Anyone else addicted?

These are my most favorite books in the world! They are easy, entertaining, "get lost in their world" books. I can't get enough. These books got me through a really tough time with DH and step-kids before the wedding. It was a great escape for me. I must have ready dozens of books at that time.

Some of my favorites:
Anything by Red Dress Ink (http://store.eharlequin.com/t10_view_series.jhtml?CATID=80042&PRIM_MONTH=0)! I got interested in these just before I was engaged. I used to buy each any every one that came out, but then the wedding took top priority. Now I'm trying to get back into them.

Jane Green
Sophi Kinsella - LOVE Shopaholic!
Marian Keyes

I wish my library had a section dedicated to just Chick Lit. I think I'd probably be there non-stop. So, for now I just wander looking for the little red dress on the book binding. :D

I'm a total chic lit addict, too. :D I love this genre, and I try to alternate one serious / classic read with one fun / chic lit read. :)

You might be interested in checking out this other thread about beach reads / chic lit:

The Song Reader, the book I'm reading now, was in an article about ChickLit in the Redwood Review.

I don't know why the term annoys me so except that "they" always seem to be defining "wimmens" writing. Romance. Chick Lit. I guess it's just the ongoing human quest to assign labels to everything.

ohhh, I've been such a slacker lately that ALL I read (when I read) tends to be chicklit. I can't wait for the new Jennifer Weiner (she's saying it's a mystery!) I'll read anything by Sophia Kinsella and Marian Keyes.

Of course, right now I'm reading Wicked, but I can't really seem to get into it. I'm halfway though, but it's just kind of lagging (when will they become the wicked witches and the good witch already?!?!)

I love Chick Lit! I started reading it a few years ago, with the first Bridget Jones but then took a break and only read classics for a few years. Now, since I'm getting ready to go back to school as an English major, I'm squeezing in all the Sophie Kinsella's I can, lol. I just finished reading Can You Keep A Secret? and want to start the first Shopaholic book. I bought it years ago, just have to find it.

Katy, I had the same trouble with Wicked! I got up to the part where she's done with school, but then it started to drag and I lost the book. Now I found the book and have no interest in finishing the story. I guess I will, eventually. Hope it picks up for you.

I'm planning on reading Wicked this fall. I saw the Broadway show in May, and it was unbelieveably wonderful. Probably my favorite Broadway show up to this point. If you have the chance, you should see it, even if you think the book drags.

I am a Chicklit (Chicktion: Chick Fiction) freak! I love Sophie Kinsella, Jane Green, Jennifer Wiener, and so on. I read a lot and most of it is useless Chicktion. Ahhhh! :D Love it!

I'm another chick lit fan :) The library I used to go to had a 'promo' of sorts for C.L. books - and they had a 4 page list of authors, but I lost it. I usually do the same thing JLP does - I look at the publisher and know if it's Red Dress Ink, I'll read it. It's funny, it's very easy to find CL books by their cover/title.\

Right now, I'm reading 'Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood' - I'm way behind the times on that, but I recently read 'Little Altars Everywhere' and enjoyed it.

Now I'm reading this:

I wasn't sure if I'd be able to sympathize with the main character at all, but I definitely do. I can't wait to finish this so that I can read the other side of the story:

I've read Something Borrowed-it was cute. I've read all the Shopaholic books and Can You Keep a Secret. I recently read Diary of a Working Girl by Danielle Brodsky. which was really good and am currently reading The Nanny by Melissa Nathan. I love Chick Lit books.

For those who loved Bridget Jones (I.LOVE.HER). I've read "The Boy Next Door" by Meggin Cabot about 5 times so far. As soon as I get extra $$$, I'm going to get more in this "series". It's written via email and messages, so it's similiar to the format of the Bridget Jones books. It's hilarious!

Kim, I love Meg Cabot's books. I think I have read all of them (not counting her young adult, Princess Diary ones). I enjoyed them SO much, I passed them on to all my friends (and they end up abroad - now Spain - with my friend that teaches overseas). I think I liked "The Boy Next Door" the best, but I loved the one in Italy as well (that book is tons of text messaging via blackberries - quite fun!)

I just picked up the latest Sophia Kinsella while I was in Costco. I can't decide if I want to dive right in, or if I want to wait until I actually finish Wicket (about 150 pages yet, but to be honest, not all that exciting or engaging).

Chick lit is such fun!

I read all sorts:
Kinsella, of course (just finished Shopaholic and Sister and requested The Undomestic Goddess from the library)
Marian keyes, Jane Green, etc.

Also:
The Botox Diaries
The Nanny Chronicles
The Right Address
Bergdorff Blondes

and so many more!

I don't buy them (I feel they're quite disposable), but I get them from my library. I usually search Amazon or the book section of Glamour, Cosmo, etc., then do a search on my library's website and request it.

In my nightstand, ready to be read, are: Trading Up (by SATC's Candace Bushnell) and Something Borrowed.

This is a great idea and something that I will be doing now (once I update my library card that I seem to have lost). I never thought of requesting books before, but now I see we have a good computer-based system so I'll start doing that)

It's really great if you have a smaller library because they don't always have the books you want so they can take them from all the libraries in the county.

I've recently gotten hooked on Chick Lit and I'm wondering if others have too.

Any great authors to read? Great books to read?

I usually like to find an author that I love and then read all of her books. Because chick lit is relatively "new" in the publishing world, I don't always find that an author has more than one written.

Any one else?

I also like Marian Keyes, Sophia Kinsella, Lauren Baratz-Logsted (anything from the Red Dress Inc. publishers), Jane Green, and have throughly enjoyed Liza Palmer's first book (she's working on her second).

When I need more ideas, I go to Amazon, find books that I liked and read the "others who have bought this also bought" list as well as poking around their "lists". I've found quite a few authors that I really like that way.

Otherwise, you might want to do a quick search here (http://www.constantchatter.com/search.php?searchid=630649) for ChickLit and see what comes up (I believe we have quite a few threads already) as well as check out smoething like chicklitbooks.com (http://www.chicklitbooks.com/) for ideas and suggestions.

My favorite chick lit authors are british, and you can't always get their books from amazon.com, so i used to order a lot from amazon.co.uk. shipping kills me, though!

but you can still get a lot of them here. off the top of my head, i'd say marian keyes, jane green, katie fforde, fiona walker, christina jones, jill mansell. but i also love jennifer weiner.

This isn't new, but I picked up one of the Chick Lit short story collections recently and it's really good. This is a great way to find new authors you like. For instance, several of you mentioned Marian Keyes, but I'd never read her. She has an engaging lttle story in this collection, so now I want to check out her books.

And has anyone read Carole Matthews? The story of hers was extremely good.

Anyway, this was the one I just read:

I also read the following one last year. Not as varied as Girls Night In, but also pretty fun.

I highly recommend Beth Kendrick - Fashionably Late and My Favorite Mistake were both awesome. Also, Whitney Gaskell's True Love (And Other Lies) was fabulous. Carole Matthews's For Better, For Worse is one of the funniest books I have ever read; it's brilliant.

I have *shelves* full of chick lit at home. I will go check out my bookcases later and look for other really exceptional ones to tell you about.

* Cecelia Ahern - P.S. I love you (if you don't mind having a cry) and If you could see me now (underlying story line is about imaginary friends, but actually quite good)
* Anything by Marian Keyes
* Monica McInerney - The Alphabet Sisters (also a cry worthy book) and she has a few others i just haven't read them yet
* Katie Fforde - Restoring Grace is the only one i've read but i liked it so i'll read some more of hers.
* Anything by Cathy Kelly
* Allison Rushby - in particular allmenarebastards.com v.v.funny
* Maggie Alderson - Pants on Fire and Mad about the Boy

* Jodi Picoult is really really good, not a fluffy read like some of the others I've mentioned, but a really good read - faves are My Sisters Keeper, Picture Perfect and The Tenth Circle

I am also a big Brittish Chick Lit fan. Jane Green, Helen Fielding, Sophia Kinsella (who also writes under another name) and there are a few others that I like from America. I tend to enjoy them because it is a quick and easy read and it doesn't take too much brain power. ;) I will typically pick an author and read all of her books. As of right now, Helen Fielding doesn't plan on writing another book about Bridget Jones but I am hoping that she at least writes another book, I love her style.

A book that I just finished is an actual memoir and it is GREAT! Tabloid Love by Bridget Harrison. She writes about her experiences as a reporter at the New York Post. It was touching and funny.

I guess this would be the appropriate place to post this. I read this article earlier today: http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/20060621/en_bo_usatoday/chicklitmatures;_ylt=AoeyTaDEZviYaX2QEUjweTxxFb8C; _ylu=X3oDMTA0cDJlYmhvBHNlYwM-

Now, I am all for the chick lit... I really enjoy it and find it quite an enjoyable read. My one question is that the article says "Chick lit titles have had to change along with the audience, says Zan Farr, a buyer for Borders bookstores. 'The titles have followed (readers), but I also think a lot of the earlier chick lit fans have moved into regular women's fiction.' "

What the heck is REGULAR WOMEN'S FICTION?

Thanks!

Ally Carter is another great author. She's new and only has two books out to my knowledge - "Cheating at Solitaire" and "I'd Tell You I Love You, but Then I'd Have to Kill You". The latter is written for teens, but the first one is a fantastic book. I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the sequel!

I absolutely LOVE Meg Cabot. I've read her entire Princes Diaries series :o, All American Girl series, and Size 12 is Not Fat (mystery)! Can't wait to start on "Every Boy's Got One" and "Boy Meets Girl". For a complete list of adult titles, check here (http://www.megcabot.com/forolderreaders/)!

I just read The Next Big Thing by Johanna Edwards and enjoyed it so much I went to Amazon and ordered another one by her, but I forgot the name.

I am about to start Queen of Babble and Size 12 is Not Fat by Meg Cabot (love her).

At our last bookclub meeting, Liza Palmer (http://www.carmenandjane.blogspot.com/) recommended we check out Megan Crane (http://www.megancrane.com/work2.htm). Everyone Else's Girl is this month's bookclub selection and I just now finished both of her books. I found them both to be quite enjoyable.

I also just found out that Anna Maxted has a new one coming out. She also recommended a few other lighter, chick lit reads for our book list, but I don't have the list in front of me. I'm sure we'll be asking Megan to recommend some other authors when we discuss her book.

ETA: Woohoo! I just got back from the library and it turns out there's a new Marian Keyes - Anybody Out There (http://www.mariankeyes.com/books/anybodyoutthere/content/synopsis.html). I'm about to dive into it now! :D

Here is a list of my favorites:

Little Earthquakes (Jennifer Weiner)
Good in bed (Jennifer Weiner)
In her shoes (Jennifer Weiner)
Conversations with the fat girl (Liza Palmer)
Larger than Life (Adele Parks)
Babyville (Jane Green)
Jemima J (Jane Green)
The Starter Marriage (Kate Harrison)
The man I should have married (Pamela Redmond Satran)
Bachelorette #1 (Jennifer OŽConnell)

These are Australian:

Mad about the boy (Maggie Alderson)
Pants on fire (Maggie Alderson)
Handbags and Gladrags (Maggie Alderson)
Bad boys Down Under (Nancy Warren)
Alison says (Suzanne Hawley)
Three wishes (Liane Moriarty)
Strapless (Leigh Riker)

Right now IŽm reading "Fourplay" by Jane Moore which is quite nice so far. Before that I had started to read the Shopaholic series but somehow I found that book so superficial that it didnŽt hold my interest. Maybe IŽll start it again in a couple of months to see if I like it better then.

bumping up...

I'm reading 20 Times a Lady by Karyn Bosnak. I've only read the first 40 pages, but it's hilarious so far. It's a light read.

From Booklist
Don't hate yourself in the morning for reading this book and liking it. It's as irresistible as a pint of Ben & Jerry's and goes down as easily. Free spirit Delilah hates herself after she wakes up with inappropriate man number 20 the day after she's been laid off from her job. Since this number is the limit Delilah has set for herself before getting married, she has the expected loopy single-gal freak-out and goes on an extended journey to track down every badly chosen man she's ever slept with and determine if she didn't make a mistake tossing one of them back into the dating pool. Astute readers will spot Mr. Right immediately--a Colin Farrell look-alike who tracks down Delilah's old boyfriends and is charmed by her quest. Fans of chick lit will recognize the overbearing mother, the quirky pet, the misguided ideas about love and relationships, and the laugh-out-loud encounters with old flames that end in hilarious flameouts. The lively pace and outlandish story will keep readers hooked, but don't skip the footnotes. Kaite Mediatore

I just recently read "Boy Meets Girl" by Meg Cabot, it's a similar format to "Boy Next Door" - lots of emails, memos and so on. It was hilarious. I'm getting addicted to "young adult" books about 15 years too late, but who's counting... it's never too late to have a happy childhood! Sarah Mlynowsky has some excellent ones in the "Bras & Broomsticks" series (if you can get the audio version from your library, do it - makes morning commutes SO much better.) Her chick lit books are also some of my favorites: "Me vs. Me", "Monkey Business", "Milkrun". An underrated author you may not have heard of is Lolly Winston, I recently read "Good Grief" by her and it reminded me a lot of Marian Keyes' style - sort of like laughing through tears, serious subject matter lightened with a killer sense of humor. I like Jane Green, Sophie Kinsella of course, LOVE the Bridget Jones books... There was a really good collection of short stories called "Girls' Night In" followed by "Girls' Night Out" by lots of different chick lit authors. It's a great way to discover your next favorite.

For some reason, I got Shopaholic and Baby from the library and honestly, thank goodness I didn't buy it. I loved the first 2, ok 3 books in the series but she never seems to grow up. Just thought of another great author, she's not strictly chick lit (for one thing she wrote her books in the 80's) but close.

Laurie Colwin: Happy All the Time, Family Happiness, Goodbye Without Leaving, and A Big Storm Knocked It Over. I read all of these and they are excellent.

I'm currently reading Around the World in 80 Dates by Jennifer Cox. While it's not actually chick lit since it's non-fiction, but it's a cute easy read. She was the head of PR and spokesperson for Lonely Planet travel guides, and quit her job to date 80 men in 18 countries in 6 months. Looks like they're turning it into a movie next year some time (imdb doesn't have any info).

Excerpts can be found here (http://www.randomhouse.co.uk/minisites/80dates/excerpts.htm).

I've been dying to read the Something Borrowed, Something Blue series, so I've got them on my library list. I've also decided to go back to Jane Green (I never got around to reading any of her stuff after Jemma J). And like Claire, I really do wish there were some more Marian Keyes books out there.

I just finished Shopaholic and Baby - I'm glad that I checked it out of the library, too! :D

I picked up some chick lit to help me move a little quicker on my 50 book challenge. Chick lit is just so much faster to read than some of the other stuff I've been reading lately.

Anyway, I just read Shopaholic and Baby. I actually liked it better than some of the others in the series. Yeah, she was the same old irresponsible Becky, but I didn't want to completely strangle her (like in the book where she got married- UGH). I enjoyed seeing more of her sensitive/compassionate side here. Even though I fear for her poor child. ;)

I also just picked up Frenemies by Megan Crane, since I enjoyed her last book. I'm only one chapter in and am really liking it.

Just a few months shy of her 30th birthday, Gus Curtis finally feels like she has it all: a strong career, great friends, and a wonderful boyfriend. But all of this comes crashing down when Gus discovers Nate, her "Mr. Right," hooking up behind her back with her so-called "friend" Helen. Soon it seems like the life Gus has worked to make so adult looks a lot like the one she already had as a teenager, and Gus is left with more questions than answers: Can she win Nate back before she turns 30 alone? (And if so, does she really want him?) Is Helen really as devious and manipulative as she seems, or, worse, is Gus more like her frenemy than she ever imagined? And is she ever going to grow up? With the clock ticking down to her birthday, Gus discovers that sometimes the best thing about best-laid plans is trashing them altogether. I really enjoyed Frenemies. And FWIW, I hope to be interviewing Megan Crane shortly (in between her book tour) for the CC blog. I'm really looking forward to it.

While visiting at Mobox's this week, I snagged Ralph's Party by Lisa Jewell. I meant to read it years ago and just never got around to it. I've also started Julie & Julia (a book club book - I'm reading a bit early), but it's not grabbing me as I'd hoped just yet. I'll pick it back up again once I get back from my weekend in Chicago - I want something totally fluff (Hello Nora Roberts!) for the flight.

I just read Vince and Joy by Lisa Jewell, which was excellent and am currently reading Marian Keyes's Anybody Out There? I recommend both.

Wanted to recommend one that I read recently: Seeing Me Naked by Liza Palmer. Really enjoyable-- fun characters and setting. She also wrote "Conversations With the Fat Girl" and that's a good read, too.

From Publishers Weekly:
Palmer follows up her mirthful debut, Conversations with the Fat Girl, with a subtly sophisticated romance that outclasses most of the genre's other offerings. Elisabeth Page is a 30-year-old pastry chef at L.A.'s restaurant du jour whose perpetually knotted stomach has roots in any number of sources: her father, Ben, a two-time Pulitzer-winning novelist and the kind of cultural icon that doesn't exist anymore, with whom every conversation is a chess game; childhood sweetheart Will Houghton, whose globe-trotting as a journalist has stunted their ill-defined relationship; the head chef from hell at her all-consuming job; and her patrician family's way of bonding through blood sport. But relief begins to filter in as Elisabeth's dalliance with beer-drinking, salt-of-the-earth basketball coach Daniel Sullivan turns into a fulfilling relationship and her culinary career takes an unexpected turn. If it sounds chick litty, it is, but consider it haute chick lit; Palmer's prose is sharp, her characters are solid and her narrative is laced with moments of graceful sentiment. I like Jennifer Weiner.
I read Good in Bed about a month ago and loved it. I've added the rest of her novels into my must read list!
