Yes, I already know I'm a goof for even thinking this. :o

I have never been to Cancun and we are thinking of taking a quick trip down there in a couple of weeks. My main concern is not contracting Montezuma's Revenge during the trip. How were the hotels for things like drinking water and cocktails? We plan to stay at a nice place, but it definitely won't be an all-inclusive. I could only imagine that since they have huge tourist traffic, they have to be pretty good about making sure things are ok to consume. Did anyone have problems or were things pretty much ok?

The main things to be careful with is tap water and salads/produce.
Tap water is NOT safe for us to drink. so brush your teeth AND rinse/spit w/bottled water.
and w/salads & veggies & fruit that you don't peel to eat, you never really know if they've been washed with tap water. so it's best to avoid them

i stayed in Cabo San Lucas for 10 days, followed this little bit of advice, and had no problem! i enjoyed frozen drinks, cerveza, and street-food w/no problems.
you can get a good amount of info online as well. but this is the simple version. Enjoy!!

Both my DH and I were a little more "regular" than usual in Cancun but I think that was because of the amount of alcohol we were enjoying.

Like junebug said, make sure you use bottled water for everything. You should be fine!

Remember that the ice is made from tap water, so be careful of that.

This tip might help avoid Montezuma's Revenge:

- Buy a big bottle of Pepto Bismol.
- The day before your trip and each day of your trip, take a cupful (the cup that comes on the bottle) in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening.

I did this for a trip to Cabo and while it doesn't completely eliminate MR, it will reduce the number of times you need to rush to the bathroom. For the time(s) you do need to go, you won't need to sprint to the bathroom...you have extra time. And once you're there, the Pepto helps..um, "keep it together" :o...so it's not uncomfortable.

i got MR toward the end of our cancun vaca... it SUCKED! i believe we narrowed it down to the ice in the blended margarita i had at dinner one night since DH and i pretty much ate the same thing all day except for that.

stick to the bottled water at all times and you should be fine :)

We were so cautious when we visited Cancun. But after a few days, we stupidly let down our guard at a nice restaurant and shared a cactus salad. Oh dear heavens, I can never look at cactus again!

The point being, even the "nicer" places require a bit of diligence, but overall you should be fine.

I went to Cancun with some friends at an all inclusive a few years back (no idea what the name was, but it was on the "hotel row") and none of us had any problems. We drank and ate nearly everything at the hotel. We also hit a few local bars. No problems.

The past two times we've been in Cancun, I have consumed the water, ice, salads, and produce at our resort (JW Marriott and the Ritz Carlton). Never had a problem. In my experience, the water is safe at most of the nicer resorts.

I was there 2 summers ago and ate/drank everything with no problems at all. I guess it can depend on your own tolerance too. Bring some Pepto Bismal tablets just in case.

We went to Cancun last summer and stayed at an all inclusive that had it's own filtered water system, so thankfully, no problems. I avoided any food or non-bottled water at the airport though, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks everyone. I always travel with my very good friend Pepto - one never knows when it might come in handy! My husband has been before (went with one of his friends) and said he didn't remember any issues with the water. But, knowing my husband and his friend, I'm guessing their hydration didn't include water!
