I am trying to pack a bag for the hospital, I am wondering what I should bring for the baby to wear the days we will be there. I know that they will keep them in the little t-shirt, and a diaper, but i am thinking that I might want to bring gowns or onsies. Any advice? What did you do?

Thanks everyone...:D

My son wore a hospital onesie and was swaddled in a blanket most of the time.

DD wore a hospital-provided diaper, hat and T-shirt and was swaddled in a blanket the whole time. We changed her into a onesie and footed fleece pjs to leave (it was about 0 degrees out at the time).

You really won't need to bring extra clothes, nor will you want the hassle of trying to keep track of them if your baby goes to the nursery, etc. If it's warm (likely won't be) the t-shirt and diaper will be fine; most of the time he will be swaddled pretty tightly and will be plenty comfy in the shirt/dipe/hat they provide.

Seriously, the last thing you need is more stuff to keep track of, I just about lost it when I couldn't fit all our stuff back in the bags we brought them in. :)

DS just wore the hospital t-shirt and hat and was swaddled in the hospital blanket. The only clothes I brought for him was the ones we took him home in.

We didn't bother putting "our" clothes on DS while in the hospital - he wore the hospital-provided onsies, shirts, diapers and a hat. We only changed him into his coming home outfit right before we left the hospital.

the hospital stuff is fine. if you want bring something, bring it. both my kids wore petit bateau long sleeved side snap shirts w/ matching pb hats and blankets. those tiny clothes are so precious and i didn't see any point in not using them right away -- esp w/ all those visitors and photos and stuff :)

DD wore the hospital provided clothes/blanket. She actually got a really cute hat, made by the volunteers.

I took 2 outfits with us for her to wear home, because I didn't know if she'd need an up to 7 lbs or a 0-3 months.
It was too many clothes, but I over pack always, so why not do it that time also?

We used the hospital stuff till it was time to put her in her "going home" outfit.

We brought a few little outfits for when we had visitors. We had so many clothes that I figured that we may as well use them. If you bring any outfits, just make sure you bring your smallest ones. We brought the ones that said up to 7 lbs on them and they were still a bit big.

Wow, I didn't even THINK about bringing her clothes. :o I brought her a going-home outfit (ya' know for the 2 minute car ride! ;)) but that was it. Glad she didn't have to go nekkid.

Ditto that!

Our hospital didn't allow us to put "regular" clothes on our DC until the day we left the hospital. The reason was because they were very strict on security and wanted easy access to the babies ankle identification tag at all times. The baby also had to wear something on their ankle that would sound an alarm if they were taken too close to the elevator. I was also told that it just made things easier for examining the babies in the nursery. We didn't mind, less stuff to pack and we still have tons of great hospital pictures. :)

Just use the hospital stuff. If Easton wasn't staying for 10 days I would have just had his coming home outfit

We left Easton in them for about 2 days, but I had 2 preemie outfits so the nurse said bring those in, since it was chilly in NICU. He would usually be in the hospital side snap (very big on a 5lb 6oz preemie) and I would then change him into his footed sleeper or gown. The next day I would bring the other outfit and take the other home to wash. The stuck them in his drawer. If you do decide to take anything, put your last name n the tag, just in case it gets lost

We used the hospital stuff but we brought a pair of jammies for him to wear when they took his picture. The hospital provided a side-snap onesie (with no croth snaps) so he wore that and was swaddled while we were there. It made diaper changes very convenient since we didn't have to do the crotch snaps or try to get his legs in his jammies.

NICU had a whole closet of preemie baby clothes, separated by gender. We used their t-shirts, sleepers and hats until he got ready to go home. Good thing since we had no preemie sized clothes at home! We went shopping the day before he came home.

roberta - yeah our NICU had a whole slew of clothes (others left behind), sometimes we went in and he was dressed in one of the outfits, but they usually were still a bit too big for Easton. One day they couldn't figure out why it was so cold in the NICU near his area so he was moved over a few spots and had 2 hats, 1 shirt on the right way and another shirt flipped upside down to cover his legs up and then he had 4 blankets and his crocheted blanket on him. He was toasty to say the least. Was a good thing I had brought in one of his outfits that day so I could take him out and not let him get cold. Since I had the 2 outfits already at home, figured he might as well get some use out of them, he was out of them by the time he was getting ready to come home.

My son wore a hospital onesie and was swaddled in a blanket most of the time.

This is what we did too. They also had a shirt upside down on his legs used as pants too!

I did not even entertain the thought of bringing clothes for either DC to wear. Frankly I did not think that was an option. They did offer to have our DD wear her going home outfit for her pics if we desired. No pics at DS's hospital.

My girls wore their going home outfit for their hospital pics, but otherwise they had to wear the hospital provided clothes during our stay.

Hospital provided shirt, diaper, hat, and swaddle blanket here too. :)

The dye (antiseptic?) that they use on the umbilical cord stains (it's blue/purple) and I didn't want her to get her clothes messed up. Plus, the nurses check the baby every hour or so the first 24 hours and it would have been a pain to have to undress her every time. The big ankle security monitor also would have gotten in the way of any cute outfits. We actually had to wait until the last minute to put her in her going-home outfit because the security band was in the way.

Both my kids wore what ever the hospital put them in..undershit, hat and blanket. The only thing I brough was the going home outfit.
i really would not bring any extra outfits with you and just let your baby stay in the stuff the hospital provides you with.

DS wore the undershirt, blanket, and hat provided in the hospital. The only article of clothing/hat we brought for him to wear was his going home outfit. I totally would not have wanted to change DS in the hospital. The nurses constantly came in and checked his temperature and diapers so the shirts were perfect. Believe me, between BFing, post birth body, and how tired I was I didn't really care what he was wearing, he was perfect just as they wrapped him. ;) Plus, we brought too much crap with us to begin with, that would have just been one more thing to lug back and forth.

We weren't planning to go to the hospital, so we didn't bring anything with us.
But DS didn't wear anything but a diaper anyway. They put a little shirt on him but I took that off because I felt it was important to maintain skin-to-skin contact during that time. When I had to use the bathroom he either was skin-to-skin with someone else or got swaddled.

I took Carters newborn size outfits, but DD swam in them. She was 6 lbs 7 oz. So my mom went and bought a couple preemie outfits, but mostly she just wore the hospital outift with the swaddle blanket I brought.

Bring a swaddle blanket! It is sooooo helpful.

He just wore his diaper, hospital Tshirt, hat and swaddled in the blanket the whole time. He wore a NB sleeper in his pictures and a 0-3 month onesie (which was huge on him) home.

She just wore the hospital shirt and diaper.

I had this really cute 0-3 month outfit to go home - 1) It was huge on her even though she was 9 lb 3 oz when born and 2) She didn't even get to wear it. It was unseasonably cold on August 12th so DH just grabbed some hand-me-down pants and long sleeve onsie from the nursery. Not a very attractive outfit!

DS wore the hospital stuff -- which consisted of a diaper, a gown, a knit hat, and swaddling blankets. I changed him into his going home outfit about an hour before we left.

We didn't have an option at the hospital we delivered DD at, it was policy that all babies wear hospital issued shirts. I think partly it was for security reasons and party it was for ease of access for the doctors etc. Her 0-3 going home outfit absolutely swam on her but she was a tiny 6lbs 9oz baby so everything swam on her for the first month or so!

Our hospital had little gowns for the babies (pink for girls, blue for boys). We put her in her own hat:

Both DD's wore a diaper and were swaddled (I don't remember either of them wearing a shirt, but I could be wrong. They were only in the hospital 24 hours and never left my room. I wouldn't worry about packing anything for your stay, because it will just be more laundry to deal with later.

Hospital shirt, diaper, and hat. DD was also swaddled in a hospital blanket pretty much the whole time we were there.

Hospital provided hat, t-shirt, diaper, gown, & swaddled in blanket. We seem to be in the minority that our hospital provided gowns for the babies.

We used the shirt/hat/blankets provided by the hospital, other than putting on the coming-home outfit for pics. Much simpler, and no laundry for me to do. Surprising, since dressing my DC is one of my hobbies. :D
