View Full Version : Peanut-free lunch for summer camp?

My son is starting summer camp next week, and, unlike his school, he has to bring lunch and 2 snacks every day.

He's a picky eater, so I envisioned a week full of PB&J for lunch.

Well, today I got a letter from camp that says that due to lots of kids having allergies, no peanut butter or any peanut products are allowed.

He doesn't like lunch meats, his little lunch-box won't really stay that cold (so no mayo or other spoilable food), and there are no facilities where to heat up food. All I can come up with is mayo-free pasta salad.

What other things can I make for his lunch?

How about another nut butter - almond or cashew?

Empanadas? :D

Maybe a cheese and tomato sauce sandwich, pita bread with veggies and sauce, rice and tuna or chicken, or something similar? I think these items should be fine even without refrigerating until lunch, although you could get one of those small ice packs if you're really concerned.

How about those little tuna and cracker packages? Soup/SpaghettiOs in a thermos? Leftover pizza? String cheese? Chopped up hot dogs?

What about trying another kind of "butter"? Apple butter? Almond Butter? SoyNut Butter? Sunbutter? (You would just have to make sure that the product was not processed along with peanuts.)

Mini-bagels with cream cheese, cheese cubes with crackers, cheese sandwiches, pita with hummus, yogurt with fruit.

My kids also like chicken nuggets and fish sticks. I heat them in the morning and then put them in a tupperware bowl, and they eat them at room temp. They might be weird, though.

I also put the ice pack in the lunch box to keep the food cool.

Thanks, everyone! I read all of your suggestions to my picky eater, and we'll definitely be doing soup in a thermos as well as something along the lines of cheese and crackers/bagels. He also agreed to have "warm" pasta salad in a thermos, with chicken, broccoli, and carrots. Oy, he's hard to please!

Thanks again!

When we go out hiking and bring a lunch, I'll pack a cheese-on-whole-wheat sandwich for DS in a little lunch bag with an ice pack. Often he'll take the thing apart and eat the sandwich separately from the bread, but at least he eats it. :)

Would pumpkin butter be ok? Maybe a pumpkin butter and cream cheese sandwich? (Maybe that's too weird for a picky eater.)
