I have a question for you. Can you please tell me which sentence would be correct?

"Company" is pleased to congratulate "Recipient" on receiving the 2007 "Award" presented by the "Institute Name".

"Company" is pleased to congratulate "Recipient" on receiving the "Institute Name's" 2007 "Award".

The possessive 's confuses me all the time.

Thank you!!

Either is fine. But Guru's isn't possessive. :p

Oh - that was a test Greenbunny - to see if you REALLY were a Guru! YOU PASS! :D

ROFL!!! I can't even pretend - I am just a goof! (I DO know better than that - just a brain fade I guess.) :o Sorry about that. (Now I'm worrying if Guru should be capitalized???) Oh.. its going to be one of THOSE Fridays..... :p

Just curious though - which would you use?

If this were being spoken, I would use the second one because I think it flows better vocally. If it were being written, I would use the first because I think it sounds more formal, unless space is an issue (like if you're working in column format).

I'll just second greenbunny. ;)

Thanks ladies. This was actually in a newspaper announcement, and Marketing had the second one and it just looked odd to me. I suggested the minor change to the sentence - but they stuck with theirs. I thought they should know what they are doing, but I wanted to ask the experts (and have piece of mind that I am not completely wrong either!) :p

Thanks again.

I'm sending out an invite for a party, and I need a little help.

Should the wording be...

"Let's raise our glass and give a toast"

or

"Let's raise our glasses and give a toast"

I thought it should be "glasses", but when the proof came back, they changed it to "glass". I've asked a couple people around my office, and no one seems to know which is correct.

Thank you!!

Glasses

I agree with you. Glasses should be plural, unless you're collectively raising one huge goblet! Maybe the printers got confused by the singular toast? Gotta hate when other people insert errors into your stuff for you!

Can I fix the title? Pleeeease??? :D :D :D

eta: aaaah, I feel much better.

Step one in grammar rehab: Admit you have a problem. Whether I'm referring to the OP or myself is still in question.

Step one in grammar rehab: Admit you have a problem.

Step two: turn your life over to the Chicago manual of style?

I would change it to: "Let's raise a glass and give a toast!"

Since the common phrase is 'raise a glass.'
