So TAR 8 is probably still a few months off but that doesn't keep me from thinking about it. New cast, new destinations, new prizes, new controversy (i hope!), etc...
Anyone else getting antsy for a new season of TAR? I mean, watching the past seasons is great and all but i have already seen them all and other than watching TAR advance to the newer production style of itself its getting old and i just want new Phil! ha ha.
I did a search for the new season and am getting a little worried that the 'family' edition of TAR is going to suck! Don't get me wrong... i haven't missed a season yet and i don't plan on it but I am not so sure a 'family' version is going to be all that great. I could see teams of 4 being fun like 4 brothers and sisters (over 18), set of 2 couples, maybe some sorority sisters or fraternity brothers, etc... a little controversy ;) Does anyone know what the age limit was for TAR 8?
AND i have heard a nasty rumor (http://www.realitytvworld.com/index/articles/story.php?s=3609) that TAR 8 doesn't leave N. America. AHHHHH! It's 'a race around the world' that's what it's always been! (even if they didn't make a complete circle every season!)
I am probably worried over nothing but something tells me TAR 8 just isn't going to be as enthralling as 1-7. Anyone else worried or anyone that can give me a new perspective on what TAR 8 possibly holds in store for us?

I thought I heard that Rupert from Survivor was going to be on this season with his family. Maybe if they stay in the country I'll recognize some of the places (for once!)

Half the fun is seeing the places they go... I consider it a travel show on speed. My entire world travel list is made up of places the amazing racers have gone. :D
I thought i saw a Rupert rumor too. I have mixed feelings about reality tv star cross over.

Someone mentioned (can't remember where) that Rupert wasn't going to be on it b/c his son wasn't old enough. Rumor?? I don't know.
It will kind of suck if they don't leave N.American but maybe it will open our eyes to what kind of places are right here in our very own country.
Either way it will be interesting. And I can't wait! :)

SOHO, NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, USA
By Tribefan on Tarflies
Time: Morning, Thursday 7 July 2005
1. 3 families at Eastern Mountain Sports.
2. One of them black, other two white.
3. One with young child.
4. Each family in an SUV.
5. Car-plates from different states. One New Jersey, one Michigan.
Eastern Mountain Sports is located on 591 Broadway, at the intersection of Houston Street. The shop specializes in sport and outdoor apparel. TAR has had tasks making teams go to shops to pick up gear (TAR5 Calgary, edited out), so this may be a likely task. This information fits in with the Huntsville spoiler below, claiming that the race started on Thursday.
HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY, USA
By various posters over several forums, including DingoDan on Tarflies
Time: Thursday 7 July 2005
1. Washington Crossing Bridge closed.
2. Information from New Jersey radio station 101.5FM.
3. Explicit mention of The Amazing Race filming.
4. Filming expected to end before 6pm.
Fits in nicely with the first and next spoiler, but why would a radio station get wind of this, and announce it publicly?
DELAWARE RIVER, NEW JERSEY & PENNSYLVANIA, USA
Can't find primary source, reported by Ecdubfan on Survivor Sucks
Time: Thursday 7 July 2005
1. Caravan.
2. Mention of cluebox and tasks.
3. Unhelpful staff and cordoned off areas.
4. Alleged filming of tourism video.
5. Rowing of 'George Washington' across Delaware.
6. Six teams of four seen.
The visitor's center is on the intersection of Routes 32 and 532. I'll try to get a satellite image to try to match the places mentioned.
VIETNAM MEMORIAL, WASHINGTON DC, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, USA
By 1963Mustang on Survivor Sucks, reported here by Nomipomi
Time: About 11am, Friday 8 July 2005
1. Team with man, woman and two girls running from Vietnam Memorial to Korean Memorial.
2. Talked to a ranger, who was asked to sign confidentiality papers.
3. Ranger says their excuse was a 'tourism video'.
4. Cameramen and sound men seen.
The evidence seems to be strong, but a die-hard fan will know about the way TAR works with two crew members, confidentiality papers and the 'video' alibi. Fits in really nicely with the Dulles spoiler below.
RONALD REAGAN AIROPRT, ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA, USA
By Beau_20 on this page
Time: About 11 to 11.30am, Friday 8 July 2005
1. Team seen from metro line running out of car.
2. Cameraman spotted.
3. Car marked with yellow and black flag.
Thanks Beau_20! I'll go check up on whatever's nearby. Could it be Crystal City? (Is it even an attraction?)
DULLES, WASHINGTON DC, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, USA
By T2 on TWoP
Time: About 7.45pm, Saturday 9 July 2005
1. Phil checking into United flight.
2. Phil with three 'production-types'.
3. Group lining up for business-class seats.
Would make sense given the above Vietnam Memorial spoiler, and this throws Toronto into the out-of-sync category. Something suspicious is that Phil has mentioned several times that he travels by Economy class. Why the change now?
ALBERTA, CANADA
By Rothschild on this page
Time: In the near future
1. This will be the 51st state!
Little more information is given, so I cannot certify the authenticity of this spoiler. Did you get the information your uncle, who is a White House correspondant's cameraman? Random polls on people in Alberta seem to suggest that not much political activity is going on in plain sight, could that be CBS keeping everything under wraps? Or could this be a decoy? Could it be Nunavut instead?
SOUTH CAROLINA, USA
By The Huntsville Times
Time: Monday 11 July 2005

This is rather credible information, read on for more of my two cents.

Despite the lack of information, this spoiler goes well with the one above. Date fits nicely too.
SPACE CENTER, HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA, USA
By The Huntsville Times, reported here by Nomipomi; also by Ripley68 on TWoP; also by the New York Times
Time: Early Morning to Afternoon, Tuesday 12 July 2005
1. Teams arrived on two buses from South Carolina.
2. Teams headed to Huntsville-Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau, 500 Church St on Tuesday morning from midnight to 4am.
3. 8 to 10 GMC Yukons left the parking lot for the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
4. There were tasks involving the Aviation Challenge centrifuge, running to rocket park and the computer station at the Space Center.
5. The Space Center is possibly the Pitstop.
6. The Huntsville Marriot is the Pitstop hotel.
7. Clueboxes put on display only when necessary.
8. Only one team has been eliminated since the start.
9. There are still eleven teams this time.
After having so many spoilers with minimal information, we finally chance upon a generous one. Two separate spoilers basically saying the same thing, with the Pitstop description, the hotel, and the buses. Newspaper reports have rarely failed us. (I can't recall a time when they have.) I'll reckon this is the most reliable spoiler by far.

From the same article as the Huntsville spoiler, so their reliability is linked.

1. Producer comments 'they will be here in July'.
2. When asked about Survivor: Guatemala, producer says 'the other one'.
Filming production leaks seem to be the most reliable. That's where I got information for the Singapore leg of TAR3 as well. If it's a personal contact, all the more likely it will happen. However, we don't know if it's another production that will film in Central America in July.
BARRO COLORADO, PANAMA
By Antennapedia on TWoP
Time: Saturday 16 to Sunday 17 July 2005
1. Americans spotted in white vans.
2. One team speaks French.
3. Cameras abound.
4. Teams were looking for the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's boat dock.
As the racecourse veers south, one wonders why they cut through the entire Eastern coast and skips the entire western half of the United States. It's a second-hand source and descriptions are quite generic, there is a possibility that it's a hoax. Also, the witness sounds like an American ('doing field work'), so he should probably know about the race and how it works. Anyway, the Institute is on Barro Colorado Island, off Colon (where the Panama Canal ends) and not that really far way from Panama City.
TEAM SPOILERS
Nomipomi has raised the issue about Palpatine on Survivor Sucks claiming to be Willard of Survivor: Palau and having his son's family on TAR: Family. If we see a heavily-tattooed man, that's our guy, according to Palpatine.
1963Mustang suggests there is a team of a white man, woman and two girls in the race in Washington DC. They wore matching orange outfits on that day.

Canada holds a lot of local mini-races, so this may be part of one of them. Although the timing doesn't fit in, anything can happen. There are several attractions in the vicinity of Fan Tan Alley, and no Amazing Race watcher (enough to know about bickering couples and cameramen) will mistake the green box and flag design. This spoiler seems to have been refuted by Bassoon291 on Survivor Sucks, whose e-mail reply from Dundas Square suggested that the filming on July 16 (huh?) was for the Samsung Race for the Torch. Can anyone go down on the 16th to see if there's a separate race being run?

1. Filming was limited to the airport.
Very strange that filming only takes place in the airport. Is it a place for a charter flight, or anything else that can only take place in an airport? Biggest problem with this is that it takes place as teams are supposed to be in Alabama, based on the Huntsville spoiler, and teams took buses from S Carolina there, ruling out a connecting flight.

I wish i knew. When do the fall shows start? September or October? I would guess a few weeks to a month in advance because they will start running promos... TAR is one of CBS's top rated shows and they have always started advertising way in advance. Always seems like forever between the start of the previews and the start of the show!
CBS does have the fall preview time slot set which in the past has been up in the air until the last minute: (i'll include the picture of Phil too!)

http://www.cbs.com/primetime/fall_preview_2005/images/amazing_race8/main_pic.jpg
The show description irks me (if they DON'T end up leaving n. america then the show is clearly not a race around the world!) It doesn't really say anything we don't already know...
This fall, Phil Keoghan hosts as all new Teams will set out on THE AMAZING RACE around the world to compete for one million dollars. The Teams will never know where they're going next or what they'll have to do once there. Each Team's relationship will be forever changed by their experience in this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Along the way, the Teams will compete in a series of tasks, some mental and some physical, before learning their next destination. Restricted plane travel and strict budgets will add to the tension as Teams are forced to rely on wit and ingenuity, perhaps sleeping on park benches or in bus stations and traveling on buses, trains, boats, taxis, bicycles, even camels. Teams farthest behind will be eliminated as the race progresses, and the first Team to arrive at the final destination wins one million dollars.

I think it'll be cool to see places in North America that are familiar, but we'll definitely lose out on the diverse culture experience.
Don't they try to time TAR to start after the Big Bro finale? If so, I think it might be late Sept./early Oct. And do TAR and Survivor premiere in the same week? If so, Survivor was definitely already in full swing on 10/7 last year (I was in labor in the hospital and watching it). :)

P.S. I hope everyone understands sarcasm here.
Also found this on Rupert: (also, shows the min. age for kids on the show)
Distressing rumors that The Amazing Race 8 would feature Survivor pirate/teddy bear Rupert Boneham are apparently not true. Although he’s a fan of the series, he’s not going to pull a Rob and Amber and get a third chance at $1 million. Rupert tells Reality TV Magazine, “No, we won’t be doing the Family race. As much as I enjoy the show, I wouldn’t put my 5 year old daughter through that.” Not that she could participate: the age limit for kids is eight.
Maybe a Sept 20 countdown is in order?

I've been thinking about the idea of a N. America only race, and I just don't know. I think it will be interesting to see the landmarks and stuff, but I don't see it being as challenging as previous seasons. I think it will be alot easier without having a language barrier. Signs won't be hard to read, and directions will be easier to get. People won't have misunderstanings about where to go with cab drivers, etc. I guess they'll want to make it easier since children will be involved, but I'd rather not see them change part of the premise of the show (race around the world). Guess we'll see, though.

On a happy note, TAR is (or was until yesterday, I believe) taking applicants for the 9th season, specifically asking for teams of two so at least we will be back to the original format after this-coming season. I am not at all crazy about the family race and am very disappointed it is only going to be in North America. Where, exactly, is the challenge in that??

TAR was auditioning for their show right here in Dayton, Ohio here last Saturday(July 23) at Cox Arboretum Park. It was for couples. They were only taking the first 200 people and then going from there. subscribin' I've been getting my TAR fix by watching GSN nightly lately.
Not sure how I feel about the family aspect and touring only in NA. I've always enjoyed seeing how incredibly tired they get traveling around the world and seeing various places I would never see. NA only may be a little too boring. I'm also thinking it is going to be a little too chaotic at the beginning with 11 families of 4. I guess I'll have to wait and see!
sarahh
08-02-2005, 06:49 AM
I think one of the reasons why they are touring NA is because they are families of four. I am sure it would be a logistical nightmare to have 11 teams of four travelling internationally. Will children be taking part in this race?
heidi0622
08-02-2005, 06:51 AM
I think I remember hearing that the minimum age for children was 12. I guess that makes sense that it would be logistically difficult to travel all over the world in teams of 4. Still...I love the international aspect of the show!

08-02-2005, 07:21 AM
Teams of 4 of not it is a "race around the world"! ;)
I heard a few rumors about them being out of the country though. Who the heck knows what to believe since it is all speculation until they actually air the show. I wish we had a firm premier date. It is getting closer though since we are into august now. yay! :D
Found this regarding age. It was dated March 4, 2005:
The teams of four that will run The Amazing Race 8 can include kids as young as 8. That’s down from the previously announced age limit of 12. This change surprised host Phil Keoghan, who in an interview with the AP, said, “I don’t think it’s 8. I think it’s 12. (He confers with his publicist.) It’s been lowered to 8? OK, well, I didn’t know that. That’s news to me.” The official application [PDF] says, “Team members must be at least eight (8) years old but at least one (1) of the team members must be at least twenty-one (21) years old. Any team that has a minor (anyone under eighteen [18] years of age) must also have as a team member at least one of the minor’s parents or legal guardians.” That means that, conceivably, a parent or guardian could race with his or her three kids. The application also notes that five family members (and family is very loosely defined by the rules) may apply, but producers will ultimately send one person home to form a team of four.

Oh, yay! Another TAR thread! I've been catching up on missed seasons on the GSN, but I'm excited for the next season to start. Well, sort of.
I have to admit that I'm very worried about A) a family season of TAR and B) a race that only includes North America. Isn't most of the fun of this show in the experience that the races have dealing with different countries, different languages and different cultures? I just can't see what the challenge will be if everyone is on home turf and everyone speaks English. I am also concerned about teams of four. How will they travel? They won't be able to use cabs because where would the sound and camera man sit? Are they going to issue them vans? I have this nightmare that they're all going to be in matching Dodge minivans, driving around the US. Not to mention, I can't imagine what the fighting and bickering will be like with a whole family stuck in a car together.
Finally, how are they going to make sure that the younger kids get enough sleep? I think they'll really have to make the race a lot easier and...I'm just worried about it. Very worried.

I can't wait for the new season. DH and I were discussing the family aspect... we think it would be cool if all team members started off at a location A (like a detour), and two members had to go to location B and two team members go to location C and then ALL meet back up at location A for the next clue (does that make sense?) Add a little more surprise to the road blocks and detours.
I think at only being in NA is cool. People don't know what is in their own back yard. And I don't think I would be comfortable taking my DS to places in Africa/Asia... some of the places have been scary!! It might only be NA because of the minors.

I love this show, but I'm also a little nervous about the new format for the coming season. Why do they always have to muck with a good thing? But I think I'd be okay with it if they are doing what twainny described--it would be interesting to have the families split up to perform different tasks and have to meet up again to get their next clue...or maybe the different tasks they performed would combine to form the new clue (like a puzzle, going back to the early seasons when the clues weren't so clear cut and there was some guesswork involved).
Anyway, I've got my fingers crossed that the producers are throwing in some interesting twists like this....
And regardless of my qualms, I'll be watching! :p

ITA. The more I think about it, the more I get nervous about all of the different things they will need to do because they are dealing with younger kids and families of 4.
It will be interesting to see some new and different sites around North America, but I still just love that they go 30k or 40K in 30 days in the prior shows.
I didn't start watching until Season 6 and I have been religiously watching the old shows on GSN the past month. I agree that I hope they go back to giving them more puzzles to solve the clues in this season. The last 2 seasons were almost too easy.

It will be interesting to see the way the race affects the family dynamics...one of the things I love about the show is the way it shows how people interact under pressure and reveals aspects of people's personalities that they might not normally display (or want to display). With families of 4, it should be even more intense. (Though hopefully it won't be a lot of "parent screaming at crying kid"-type scenes...not sure if I can take that.)

Here's my question. I assume TPTB have managed a solution to this, but I have no idea what it is. How can a team of people with an 8 year old compete with a team whose youngest is 26? How are they going to make that fair?
Some of the teams look very interesting and I really am looking forward to seeing how they manage this.

The teams are up on the CBS website! But they don't seem to be regular pictures, so I can't figure out how to post them up here. :(
I am actually kind of excited to have something different. I think it'll be fun to see how the larger teams interact (I imagine getting all 4 people to agree on something is not going to be easy) as well as more about our own continent. Sure I love to see them travel around the world, but there are lots of things about the US and Canada that I don't know. I think what makes me not quite so nervous about this change is that it's only temporary. The next season is supposed to be back to normal.
As far as the little kid concern goes, they'll probably be at the same kind of disadvantage that the older couples usually are. But look at how far Meridith and Gretchen were able to go last time. I think that some of it is about speed and strenght, but there are always places where the playing field gets leveled.

I see what you're saying, but I don't think you can compare some of the older people that have been on TAR to an 8 year old. An 8 year old is a child. Adults in their 60s have problem solving skills and physical maturity that an 8 year old simply doesn't posses. Sure, older players might be slower, but they aren't under-developed in the sense that a child is. I can't see what an 8 year old would be able contribute to this race.
I'm not opposed to it and, like I said, I'm looking forward to seeing how they solve this problem, but I am worried that some of these teams are at a severe disadvantage.

Yeah me, too. I'm trying to stay positive, though! If this weren't my very favorite show, I wouldn't be so worried. As it is, I'm kind of attached to the format they have now on TAR and I feel like they're messing with a good thing. I sound so inflexible! :)
I swear, I'm really trying to keep an open mind.

I feel the same way. I thought shows only changed their formats when ratings were down. Why mess with it now? It's such a good show just the way it is. I'm also trying to stay positive.

Yeah, I can see what you're saying, too. So let's look at a team like Rob and Amber last year. IRC, Amber was pretty useless and couldn't make a decision. Yet Rob was able to carry them pretty well. I think the same thing will happen here a bit. They will be at a disadvantage, but I don't think it'll be that huge. Besides, maybe the kids will get discounted admissions into certain places. :D Oh and I bet those teams will have a bit of an easier time making decisions, too, because basically it'll be the parents deciding and the kids following along. Four opinionated adults are not going to get very far very fast.
Anyway, I'm not convinced this new format will be a good thing, either. But it is my favorite show, too, and I am trying to be positive. Like I said before, this isn't a permanent thing, so if it sucks, at least we'll be back to normal next time.

I think the Linz family takes it, followed by the Aiello's. Unless the rules are drastically changed, I can't se a team with little kids winning.

Hello, My name is Meg, and I'm addicted to TAR!
Just got a look at the families on CBS and it promises to be a fun season, IMO...I can't wait to see how the kid aspect gets worked into the tasks....
But I must say, my 3 sisters and I are way cuter than the 4-sister Godlewski team! That should be us up there...I'm sure we could bring the drama twice as hard!
And, P.S.-- if you look at the pic of the sisters team, 3 of them are wearing the same exact shirt, but Christine's is different.... :p

I'm excited that we finally have a date to count down to!
As for the teams, one advantage I can see about having kids is that they don't tend to have their own opinions as much as adults do. So 4 bickering adults have the potential to really self destruct (as we've seen with just 2 adults) where-as the kids are more likely to do what mom & dad tell them to do. Of course, kids also don't handle constant change as well either. It will be interesting but I'm not betting on liking it as much as the original format.

I just looked at the website, and wasn’t too happy to see some families with such young kids. And now that I find out it’s all going to be in NA? Meh. I mean it will be cool to see other parts of our continent, but part of the challenge (as others have said) is trying to overcome the communication barriers and racing from country to country, trying to book all these crazy flights. I just don’t see how this season will be too exciting when you have such young children on the teams. What about sleep deprivation and the (sometimes) crazy Roadblocks (I wonder how they’ll work this) and Detours? I’m just worried that there will be a lot of whiney, tired kids.
However, that being said, I'll try and go in with an open mind (even though this post doesn't seem like it. :p ), and hopefully will be pleasantly surprised. If I don't like it, well no worries, because as elladee said it will be back to teams of 2 next season.

We have a group of friends who gets together every week to watch Amazing Race and have been doing so since Season 2. Almost all of us have applied to the show at some point. We're pretty dedicated fans! :D
Needless to say, this family edition is not going over well with us. Who wants to watch 8 year olds "race" through Arkansas?! (No offense to anyone from Arkansas, it's just an example.) Here's what someone from our group emailed to us all yesterday:
Okay, I call bull----.
Are they going to turn this into a year-long season? Because I have a hard
enough time getting to know all the contestants before there are, oh, about five or six teams left.
Now we're supposed to be following 40 people? Over 12 episodes? Come on!
They really need to strip it down, quit going for gimmicks, and make it smart
again. Like the early seasons where teams had to solve clues and riddles and
puzzles to figure out where to go, rather than giving them a destination and
turning it into a massive sprint.
I'll be watching, but am not getting my hopes up. Season 9 can't get here soon enough.

I'm so excited for TAR tonight!
Although, I was disappointed when I looked at the teams and found the sister team. Doesn't TAR producers know that my sisters and I should have been chosen instead!?! ;) Oh, well! Maybe next family edition, they will pick us instead. :D
I think the families w/ young kids are going to be at a disadvantage. I just don't see the kids having the endurance/speed to keep up...but I could be wrong.
I haven't read anything about this season, are they traveling Internationally still? (sorry if that sounds like a stupid question but I thought normally they're out of the country by now and they aren't)

I was a bit disappointed with the way they changed the game.
I'm not a big fan of the 4 person team. There's too much chaos, too much happening at once, I don't even know anyone's names so far!
And having little kids in it this time, definitely a dumb idea. For most of the challenges, the parents will have to carry the kids along, while the other teams can each take care of themselves. It's a big disadvantage in my eyes.
And they're not travelling internationally anymore?? I hope that's not the case because that's one of the reasons why I loved this show so much... I got so see so much of the world through their eyes. :( No offense, but I've seen New York. I'd like to see someplace different.
Oh well, I'm still a fan of the show and will continue to watch.
So far, I'm really hating the Weaver family (they squeal at everything!)

and the Paolo family (rude and obnoxious):

I totally thought the Linz's would win this leg but dang, they are so mean to each other.
I HATE the Paolo family. How rude they are to the mom and the dad seems like the biggest wimp. Boo!
So far though, it's interesting with the four person teams. I hope they go international too...I'll be bummed if they don't.

I wonder if the ages of some of the competitors might legally restrict as much international travel? (don't know why it would but....)
I actually do not like the gaghan family. I think they're kind of obnoxious and full of themselves.
I don't know who I do like yet....the Black family seemed cute. I was pulling for the Linz family in the beginning, but I'm not sure anymore...The sisters are annoying, the team from jersey is rude and obnoxious (who would let their kids speak to them like that?!?!) the team with the dad and the three girls seems ok, ditto with the father in law/sons team...meh, we'll see.

The first episode of any TAR season is never my favorite. Everyone is always too wound up and nutso. This one was way worse, though. So much screaching... I hope that calms down as we go on.
I'm not a fan of the Weaver family either. As clubqueen said, they seem to be the biggest screachers. Plus that boy seems like a punk. Did you see him just about reaching into the hotdog stand to grab a clue? Rude.
The Palo family is awful. I just don't know what else to say about them. I hope they get eliminated asap.
The Linz Family is ok, as is the Gahan family, but I can't say I really like any of them yet. We'll see.
Overall I'm not really all that disappointed about having the little kids on a team. The Gaghan family definately seem to be able to hold their own (I sure can't run a 7 minute mile...). And they even have the advantage that there are 2 people to make a decision as opposed to 4 (like the Linz family squabling).
I did miss seeing them go to a foreign country on their first day of the race, though. That was fun to see how they handled the pressure of starting a race and a new country all at once. I do believe they will be doing a slight amount of international travel this season, but not much and not far. I think they go to Canada and someplace in Central America.
I was hopeful that it'd be neat to see places in our own country that I'm not familiar with (I think some people snub domestic travel because it's not worldly enough, when really there are great things to see and do here). But so far they've just stuck to my part of the country - not too exciting. So I'm going to reserve judgement on the travel issue until they go someplace else.
I guess that's enough of my rambling for now.

This may be seen as a spoiler to some, so if you want to read it, please highlight with your mouse:
From what I understand, the teams make their way to Toronto and Montreal (I wish I had known, I would've kept an eye out for them!) And apparently, by the time they reach Toronto, there are only 4 teams left. They also are supposed to go to Panama, Belize and Costa Rica. I found this on another website, so this info isn't confirmed.
I guess the Linz family WAS mean to each other sometimes, but I guess I figured it's because they're all siblings so I expect that from siblings. :p
Plus they joked with each other sometimes which I found amusing. But I guess time will tell whether they become more annoying or not.
Edited b/c I can't spell!

Well, i was quite pleasantly surprised! I enjoyed all 2 hours of last nights TAR! :D Some of the things they caught people on camera saying like, "i think pennsylvania is a state" had us laughing so hard. It is harder to keep track of 4 people teams and there was a LOT of talking.
The only team that just made my skin crawl was the Paolo family. If my children EVER talk to me that way! They are the most obnoxious, know-it-all, and down right mean boys i have ever seen. I couldn't believe the things they were saying!
The Linz family made a crucial error right off the starting line when they didn't buy a map. Who doesn't buy a map? The teams that stopped at the tourist info/rest area were smart b/c they almost ALWAYS have free maps! But still a few dollars on a map would've been money well spent. I was disappointed in them.
The Sisters had me cracking up and i thought some of the comments the other teams had about them were mean. Calling them "Desperate Housewives" and "Silicone Sisters". They did get a little redemption later on when one of the teams said something positive... of course it was in the direction of... i didn't think they would do very good. I liked them and thought they were cute. I thought it was cute when Phil asked them the question at the mat and they all answered at once and he said "so do all of you always talk at the same time?"
The Weaver family hasn't gotten on my nerves yet but i did comment on the squeling. They are going to have to think more about their actions too. This isn't a knock on adolescents but... i know when i was one i didn't always think about cause and effect. I thought the boy was going to break his neck several times! He did get that house up in no time though. When the mom fell in front of that buggy it probably saved them from being eliminated. The buggy took a long time!
As always everyone ran like lunatics to their backpacks at the start of the race and HOW many people fell? I would've been more worried about getting hurt since someone almost always gets hurt at the starting line.
The Gaghan family is in shape! Holy cow! Those kids are pretty tough. I don't think a team with children is going to last that long. Like someone else said at some point there is going to be a strength comp and they just wont be able to succeed. Although maybe i am underestimating the parents? But it's inevitable that at some point a team of 4 will pull ahead in a strength comp - They will just have more muscle.
All in all i was happy with the show. It was suspenseful and exciting and i was nail biting at the end when the guys decided to go a different direction than the Black family. I am looking forward to next week!

09-28-2005, 08:05 AM
Well I only saw the first half of it because I was too tired to stay up for the rest (although I did Tivo it), but I wasn't all that impressed. "The Pink Ladies" really bugged me, and I couldn't believe that the widow uttered the words "I think Pennsylvania is a state"!!! Was she joking?! Wow. Also, when one of the families said something like "I think we're going to be clueless the entire time"? Yeah...it's called a map, buy one. Unless they already got Philiminated, I have a feeling that the 8 year old is going to bug.
But how great was it seeing the best friends from Season 1 giving out the clue at the hot dog stands. I can't believe only 1 person recognized them.
Kevin and Drew!!! :D They were AWESOME!!!, and I can't believe no one but that one kid recognized them either. Obviously they're not up to speed on TAR.

I really like the show with the families. I think there's more interaction and dynamics going on and that appeals to me.
I love that the three sisters call their dad Wally. Cracked me up for some reason.
The team of the four sisters really get on my nerves. They are so screechy and their accent just annoys the heck out of me.
And that Paolo family....how terrible. Those boys need to be grounded for life. The dad should have stepped up to the plate and demanded that the boys stop talking to the mother that way. They are just a nightmare.
Sorry to see the Black family go. They seemed very supportive of each other and kind.
Can't wait for next week.
I would love to see the family with the kids win, but I doubt that will happen. SO, realistically I think that the Aiello family will win.

ITA! I could not stand the children, and the mother jsut kept bragging about how they probably the only family that has been all around the world. <GAG>
I am not sure how I going to feel about this season. I have been watching since season two and last night was big disapointment for me. I was utterly bored with it last night and I feel asleep. I felt that going with the families has lost some of the "umph" that I had seen in the past seasons. The only teams that I liked were The father and daughters team (only because it reminded of my sister and the way we are with my dad) and the father and sopn in laws. All of the rest boring or annoying.
It's sad that I'm missing Colin and Jonathan.
I was missing them also. I needed some drama or something!!

I thought AR Family Edition was a dumb idea from the start. But can someone tell me why is it on at 9pm. It would have been more fun to watch it with my kids. If it's a "family edition" shouldn't it be on at a family time? Maybe they think that the racers with kids will go early.
I'm sorry to hear that the Black family were eliminated. I thought it would be the annoying Paolo's and went to bed at 10:30.

I know! I was so surprised that no one seemed to recognize them. Way to watch the previous seasons  I was laughing at their comments about the teams, though!
I wasn't very excited about the Family edition. I've been watching the show since the first season, and I still don't understand what made them want to change their format. Having said that, I don't think it was as bad as I thought it was going to be. I agree with the other poster who said that the first episode is never her favorite. There's always so many teams, and it's hard to keep up with. Of course that was multiplied by the fact that there were four people on the team. I probably won't ever learn all the names, just the last name.
A few thoughts about the teams:
I actually do not like the gaghan family. I think they're kind of obnoxious and full of themselves.
I felt the same way about them.
Did not like the Paolo family! I cannot believe how horrible those kids were to their moether and the way the Dad didn't say anything when she said she was so frustrated. And who throws the clue away?!
I liked most of the rest of the teams, the Bransen Family (dad with the three daughters), Linz Family, etc.
I felt sorry for the Black Family, but mainly for the kids. It's going to be harder seeing kids lose the race than the parents.

Well, this season may not be as bad as what I originally expected it to be; but I most definitely am missing the international travel already! New York and Pennsylvania?? Were the producers trying to put us to sleep or what??? Hope their locations get better; although I know I read somewhere that the race is going to center in the Eastern region of the United States, with some travel to Canada. That really is disappointing. If they were going to keep the majority of the race in the U.S., why didn't they at least have legs on the West Coast?? Nevada, California, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah are all gorgeous, huge open spaces to explore (and get lost in!) I just don't understand this logic.
The Paolo family is truly horrifying. I couldn't believe how those boys talked to their mother. DH said that she has probably made the problem worse because she lets them get away with it until it really upsets her. And the husband...what a worm to allow that to continue!
Funny, at the beginning of the show, DH and I were picking teams that we thought would go pretty far. I chose the Weavers, the Gaghans and the Godlewskis all as decent contenders. Imagine my delight when these were the first three teams to check into the pit stop! :D
Didn't anyone else feel awful for the poor Weaver family for having lost their dad/husband in such an awful accident? How horrible that must have been for them. :(
All in all, I can't wait for next week....as long as they get the heck out of Pennsylvania!!!

The Paolo family is truly horrifying
This family really annoyed me. I couldn't watch them.
I felt bad for the family that got eliminated. The look on the little boys faces made me sad.
I am not fond of the family edition. It seems so bizarre to have 7 year olds competing against adults (who are "children" of someone but are certainly capable of driving, etc).
The Weavers pissed the hell out of me. "I dont' know if they mean the state Pennsylvania." No, they mean the city.
I'm another one who doesn't like the kids on this edition.
Am I the only one who like the Godlewski Sisters? Yes, they are loud. But, they acted just like my 3 sisters and I do when we get together. The TWOP boards really seem to dislike them.

I also missed a fun adventure activity that they typically do during the first leg (i.e. zip line, ice climbling, rock climbing, etc.). I don't like how the kids are limiting so much of what they do.
I admit though that I am fully addicted to this show, so I'll be watching and bitching my way through this season and just hope that next year they have them travel the most miles ever or something like that to make up for this season.

I'm a few days late to this thread, but I am right there with you on the disappointment. One thing I have always loved about TAR is that we as viewers get exposed to these different cities and countries. But I've been all over the US and so I was disappointed that the first episode stayed in the New England area..been there, done that kind of feeling. I hope it gets better....

I know, and I would have gotten such a thrill to have them hand me my clue. :D One of my best memories of Kevin and Drew is them in a taxi (can’t remember which country) bouncing to the music with huge smiles on their faces. :D

I COMPLETELY AGREE.
*Hated* the first episode. Ended up fast forwarding through much of it because it was so darn boring and annoying. How in the world is this an "amazing race" when all the racers do is sit in their cars and talk? And with children involved, there's no real competitive edge. Everyone's too darn friendly to the other teams! I couldn't believe it when they were helping each other out with the tents. I don't think I can bring myself to watch the rest of this season. It's just not the show I love anymore.
That said, I do love the Gaghan family-- cutest kids ever.

i think i liked the first episode despite the fact that they have departed from the normal ways of doing things.. (come on.. the Weaver mother got RUN OVER by a buggy!! whats not to like?? ;) ) Seriously though.. every season i have have a hard time for the first few episodes and then i get in the groove as I get to know the teams better.. its especially hard with SO many people... i didnt always know who was who although they made an admirable attempt at labeling the families at almost every turn. I did think that they spent way too much time covering the ride through manhattan to EMS but I have hope that it will be a fun though different season. I have more patience for this seasons gimmick than last season's gimmick of having Rob and Amber who I thought just just distracted from the fun of the race and put an emphasis on dirty playing that had never been highlighted in past seasons... but thats just MHO.

I have high hopes the season will get better and we'll get to know the competitors on different levels. This is the first I've heard though that they're staying in the US. What's up with that? I love watching them competitors when they are out of their eliment and confused with money and language and everything. That will be a BIG downfall if they don't go overseas.

I thought it was just OK. I switched away in the 10 o'clock hour to watch Nip/Tuck.
But how great was it seeing the best friends from Season 1 giving out the clue at the hot dog stands. I can't believe only 1 person recognized them.
We couldn't remember which season they were from (darn GSN, I just watched all the seasons in a row and got them all confused). I did recognize them thought. That was cool.
Ditto about the Paolo family and their obnoxious (grown) children.
Actually I didn't care for the team that came in first; too much screaming, it reminded me of junior high girls.
But, overall, I'm not as into this version of AR.

I am rooting for the Godlewski team. But....for some reason I am finding myself liking the brother-in-laws with their father-in-law team!:D I think it's great they wanted to do the race together!
*yawn* I TIVOd it and fast forwarded through most of it. First, I feel like I'm on a school field trip. Ooooo - drive to Washington DC from Philly? How, um, tough! Second, a civil war battle? Again, how tough!
The first negative was the family factor. Too many people, many of them unlikable. The second negative is that it's all in the states so far. Seeing contestants struggle (or not, in some cases) with a new country and an unknown language is part of the show's allure. Not this time.

I'm also really disappointed. DH and I love the Amazing Race and this season is a real dud. One of the things I enjoy about the show is seeing different parts of the world, learning their culture and history and watching how they live their everyday lives. I am just not that interested in seeing groups of Americans running around America and re-living American history. It would be more interesting if the groups were not from America, trying to find their way and completing the tasks.

I'm so uninterested I haven't bothered to learn their names, but I thought it was just awful of that dad to blame his son for passing the intersection when it was him who sent them in the wrong direction in the first place. Then he's able to say, it was me, I did it and sent my team in the wrong direction. I never heard him say that he was sorry to his son though. After basically telling him he couldn't even follow one little direction and belittling him in front of everyone. Made me mad.
At this point I'm rooting for the siblings (3boys,1girl) and the father and sons in laws.

No kidding! Even with little kids playing, they could’ve made it a LITTLE more challenging, geez.
I was really hoping [the Paolo family] would run out of gas in the middle of Washington DC.
So was I, and was very disappointed when they weren’t eliminated. Although, the team that was (don’t know their names) I was pretty happy about too, because the dad was such a D*CK! Going on and on about his son getting the directions wrong, and then barely apologizing when it turns out that HE was wrong. Also all that stuff in the end about owning up to things when you’re wrong and not playing the blame game?! Uh, hello! That’s EXACTLY what you did when you though your son got you lost! ASS!

I have to sadly :( admit that i am utterly bored so far this season. I actually fast forwarded through the last 15 mins just to see who won. I am so disappointed. I think there is some great team dynamic still... it's just the tasks that bore me. When Phil came on to say that the last team to arrive would be eliminated i was like... "whoa, already?" I just kept waiting for a difficult task and it never came. I thought it was stupid that only one team could go at a time... i think they should have put in a fast forward so at least one team would've had the option to do something different adding a little suspense... even if just done by editing.
I liked the prize too. That would be awesome! I am sure they made it sound better than it is though. The fine print probably reads "Gas for life equal to or less than 15 gallons every 30 days" or something like that. Still, a free fill up once a month would rock!

I also agree she is annoying, they tell the other boat to slow down, then she says people are being mean when they're heckling her son. I agree...she needs some crazy pills :)

I'm just curious? Who would even consider bungee jumping with 2 small children? That kind of freaked me out. I can not imagine TAR letting those 2 little ones bungee jump!

It cracked me up that the "Desperate Housewives" knew that they were at the end of the pack so they put on all of their clothes. Phil was havng trouble not laughing at them too. It reminded me of when the brothers knew that they were going to get booted in Africa in either Season 6 or 7 (can't remember) so they changed into swim suits & winter hats. Soooo funny!

I actually like the father daughter team. I also thought it was good sportsmanship of all the teams to agree durign that overnight that they would head to the boats in the same order they arrived. The sisters were hilarious, layering on all those clothes! and wasn't it one of them who talked to one of the Paolo boys telling him how horrible he was acting toward his mother?!!!
The Weavers and the praying remind me of that team a few seasons back; they were 2 models and the guy had a mop of curly dirty blond hair; everytime you turned around he was askign G_d for help with this that or the other.

Yeah, the Weavers are people that you like to call hypocrits. It's ok when they do it, but nobody else can be "playing the game". I have to seriously question their christianity at times. Did they just "find God" after dad died, or were they (supposedly) good christians before, because they sure don't act like it most of the time.
I am so sick of the Paolo family. What is wrong with that mother. She thinks its ok that her son talks to her like that, because at the end she just wants him to say "I love you mom". Ummm, ok, slap the crap outa that rotten little bastard you've raised and make him show you some damn respect, even if you are only getting it because you're his mother. He needs a good ass kicking!
I like the Gagnon family, and I didn't even think about the bungee thing, that didn't phase me as a dangerous thing for kids? I guess the entire race could be considered dangerous for young children, I don't know...*shrug*
I love the sisters, but that one that was swinging the bat....come on!! You claim to be a softball player, yet swinging a bat a few times has worn you out?? Isn't she the same one that was crying about directions?? She's like my bi-polar sister, with the poor me's! I did think it was cute, all their clothes on, and then Phil (he's so cute!!!), makes the comment how it's against the law to wear your underwear outside your clothes! LOL
I like this show, and it definitely has its boring and bad points this season. I can't wait for the pairs show to get back to business, with some worldly travel!
Not sure who said it, but I also thought it was very strange that they gave them a trip to Panama as the prize! They were already there, and I'm sure they could care less about getting there again! Too funny, I'd much rather have gas for the rest of my life!
I like the dad and his daughters, I think they are showing him that they are grown women now, and he's seeing them in a different light! I also like the brother sister team, but sis is so down on herself, "I'm not as strong as my brothers, and they know it"...boo fricking hoo, your a girl, who's an athlete, no, your not a boy, but you're still an athlete who can contribute.
Lots of self-esteem issues this season I guess!

Ok...I'm all for praying, but C'MON!! "Help us beat them...according to Your will??" THAT I can't stand. Ugh.
Anyway, I didn't see last week's episode, but this week's seems better than the other episodes that I've seen. That bean task was one that seemed like something we're used to. Reminded me of the clue in the hay stack, or finding the lock that the key fit. Must've been soo frustrating for them!

The hay stack was the first thing i thought of when they started the bean task. Remember that poor girl? She was out there for like 14 hours looking through and unrolling hay! Nuts!

I missed it last night. Who got eliminated?

forgot the family's name but it was the one w/ the 2 young kids.
They were not my favorite family (not my least favorite either) but it was sad to see the little girl trying REALLY hard to hold back the tears. I think this family was a little disadvantaged b/c of the little kids but they really hung in there well!

Aw, that is kind of sad. I didn't love them either, but I had to give them credit for doing this. I was hoping they'd make it a bit further into the race. Plus, there were other I really hoped would go asap.

It's funny, though--ultimately what casued them to lose was the mom's performance in the "find the pebble" task, not the kids. Those kids were troopers--and the family was very cute.
I still haven't decided who I am rooting for (I know who I am NOT rooting for though--Weavers), but I have to say that the NY Italian family is growing on me--shocking, but true. They have no business doing as well as they are doing, but they somehow manage!

The giant tears welling up in the little girl's eyes just broke my heart last night! The family did pretty well all race long considering the kids were so young. I would have like to see them go further - especially since the Weavers & the Loudmouths are still there.

I can't get over the fact that the Paolo family has won two weeks in a row. The race seem to actually be doing them some good. They seem to appreciate their father and how hard he works. I was amazed when the loud mouth boy was like THIS IS TOO HARD (the bananas). The dad was like WE ARE DOING THIS. I like the dad!!
My MIL calls the FL family the "white trash family" I thought that was funny!!
Yea, I thought of the hay too. Or the two brothers a couple seasons ago (the one had a problem with his leg or something, they were heavy and from NY/NJ area I think) they had to find something in the sand. Didn't Phil come out and stop them? They were looking for like 10 hours or something.
The rope bridge thing was sooo easy!!

I was glad to see the Gangly family go. Those kids were annoying! Now if only the Weavers would go next. God is not a short order cook for prayers to win money.

That little girl was breaking my heart! She tried so hard to hide those tears.
They also weren't my favorite, but the Paolo's, they are killing me! How in the heck (thank goodness for dad!!) are they doing it, 2 weeks in a row!
And the Weavers...I hope they see how horrible they are being portrayed on tv and what hypocrits they truly are with their "please God, get us there", crap. They were cutting down on everyone of the other families at that yield, and yet....lets ask God for help. Please. You're gagging me already, stop it!
I do love the names this year "Brady Bunch" "Desperate Housewives", too funny.
I think I'm rooting for either the, ok the best 3 in the end....the Desperate Housewives, Dad Wally and daughters, and the Linz family, especially since it took their sister 21 years to grow her "balls" and join the rest of the family!LOL

I guess I'm in the minority... I was rooting for the family with the 2 little kids.
How were the kids annoying? I didn't find them annoying at all. They were well behaved, never acted out and the family as a whole treated each other with respect (unlike the Weavers and the Paolos).
Those parents must be doing something right. Those kids were more mature and intelligent than many of the adults on the race. "Is that a righto or a lefto?"

There was one time the kids annoyed me (when their parents were pulling them in the buggy) but after that I was kinda rooting for them. They were the underdog and really stuck in there.
The Paolo family is growing on me too. Obviously the kids arent' the nicest to their parents but I think they realize how hard they've worked to give them the life they lead. I wanted to KICK the FL teams ass when they commented on the Paolo family standing in front of a garbage truck. Then they went on to pick apart all the other teams too.
My favorites are still the Linz family.

Yeah, wasn't this right after they said they didn't talk smack about anyone? It seemed at the start that the FL team was going to be the favorite, because they had a sympathetic story, but they are getting annoying.

2 hour show tonight. I didn't realize that till just now.
Looks like it may get interesting, since my "info" on directtv says something about someone needing to be rescued in the water.

As a Christian, I cringe every time they open their mouths. :( They are horrible examples of what Christians should be. Hopefully they're next!

mrs_pell and JenniferEC i couldnt agree more....i cant stand them. i think they are such hypocrites and definitely horrible examples of christians.
i was glad to see the Paolo family go last night - i cant stand DJ. he is so rude and has absolutely NO respect for his parents, but i blame his parents too. anyways i just had enough of them. but i would ratehr have seen the weavers go first, then the paolo's.

Ugh, the Weavers...ITA with the rest of you, they are horrible examples of Christians. Something tells me though they totally are not seeing what the rest of us are seeing on TV...they won't change one bit after this show.
I am cringing at the thought of them potentially winning. Ugh!
DJ is an idiot, but I did love the Paolo dad, so that made me bummed to see them go. Oh well.

Glad the Paolo's are gone! That son just made me want to smack the shit out of him every single week! Absolutely no respect for his parents. My DH was standing behind me last night while it was on....he and I both agreed that the mother should have beaten the child more often when he was young! LOL (j/k of course!). At least she should beat him now! :p
Weavers, what the hell are they thinking??? What kind of christianity are they practicing?? They are just wrong, in so many ways and the mother does nothing but make it worse. I think I said this earlier on this thread (can't remember, or if I said it to myself??), I wondered if they are "new" christians, like after Dad died they "found God" or if they've always been "good christians". I wonder what church they go too, and if their churchmembers see the same crap that we are witnessing?? I hope like hell they don't win!
Now, I'm rooting for Wally and Girls, and Linz family. I do like the Desperate Housewives too, but want to smack the sister thats always driving....can you think for yourself a bit, and tell them when your coming to an exit or something instead of "just driving". Isn't she the same one that cried?? Although I do give them props, my sisters and I would have killed each other long before we got that far in the race! LOL

Did anyone notice that Phil said that there were several non-elimination rounds, rather than giving a specific number like he did last season. Very interesting.
The DJ was totally getting on my nerves. Glad to see him go.
And I TOTALLY agree with what everyone else is saying about the Weavers. Walk the walk, people!
