ETA: Sorry I cussed in the title. I feel like that's a rule. Honestly, I'm so upset right now. I can't stand this. Talk about feeling like poo about yourself!

Please help me, this is no joke. I feel like the nutty professor. I went to bed and my chin itched and was a little swollen. I wake up and I look like this...

My first thought would be an allergic reaction - did you eat (or come into contact with) something new yesterday?

I remember something similar happening to my dad once (his upper lip, though), and it just went away within a couple of days. But I think if it were me, I'd give my doctor a call to see if he could make it go away.

Hope you figure it out soon!

This happens to my grandma and my aunt if they eat anything with MSG or red dye 40.

I agree w/ mmeblue. Looks like an allergic reaction.

Thanks mmeblue!

I didn't eat or come into contact with anything new. Well I used new fabric softener, but my first load with the new stuff is still in the dryer. I did eat a oatmeal cookie that I've never had before. I had it around 6pm or so.

I agree it looks like an allergic rxn. Your doctor should be able to prescribe an antihistamine to help with the itch/ swelling. On the bright side, I am pretty sure Jessica Simpson payed big bucks to get her lips to look like yours. ;) I hope you feel better soon.

Yeah, it looks like an allergic reaction to something. I would definitely be heading to the dr - maybe you can get a nice shot of cortizone.

The same thing happened to my dog. One morning, I was petting her, and her face felt funny. Over the course of a few hours, all of her face parts swelled up about 7x their normal size. The vet gave her a shot of some antihistamine, and we kept giving her benadryl. She got back to normal by the end of the day, but she was all wrinkly. The wrinkles weren't permanent, and were gone within the next 2 days.

If you have benedryl, I would give it a go. Like the PP, my dog had the same thing happen (we think it was a bug/bee sting.) The vet gave her a shot of steroids and had us give her benedryl.

I'm going to take 50mg of benadryl and go to sleep. Hopefully I'll wake up looking normal.

You ladies are so nice! When I saw it in the mirror I said, Oh good God!! I look like a freak!!

i would see an allergist for a scratch test to see if you can determine the reason for that reaction. that looks pretty severe to me and you don't want to have something worse next time you unknowingly expose yourself to the same allergen (if it IS an allergic reaction, but i don't know what else would cause that.) anaphylactic (sp?) reactions can be very bad and you don't want to have one (such reactions can lead to all-over inflammation, including the lungs, and can obstruct your breathing.) don't want to exaggerate or anything, but generally i've found, as an allergy sufferer all my life, that reactions can get worse over time, not necessarily better. i second the Benadryl as something you should take - they gave me a shot of that during my C-section when i reacted to the anaesthetic.

good luck,

Heather

I third (or fourth? Or fifth?) the allergic reaction call. I have a friend who was always a seafood fan. Didn't eat it everyday or anything - but always loved doing the "crabfest" thing in the summer. One day he eats crabs and out of nowhere - allergic reaction! Just interesting b/c I had not known that allergies could just develop so late in life! Like others said they can get worse over time, which his actualy did. He needs to carry one of those epipen (I think that is what it is called?) things at all times now in case he accidentally comes in contact with shellfish. Crazy.

This has happened to me a couple times, except mine was my upper lip. It was an allergic reaction, although we don't know what caused it, and it hasn't happened in 6 years. I went to the doctor and got a steroid shot and a prescription for prednisone. The funniest part was that when I went to the doctor I got in the exam room and the nurse said "so, what is the problem?". I just pointed at my gigantic lip. I thought it was pretty obvious.

I didn't see the picture, but even if you didn't eat anything different or used any different products, it is very possible to develop an allergy to something you were never allergic to before. And, the more you expose yourself to the allergen, the more the antibodies build up in your system and the bigger the reaction you get next time. So you could have been building antibodies to whatever for a while but never had enough to cause a full blown reaction, then this time, you consumed/used the "straw that broke the camel's back" and boom!

Benadryl should help but you should keep a mindful eye out for any swelling in your mouth, tongue and throat, which could quickly compromise your airway.

Hope you're better!

Thanks sky! My lip is back to normal. It only lasted that day. It had gone back down by 5:30 or so. The benadryl seemed to help.
