Ryan and I are huge music fans, and vowed to dance the entire wedding. We wanted everyone up there with us, of course, and decided to start with swing songs and gradually progress through the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. We also had an absolute ban on the typical (often cheesy) wedding songs- like the Electic Slide, etc. The plan worked - the older guests especially loved the swing and 50s/60s songs, and by the time the music had transitioned to the 80s/90s, many of the people who were most likely to complain about the music had already left. :) Plus, the dance floor was packed the entire night. (The pictures on my photographer's website [www.jvock.com/050204 ] really show this well.)
We actually picked out every single song that was played, because we are super-anal. You're probably not as crazy as us, but here it is, so hopefully you can get some ideas. :) Good luck!
Swing:
In the Mood
Sing Sing Sing
Jump Jive and Wail –Brian Setzer
50s/60s:
I Saw Her Standing There
Do You Love Me
You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling
You Belong to Me
In the Still of the Night
Can’t Help Falling in Love with You
70s:
I Want You Back
Staying Alive
December ‘63
Dancing Queen
Copacabana
Only the Good Die Young
80s/90s:
Let the Music Play-Shannon
Into the Groove
The Reflex
Relax
Walking on Sunshine
Dancing with Myself
Tarzan Boy
Never Gonna Give You Up
Living on a Prayer
Talk Dirty to Me
Pour Some Sugar on Me -- (this trio of hair metal songs was the biggest hit)
Always on My Mind – Pet Shop Boys
A Little Respect
Bizarre Love Triangle
True Faith
Bust a Move
Strike It Up
Good Vibrations
Gonna Make You Sweat
Rhythm Is A Dancer
Total Eclipse of the Heart—Nikki French
Tearing Up My Heart
Another Night – Real McCoy
Songs for Dinner:

You know it seems totally over done, but we had a band that really got everyone dancing. They started it off with ABBA Dancing Queen (after finishing the Hora lol). No one left the dance floor (ok not no one, but it was packed!)

"Jump Around" by House of Pain--this song never fails to get the party started!
And I second "Dancing Queen"--all women between the ages of 25-40 will immediately hit the floor! This is a proven fact-- ;)

The "Grease" remix. Every female will hit the dance floor and sing along!

At some point in the night, I want "We are Family" to play. My friend's reception band played it to celebrate the uniting of the 2 families and it worked really well to get everyone out there! It was a blast.

Yup - Dancing Queen will work.
Electric Slide will also get people dancing.
Hey Ya! - Outkast
Shout
Pump up the Jam
It Takes Two - Rob Bass
Push It - Salt-n-Pepa
Celebration - Kool + the Gang
Da 'Butt - E.U.
oooh, fun!

Kris97 I love your idea of going through the decades with music. My FI and I both love to swing dance so we were already planning on having the swing music but I really like the idea of progressing through the ages. And thank you so much for not playing the 'typical wedding songs'. Hehe! Like yourself, we've already nixed those songs from the list!

Funny, our DJ gave us a list of "ending" songs to use but nothing for start-up ones. Here is the list they gave me for "party" songs, maybe it will help. I think you can't go wrong with most (well known) Disco and Funk music in this department too.
Cha Cha Slide
Conga
Electric Slide
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Greased Lightning
Hands Up
Hot Hot Hot
Locomotion
Macarena
Mony Mony
Old Time Rock & Roll
Shout
Soul Man
Strokin
Summer Nights
The Time Warp

We started ours with a "dance through the decades" for our "ice-breaker", then the real dancing started with "Everybody Have Fun (Tonight") by Wang Chung. WE're an '80s couple!
We also forbade any of the typical wedding songs...ESPECIALLY the Chicken Dance.... HATE it, know some people LOVE it...every song played at our wedding said something special to husband and me.... :D

BUMP
any more ideas?
I told my DJ that if he played I will Survive that he was not getting paid! We banned all the typical wedding songs too and had a packed floor all night. my suggestions:
Shake your groove thing
Haven't stopped dancing Yet
Do you wanna get funky with me
Return of the Mack
Strike it Up
Runaround Sue (greater starter song, because it starts slow and escalates)
Little less conversation
Instant Replay (love, love love to dance to this! )
