View Full Version : Blood coming from the penis?

(We have an appt at 3:15 today with our vet - I just wanted to see if anyone's been through this before)

Yesterday we noticed that our french mastiff had a very swollen penis and that blood was dripping from it  DH tried to look at it and Dozer snapped at him (he's never, ever snapped at anyone before so it must hurt pretty bad). He's eating/drinking/peeing and playing normally and we've been keeping an eye on him when he urinates and there's no blood (that we can see) in his urine.

DH thinks something might've gotten stuck up in it (maybe a foxtail?) or he scratched it on something. He's not neutered (he's got his ch. title in conformation showing and will be bred) so maybe he got an erection and somehow hurt it?

Anyone experience anything like this? I tried looking it up online but all I could really find was issues with his prostate and bladder stones  I do expect that the vet will have to sedate him to look at it, he's a big boy and like I said, he snapped at my DH when he tried looking at it :(

I haven't heard of blood, but I have heard of dogs getting their winkies stuck outside the covering. If that happens, I've heard of two dogs getting so upset that they actually chewed them off! So, watch him closely until you go to the vet.

 That's horrible! Thankfully his isn't stuck outside but yea, he's inside with me so I can keep a close eye on him...

I was also thinking of some kind of infection. Hope your boy is okay!

Thanks for asking ladies :)

Well the vet sedated him, went in and looked around and it seems like an absess formed on the skin covering and then erupted and that's what was bleeding. The vet said he couldn't find anything inside of it but that doesn't mean something couldn't have fallen out when it erupted. Or he could've scraped it/injured it and it got infected. He cleaned it out and stuck a drain tube in it that we have to flush out 3x/day and then tomorrow afternoon we'll take him back in to get it removed. $475 for that, oh well, I'm glad it wasn't anything serious.

Dozer seems to be back to normal, there's blood dripping out of the tube but other than that, he's back to his happy-go-lucky self. Eating/drinking/peeing normally too.

Ow. Poor guy. I'm glad he's taking it in stride.

Sounds like an infection. Poor thing!

I found some dried blood on our puppy's wee wee a few months back - I totally freaked out, but found nothing the next day. I think he rubbed/irritated it against something. Sounds gross, I know.

Hope things turn out OK!
