I'm so upset right now.

This morning when I got up I discovered that our cat had thrown up blood twice overnight.

We took her in to the vet this morning (we didn't have an appointment, but we were able to see the vet after a long wait) and she said that it could be a number of things, from as simple as an upset stomach (we recently switched her food and her stomach could be upset from that), to a tumor, to kidney problems, etc. Or she could have swallowed something. I was using some pins yesterday and now I'm so worried that maybe she found one on the floor and swallowed it. I feel like I'm the worst cat mom ever.

The vet gave her a shot to try to reduce the vomiting, injected liquids to rehydrate her, and took blood for bloodwork to see if that will tell us what could be wrong. She had us take her home and wanted us to have her fast for 18 hours and then try giving her boiled chicken to eat.

In the past two hours she has spit up (nothing in her stomach to really throw up) blood three more times!! :( She is acting perfectly happy and normal, but it can't be fun to keep throwing up blood.

I called the vet just now and they offered us the option of waiting for an appointment tomorrow or bringing her in to stay the night there on IV fluids and to have x-rays to see if she swallowed something foreign or if she has a tumor. I'm waiting for DH to get home so we can decide together.

Please think good thoughts for her. She is our baby and I hate that this is happening to her.

I'm sorry you're going through this.

I think I would opt for an X-ray to at least rule out foreign body issues and then go from there.

Good luck!

I'm so sorry...please update us. Having a sick pet is just no fun and all you do is worry. Hopefully it is nothing too serious.

Keeping you in my thoughts.

And though you weren't exactly asking for advice, I would vote for taking the kitty in now. If she's not eating or drinking anything and still vomiting blood, she probably feels pretty yucky.

She seems to be doing better today. Thank you for all of the good thoughts.

Just like it's a bad idea to try to self-diagnose on the internet, it's a bad idea to google "cat vomiting blood" and read about all of the things that could be wrong. That's part of how I got myself so upset yesterday.

DH convinced me that she would be happier staying at home with us (she really hates to be in strange places) and after another call to the vet, we decided to keep her home, continue to watch her, and try feeding her a little bit of bland food (boiled chicken and rice) after her fast period was up. She managed to keep it down, and DH got up in the middle of the night to feed her a bit more (which she threw up a bit of by morning). But no evidence of blood since yesterday afternoon.

I am waiting to get a call from the vet with the blood results. I'll let her know how Honey is doing and we can figure out what to do next. I'm just glad that we were able to keep our sweet girl here with us and she seems to be happy, comfortable, and interested in eating.

I will continue to update as we find out what's wrong with her.

Hope your kitty is feeling better - very good sign that there's no more blood coming up.

Google is just not your friend when you have a sick pet, it just makes you think the worst! I've done the same thing though, trying to diagnose stuff.
