A proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage was defeated today by a joint session of the Legislature by a vote of 151 to 45, eliminating any chance of getting it on the ballot in November 2008. The measure needed at least 50 votes to advance.

That's great news for you!!!:) :D :D

I do have one question though, what would they do in regards to those already married if they did vote and decide to ban same sex marriage?? Would they grandfather them in someway? How horrible would that be if they didn't?

Thanks!

We would be grandfathered in, yes, but basically it would be null and void because in the end. They just *had* to include in what they tried to pass that they would grandfather us in.

That's just wonderful! When your rights are denied, all our rights are in jeopardy. And your daughter has as much right as any other child to the rights and benefits of growing up in a family. Hooray!

Congratulations to Massachusetts!

Would you mind having your legislators call my legislators? It's been (un)constitutionally banned in my state...:(

wouldn't go so far as to say that MA is progressive when allowing wine to be sold in grocery stores was shot down.

And seriously, they were only 6 votes away from losing the amendment... lotts work still to be done!

What you say is true :), but for those not familiar with the wackiness that is the MA constitutional ammendment process, they needed 25% of legislators to vote for putting the ammendment on the ballot. The were 5 or 6 shy from getting the 25%--it wasn't that they were close on a simple majority.

I'm not touching the wine in grocery stores thing :). Thank goodness my Trader Joe's is allowed to carry it!

I'm so proud of our state! And yay for all (adult, consensual) couples, of all genders, races, religions, and ethinicities, who want to get married and shout their love and commitment from the rooftops!

Thanks everyone :D

Pretty exciting stuff. And really the only thing keeping us in the state....but it's an important thing, especially since we have DD.

It was great to see that folks changed their votes when they realized that it would just be hurting our families, and what the hell is the point?

Now, let's get the rest of the country on board!!

I miss living in Massachusetts. Didn't think I would, but after having lived in a socially progressive state and then moving to one that, umm, isn't, the difference is overwhelming.

It hurts my heart to think that people who love and care for each other aren't allowed to marry in all states.

Yay, Massachusetts!! I hope other states view this as a precedent to follow.
