I'm going to Jamaica for the second time next month. Right now we're booked at the Sunset Jamaica Grande in Ocho Rios - the price is right and the pools look spectacular, so it was a good choice. Of course, now I'm having my usual 11th hour vacation panic attack, mainly because I kept looking at other resorts around the island instead of just being content with my selection. I do this every time I travel. It does not matter how great of a deal I got, I always second-guess it.
I'm thinking about switching the hotel reservation to the Sunset Beach Resort & Spa in MoBay, for a few reasons: 1) the beach looks nicer in the pics and I plan to spend almost all of my resort time either at the beach or next to a pool, 2) I would be able to spend time in Negril and MoBay, both places i haven't visited yet (already been to Ochi once - went ATVing, climbed Dunn's River, all that jazz), and 3) it's so close to the airport that I won't have to step off the plane and then be subjected to a 2-3 hour drive just to get to the resort.
The resorts are pretty comparable, though the SJG is nicer due to a recent renovation and having more pools. The SSB has a water park and is geared more toward families. Not bad in and of itself, although I've heard the kids crowd the swim-up bar, which could be annoying. The SSB has fewer pools, which means less space to stretch out and seek peace and quiet. I'd really rather stay at the SJG, but I'd like to stay in MoBay just so that I can go to Negril so I'm still considering the SSB.
The price difference is negligible (~$30). We're doing the Irie Adventure tour no matter where we stay, so we'll still do the Martha Brae rafting tour and climb Dunn's River Falls (again). The big difference will be the ability to explore Negril and MoBay - if we stay in Ochi, I'll probably only head west once, which means having to choose between the two. Is visiting MoBay and Negril worth switching resorts?
And yes, I know I'm over-thinking this. :o I'm pretty certain I'm going to switch the reservation, but I'd like some feedback from those who have visited Negril and MoBay that it's worth it.
