View Full Version : Cindy Sheehan resigns as 'face' of anti-war movement

This is my resignation letter as the "face" of the American anti-war movement. This is not my "Checkers" moment, because I will never give up trying to help people in the world who are harmed by the empire of the good old US of A, but I am finished working in, or outside of this system. This system forcefully resists being helped and eats up the people who try to help it. I am getting out before it totally consumes me or anymore people that I love and the rest of my resources.
Good-bye America ...you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can’t make you be that country unless you want it.
It’s up to you now.

Hm. I think the problem is this has always been more about her than about the U.S. to begin with. I feel for her and her loss, but I don't think she's been so altruistic or about the "greater good" as she'd like to believe.
Of course, I'm a demon Dem so I doubt she'd care what I had to say anyway. ;)

Grieving for her son and being against the war was understandable. Cozying up to a dictator like Hugo Chavez, though...not a good way to keep in good standing with anybody, democrat or republican. Actions like that undermined her credibility and the anti-war movement as a whole. I hope she finds peace away from the spotlight.

"Casey died for a country which cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months..."
Sad and disgusting, but true.

Sad and disgusting, but true.
I don't think that's true, honestly. I think people feel like they have more of an effect on AI than on the war though, so feel there's more reason to pay attention to it.

I have to agree with this. There were lots of things about her demeanor and actions that bothered me, and I'm a liberal Dem.

I suppose I am the only one on CC who actually LIKED her. I guess I must be one of the few Dems who agrees that she has a point that the Democratic Party has been a little disappointing lately.

I agree with LFPH. There really is nothing we can do about the war. It's obvious that our cries for peace and to bring our men and women home are unheard. So why not have a little bit of fun and anticipation. We're not going to stop what's happening. Even at this point, even if we pull out, the terrorism and violence is here to stay.
On the note of Cindy Sheehan herself...the woman was a camera and spotlight whore. Her son died for a country that he obviously loved enough to die FOR. He KNEW the possible consequences of joining the military, and he still chose to do so. I feel for her loss, but her rants and raves disgraced her son, as far as i'm concerned. He died honorably serving his country. Weather this war is right or wrong, he still made a commitment to fight for the freedoms we enjoy today (and keep our country safer). Everytime i saw her face, I wondered how disgusted her must be that instead of mourning him and being proud of his commitments, she is stealing the spotlight herself.

You know, I think that Cindy Sheehan has been painted in this light. Can you imagine the pain of loosing your child violently in war? I think it's horribly insensitive to say that she is using the death of her son for a selfish agenda.
She believes, as do many Americans now, that her son died for a lie. He did not die over anything to be proud of. She does not want anyone else to loose a son or daughter for this horrible lie. There is no honor in this war.

I agree with you!
As far as the comments saying things like, "We can't do anything to stop this war!", I think that's a cop out. Of course you can do something! You can protest, you can persistently and assertively contact the politicians that represent you and only vote for/support politicians who are against the war. You can write letters and commentaries to newspapers. I am EXTREMELY active in the peace movement and I think it is such a cop out to claim to be against the war but then refuse to speak up or do anything about it. The activists helped bring Viet Nam to an end. Rosa Parks created a whole boycott movement for Civil Rights that changed history.

Looks like Cindy Sheehan has moved onto impeachment instead. Sheehan arrested in Washington (http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/07/23/sheehan.impeachment.ap/index.html?iref=mpstoryview)
She's decided to run against Nancy Pelosi due to Pelosi's refusal to try to impeach Bush and Cheney. It all seems a little nutty, since 1) Bush and Cheney will be leaving office at the same time as Congress will be up for election, so it'll be a little late for Sheehan to go impeaching them herself and 2) the whole reason Pelosi says she doesn't want to attempt impeachment hearings is that she wants to focus on ending the war in Iraq. After all the time Sheehan spent trying to end the war, she wants Pelosi to NOT try to end the war, but focus on impeachment instead?

I really backed Cindy for a long time, but I think she's gone a bit off the rails at this point. I did like her a lot--and I still do admire her tremendously, and grieve for her loss--but I think she needs to pull back. Running against Nancy Pelosi and attacking her for not pursuing impeachment is extreme and unproductive. I wish she'd stop.

Cindy Sheehan went off the rails a long time ago (photo op w/Hugo Chavez, anyone?). I'm looking forward to her race against Pelosi. After Cindy gets her clock cleaned by Pelosi, hopefully she'll disappear. I doubt it, though.

Why is it that the only press we get on the anti-war movement is when we have someone "crazy"?
I still don't think she's as crazy as we're led to believe, but if she is, why is she the only face of the anti-war movement we see? Even with the fact that most of America is not on Bush's side any longer.

Couldn't agree with you more.
