View Full Version : Bad Luck to Walk Down Aisle for Rehearsal?

My mom is freaking out because I am insisting on walking down the aisle for our rehearsal. She says it's bad luck to walk down the aisle before the actual day. I had NEVER heard this before my bro/SIL got married last summer and she didn't walk, but had a stand in.
So, for your rehearsal did you/will you walk down the aisle? I'm afraid if I don't 'practice,' I'll have no idea what's going on!

Well, we were married outside, but we did walk down our "aisle". However, my coordinator did not let us recite our ceromony vows, etc, because she said it was bad luck to do so.

I never heard of this superstition! I walked down the aisle a couple times at our rehearsal.

I walked down the aisle and cried!! Guess I had to get it out so I didn't do it during the wedding!! Coming up on Anniversary #3 soon, so couldn't be TOO much bad luck.

I've never heard of this, either.
I walked down the aisle, and so did the brides at every rehearsal I've ever been to. Some did it many, many times!

Our priest made us rehearse absolutely everything, including our vows. That was a little weird, but the aisle walk was fine. It actually helped my nerves a lot to have done it once before.

Thanks everyone! I've been to several wedding rehearsals where the bride did practice. So last summer when my SIL didn't walk down the aisle, I was confused. I had never heard of this either! Maybe it's a southern, older generation thing!
I've told my mom that I am going to practice. I agree with what PG-rated and camberne said...if I don't practice, I'll be a nervous wreck the first time I walk down! My mom thinks I'm nuts!

My family is from the Caribbean - most rehearsals I've attended the bride doesn't walk down the aisle.
I've also not had brides & grooms rehearse the entire ceremony with vows. As one officiant explained once you've said them you are technically married. IF you've met with the officiant before hand to go over the ceremony you should already know whats going to be said so its only the others (readers, singers) that need to run through it one time to get a mic check.

Whether rehearsing your vows makes you "married" depends on the ceremony, actually. In a Catholic ceremony like ours was, there's more to it than the vows, so rehearsing them didn't mean that we were technically married. But I suppose that if you're worried about that, you can ask your officiant. Like I said, it was a little weird, but it didn't take anything away from the real ceremony - it felt totally different.

I walked down twice. That's an interesting superstition, I've never heard of that before. If you don't walk down, how will you know how to pace yourself to the music, figure out the best way to hold your bouquet and the arm of the person who might be walking you down, etc.?

I've heard of it and I didn't walk down the aisle, my cousin stood in for me. I hung around, listened to the coordinator and walked around making sure everything looked perfect.

I walked down the aisle at our rehearsal. My dad wanted to practice his "footwork" and made me wrap a blanket around my waist. :) Silly dad!
Our priest did say he would not start the ceremony at 2 pm (our scheduled start time) He said it was bad luck and waited two minutes before allowing the whole ceremony to start. Me - I like punctuality but whatever.

I walked down the aisle so that I could practice. I figured the point of having a rehearsal was that everyone could practice and know where to stand. I'm glad I did. I remember telling my dad that I wanted to walk slowly!

That's funny, I never heard of it being bad luck but I just chose not to do it. I wanted the first time I walked down the aisle to be the actual thing.
