What's wrong with people?!?

From CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/26/clinic.bomb/index.html):

An explosive device "which could have caused substantial harm" was found Wednesday in the parking lot of an Austin, Texas, women's clinic where abortions are performed, authorities said.

"It was configured in such a way as to cause serious bodily injury or death," Austin Police Assistant Chief David Carter told reporters Thursday.

An employee reported the suspicious device at the Austin Women's Health Center, and Austin police responded at about 2:15 p.m. The employee also notified the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as per clinic protocol, police said.

Southbound lanes of nearby Interstate 35 were closed as bomb technicians detonated the device, and the clinic, an insurance agency and an apartment building behind the clinic were evacuated.

Some people only care about life under selective circumstances, I guess.

That kind of violence or attempted violence is so evil. :(

The bomb planter doesn't agree with abortions, but wanted take the lives of women, doctors, and nurses. Riiiight, that makes so much sense.

A friend of our family's sister was a nurse who was severely injured in one of the clinic bombings several years ago in Birmingham, and I know the effect it's had on her and her family. I will never understand how anyone can justify killing/injuring people in an effort to prove that killing a fetus** is wrong.

** not starting any debates or battles - I'm pro-choice, I understand how/why some people are pro-life, just stating that that's clearly the opinion of someone who targets abortion clinics as wrong!!

I think most sane people would agree with you.

I would think/hope so, too, but this is such a touchy topic that it seemed better to stop any misunderstandings before they could start...

I don't get it. I am pro-life, but as everyone else stated, this is not pro-life in any way. People are crazy.

It's outrageous on so many levels.

I know of very few clinics where their only service is providing abortions. Many clinics serve as OB/GYN offices, as well (The Planned Parenthood I volunteer at here is one such clinic)--and one of these days these nut jobs are going to kill a woman who is getting care because she is pregnant and wants to keep her baby. Will that stop them? I doubt it.

Some people have some serious issues. I cannot see how this would serve any purpose. Alright so you don't agree with abortion, well going around killing innocent people really doesn't prove that point.

As someone who is vehemently pro-life, words cannot express my disgust at incidents like this.

Except to say that I don't claim anyone who is behind such a thing in the pro-life camp that *I* belong to.

I think this might have been the same clinic I went to for birth control and exams when I was uninsured living in Austin a few years ago. :( It's really sad and misguided that people try to blow up clinics that also work to prevent unwanted pregnancies in the first place.

I feel bad for pro-lifers when stuff like this happens. It's like really right-wing Christians who are all for the destruction of Islam and the like. Most Christians aren't like that, but it tends to give all Christians a bad name. Same with the pro-lifers.

It sickens me that someone would do something like this. I'm just glad it didn't go off.

This is never the answer; I can't believe in this day and age anybody, even a crazy nut, thinks it's a solution.

OK, this is freaking me out. I did not know about this. I was sick last weeek, and stayed in bed Wednesday through Friday. Iwent out on Saturday, and Saturday evening, I saw a guy who looked familiar. Remember an HBO documentary called "Soldiers in the Army of God"? There was a young guy, funny looking beard, underbite? I saw him here, talking to some other young guys, all men, all young, maybe four or five of them total. I recognized him and thought, "Oh, it's that guy, the one who said he wants to do something violent to 'save babies.'" It freaked me out a bit, but I thought nothing else of it.

As someone who is pro-choice, I definitely can recognize that the majority of pro-life/anti-choice/whatever you want to call it people are JUST as appalled by news like this as I am. And seriously, even if I disagree with the pro-life movement, I absolutely support one's right to freedom of speech or the right to protest. Heck, I protest things all the time!

The main thing is, violence solves NOTHING, and violence is never the answer to accomplishing the change you want in this world...especially if you are protesting something you believe to be violent. (I don't see abortion that way, but I realize some people perhaps do see it that way.) There is PEACEFULLY assembling as a group, but honestly, as for the whole pro-life movement goes, whether protesting as some nutcase with bombs and violence, or as an individual just standing there with a sign with a fetus photo, I think it is MUCH more effective to just contact the lawmakers and policymakers directly.

It's kind of like how even though I am extremely anti-war, I think it is absolutely DISGUSTING that a few really stupid people protested the war right near the funerals of soliders. The soldiers really have nothing to do with whether or not we are at war and what the president or congress decides to do about it. The soldiers are the brave people who stepped up to the plate and signed up to defend our country REGARDLESS of whether or not they agreed with any particular war going on.

Likewise I think it's in bad taste to protest abortion RIGHT outside an abortion clinic. At least take it to the Capitol or something.

If I were with my family on Thanksgiving while they were carving a big juicy turkey, I might not eat the turkey myself, but I certainly would not go around shoving PETA literature covered with photos of dead bloody animals and start shouting, "meat is murder". I make my choice not to eat meat. However, it is not my place to force others to eat the way I do. And I would be appalled if some nutcase bombed a hog farm or something or a meat packing plant.
