BATON ROUGE, La. - Inside the industrial looking brick walls of one of Louisiana's poorest performing middle schools, Scientologists finally have achieved a longtime goal.
A study skills curriculum written by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard is being taught as mainstream public education.

I have a friend who is a scientologist. Whatever we may think about their beliefs, they DO have a fabulous curriculum for study and learning. If looked at just from that perspective and not from a religious one, i think they can do alot of good in the inner city schools across the nation.

Just because grades are up doesn't mean kids are learning. No Child Left Behind already proved that. I'm highly skeptical of an education plan written by someone with no background in the psychology of learning, IEPs, multiple intelligences, gifted and special education, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera...

No no no no a thousand times no! Religious groups should not be participating in curriculum for public schools. NO!

I use the term 'religion' loosely here, since it is 'religion' via science fiction writer - but I agree with others, no no no.

NO NO NO!
Scientology is a manipulative, fake "religion." It has NO place in our public schools.

Well, even a non-"fake" religion has not place in our public schools (except, maybe in a comparative religion course), IMO.

MLA - agreed!
Scientology has a special level of ire from me. I may not agree with other religious beliefs, but I can still find something redeeming about almost all faiths. Not so with Scientology. They are just particularly manipulative and always seek out ways to make money. Money seems to be their primary goal. Which has me even more skeptical about what they are doing with the public schools.

Religion has no place in the public schools (except, perhaps, in history/social studies classes, strictly in the "comparative religions" sense, not the preaching sense). Freaky cults like Scientology have even less place in schools. (And no, I do not in the slightest apologize for calling Scientology a freaky cult. That's what it is. And L. Ron laughed all the way to the bank with it until the day he died.)
