I have acquired an old dining room hutch and butler piece from DH's sister. I had wanted to strip it and restain it, but it is veneer and can't be done. So know I am thinking of just painting it black and giving it an antiquing kind of finish.

Is there a special kind of paint I need to use? Is spray paint or brush on paint better? How exactly would I do the antiquing? Any help would be grateful!

Thanks so much!

If its a plastic wood veneer, you probably want to prime it first with paint made to adhere to plastic. There are a few options out there.

I think spray will give you a better smooth finish but its a definite PITA. If you are doing some kind of antiqueing finish, you can probably get away with brush streaks.

Ugh, veneer.

Definately get a primer made for plastic surfaces unless you want a mess. I have a night stand that I just painted. I sanded the furniture, then used a paint/primer combo (Kilz), and when I went to "antique" it, it pulled the paint off in sheets. So I repainted it and just varnished it....and I hope it stays on.

There are a few ways to antique furniture...and you'll basically get the same results.

You could purchase an antiquing kit which is a base and glaze. I'm pretty sure the base goes on and dries, then you brush/towel off the glaze. There are a few products at Walmart and home improvement stores that you can get.

Or you could paint the furniture, then use sand paper on all edges and high areas to give it the antique look.

Or you could tie each piece to your car bumper and drag it in a parking lot. Brush it of and voila, it's antiqued. I don't recommend this method although it's the quickest. :P

That is just too cute. LOL. I don't think I would want to try that either. ;)

Thanks for the ideas. I will look into that stuff. I have to hit up Lowe's next week so I guess I will look around there and see what Ican find. I didn't know there was a special primer for plastic. You learn something new everyday.

Thanks again girls!
