View Full Version : Quick! I need an idea...

Instead of our normal pizza lunch this Friday at work, we're bringing in dishes to pass and donating the money that would have been spent on pizza to a charity. (We're also having a silent auction at the same time.)

I'd like to bring something fun and different in, but I have a logistical problem, and also only a little over 3 hours to come up with an idea! (I forgot about the deadline for signing up. :o )

So, the logistics- if I make something at home and bring it in, I have to transport via a 45 minute commuter train ride and then a 1/2 mile walk. Which means crock pots and triple layer cakes are pretty much out.

Also, people have already signed up with the easily-carried staples: brownies and chocolate chip cookies.

I'd prefer to make something, but I could buy something and bring it in... But I'd want it to be something really fun, not a deli or vegetable tray- that sort of thing. (For example, someone signed up to bring White Castle sliders. I think that's a cool idea.)

So, any ideas? It can be an appetizer, side dish, entree, dessert, salad, whatever. There's still room for pretty much anything.

My standard for work potlucks is to bring in a triple mexican dip plate...homemade hot tomato salsa, not so hot corn salsa and guacamole. With plenty of chips. It doesn't have to stay refrigerated, tastes great at room temp, easy to eat.

Or you could do a fun fruit plate with dipping sauces, like a chocolate fondue and a yogurt or whip cream or even caramel. Include some cut up pound cake or graham crackers. Easy to put together at work. Just remember, if you put alcohol on the fruit, it is nice to label it as such :)

I think people have already signed up for salsa and guac and chips, but a sweet dip is a great idea, especially one that involves fruit so I could at least pretend it's a little healthy. ;) I'd love to do the chocolate fondue but I think it might be hard to bring in all the stuff to keep it melty, but I know I saw somewhere recently a cream cheese dip that tastes like cheesecake. Thanks for the ideas boilermaker!

Here is a recipe for a fruit dip. Very tasty, but not so healthy. ;)

Creamy Fruit Dip
8 ounces cream cheese -- softened
1 jar marshmallow cream

blend the two together and serve with fruit.

I don't know- you've got your fruit group, your dairy group, and your fluff group- what's unhealthy about that? ;)

Thanks for the recipe, that looks plenty easy and yumm-ay!

Hmm, what about an italian pasta salad?

You could get one of those insulated bags to carry it in and keep it cold.

Ditto.

Maybe you could bring those little quiche cup thingees. Those are always yummy. If you have a costco nearby that works.

Considering this thread is from almost a year ago, I think the OP got it taken care of.

LOL. It seems like KiewiStyles attempt at a snarky comment was nearly a year late. That cracks me up.

Late retaliation for the indoor/outdoor cat thread? ;)
