View Full Version : Once again, I am torn. Is it fun or fugly?

I posted this pic in the low/no flower thread, but I am torn. I like these centerpieces (ok, I love them!). Bert's not quite so enthralled. Are they fun, or fugly? The wedding is in Vegas, in September. The theme is vintage glam with lots of shimmer and sparkle. The colors are red, black, ivory and light gold/champagne. So, please, help me out here. Fun or Fugly?

They are fungly. There is something oddly appealing about them in a fun way. But really they are quite fugly when you think about it. I think it fits the vintage glam of vaegas however.

They are a little over-the-top for my taste.

I think they're awful too, but that could be part of the appeal. Since it's vintage glam and sort of boa like, it could go with the theme. But if I walked into a place and didn't know there was a theme like that I'd think, "UGH. What were they thinking?"

Thanks, guys! Sometimes, I really can't tell the difference! I still love them, but I don't want my guests thinking "Why are there feather palm trees on the tables? What was she thinking!?". I'd love to get more feedback on them. I'll need this thread when I start to rationalize why I should get them. :p

Yeah, I'd have to go with fugly.

Very Las Vegas - and since that's where your wedding is......it could work!
They would be horrible in southern Ohio, where we live!

I like them, especially since you are getting married in LV. If you really carried that theme throughout the whole wedding, I think it'd work.

That's what I meant when I said they're fun :) Definitely Vegas

Well, thanks guys. If we used these centerpieces, we'd have feathers in the bouquets as well. Everything for the wedding, including the invitations, are very sparkly. My make up and hare will have an element of glimmer/sparkle. I'm just worried that these centerpieces are too much over the top.

I think they've got potential to go either way! In the picture, I think they're fun and that room looks like a perfect setting for a vintage glam Vegas wedding. But there's already a lot of other glitter and sparkle to that set-up so the feathers work. So it really depends onwhat else you do. If you just have plain white tablecloths and a more standard ballroom setup, I think it could quickly veer into fugly.

I think it depends on how vintage glam you go. If you go all the way over the top Vegas vintage glam, it'll work. I think you can still do that tasteful without going fugly.

I think we're having black table cloths, and red napkins. We're not wearing period dresses or anything, but I am trying to carry out a vintage glam feeling.

Those may well be the coolest things I have ever seen. Especially for a Vegas glam wedding. :) Love em. But make sure you get the lighted "trunks" - that sort of adds to the ambiance. Whatever those blue things are are cool too.

If we get them, they come with lights for inside the vases. Thanks!
Eh, I'm undecided. My first thought was that they were cheesy. I think if you were doing vintage glam and just keeping the colors light colors like white, ivory, gold, silver, the centerpieces might work. But I think if you throw in black and red, they'll look like an '80s prom decoration.

I have to agree with this. If it's just white/silver or ivory/gold, it could possibly work, although I'd personally consider it over the top, even given the theme and location, and I stand by my original vote of "fugly." Adding red and black makes me think goth fugly, not vintage glam fugly.
ETA: I would normally never use the word fugly to describe an element of someone's wedding. I'm just using the OP's wording.
There was someone on WC that had feathers in her centerpiece. We used the same photographer- I wish I could remember who it was. She used feathers throughout her wedding, and it was very elegant and well done (I believe the wedding was at the San Francisco Presidio). Our photographers daughter still had the centerpiece in her bedroom for some time after the wedding.
The photo you posted above makes me say "eh". But, like I told you, the photos I saw of a fellow WC bride were awesome. So, I would think that is can be pulled off, just a little differently.

My vote is for fugly; however, one per table could totally work! Just something about them all in a row that is a bit much (even for a Vegas gig)!

Only you can tell how they fit w/your theme.
If there were about 1/3 fewer of them, lose the blue lights (candles?) and if you dropped the red from your color scheme, maybe..... As in only black, ivory and champagne.
Time of year? Nature of guests (meaning are they apt to get a kick out of it or be shocked and dismayed... lol)?
Could you do something along the same lines only a bit more subtle? Probably not.
I guess I'd say "Fungly" and "there's no accounting for taste," but if I was a guest at your wedding, with one eyebrow raised, I'd be applauding you for having the gutsiness to go with that, and still have a wonderful time.
Please let us know what you do actually use?!

Maybe if they were not so full as shown in that pic, they would be ok.
Personally I think with the colors you are choosing, it won't look right, too much going on. If you go with the white and champagne and maybe the black, I can see it working. But not with having the red in there too. Definitely wouldn't put so many on 1 table, maybe even go with ones that are a little bit shorter.
Let us know what you decide in the end.

Thanks for the input, everyone! Red is staying. My FH's family is Chinese, and it is a traditional color for good luck and happiness.
If we use these centerpieces, they will be a bit shorter (20"), and there will only be one per table. They will be the only decoration on round tables. The main colors we are using are black and light gold/champagne. The ivory and red are accents. It is an evening reception in Vegas at the end of September. Hope that helps with further advice. I am still on the fence.
Thanks you, everyone, for your input. It is an ongoing joke in my family that before I buy anything, I should ask "is this ugly or tacky?".

If we use these centerpieces, they will be a bit shorter (20"), If that's 20" to the top, then your guests will see that and no one across from them at their table. The top 6-8" which is the fluffy part will be directly in peoples' line of vision. Try it - sit at a table and measure 20" and you will see that that will be all that is in your field of vision. The nice thing about taller centerpieces is that they allow guests at a table to be able to see each other and mingle at the table.

The vase is 20" tall, then the feathers sit on top. I will measure and see how that would work, though. Thanks!

I actually like them!! I think it's great with where you're getting married. People will notice the theme. They do seem very formal though. Make sure you let people know if it's a formal wedding. You don't want people feeling out of place when they see how "big" the wedding them is.

I can't stop thinking about these. I think they are interesting in a fun way and sound like they will go with your theme and the Vegas location. :)
I was curious, would it look all that bad if you added maybe one black feather to each one? Something to add a bit more "old hollywood." I was just trying to think of something to make them pop a bit against the red and black. Maybe I'm thinking of those feathers that are black with a little bit of brown running through them? If they are all the same I don't think it would look out of place to break up the white like that.
Oh - and I do not see the red and black as being too goth. I think a lot of people are using red and black in their weddings now in very tasteful ways.

I like the feather aspect, but the vase screams stripper stiletto. :D If the vase matched the vintage glam idea better (which in my head means roaring twenties/art deco) I think it would work better. I guess I'm kind of picturing an upscale speak easy vibe...

IMO, definitely fugly. I would "poll the audience" and make my decision that way. If half the people say "fugly" then I would expect half my guests to think so too.

I always go with "if I have to ask if it's ugly/tacky, then it probably is".
These particular centerpieces were a popular look for corporate events a few years ago, but personally, I wouldn't want to see them at a wedding - not even a Vegas wedding.
Natasha

Thanks again, everyone, for your input. I don't think a poll is necessary, it seems that pretty much everyone is against them. I'm glad I asked, because my taste can be really off! :p

I don't really think they are all that bad. Totally untraditional but I think they are really funky (in a good way ;) ). I can totally see them working with your location and theme, especially if you carry the feather thing into the bouquets and such.
I always loving seeing weddings that used different elements. I think to many weddings are cookie cutter copies of each other anyway. I say if you really like it, go for it! It could look awesome! :D

Simple rose centerpieces with hand made table numbers. Saved about $600 in doing so, too! :D

Your tables look great, and the feathers would have totally taken over the room and just been a huge distraction. BUT, I'm absolutely in love with those feather centerpieces for some reason. I love feathers. :o
