Alive, In A Closet

WEST HARTFORD -- Investigators were prepared for the worst Wednesday morning when they served two search warrants at 258 Newington Road.

They were at the home to collect DNA from Adam Gault, 41, and to look for evidence that might link him to the disappearance and possible demise of 15-year-old Danielle Cramer, a Bloomfield girl missing since last June 16.

"We had concerns that she was the victim of a homicide," said Bloomfield police Capt. Jeffrey Blatter.

Once inside the home, police from Bloomfield and West Hartford began looking around. An investigator pushed aside a large dresser, revealing a locked and hidden half-door for a small closet under a staircase.

Wedged inside the closet was Danielle, pale and timid, but very much alive.

"Experience told us that this was an unlikely outcome," Blatter said.

Police in Bloomfield believe that a professional relationship between Gault, an animal trainer, and Danielle's family sparked a relationship between the two that led her to run away from home and disappear for almost a year.

"This was a child from troubled circumstances who found what she believed to be a friend," Blatter said. "You have a 14-year-old girl under the influence of a 40-year-old man. I'm not sure if her belief of the situation is accurate."

On this morning's local news, it was being reported that the girl was defending her captors. Stockholm syndrome, maybe. It's just sad. :(

Oh it is so sad.

Blatter said she has not been returned to the custody of her parents.

Is there a reason for this, other than they were still examining her?

Wow, I'm glad she was found.

From what I understand, the girl's captors claimed they were 'sheltering' her from abusive parents. Yeah, in a freaking CLOSET. If they truly had concerns, why not call CPS or the proper authorities - instead of HIDING the poor girl in a closet?

It sounds now as if the parents have been cleared of any allegations of abuse. The abductors are facing heavy charges and likely jail time - not surprising.
