View Full Version : Parents perspective: What should I do with this milk?

So -- I have an unopened half gallon of organic whole milk in our fridge. I just noticed that it has an expiration date of July 1 (yesterday). Should I use it or throw it away? (its only use is DD's consumption).
My gut instinct is to throw it out... but I have guilt over that!
ETA: it would prbably take DD about 3 days to get through the whole half gallon...

There a thread perfect for this question over in cooking:

Pasteurized milk usually remains fresh for five days after its sell-by date

Use it. If it's not gone by Friday, pitch it.

thanks! i guess though since i am giving it to my DD... i feel like I'd like to know what other parents would do... the standards I have for me are different than what i would give to my toddler....

I usually will use milk if it just expired, will use it for a few days after if I need to and then if there is still more leftover after say about 3 days I toss the rest. Milk is so expensive nowadays.

I voted toss it but then I reread that it was unopened. I would use it for 3 days past the due date and then toss it. Practically speaking, I would probably make something like pudding in order to use it all up as well.

kinder - I do that too, to use it up faster. Make mac and cheese with it too

If it smells fine, I'd use it.

I'd do the same as others...use it up quickly. Maybe some pudding, or homemade ice cream!
Rice pudding is sounding good to me right now...mmn...

Smell it and use it if it's not turning funky.

Smell it and use it if it's not turning funky.
That's my rule of thumb for milk.

Good before, not bad after..... ;)
I have opened UNEXPRIED milk and it smelled funky so I tossed it, but have used 'expired' items for up to a week after. Dairy doesn't 'magically' go bad because the date on the carton.

i tried to use it... but wimped out and threw it away... *everything* smells funny to me when its past expiration.... the power of suggestion is too much for me i think. Thanks for all the input!

If a parents' perspective is really what's wanted, then why would this be the appropriate forum?
Why put a thread in a general forum and then basically say, nonparents, I'm not interested in your opinion?

Because, other people can answer the question, but she's particularly interested in the thoughts of other parents.
But, it doesn't belong in parenting. Much the same as say, someone asking about say, camcorders. Sure, that person might want (and appreciate) thoughts of other parents, but that doesn't change the fact that it's the wrong forum.
Should anyone have questions about that, please feel free to PM a mod or Administrator.
