That is horrific - my GF from college did that with her brother. :( I know it haunts her to this day, and it has really changed her life.

A good friend's daughter was hit in a parking lot by a mutual teen-aged friend. He normally would speed out of the parking space (you know how some people show off that way?) but this time he didn't. He heard a thump and was able to stop immediately. She was basically uninjured but was definitely scared. Everybody at that church service learned an important lesson that day. It has been consistently in the back of my mind since then.
Several months ago I read an article about this issue in Reader's Digest, I think it was. I had a serious talk with my children and our nieces and nephews. Since then the kids are very aware of what's going on when they're outside. I think that it's a serious talk that some of us can tend to forget to have with kids.

My aunt's best friend's husband ran over one of their kids in the 80's. Such a tragic death. :(

The rear cameras are incredible. I do hope they become standard equipment.

I'm always afraid I'm going to run over one of the neighbor kids when I'm backing out of my driveway. I go so slowly and look for them, but am still paranoid. I agree, it'd be awesome if the rear cameras were std.

There was a similar tragic death in our area a few years ago, and now all my neighbors back into their driveways to park. We learned of this from a neighbor when we moved into our neighborhood and realized we were the only ones who didn't.
I guess the reasoning behind this is you are much more likely to be in a rush when you are leaving, not coming home, so you have more time to back in and you are really careful doing so. Certainly you could still run over something in front of your car if it was close enough to the car that you didn't see it, but it does decrease the likelyhood, IMO.
I am all for making those rear cameras standard in cars!

The mother of a classmate of mine in the 5th grade ran over my classmate's little sister that year. I'll never forget it. So horrible.
