Well even though I have all my china and it is still 10 months to my wedding I want to show it off.
I chose a Denby Pattern called 'Juice'. However I chose it started to collect some unique pieces and then found out they were discontinuing it. So I went on a buying frenze and got it all. I picked a pattern that is more informal as I am getting my mom's formal china passed down and then this will be my everyday china. My mom's is white with a 18 kt gold strip around it.
Here is mine, I picked the blue and yellow for individual pieces.
Blue - dinner
Yellow - lunch
Blue - ind. pasta
Yellow - Bread and butter
blue outside/yellow inside - mugs
6 blue/6 yellow - dessert bowls

our formal china is Wedgewood Celestial Platinum:
http://www.belk.com/media/images/products/master/china/wedgwood/celestialplatinum/5pps._z1.jpg
this is my favorite part ~ the accent/salad/dessert plate that can go in place of the salad plate in the 5 piece place setting:
http://www.giftcollector.com/ProductImages/29000/29058.lg.jpg
we also got this as our informal china ~ Tabletops Unlimited Carnival (we use the chargers and salad plates):
http://images.replacements.com/images/images2/china/T/P0000192218S0002T2.jpg
It goes w/ our blue and yellow fake fiestaware type everyday dishes except our blue and yellow dishes were really cheap (aka it chips ridiculously easy), so we are going to have to get a new set of the blue and yellow of a different company as our Oneida is discontinued and expensive to get through ebay. we can't afford real fiestaware, but can get any blue and yellow and it'll mix in w/ the Carnival dishes.

Like Juliemag, my formal china is heirloom. Eight place settings of it was my grandmothers, and then my mother registered for another 4 place settings and some serving pieces. I feel very lucky that it's mine, now. :) It is called Lenox Imperial:
http://static.flickr.com/28/62867840_38e33bcac8_o.jpg
For everyday china, B and I registered for Denby Linen (http://www.denbyusa.com/ProductRange.aspx?ProductCategoryId=1216). B and I both love Denby. :) We chose this particular pattern because it is very neutral, and we thought it would be nice to be able to flop out table linens without worry that they wouldn't go with our dishes.
http://www.kitchengoods.com/l/Linen/Denby_Linen_Divided_Dish_B0007D6HS
B's mom gave me the Teapot for a shower gift last weekend. It was the first piece of Denby we received. Pretty exciting! :D

For those who have Mikasa china, check out their Outlet stores if you live near one. They've been having a sale for the last month or so, and I think it's good for another week or so. 25% off most sets. I got the huge set of my Palatial Platinum, the 93 piece set I believe (12 place settings, plus other little extras), for only $489 (retail is something like $1,000). Thought I'd let y'all know.

We thought about getting formal china but my aunt says that I can have one of her sets. She has 4 that she got or is her mothers or just bought on her own. So I have not gone to see her in awhile to pick it out.
We did get the Denby Fire Chili and we love it.
http://www.dillards.com/images/product/hc-393_fi.jpg
It is the plates on the right with the creme inset and the design on the rim. We have the plates, bowls, and salad plates in that. Then they really only offer a few pieces in the pattern. We need the platter. We were in Branson and they have a outlet store that has Denby it it. We bought the casserole dish, it was half off. But it is in the sage and cream colors.
We have the Gorham Lady Ann Hiball Glasses and Goblets.

We chose our formal china first...

Haviland's Val de Loire is our formal choice....
Then I became a china addict and we chose our everyday stuff...
Golightly
09-06-2005, 11:55 AM
After I fully fell victim to full-blown china pattern addiction, we mixed and matched three Gien patterns:
Place settings in...
Filet Bleu:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5d727b3127cce93b683ccbf0500000015108AZtmblm5cNn
Including the tureen which I adore and has the same periwinkle blue as Val de Loire.
and
Pont Au Choux:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5d727b3127cce93b683cb3e3200000015108AZtmblm5cNn
We also got the tureen in this pattern. It is gorgeous and smaller than the Filet Bleu one, perfect for serving chili for 4 or six. We didn't register for the small covered boullibase bowls though. (Having serving pieces in my everyday pattern is great because I am more inclined to use them often and they still coordinate well with our formal pattern.)
And some accent pieces in:
Oiseau Bleu:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5d727b3127cce93b683c13e3800000016108AZtmblm5cNn
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5d727b3127cce93b683b73e4e00000015108AZtmblm5cNn
We registered for ridiculously expensive crystal (which was all I really got excited about AND went with our china) and didn't get any, but I am hoping for a piece or two for future Christmas gifts now again.
William Yeoward's Helena:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5d727b3127cce93b69b9d3e6800000016108AZtmblm5cNn
A very old and special set sterling silverware has been earmarked as mine since I was born. It is priceless to my family and I don't see us using it too too often. So I registered for a nice stainless pattern from William Sonoma that looks great with both our formal and everyday patterns.
Laurel flatware:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5d727b3127cce93b69b9f3e6a00000016108AZtmblm5cNn
Seeing as it's a possiblilty to have nearly all four patterns on the table at once, I really needed something to tie it all together. As it is, our formal china is currently displayed in a built-in china cabinet, so it is all in the room at the same time and I love how everything compliments without matching perfectly.
Oh dear... can you tell I was off my rocker during the registry process?! My then fiance was ready to have me committed.
Cheers!

MsPeachy, I seriously adore your china! We decided not to get any china because we really wouldn't use it (we eat take out at least 3x a week, if not more, lol) but I might have to make FH reconsider. We do try to cook at least once a month, so that would be our special ocassion to celebrate :D Just two place settings for our romantic at home dates.

Hey ladies, those of you have the platinum patterns -- try doing a table setting on grey linens. Wow, stunning. Charcoal was the only linen we registered for, because we were so blown away when the bridal consultant set it up like that with our choices -- how open to suggestion are we? LOL!
Ours is: Mikasa Crown Jewel Platinum:
http://www.mikasaandcompany.com/images/catalog/products/large/AK026201.jpg
A close up of the pattern:
http://www.mikasaandcompany.com/images/catalog/products/large/AK026203.jpg
Our everyday is Mikasa French Countryside, which is nice & neutral for any potential chargers and colored linens. Which dh won't "allow", but there's always hope for him.
http://lnt.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pG01-1230896dt.jpg
But, I wish I had gotten the Antique White instead. I like some of the pieces better.
We just did double duty on our crystal, and got Williams Sonoma for everyday & formal use. We just have the all-purpose for our smaller and did a burgundy for our larger red/ water goblet. Matching DOB's and highballs, which double as our everyday drinking glasses. DH, again, doesn't get the whole "needing 14 types of glasses" thing. I have much training to do.
http://www.williams-sonoma.com/wsimgs/rk/images/products/200747/0012/img23m.jpg
Our "formal" silver, is stainless until we can upgrade. I am the third daughter, and as such got the shaft on the family sterling -- both grandmothers' have already been claimed. We have my grandmother's stainless for our everyday, and are using Oneida Taraza for formal. It matches the bead-dot pattern in the china.
http://www.oneida.com/resources/oneidaConsumer/images/products/processed/T602005A.zoom.1.jpg
We have now decided our silver will be Burgundy by Reed & Barton, unless I find something else I love better before we start getting any!

Everyone has such amazing and different choices.
We have decided not to register for china. I just can't justify the $120 per place setting! We would likely not get anywhere near a full set... and then where would we be?
However, we have found a very pretty (and nicley priced) patteren for our 'fancy' dishes from sears..... it is actually Marth Stewart.. and at $60 for 4 place settings I will never feel guilty if we don't use it!!

:) We will likely spend more on our everyday dishes!!

We went for something very functional. We don't have formal dinners, but we did want something we could use for family dinners and not have to worry about getting broken. We went with Malibu Dune Dinnerware by Mikasa. When we registered for it, the bridal consultant took the plate and whacked it on the side of the table. My DH was so impressed, he didn't even want to look at anything else. We thought we may buy a couple of fancy china settings for us to use for special occasions, but right now I like what we have.
http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/assets/product_images/230/25037104396C.JPG
We have about half of it now. My parents are going to finish up the collection after our reception at the end of September. One thing that we didn't account for was the plate size. Our old microwave is too small so we have to buy a new one to use the big plates in!
We also got this flatware - Cambridge Triumph Sand

I absolutely love it, even though I only have two place settings. My mother and sisters made me take it off my registry bc they promised they would buy me all of it as my shower gift (And didn't want anyone else to buy the place settings). I got the two place settings at my shower, and then they proceeded to tell me "oh, we'll get the rest for you when we have the money, it's not like you are ever going to use it anyway" That was six months ago. When DH and I have the extra cash, I am just going to buy the other six place settings myself.

For instance:
Mikasa Cameo Platinum

I have a question for you ladies - especially the ladies that have china with a gold rim. I inherited a set of china and a set of sterling silver. The china pattern has a lot of gold in it. Here's a picture:
http://images.replacements.com/images/images5/china/M/minton_marlborough_dinner_plate_P0000053727S0004T2 .jpg
When I set the table, I think the silver of the flatware clashes with the gold on the plate. I've always had it ingrained in me not to mix silver and gold jewelry, so maybe that's where this is coming from. ;)
What do you ladies with the gold-rimmed china do? Do you have gold-accented silver or do you just go with the silver colored flatware? Does it look OK?
ETA: Sorry the picture didn't come out so well. The scrollwork on the plate is gold, as well as the center band. It also has a gold rim. There is a navy blue band along the gold on the rim.

This is our "informal" china:
It is Villeroy & Boch, Twist Alea, Lemone
http://www.villeroy-boch.com/fileadmin/picdb/produkte/tk/large/1360gruppe-preview.jpg
We only registered for this informal china and also everyday dishes (from Target) as we knew we would not be having any "fancy" dinnerparties. Not to mention, we only had 100 guests at our wedding and knew we would only end up with one or two place settings of formal china.
I LOVE our china - our kitchen is yellow, blue & white so it matches really well and sits in our hutch. Ironic, because we were married and had the china before we even went house hunting. Everything we registered for and received at our wedding matched our kitchen perfectly when we moved in.

I have gold-rimmed china (Lenox Imperial, posted earlier in the thread) but I have just regular silver (Reed & Barton Spanish Baroque (http://www.silversuperstore.com/reedgraphics/spanbarbig.jpg)). Personally, I'm not a fan of the combination of the gold-accented silver. We do have other gold accents in our formal table, though. We have: White Waterford tablecloth, gold Waterford table-runner in same pattern as tablecloth, gold Waterford napkins, gold-n-white china, silver silverware. We also have some metal serveware that is silver. I wish I could dress the table up just so I could take a picture for you, but no go since it's still in Alaska. :)

Bummer, I wish I could see your table all set! It sounds beautiful.
I am not a fan of the gold-accented silver, either. It seems a bit over-the-top for us - we're generally pretty understated people. Maybe I am just being stupid and the silver looks fine with the china. I imagine it's what most people use with the gold-rimmed china.

This is the stuff we originally were going to register for. They're casual enough for everday use but nice enough (bone china) for nicer occasions. We're not hosting any formal dinner parties anytime soon.

It's meant to coordinate with my mom's china, Lenox Autumn:
http://www.ross-simons.com/images/p0208201c.jpg
I always knew I'd get something plain, and my mom suggested that I get something that coordinates with her china, as I'm an only child and would be getting hers one day. We've set them together and it looks really great.
Our everyday china is Wedgwood Colosseum:
http://www.ross-simons.com/images/p0219838b.jpg
I saw it at Tuesday Morning (of all places) and fell in love! It's pricey at the department stores, but Ross Simons, etc puts some great sales on it. Despite being "china" it's very durable and we put it in the dishwasher and everything.
Re: gold accented china and flatware, I've never considered gold-accented flatware. It's just not me. My mom has never used it with her gold-rimmed china either. It's always looked fine to set the silver next to the gold trim china.

Everyone's china is beautiful, I can't believe how many different styles there are.

We registered for Kate Spade's June Lane... We got about half the place settings we registered for as well as some serving pieces. We hope to add on here and there and get some for Christmas from the family as the years go on! (It's very expensive!)
Anyway...here it is....we just love it!!!

fierypyropixy, I read thru this whole thread yesterday and saw your original post. Another "coinkidink" - when I registered for the Kate Spade china, it had just come out in stores here. In fact, it wasn't even in Dillards yet, where I needed to register for DH's family. So, I registered for Lenox Coronet Platinum with the accent plates that you posted. I loved it too, but did end up returning it because I ended up with my full set of Kate Spade. How funny that we have such similar taste!

That is just too, too bizarre . . . we were registered in Dillard's too, mostly for family reasons . . .
Ours didn't carry the Kate Spade, though, and I think they still don't . . . maybe it was a North Carolina vs. Tennessee thing?
Unfortunately, only my grandmother and aunt, and sister-in-law decided to go for the china (everyone else only thought of getting a gift the day of the shower, etc, and Dillards kept nothing in stock. argh. so they all went for the Bed Bath and Beyond registry . . .), so . . . I decided to go half and half . . . 6 sets of each pattern . . .each goes well with the Paris and the silverware we chose, so I guess I get to enjoy both sides of the fence!
(My poor husband can't for the life of him understand why we even NEED the china, or why I keep bringing it out for simple hamburgers and fries nights . . . sigh. men!)
Ok, hijack over :-)

How is everyone's china holding up? I originally was not going to register for china (our lives are not that fancy and I already have too much clutter in life). However, I read the other day that china is much stronger than average daily dishes and can/should be used everyday...why pack it up in the closet for special occasions (yes, for burger and fries nights). I am wondering opinions on this concept...of course, I would then lean towards the china that is not $30 for a plate so I wouldn't feel horrible if one did break...Thanks

Somebody else does this... I can't remember who but if you dig up the old WC thread she posted that she used hers everyday.
I think that if you drop a plate, you drop a plate, regardless of the cost you know? How often do you drop plates? I think in the 3 years I have had my current set (everyday cheap stuff), I have dropped one once. If you want to use china, I would make damn sure it was dishwasher safe for one (I don't think you want to handwash it all right?) and that it doesn't have any embellishments that will wear off over time. I'm actually thinking about using my silver for everyday wear. It's not that fancy and it can go in the dishwasher.

From what I understand, bone china is very strong, and unfortunately, that's the expensive stuff. I can attest to the strength of bone china. I have a plate rack hanging on my wall to display plates. Some of my bone china salad plates were on there, along with some cheaper china I have. One day, the whole thing fell off the wall onto the hardwood floor. The cheaper china smashed to bits; my bone china plates survived intact. I was totally amazed.
I second what the people say about making sure your china is dishwasher and microwave safe if you plan on using it every day. The main reason we don't use our china every day is because I don't want to have to hand-wash the dishes. My china has gold on it that would wear off in the dishwasher, and it is also not microwave-safe. We microwave leftovers a lot and that is just not possible to do with my china.

Regarding using your silver for everyday use, I read that the more you use it the better the polish will stay. The more it sits the more it tarnishes. I think it is a great idea.

That's actually why I was thinking of using it everyday. The pamphlet they gave me said that if I don't use it everyday, I should still send it through the dishwasher every now and then anyway to keep the tarnish away, so I figured we may as well use it right? Otherwise I am supposed to keep it wrapped up in special anti-oxidation clothes.

Our china (Vera Wang Grosgrain) was purchased online. The packing was awful...basically the individual boxes were in a big box with no extra packing materia. We were certain the china would be broken, especially since there was a lot of dammage to the outer box. However, the china was perfect with no dammage. I had not planned on using the dishwasher with the china, but at that point I realized the stuff must be strong to make it to us. We are keeping our eyes out for some more casual bone china, which we would use on a more regular basis.

What do you ladies with the gold-rimmed china do? Do you have gold-accented silver or do you just go with the silver colored flatware? Does it look OK? I compared both and actually thought the gold-accented silverware was a bit too much with the gold-accented plates. It makes the whole placesetting really royal feeling, which doesn't really fit with my decor considering I don't live in a palace ;). The lady at Christofle (which is the gold-accented silver I was considering) highly recommended NOT pairing our dishes with gold-accented silverware as it takes away from the dish.
What did everyone do about completing their china? After a lot of phenagling with our registry and returning stuff we didn't really want, I now have 6 complete settings plus the serving pieces. I can't imagine that we will have more than 6 ppl eating at our current table (it won't fit more than 6 ppl), so that's ok for now. But man... completing the remaining 6 settings, plus virtually ALL Of our silver which no one touched is going to cost soooo much. I'm worried that one day I'll hear that the pattern is being discontinued and have to suddenly fork over thousands to complete the set .

What did everyone do about completing their china?
What we did is probably not the norm...we registered for 16 placesettings of china, crystal and silver b/c we both have large immediate families. I really can't remember how much of it was purchased as gifts, but we just decided to bite the bullet and finish off the rest of it. We figured there would never be a time in life when we would have that kind of disposable income again considering how expensive kids are (!) so we just did it right then while we had the money. So now I have 16 placesettings of everything. I'm glad we did it b/c now I don't have to worry about not having enough or the pattern being discontinued.

How is everyone's china holding up?
Well, my formal china (Lennox Hayworth) hasn't made it out of the box, but my everyday dishes are bone china and they're doing great. The pattern is Wedgwood Colosseum. I've broken maybe one plate in the 2 years we've had it. It goes in the dishwasher and the microwave. The only thing I'm a picky about is it going in the fridge. I don't want to subject it to extreme temperature swings (such as the fridge to the microwave) causing fissures under the glaze. It was a bit pricey for everyday dishes but I love it and it makes us happy. So, why not?
What did everyone do about completing their china?
I registered for 12 place settings and got 11. I returned 3 so I'd have a set of 8, and put that credit toward some crystal and silver. I've only got 5 ps of the silver (Gorham Fairfax) and have 8 ps of some of my crystal, 4 of others. I actually found it (Waterford Lismore) at Sam's of all places. And, it was a great price. I just need 4 more stems of the goblets and I'll have a full set of 8.

What did everyone do about completing their china?
We only got about half of our formal china-- and not in full place settings, so it's really mismatched right now. It was too expensive for us to complete the whole set, so we've just kept the registry open so that family members can continue to purchase it for birthday/ Christmas gifts in the future.
We do have some Macy's gift cards that we'll probably put towards the rest of it after Christmas.

For those of you fretting over completing your china, crystal, silver - there are birthdays and Christmas and anniversaries for years to come! Patterns being discontinued? No sweat! Companies like Replacements will have those patterns forever (well, maybe not really but darn close). Seriously, I don't think anyone should think they need to receive it ALL as wedding gifts and that if they don't, they might as well return it all and forget it. I think brides should expect to complete their pattern over time.

We bought a 12 place setting of our china at the Mikasa outlets in Branson for only 1/3 of what their store cost was! So now we have 20 place settings total (we have large families!). :D Now it's on to the silverware (we need 12 more settings) and the crystal (which hasn't been touched yet).

Awesome. We did the same thing. I didn't feel that we would use china enough to warrant a brand new pattern, plus, I've always loved my gramma's. And it's almost like, what's the point of everyone having something to pass down, if everyone gets a new set and no one passes theirs down? We also asked for a few serving pieces of plain white, rimmed in gold to supplement since she didn't have the crazy amount of stuff that most sets now have.

Well, I am a "china addict", so I have at least three sets: The first is Johann Haviland's Blue Garland. I started collecting it when I was quite young and it seemd very much like what "proper china" should be. It is lovely for bridal or baby showers, although I have a service for 12!
http://www.robbinsnest.com/JohannHaviland/images/jhbggroup.jpg
The next is Spode's Woodland. DH and I staretd collecting it when I lived in Staffordshire in theUK, and we were able to purchase several pieces from teh pottery where it is made. It is great for aumn or winter events
http://www.giftcollector.com/ProductLineImages/737.pp.jpg
The last is Kate Spade's Grammercy Park. I Just love it and I use it for less formal or summer events:
http://slimages.macys.com/is/image/MCY/products/8/optimized/140968_fpx.tif?bgc=255,255,255&wid=273&qlt=90,0&layer=comp&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.7,1.0,0.5,0&fmt=jpeg
Ths doesn't even count the service for 8 of my grandmother's that my dad unexpectedly gave me as a wedding present. It is unlabelled as to manufacturer but it is 8, 5 piece place settings, ivory bone china with a large 18k gold border. I don't have a picture of it.

We have DH's grandmother's set of Lenox Autumn:
http://ec3.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00027OFHU.01._AA280_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg It's really lovely but we rarely use it--it's so formal.
What I would love to have eventually is something funky from the Kate Spade line: I love both the "June Lane" and "Corona Grove" patterns.

LOVE that Kate Spade Grammercy Park - my husband said it was "too girly" for us. :p

My main pattern is Wedgwood's Madrid, but I also incorporate some pieces from Wedgwood's Celectial Platinum (accent/salad plates, soup bowls, serving pieces, etc.). Both patterns have the same trim, so they go perfectly together.
Madrid:

Celestial Platinum:

I love the rim on the accent/salad plates (far left). If the whole pattern had been like that, I might have just gone with the whole set.

laura - well I said that if we had the "manly" dead bird china (Spode Woodland) that he loves so much (and in reality, I do too) then I needed a pretty uptown pattern (Kate Spade, Grammercy Park) as well. It works out niceseasonally becaus ethe Spode feel sright in autumn through winter and teh Kate Spade for sroing and fall. One of teh benefits of marrying later in life combining two completely stocked houses is tat you can register for completely non-necessary stuff!

meatpie: Fortunoff (www.fortunoff.com) has a HUGE selection, even though they only have stores in the NYC area. Also, the Knot has a huge online china selection.

Actually, I wasted so much time perusing china on websites to be totally honest. When I went to see them in person, I ended up not liking them. Then I had the additional problem of choosing a pattern, then having to choose a registry store around that (since not all stores carried that pattern). I really recommend that you go to your local dept stores, where you are interested in registering, and just seeing what they have.

You can get some ideas by looking at websites like Macys.com but I agree with tlew12778 that often china looks very different in person in how it reflects teh light and how glazes are applied.

Mine is Touraine by Noritake. It's really not anything I'd pick out on my own, but my grandfather brought it back from Japan after he did his thing there in WWII, and now it's mine. :)

For everyday dishes we have Fiestawear in Cobalt Blue, Turquoise, Persimmon, Shamrock, Sunflower and Cinnabar. I LOVE it, it's so fun!
Okay I know this is an old quote but I was just reading through the thread and came across it and it made me do a double take. We have the same flatware but not the satin (I wanted the satin but my dh preferred the regular) and the exact same fiestaware colors just without the shamrock. Apparently great minds think alike! :D
However we don't have any fancy china. My mom has several sets that I will eventually get so I just (actually last week) picked up some basic white with a platinum edge porcelain that Linens 'n things had on sale. I found some other pieces at Target that matched and some accent pieces with silver snowflakes that I liked to add to it. So it isn't anything expensive or fancy but it works for what I need right now.

we have 2 sets of formal china. both were handed down to us.
I can't find pictures or additions to either set.
we *thought* we found the set at Macy's but after it was ordered it was VERY different even though it had the same name.
we have Mikasa 'cambridge' and Crown N Ming "Jian Shiang"
wow I actually just found it on replacements. it wasn't there 6 years ago:
http://images.replacements.com/images/images5/china/M/mikasa_cambridge_salad_plate_P0000058210S0009T2.jp g
the crown N ming I still cannot find.
I really don't like either of them. I'm in love with my grandmothers which she has promised to me, and I'll gladly wait for them, as I get to use them every holiday anyways. :)
