we need a new mattress desperately. our's is totally bent out of shape and quite undomfortable. we are leaning towards a tempurpedic, so if you have experience with those let us know. also, let us know if you have any reccomendations of other brands. thanks.

I have a Simmons Beauty Rest pillow top, and I l-o-v-e LOVE it. :)

I'd heard a few horror stories about pillow tops....how they sag after a few years because you can't flip them, and it's total bunk. Our bed is just as comfortable and flat as it was 5 years ago when I bought it.

Sorry I can't offer any other help besides that...my previous mattresses were bought from discount chains and were junk.

I have a Garland by Masterpiece...which I believe is a division of Serta?

I got it from American Mattress. Quite pricey but worth it. I love my bed!

My parents have a tempurpedic and really love it. It's not for everyone, but they did a lot of research and testing. You really can't feel the other person move at all! (Good for my dad, the light sleeper, since my mom gets up at night sometimes.) The foam had a funky smell for the first month, but that went away. My DH and I have the pillows and LOVE them!! Make sure you go somewhere that offers discounts or free pillows as a deal.

We have a Kingsdown double pillow top (the actual name escapes me, but it was a girl's name like Ashley I think). We LOVE it. We love it even more than fancy Westin Heavenly beds and the like. It's really thick so exxxxtra deep sheets are a must. Since it's double pillow top you can flip it (and are recommended to do so). It's really squishy on top but quite firm inside, so you are getting the best of both worlds. It was $$$ but it was a lifetime investment for us. I miss it so much right now because I am away from home on business. :( DH and I have to set alarms on weekends because we sleep SO soundly that we have slept until noon in it. We got it at Mattress Giant in the Miami FL area.

We have the Tempurpedic and we've had for about 3 months (we got it in April). And we just love the bed! I agree with KerrBear comments on the smell, it did go away in just under a month. I just kept the windows open to keep the smell out. After that though its been great. I really like that when either me or my DH moves we don't feel it. Plus I like when I sleep on my side, my shoulders and arms aren't in pain or fall asleep. That happened a lot with our other mattress. Plus since they threw in the free Tempurpedic pillows too that's even better, plus ours are the king size so there are no gaps in the middle when we turn! I definitely think it was worth the investment! :D

Let me know if you have any other questions.

My parents got me a Verlo-made bed when I was a teenager, and I intro'd hubby to Verlo and now he loves them too. They only have showrooms available in about a dozen states, but ship nationwide, and they're worth every penny.

We have a Select Comfort (Sleep Number), and we love it! We did alot of research before purchasing it, and it's been one of the best purchases we've made. We like having seperate chambers so that we can adjust how firm we want our side to be. It is so comfortable and worth the money :)

We have a King Coil Visco Elastic Foam mattress. The Tempurpedic was too firm for us; I felt like I was trapped on the bed. I'm also a hot sleeper and the Tempuredic didn't allow enough air flow. The KC has various layers of foam including a super-soft pillow top that allows the air to circulate. When you sit on the bed if feels super-soft, but then you immediately settle into the countour firmness of the foam without feeling trapped. We are both soooo spoiled now :)

thanks ladies for the input!! yeah, we want a firm bed so a tempurpedic seems good from the comments people have said.

jillybean - for the sleep number bed, does it feel uncomfortable when you are snuggling your hubby on his side of the bed since his number would be different than your's?

btb - never heard of verlo. what is special about those beds?

ginandchris - i agree about the smell. my dh, actually, has a pillow and it did smell badly for a while. so, does the bed feel too hot when you sleep on it? did your's come with a boxspring and/or frame? did you buy your's online or go to a store?

Hi Rebjc--Here are the answers to your questions.

No, the bed doesn't feel too hot when you sleep on it. My DH did all the research and was really concerned with that, so he asked both the salesperson and a friend of ours (who just bought the bed and does work in a chiropractic office) about it. Our friend said it wasn't any warmer or cooler than a traditional mattress. So, with that in mind and the 3 month try out period we decided why not? For us, it has been just that not any warmer or cooler than a regular mattress. I

Since we didn't want to void the warranty we went ahead and bought the boxspring from Tempurpedic. We also requested a low profile frame and they got that for us too.

When we went to purchase it we bought it online. Since we live in Northern California we bought it from this website: www.tahoemattresscompany.com. We went with them b/c my DH liked that they don't charge salex tax or shipping. They also threw in our frame for free as well. The only difference from buying from them versus Tempurpedic directly is that Tahoe only gives a 90 day trial, while Tempurpedic does 120 days. Plus our friend that works in the chiro office bought from them as well.

Before buying we of course went to see it in person so we went to Brookstone 3 or 4 times to do so. Oh and we have the Deluxe version which is a little thicker mattress than the Classic.

Hope this helps! :D

Another vote for Select Comfort. My step-dad works for the company, and all of our extended family has the brand. They are fabulous, and so good for your body! :) At the very least, visit a store and let them give you a demonstration. They will let you lay on the bed and adjust the numbers. It doesn't feel weird unless you and your husband have DRASTICALLY different numbers... ours aren't that different, but they are different. But we played with it just to see.

Like Rennie said, I don't really notice much of a difference when we're on the same side of the bed. It feels slightly fimer, but it's hardly noticable and not uncomfortable. I'd also suggest going to a Select Comfort store (if you have once close by) and checking them out. We didn't have a store close by, but if we did, I'd imagine that we would have bought ours sooner ;)

btb - never heard of verlo. what is special about those beds?

Well, they don't have a 'gimmick' or trademark - no sleep number system, no NASA-designed foam, nothing like that. But but they're very well constructed, with premium materials, they last forever, and are super comfortable. They have a line of beds made entirely by hand in the U.S. www.verlo.com has lots of information. Happy hunting! :)

I second the Simmons Beauty Rest pillow top - we also LOVE ours!!!

We had one in other home before we moved and it became our guest mattress and we got another one when we got our new bed. They are so nice, they don't move when the other person moves and it makes for a much better sleep.

We really need a new mattress but for some reason keep putting off purchasing it.

So how did you pick your mattress - go to the store and lay down - can you really tell the differences between the mattresses? Did you go to various stores for the best deals?

Asha

they say you should lay on the bed for at least 15 minutes to decide if it's comfortable for you.

Bumping this up for more updated responses...DH and I are in the market for a new mattress. We both love the tempurpedic mattress but not so much on the price tag. We did see the Novaform mattress for about $500 at costco but there wasn't one that we could do a test lay on. :) Does anyone have a novaform? Or should we just suck it up and spend the $$ on the tempurpedic?

Emilie

Spend the money on the Tempurpedic. Seriously, our king size Tempurpedic is among best money we have ever spent! We both sleep so much better than before. I am 29 weeks pregnant and have had NONE of the problems so many pregnant women do - no shoulder or hip pain, I have very little insomnia. I really think that is because of the bed. Love, love, love our bed.

Plus, it has a great warranty and if you think about it, replace the bed every 7-10 years and pay $1000 or pay more and replace it after 15-20 years.

Some of the older posts mentioned the Simmons Beautyrest pillow top, and that gets my vote too. We bought ours right after we got married and moved into our apt. It is still the most comfortable thing ever, and I love not having to flip it. I highly recommend it!

Thanks so much for your thoughts on this!

Emilie, I am leaning towards the tempurpedic. Another thing that is holding me back though, is that I've heard some folks say that it's really warm. DH just radiates heat- great when it's winter, not so much during the summer...When we talked to the sales guy about our concerns, he stated that the newer models have some sort of middle layer that allows for air flow. The older models do not have this middle layer. Do you have any issues feeling hot at night? Congrats on the lil one, BTW. I had a terrible time sleeping towards the end of my pregnancy. Its great to hear that the tempurpedic has helped you with that!

rachrich, I think we tried a few pillow tops. Not sure if any of them were the simmons beautyrest. I liked a couple of them but DH prefers a firmer mattress. Do you know if these come firm? I don't have my heart set on the tempurpedic and if we can find a simmons beautyrest that DH likes, we may go with that option.

Thanks again!

i started this thread, and i never updated what we did end up buying.

we got a sealy posturpedic which is just like the tempurpedic. it doesn't only have the the foam mattress on half of the bed, but its a fully foam mattress.
its a few hundred less than the tempurpedic brand.

we love our mattress. dh was having a lot of back problems with the old mattress and wanted a firmer mattress. he was set on having a tempurpedic type bed. i really wanted a pillow top. i am glad we went with the tempurpedic. it feels so good when i go to bed each night, and my dh doesn't have any more back problems. like emilie, i have had no insomnia throughout my pregnancy. i have had some pain in my hips and thighs,

For those who have the Tempurpedic (or a copycat), how long have you had your bed? If you've had it for close to a year or longer, I'm interested in knowing how well it has held up. My experience with spring mattresses is that it takes close to a year before the dips form and it becomes uncomfortable.

I was worried about this too because I am the one who is always hot. We absolutely sleep with fewer layers now that it is summer - now we are basically using a sheet and a light coverlet - but it hasn't been bad by any means and in the winter it was great! Getting out of bed in the middle of the night wasn't awful because it stayed warm. We bought ours in October so not sure if it is a new model or an old one but that really isn't something that either DH or I would complain about!

Sorry I'm late chiming in. We've had a Dormia foam mattess for over 7 years now, and still love it. It's been so long since we had a spring mattress that I can't really recall if it's warmer, but I guess it is a bit. We love it so much!!

We're actually now shopping for a new bed - we want a king size (we have a queen) - and we're going with the same brand again. The website is abed.com. There are also stores, but we're not close to one now.

We are looking for a new bed too - now that my 12 year old waterbed died.

We actually bought the Sleep Number 5000 bed and sent it back after two weeks! Both of us felt like we'd been in a car accident after sleeping on it. Yep, I played with the sleep number up and down too. It made no difference.

I even bought the "NASA inspired" memory foam mattress pad and while it was cushy, it was super hot. I ended up ripping it off.

We are going to look for a traditional spring mattress. Its so not fun shopping for beds!

We just got a 6" tempurpedic pad for our existing mattress. The cat hates it b/c it's too dense per square inch and he doesn't sink in anymore. :) I'm still waiting for it to acclimate so I haven't slept on it. But I did lay on it, and it's pretty impressive. If you get in your regular sleeping position, it makes it very hard to shift around, which was my big problem with our old down topper. I know this is a mattress thread, but if anyone is tired of their old mattress, the pad is worth a try.

DH and I bought a Sealy Posturepedic Spring Free (http://www.sealy.com/SpringFree/springfree.aspx) king size mattress a few weeks ago. We absolutely love it! It doesn't transfer motion since it's spring free, but it's not the memory foam stuff. We like soft mattresses, neither of us like a firm mattress. I recommend you test it out in a show room :D

We have a sealy mattress that has an integrated memory foam on the top. There are also models by serta with the same format. I liked it better than tempurpedic which was hot and like laying on a brick. This was the only mattress that did not hurt my back. The only down side is that it was crazy expensive.

I guess it's different for everybody - we love our Sleep Number bed!!!! We noticed that a lot of people who ordered the bed and put it together themselves really hated it...but the ones who had the professional Select Comfort folks put it together liked it better. We had a bit of annoyance with it when we recently moved, but were able to fix it fairly quickly and we're comfy again.

We have the Tempurpedic Celebrity and LOVE it. I would wake up sore every morning on our old matress and with this one we feel great when we get up. I also have a the Temp. pillow and my Chiropractor appts have gone to zero. Love that I can get out of bed or toss around and nott wake my husband up. As to the warmness, I don't think we noticed it until someone mentioned it :-) . It might be a tad warmer but honestly, it is not noticable and A/C is on same setting and still sleeping with same amount of sheets/covers.

we also have a tempurpedic and LOVE it. we bought the "solutions" mattress from the healthy back store about 3 months ago (i don't see it listed on the main tempurpedic website)....and it's amazing.
i'm the hot sleeper between the two of us, and i don't find it very different than our old mattress - except so much more comfortable. we had an old pillow top and after about 6 yrs it was slumping so bad towards the middle (DH and i are snugglers :)) that i was waking up with such a sore back. i love that i can't feel him get up or move around.
oh, and we also have the pillows - which we adore. when i travel i miss it so much!

our new mattress *just* got delivered about 15 minutes ago!

we had a 2.5 year old Sealy that was TERRIBLE. so we are trying something different...

we bought a king sized 2" pocket coil mattress from an in-state (Massachusetts) mattress company called Gardner Mattress - after spending 3 hours trying mattresses at our local furniture mega store and not being able to make a decision - this was the 3rd mattress i tried at Gardner's relatively small showroom... it just felt really good to me.....

so... fingers crossed this is a better experience than our last!

Bumping for more suggestions!

I need to buy a mattress online or over the phone, as we are currently in the middle of nowhere TN with my in-laws and the bed needs to be in CT in the next 10 days. Gotta love moving.

The mattress is for my almost 3 yo, so we don't want to spend alot, but we do need a full size mattress, as her room doubles for our guest room.

I tried a few local furniture stores and they only carry local brands that we can't find in the Northeast.

Thanks, Sem426!

I'd like to use Sleepys - we've had good experiences in the past (and I can't believe you got a bed in one day!) It's infuriating because there is a Sleepys 2 minutes from our new house, but alas, I am in TN where there are two tiny furniture stores that have no major brands. I am reluctant to buy a bed with trying it out - I was hoping to find a bed I liked here and then order it online - but no luck.

Bumping with a question.. for those of you that posted in 2005 and loved your mattress, do you still love it? Is it holding up well? We bought a new Nebraska Bedding Co. bed in 2004 which we loved for the first couple years, but now despite flipping it often, it has sooo much sag it's ridiculous. We contacted the manufacturer and even though it's super saggy, it doesn't measure enough to warrant getting a new one from them. :( DH isn't sleeping well and my shoulders hurt from side sleeping, so it's time to get a new one. But I want something that will last!

Also, when we've talked to dealers in the past, they all recommend NOT buying a pillow top because they tend to sag faster than a traditional flat mattress. Anyone have an opinion on that?

Bumping this up b/c we've been doing way too much mattress shopping. I think we've decided to go with a Simmons Beautyrest Worldclass, but every shop seems to vary so widely with the best deal and discounts.

*bumping this thread up*

DH and I are desperately in need of a new mattress. After reading through this thread, it sounds like a Tempurpedic mattress would be perfect for us since we like a firm mattress and hate feeling when the other person get ups in the middle of the night.

For those of you who bought the Tempurpedic, did you get a great deal in-person versus buying online? Out of sheer convenience (I have two little ones and zero time to shop around), I'd LOVE to just buy it online but not at the expense of saving a lot of money.

I'm thinking about trying it out in person and then buying it from here:

http://www.tempurpedic.com/online_offers/

The king size mattress comes to about $3K. Has anyone been able to get this mattress in a store for much cheaper? Did you haggle with the salesperson??

TIA! :)

I bought a Tempurpedic 3 years ago and bought it in store. I think maybe we got 100 or so knocked off the price plus a few T pillows as well. It has been the best thing we have bought for our house furniture wise, hands down. In fact, I attribute the fact I slept very well during my entire pregnancy to the mattress. It really just hugs you and is so, so comfy. I will say I remember the first week or two I thought we made a mistake. It feels REALLY different than regular mattresses so if you buy it, stick with it before you decide either way.

We bought a Tempurpedic this summer. DH has been wanting one for a while. He is the manager at a furniture store though, so we got it for an AMAZING deal.

From everything he's told me - it's pretty hard to haggle for lower mattress prices. You can definitely look into buying the floor models though (at his store they are replaced yearly) at a significantly reduced price. That said - most stores/chains do online orders and orders over the phone - so if you don't want to go to the store you can always do it that way. Mattresses are kind of a big deal (at least at DH's store) and the sales associates will typically go out of their way to do what they can for you - whether it be free shipping or free pillows (or both).

As for my experience with the mattress -- Like expresso, at first I thought we had made a big mistake. The bed was really stiff and uncomfortable. It took a few weeks (I think less time for DH because he's heavier) for my body to adjust (and for the weird smell to go away) and I know LOVE IT. I used to wake up aching and tired because my old bed just lacked any kind of support. My sleep has improved SO MUCH.

Does anyone have any insight or experience with off-brand memory foam mattresses? We are in desparate need of a new mattress but can't afford a Tempurpedic after getting nailed on out taxes, yet again. Uncle Sam is taking all our mattress money! Ebay has a lot of off brand memory foam mattresses for excellent prices. I have a friend that bought one about 5 years ago and she says it's great but it didn't keep it's full shape and sagged. I'm not sure what to make of that because she's over 400lbs so I'm not sure we'd have the same experience.
I've tried to look at reviews but often ebay won't list the actual brand name, which is how they can keep the price down.
Any other insights?

We bought a memory foam mattress from Costco.com last summer - Sleepscience Ara. It was about half the price of the tempurpedic we were looking at. Awesome! Thanks for the help. I'll have to check out Sams and Costco. I hadn't even remembered they have mattresses. I have heard a lot of people say that they thought they had made a mistake when they first switched to memory foam but after they got used to it they love it. The ones I'm looking at have "cool technology" so I'm hoping that will help with the heat issue. In VA, I definitely don't want a "hot" mattress all summer long.

We have a king size Tempurpedic at home, and love it, but it wasn't what I'd call affordable! We really splurged with that purchase and have no regrets after three years. We just bought an RV last fall and the so-called "residential quality" pillow top mattress it came with was horrendous - so soft and saggy that DH and I literally rolled into each other in the middle and couldn't roll back! I wanted a memory foam mattress similar to our home one, but cheaper as we don't sleep on it nightly, and also needed a short queen which is RV-specific. I got a Select Luxury brand from Overstock for $320 and it's excellent. It's super firm like the Tempurpedic but obviously far better priced! It shipped in a very tight roll and was easy to get into the RV and then unwrap - it took about five days for the smell to dissipate and less than 24 hours for it to fully recover its shape. I just checked on Overstock and they have standard size mattresses in that brand that are equally well-priced.

We bought the Lucid brand from Amazon.com but just received them (for our bed and DS's bed) yesterday. We haven't slept on them yet, but no smell and they seem comfy. I'll let you know what I think.

Any current posters have a Sleep Number bed, by any chance? We just purchased ours today (delivery is set for approximately 2 weeks), and we got an amazing deal (including extras).

My main question was sheet sets. The ones we purchased were 1/2 off today, but that was a hard price to swallow for sheets! I was hoping to find deep-pockets sets that can be purchased in a regular store for *anything* less than the ones we bought today ;)

We were given a sleep number bed. I'm not a fan, though. We have a pad on top and still use regular sheets so I don't know if you have a different model that requires special sizes.

We are going to have 2 different pads on top, but our model is going to require the deep-pocket sheets. I found out some a little bit of research that you can use regular deep-pocket sets and use the elastic extenders to make sure they fit.
