Something up with LiveJournal?

I've been trying to log on to LJ for a good hour and a half, off and on. It will let me log in, but when I try to go to my friends page or my own LJ...it won't load the page correctly. Anyone else having this problem?

Valleywag initially claimed that a drunken person had gotten in and damaged 40 racks, but an update from Technorati's Dave Sifry says the problem is a widespread power outage.

LiveJournal was unavailable between approximately 2pm and 9:30pm PDT on Tuesday, July 24, 2007. We want to apologize for any inconvenience or frustration this caused.


What happened

Around 2pm PDT there was a power outage in the SOMA neighborhood of San Francisco which affected over 30,000 people in the San Francisco area, as well Six Apart's co-location facilities. This power outage caused downtime in several large networks, including all of Six Apart's services (LiveJournal, Vox, TypePad and Movable Type) and other networks such as Craigslist, Technorati and Yelp. Usually when there are outages (both planned and unplanned) we are able to immediately post a short message to users and site visitors on a status page on LiveJournal, but because this was a full power outage there was a period of time (around 90 minutes) where we could not access or update a status page. We got the status page up as soon as possible, but it was periodically unavailable due to high amounts of traffic accessing the page.

Once power was restored, Six Apart staff began an ordered process of restoring data to each of our sites. This process lasted over a span of several hours, as there is a step-by-step process to bring machines back up and make sure the network is running.


How will Paid members be compensated?

The outage was beyond our control, however we do want to compensate our Paid members for the window of time where the site was not accessible. We have a compensation plan in place and we are working on getting a page up and running with the full details for Paid members to request compensation. We will update this post with information as soon as we have it, and we will cross post to paidmembers as well.


Thankfully, this was a brief outage and not a full internet crash.

For some reason my Friends Page (which is what I have bookmarked) has old posts at the top. When i log in to my friends page the most recent posts are from 9/24? But, when I click on each friends' journal individually it brings the most recent post to the top (from 10/1).

did that make sense? anyone else having this problem?

Are you using an MSN account? I don't get responses at that email, anymore. For some reason they didn't even make it to my junkmail box, so I switched my LJ account to my yahoo address, which I don't really use for anything else. You may want to try switching your email address, if you can.

Anyone else having trouble posting to LJ today?

I click on "post an entry" and am able to enter a title, but cannot write anything in the subject box. I've been trying for hours, both in Rich Text and HTML mode. Nothing works. Posted yesterday without incident, so something seems to be wrong today. Everything is the same on my end- no computer issues- so it looks like this is a LJ problem. Any ideas?

I sent a report to their support dept. but haven't heard anything yet.

I am at work and I got on this morning and it was slow but everything was working. I just tried to get on again and on the top of the page that usually shows the name of the site it says "HTTP 500 Internal Server Error" and then the page itself says:

The website cannot display the page

Most likely causes:
The website is under maintenance.
The website has a programming error.

What you can try:
Refresh the page.

Go back to the previous page.

Is anyone else having this issue? The error message seems like it is an LJ issue but I wasn't sure if my work blocked the page or not. I can't get on LJ on any of the computers in the office. I can still get into every other site I visit daily.
