On Monday May 25, the Memorial Day holiday, a neighbor of 17-year-old James Allen Wamsley asked the teen if he could watch her children, a 3-year-old and a nine-month-old baby boy. Wamsley was more than happy to oblige; however, at some point, the teenager chose to cross several lines, both moral and legal.
At about 11:20 p.m., when the neighbor returned from a family picnic, she discovered her infant was severely injured and placed an emergency call to 911. Paramedics transported the child to Kadlec Medical Center where he was treated for sexual assault.
Richland Police Captain Mike Cobb was at the hospital when the infant was brought in. He later described what he saw to KNDU-TV.
"The child had been brought in, injuries to the child demonstrated that some sort of sexual assault had occurred," Capt. Cobb said. "This is probably one of the most disturbing type of events that ever occurs to a police officer or a family member. So it's nothing we ever want to hear, nothing we ever want to investigate, but unfortunately, all too often we have to."
Get the rest of the story; here (http://www.crimelibrary.com/news/original/0607/0501_james_wamsley2.html).
This is just too horrible for words.

This:
If convicted, Wamsley will receive a sentence ranging from 93 to 123 months.
Is f'ing insane. He should get 93-123 YEARS, not months.

lock him up and throw away the key. i haven't seen much compelling evidence that child molesters can reliably be rehabilitated or won't molest again once released, so i don't understand once convicted why they are every allowed back into society.

i was thinking the same thing.

I have no problem with this, I just didn't know how else to title it.
Maybe something like "17 year old arrested for assaulting 9 month old?"

I don't know. How about just "Sick".
Ever since becoming a mother I have a physical reaction when I hear or read about things like this. I just have to turn away and block it out.

I agree - the title alone is making me sick. I can't read the article - disgusting is too weak a word. :(

Me too. But, its weird. I practice criminal defense law. But when I'm not wearing my "lawyer" hat, I can barely stomach this kind of news.

I just stopped in to ask that the title of this be changed, so thanks LMC for requesting it. It's so disgusting that just coming into the news forum and seeing it made me sick. Maybe just take everything off after "rape."

How awful! I agree with the "lock him up and throw away the key"! (I feel that way about all molesters and rapists.)
I pray that poor little baby NEVER had an inkling of a memory of this
unfortunately, she will probably sustain injuries that will last the rest of her life. its so tragic.

I believe the infant was a baby boy.

What a sick individual. He should be in jail longer.
I thought that the unbelievably lenient sentence might have to do with the fact that the perpetrator is a minor, but then I read this:
Wamsley was initially booked at the Franklin Juvenile Justice Center; however, on Thursday, he appeared in the Benton County Superior Court, and the decision was made to try him as an adult.
I just don't understand how the longest he'd serve is just over 10 years. Don't people get more time than that for raping an adult?!? It's just mind boggling.

Well it depends upon teh court and teh jurisdiction, but the minimum sentence for rape is aftemn as low as 7 yaers - put in about 3 with good behavior.
We just have to hope teh baby is so small that it wil heal completely and have no memory of the events.

A NINE MONTH OLD baby?
Yeah, like everyone else has said, I feel like I want to vomit. That and run into my daughter's room and make sure she's okay.
I am the most civil libertarian person ever, but stuff like this just makes me think, "Give that guy ten minutes locked in a room with about a dozen or so moms. That's all I want." If he walked out under his own power, I'd be stunned.

Exactly!!!
We just had a guy here(my husband grew up with the guy, it's quite scary, but anyway) that molested 3 children(2 six year olds and a 5 year old) and taking pictures of it.
Here is his sentence:
serve 25-80 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections for first-degree criminal sexual conduct for molesting a then-6-year-old girl.
ordered to serve 10-15 years and 13-20 years for molesting two other girls, then ages 5 and 6, in separate incidents.
also recommended that Wilson not be granted early parole.
The judge flat out told him: "I think you should not walk the streets again."
Now THAT is a proper sentence!

F'ing disgusting! This is one of the reasons I have never let anyone but close family and friends that I absolutely trust watch my children.
