, but I'd have to cross ramps onto the interstate and walk over the bridge over the interstate to get there.

I tried my old address (neighborhood in downtown Baltimore) and that address got a 77, which I expected to be higher.

My office (in downtown SF) got 97... (I think we were dinged for not having a closer cinema, as that's the only thing over 0.3 miles away). Oh, and it messed up on the Clothing & Music category, calling the corporate office for a major chain a store.

Mine got a 12 out of 100 and I'm super surprised it ranked that low! I live in a suburb (the land of Microsoft), but it's definitely not a rural area. As far as commercial amenities, they aren't that close - the grocery store is about 2-3 miles, the park and ride is 1 mile, other restaurants/stores are 1-2+ miles.

Funny thing though is that there are TONS of walkers and bus riders in my neighborhood and any given night we go on a walk, we pass tons of other walkers/runners.

I guess it's right on. We can walk to two local Starbucks, two grocery stores (although neither is any good), a Barnes & Noble, and still within walking distance is an outdoor mall with goodies like VS, BR and AT (although this thing thought that distance would be too far to walk--and it is on hot days like today)

Right now I live in rural NJ and we just got a NINE out of 100!!!!!!

It worked for me on a different computer...I got a score of 9. The closest "school" it found is actually a pet-sitting service.

Although my city isn't very walkable, it does have bike lanes on many of the roads, and there are a lot of cyclists who use them.

0. I live in kind of a remote area of a suburb. There is nothing walkable - the closest store is 1.43 miles away but I would never walk down the street you need to go to it - hilly and windy and no sidewalks. And some of the mileage is wrong - they have a restaurant at 2 miles that is further away than the gas station my car says is 3 miles away.

My parents got 28. I knew they'd do better. There were a few places I would walk to as a child.

Ours is a 2. I ttally believe it. It is amazing that I walk as much as I do. Fortunately, dogs don't need to go anywhere except to go soemwhere, so the fact that we have no destinations near us does not matter when I walk my dogs. Sidewalks would be really nice, however. We can always dream!

I was surprised when our neighborhood got a 37 out of 100. I expected it to be better. I guess things are further away than I thought. But then, I wouldn't feel comfortable walking to the local supermarket or movie theatre.

Our old TH, from which we just moved, got a score of 74 out of 100. It was a pretty convenient area to live in. Oh well, I like my new neighborhood much better. And even though I lived in a more convenient neighborhood before, I never walked there. There were way too many busy streets.

0 out of 100. I am not too surprised since we live in a new suburb with barely anything nearby. Things are being built up around us, but there is still nothing within walking distance. Not that I have any desire to walk in 100+ degree temperatures.

My neighborhood only got only 14 which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, we are in a large development that has been around for about 6 years. I run every single morning, over 3 miles and there are many more miles I never see.

We have an 89 here. We don't own a car and I walk to the great majority of places, up to three miles away. I'm so relieved to see that the places we're moving to (Troy or Albany, NY), also score in the high 80s.

80 here

which is lower than I expected!? we have everything within walking distance and walk everywhere so thought it would have been higher for Brooklyn!

Larissa
08-09-2007, 04:32 AM
71 apparently - but that's just silly. We own one car between the two of us and could easily get by with none - we only own it for DH's job. We have 3 grocery stores in under 1/3 mile. Around 30 Indians, Chinese and Italian restruants in under 1/2 mile. Two parks, two libraries, easily over 20 pubs, a department store, and a train station within 2/3 mile. I would have put it higher.

Larissa
08-09-2007, 04:36 AM
Then again, I just typed in a friend's address who lives in zone 1 in London, England and walks everywhere (no car between the two of them) and she got an 80. So maybe it's just off for calculating England's cities :)

9 out of 100 and the majority of the places they listed don't exist. It listed a drug store, movie theatre and gym all which we don't have. It just confirmed that I live in the middle of no where! Funny I walk to work every day!

Finally able to plug in where I grew up...did better than where I am now. My childhood home got a 31 (my current home got a 0). It was in the city limits, but on the fringe. I think the walkability factor has improved since I lived there due to a coffee shop opening in the past couple of years less than a third of a mile away. But the nearest movie theater was an adult bookstore.

Honestly, I hadn't heard of some of the "closest places" on there. Maybe they've opened since I moved away from there.

I finally got it to work and scored a 12! What is weird though is that half of the stuff doesn't exist or is really located in another city half the state away! One of the parks and some of the stores are located in Sedona and I live between Phoenix and Tucson. Very odd.

My address got a 20. I'm not surprised, since I live in the burbs. The closest grocery store and drugstore are about 3/4 of a mile from my home. The only thing it seemed to miss was the township park that is adjacent to my property.

My suburban house: 38 (plus is the great greenbelt we have and lots of close schools, minus is the grocery stores)

My parent's mountain house: 2 (although they list a restaurant that is only .8 away - but that .8 would be bizitch to walk to and would require hiking boots.)

80, which really surprised me. I was sure we'd score higher. The only things we don't have between here and the Metro are a clothing store and a hardware store. And if you're willing to walk a little longer, you could find those, too.

Hilarious! I just entered my address in Australia, and was surprised that it showed an accurate map with my house pinpointed on it.

The second big surprise was that my neighbourhood got a 0!

It obviously couldn't find the post office, library, parks around the corner from my house, farmers market a 10 minute walk away, beach only 15, grocery stores, cafes and shops. I had to do without our car for 2 weeks (major repairs) last year with DS aged about 8 months, and was fine without it. I walked everywhere with DS, although I did feel a little bit of cabin fever, probably more psychological than anything.

I often joke to other friends in the neighbourhood that it's like that movie "The Village" and that we never leave;)

Mine was 23 out of 100, with the closest place .54 miles away, it's a deli that makes great zeps. But we don't have sidewalks on our road to actually walk to it, would have to walk on the road, not too safe with a baby, being pregnant and the crazy PA drivers.

Sorry, off topic, but what's a zep?

Ericka_Jarett
08-10-2007, 03:28 PM
Rosebud - apparently it's a PA thing, I never heard of them either until I moved here. Back in NJ we call them hoagies, others probably call them subs or something similar elsewhere in the US.

A zep is a little different than a sub would be though in that it doesn't have lettuce on it, just onions, meat, cheese. I always get mine with lettuce though and no onion (they must put like 1/2 an onion otherwise) The roll is what makes it the best though, it's not like a Subway or Quiznos roll, it's a bit harder. When I lived in CA was always hard to find a roll like these.

Our apartment got a 92, which I think is lower than it should be. Our closest park is missing and there's a big hill between us and the closest movie theater, otherwise everything is less than .22 miles away, most about .1 mile. We don't have a car of our own (car share), we walk or use public transit to get just about anywhere.

48. I would have thought that we would have gotten a higher score... maybe those who calculated it don't like to walk too far, because when I put in my old address about a mile from here, it gave that location a 84. Of course, when I lived there, I never walked, but now that I'm in a less "walkable area", I walk more.

18/100. I'm not surprised. We could walk to Publix and DD's little school but that's about it. And I wouldn't really walk to those since we don't have sidewalks. The mapping on that thing is nuts. It shows that the local library is 1.13 miles from our house. WTF. It also shows that it is directly across the interstate from us. True enough according to the overhead maps....But, and it's a big but. There's no way to go directly across the interstate to get to said library. Unless we care to risk life and limb to stroll to story time.

Angie

Mine is a 31, but some of their calculations are pretty far off. First of all, they list the donut shop around the corner as a grocery store. Also, they list the bookstore as 1.7 miles away, when I put it into Google Map, it's actually 3.4. I think they might be using direct point to point calculations which would take you through the middle of a golf course (I'm sure the golf course would be thrilled with me walking across).

We got a 46. What surprises me is that I have a grocery store (Safeway) about .5 miles away as well as a convenience store. They listed the corner store as a grocery store. Huh? FWIW, we do not live in a walkable negihborhood IMO.

My mothers: 45. Growing up we walked everywhere because my parents were stingy with driving us until we could drive ourselves.

My old address in So Cal, where most could not believe I did not have a car and walked/bladed/took public transportation: 75. It was really walkable.

I live in Israel, so I couldn't search for my neighborhood on this website.

I think my neighborhood is pretty walkable, and others seem to think so too, 'cause the sidewalks are always full of pedestrians!

It would be even more walkable if the pavement weren't so crappy on certain streets (although the municipality is working on that) and if people would be better about picking up after their dogs...

My parents' home (where I grew up) rated a 52. I don't know -- I walked to school and to the library (0.2 miles each) growing up. I thought they were conveniently located. And there were parks and playgrounds and we had yards to play in. But I guess my needs were different as a kid.

My town got a 2! I live in a new development, which is the furthest away from the city limits, and the closest thing to us is a Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, and Domino's within less than a mile.
I live in an extremely rural area as well.

We do have a metroparks system about a 5 min walk from my house. We go there frequently for walking, rather than walking to retail places.

I scored an 11. However, I would only go to 3 places that they listed. Somehow walking to the library of a biotech company doesn't seem very appealing ;). For grocery store, they have 7-11. . . Somehow they missed the large supermarket that's within walking distance.

I guess that's what you get when you live in suburbia.

I live in a mid-sized city. There's lots of great food, retail, libraries, and schools in about a 2-5 minute drive. However, that's only because they're all on a major road that I wouldn't suggest anyone walk on (speed limit 55, 5 lane, partial sidewalks). If there were sidewalks, it'd still be risky.
