Well, what can you expect from the Bush admin. Guess this is no big surprise, right? He's a dumbass til the bitter end...

Hopefully his nomination will be blocked.

Holsinger, 68, has declined all interview requests.
Figures.

Hopefully his nomination will be blocked.
Ditto that.

I was scared to open this thread when I saw the title. I just knew that Bush had nominated a wack-job.

Anyone know what his stance on women's health is? Are we going to have to fight for BCP and abortion now, too?

Isn't the Surgeon General mainly a figurehead? Does he actually have policy-making powers?

Honestly, I don't think this nomination is going to pass - the Senate will just block it until after the election. I think Bush is trying to give Republicans some fodder in 2008 by nominating people that will be blocked so they can claim that the Democrats are "playing politics."

I wonder what Cheney thought about this nom.

What he said 15 years ago was wrong - dead wrong. But the more I look into what he has done in Kentucky and in his career I'm not disappointed with this nomination (although I disagree with his stance on homosexuality).

For me, I think the nomination was largely due to his longtime work with veterans and veterans health, and I like that about him. Especially when we are going to be left with the veterans from the Iraq war in the next decade.

He also has a physician wife and four daughters so I would hope they would encourage him to support health issues for women. And I will support almost anyone who will focus on childhood obesity. Yes, he's religious, but that in no way makes him a wack-job. I also don't think his views on gays and lesbians have anything to do with his ability to be surgeon general. It's documented that his support of stem cell research recently has made the Bush right nervous.

Here's a brief article about the medical center he headed up for years:
