Is anyone interested in baseball? I grew up playing softball and have always loved watching baseball. I get so into the games sometimes, I just get so caught up in it.

DH and I are trying to do a stadium tour. It has always been my dream to go to all the stadiums. I love walking into a new ballpark. Its amazing to see how each one is unique unto itself. So far we have been to 9 stadiums. We are revisiting Phildelphia this year since they opened a new ballpark last year.

I am a diehard Yankee fan. Always have been. One thing I hate are people who claim they are Yankee fans until they start losing. Can we say bandwagon jumpers? LOL Its happens here in NY alot. Since 1995 when the Yankees finally started doing really well again it seems as if everyone was a fan. Now this year that they are having problems and not doing so well, all of a sudden those same people are Met fans. Or even better- now they are NY fans. What's up with that? I've been a fan through thick and thin. Oh- DH is a diehard Met fan. It makes for some interesting times at home. Especially during the 2000 world series. LOL

Anywho- any other fans out there?

I'm a Dodgers fan. I grew up in Southern CA. Now, I live in Ohio and DH is an Indians fan. I root for them, unless it's interleague play and they are playing the Dodgers or any team that could effect the Dodgers. :p DH took me to an interleague game a couple of years ago, at Jacobs Field. It was the Indians vs the Dodgers. People in that stadium did not like me. Think I shouldn't have worn my Dodgers gear? :D BTW...Dodgers won. :D

Red Sox fan here, but I promise to play nice if you will bunny nose. ;)
DH has always wanted to do a stadium tour, too. We may be going to Camden Yards on vacation this year. Two years ago, we went to Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame. We had a blast.

Of course I'll play fair. ;) Hey- I have a huge crush on Johnny Damon :p

We went to Fenway a few years ago and I loved it. I think it was the year the monster seats were first there. That stadium is beautiful! Have you ever done the ballpark tour there? I think it cost us $6 each. It was great. They take you everywhere, even on the field, in the dugout, and what I couldn't wait to do- go out to the monster. It was awesome. I'll have to scan one of my pics in so you can see.

We've been to Camden Yards, another beautiful stadium. I always say I love Fenway for its old time feel, and Camden for its newer feel. They also have a ballpark tour that is very good. They also take you on the field and into the dugout. I get the chills every time I do one of these tours. Whatever you do, don't go to the Babe Ruth Museum, such a waste of time and money. Spend time at Inner Harbor- you'll love it.

Let me list where we have been: Yankees, Mets, Boston, Baltimore, St Louis (have togo back when new stadium is built), Wrigley, Philadelphia ( going back in a couple of weeks), Marlins, and Tampa Bay. There is a slight chance we may get to Detroit this year. Now that I am pregnant though, I guess our stadium tour will have to be put on hold. ;)

So- I think the Yankees are a game and a half out. Honestly, I don't think they stand a chance this year. I've been saying that since the beginning of the year. Everyone is getting old and worn out- hey you can't win forever. At least this proves that you can't "buy" a world series as so many have said they do.

Ok- I've rambled on and on. It for now! ;)

Deffinatly a hometown girl and love the orioles even though they have been sucking lately. It is crazy how many baseball "fans" come out of the wood work when DC got the nationals. I have been to one nts game so far this year and will be going to another at the end of august. I have loved baseball/softball for as long as i can remember. My brother played tball/baseball since he was like 5, my dad and grandmother always watch baseball on tv so its always just been around.

My bf and i would love to hit every stadium eventually. So far we have only been to camden yards and rfk. when he was younger he went to something in tx (he doesn't remember) so we aren't counting that. We want to do them all together, no if only we could hit to lotto and be able to afford to go.

I'm a die-hard Mariners fan and always have been! (Hey, bunnynose, I think Steinbrenner is trying to reassemble our '95 team!) I know this isn't our year, but with Ichiro, Richie Sexson, Adrian Beltre, Jeremy Reed, Mike Morse, Raul Ibanez, Willie Bloomquist and Jose Lopez on our roster, the next couple of years will *definitely* look up!

My dad and I have always wanted to do a baseball stadium tour - we might, after I graduate this spring.

(Hey, bunnynose, I think Steinbrenner is trying to reassemble our '95 team!)

That's funny- I didn't even think of that. LOL You are right though. I gotta tell ya- Ichiro scares me everytime he gets up to hit. He is such a good player, another one Steinbrenner will go after in 10-15 years cause he thinks he might still be good. He's good at doing that- going after the big names when they are just a little past their prime. But he gives up guys like Alfonso Soriano- I'll never understand that one.

Randy Johnson pitched a really good game last night. Won 4-0 and he had a no hitter going into the 6th or 7th I believe. DH, the diehard Met fan in my life, put the curse on. He said, "Hey honey, your team got a no-no going" And with that the next pitch was a hit. He does it all the time, I wanted to kill him. LOL Did Boston win last night? Haven't had time to look yet.

Oh- I should also add to my stadium list the minor league ballparks I've been to: Staten Island Yankees, Trenton Thunder (Yankee affiliate), St Lucie Mets, and Tampa Yankees. The first three I've seen games at- the last I was only there for spring training. I love doing this stadium tour, it is so exciting. I love showing off my photo album to friends. I still have to hit RFK though. We were trying to this year, but neither DH or I are working- so money is a little tight. And yeah, I agree- you gotta do it together. DH had been to the Marlins before we met, I told him it didn't count he had to go again.

Well, it for now!

Braves fan here. My dad has been a Braves fan ever since they were the Milwakee Braves - his side of our family is from Wisconsin. His very first game he ever went to with his dad when he was 5 was a Braves game. So it was pretty much be a Braves fan or die in our family! lol.

I also played softball growing up, from the ages of 5 - 16.

I LOVE BASEBALL.

FH thinks it's hot when I yell at the players or the umpires while we watch the games. lol.

FH thinks it's hot when I yell at the players or the umpires while we watch the games. lol. - That's great! I wish my DH felt the same way. He seems to not like it that I love sports. Leave it to me to find the one guy who wouldn't be turned on by that. We were just in Florida for a few weeks. I wanted to go to a Marlins minor league game in Jupiter. We never went, instead he took me to the mall. I hate shopping. I get so pissed sometimes.

So- Manny Ramirez wants to be traded. Oh my! I read that one of his problems is loss of privacy up there in Boston. What does he expect? To be a great player and not be out there? Sometimes I think people really don't know what they are getting themselves into. I mean he grew up steps from Yankee Stadium- he has to know whats involved. What team is going to pick up that paycheck though? Not many can afford to take his contract. We will see this weekend- trade deadline is midnight July 31.

I'm an underdog fan! :D

This year, I'm cheering for the Yankees. They've improved lots and I think that's because I've been cheering for them :p

Last year, I cheered for the Yanks as well, even though I knew that Boston was going to win. They just wanted it more last year.

The year before, I cheered for the Marlins, all season long! And I live in the Bronx, that was rough.

Before that, I cheered for the Mets. I grew up in Queens and usually consider myself a Mets fan, except for when I'm trying to "help" another team. :D

My FH is a diehard Yankees fan. We have tix for the Yanks vs Angels game tonight. Pretty psyched!

Huge White Sox fan here I'm a South Sider by birth, and I'll die before I ever root for the Scrubs, I mean Cubs
I hear ya on that. I would never root for the Mets. I almost died in 1986 when the Series was Mets against Red sox. I had noone to root for. Oddly enough, that's the year I started liking football alot. Coincidence? :p

catch I'm the same way with basketball. I like the sport but never really had a favorite team. I would find one team or another to cheer for. But DH is a diehard Nets, so I have swayed that way. No swaying in baseball though. ;) You live in NY- I'm sure you hear all those people who are diehard Yankee fans until they start not playing well, like this year. All of a sudden they are Met fans, no matter how bad they are doing. Then they consider themselves NY fans. Ugh, I hate people like that. I called my BIL out on that this year cause that is exactly what he is doing. Now he hates me- his birthday is next month- I'm getting him a Mets shirt. LOL I asked him one day, "So what you are saying is that if you lived in California you would cheer for 5 teams. Correct?" He said, "No only one." So I said, "Well then how come more than one in NY?" He got pissed and walked off. LOL I don't mind people like you who admit to not really liking one team over the other, just the ones who say they are diehards until the team goes bad.

Have fun at the game tonight. Look for the Road Trippers- they are super nice. I met them at Shea during the Yankee-Met series. DH even got on the show.

Have a great weekend all!

bunny nose, you see, I do have a favorite basketball team, the Nets as well :D

FH and I were discussing the 1986 series the other day. He said that's the only time he ever rooted for the Mets, anti-Boston. As for me, I remember that day as the day I learned how to spell my name, lol. My dad had bought me a big Woody Woodpecker coloring book and I didn't want my brother (who was watching the game with our dad) to take it. I was 5 :p

And I totally know what you mean about those people who only root for teams only when they're winning. Drives me insane!! I remember in high school, I was into the Yankees in 1996 and my friends thought I was a "tomboy", just because of that. But then come October, they were all "let's go Yankees". It would drive me nuts! I brought it up once and they told me that I didn't invent "being into baseball" LOL! The following Spring, they had forgotten all about baseball, til October came around again.

Yanks lost tonight, 4-1. Disappointing. There was a very annoying couple sitting right behind me rooting for the Angels. I didn't mind the rooting so much, except that they were making fun of the Yanks whenever they weren't rooting. Why is that necessary? Yeah, whenever the Angels struck out, I let out a whoop, but that's mostly because of a good play the Yanks made, not because the Angels were getting struck out. The girl was all "thanks A-Rod for striking out, you're a gem!" That's not even a good line!! lol :D I had to turn around and roll my eyes at her, I couldn't help it. When the game was over and the Angels had won, she and her bf were all high fiveing each other. Who does that anymore? And at Yankees stadium when you've been rooting for the opposing team. They're lucky they weren't sitting in the bleachers with the creatures, lol.

Oh, and next to us, were a couple of Super Fans. Those are always fun. "here you go, here you go, here you go! strike him out Two-Five, strike him out!" Hilarious. Good times.

I grew up with a father who was a HUGE baseball fan and then I married a big baseball fan...so I sort of have no choice. I grew up between San Francisco and Oakland, but the A's have always had a special place in my heart. I've been in the Philadelphia area, where we like our heartbreaker sports teams. I root for the Phillies, even when they make stupid trades. (Don't get me started about Ed Wade.) Speaking of stupid trades...I'm a closet Atlanta fan since my Johnny is there now.

I'm very disappointed in Palmeiro. I love how he used the word "intentionally" like 5 times. Yeah, whatever. I also love how Barry Bonds says he's not gonna return this season. He's probably at some rehab detoxing. The worst part is how these guys break records that legitimate players broke years ago. Real players, that actually played the game honestly and fairly. Pisses me off

I'm sure Jose Canseco is off somewhere laughing his butt off, lol.

And it sucks that these guys are role models. My older brother was a huge Palmeiro fan when we were kids. I used to love that 'stache too ;) Sucks.

Well, if your personal trainer hands you a pill and says "Take this vitamin" (wink, wink)...you can honestly say you weren't intentionally taking steroids, can't you?

One thing my DH noticed tonight...a lot of the guys who are suspected of doing steroids have been injured this year. It's just interesting to note.

Interesting isn't it? Last year Jason Giambi went through that. At first they said it was a parasite that he picked up while playing in Japan. Kevin Brown had the same problem- but he was sick right after getting back from Japan- not three months later like Giambi claims. Then it turned into cancer, then we heard nothing more. He lost a lot of weight last year too- said he stopped eating McDonalds- yeah OK. Its really amazing how all these big names are getting sick though.

I totally agree! I HATE the fact that Sosa, McGwire, Bonds and their ilk get all this attention and are heralded as great baseball players ... they juice up and hit home runs. They are NOT great baseball players! It's been so much fun to watch Ken Griffey, Jr.'s career come back as all the other big men lose the steroid bulk and dry up. Bret Boone had to quit taking steroids and, instead of hitting home runs, spent the first half of the season hitting long fly balls. Steroids made the difference for him, and these other guys as well. I HATE that they are in the record books. Griffey, on the other hand, has always been a natural athlete ... because of that, he rested on his laurels and didn't train properly. Now that he's taking care of himself, he's a great ballplayer again.

Also, Mariners pitcher Ryan Franklin has just been suspended for 10 days for failing a drug test.

I'm glad there's people like Giambi who admit to the steroids, get help, come back and still play good. Not as good as before, but still good.

I'm glad they're catching these guys. But 10 days of suspension doesn't seem like enough. FH thinks that the humiliation of it all and losing the fans respect will be the best punishment for these guys. I think I agree.

Last night, FH and I were watching the induction of Wade Boggs and Ryan Sandeburg into the Hall of Fame. Did anyone watch it? I barely recognized them! Sandeburg used to be hot, now he's bald with a flabby neck, lol :D Awesome players though. Boggs was always a fave of mine. They both seem so down to earth.

Life-Long Red Sox Fan. The love for the Sox has been passed down generations in my family. I cried like a baby last year when we beat the Yanks after being down 3 games, and then again when we FINALLY won the World Series. It was bittersweet, because I felt so sad at the thought of my Aunt & Uncle who rooted for them every year like crazy we're not with us to witness the glory. It seems silly to miss my dead relatives even more during baseball season, but I do. :o We have always had season tickets, and I grew up loving my time spent at Fenway. The Paw Soxs in RI are fun too.

I have attened games at Fenway, Shae Stadium, Yankee Stadium, Wrigley Field, Comiskey Park, and The BOB in AZ.

I love Papi, I am thrilled that Manny is staying, and I miss Pedro.

As to the steroid problems---I agree that it is a shame how this has tainted the era of baseball that I have grown-up watching. I have been a Barry Bonds fan for years, since he is my hubby's favorite player and I hate what he has allegedly done to achieve the level of greatness that he has....

I can't get over Palmeiro fo whatever reason I believed him at the hearings in March, so I am very disappointed. And now Seattle Mariners pitcher Ryan Franklin has received a 10-day suspension under the terms of Major League Baseball's steroids policy as well.

Read this on Yahoo! Sports today:

Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., a former pitcher who's in the baseball Hall of Fame, said the Senate will hold hearings this fall on legislation that would mandate two-year suspensions for any professional athlete in a team sport who tested positive for steroids.

``The hard line is for the good of the kids,'' Bunning said on ``Fox News Sunday.'' ``We don't want children, high school or college players, trying to boost their ability to make it into the major leagues.''

Not sure how I feel about that. 10 days feels like little punishment, but 2 years seems like a lot. But if it keeps players off steroids, then I guess it's just better for the sport (and all sports).

Just a thought...

If you tested positive for drugs in any other job, you'd most likely lose it. I, in fact, would probably not teach again. With that being said, 10 days is a slap on the wrist and 2 years is a punishment, in my opinion.

I’m a HUGE RED SOX fan. DH and I watch almost every game and since we moved to NC we had to purchase the MLB Extra Innings package just to get our “fix” every time they play. Think of Pete Rose- he gambled on games he managed- not ones he played in, and he was banned for life. Not even allowed to be in the Hall of Fame. What makes doing illegal drugs any better?

Most definitley!

ITA! Does anyone remember how such a big deal was made out of Roger Maris beating Babe Ruth's homerun record? They said it wasn't fair because he had a couple of more games to do it in. For years his record had an asterisk (*) next to it. Maybe they should add that asterisk to McGwire, Bonds and Sosa. On the bottom of the page it should say- Done under the influence of an illegal substance known to enhance power and strength. HA- wouldn't that be funny.

Anyway- went to another stadium over the weekend. We went the new Philadelphia Phillies stadium- Citizen's Bank Ballpark. It was beautiful. I love how they are making the new stadiums look old, but really very new. We had been there a few years ago at the Vet. It was so weird to turn the corner and see the big parking lot where the stadium once stood. They really made the area look nice. When we were last there I remember not feeling so safe there- but not anymore. Oh- yesterday was a promotion day. Fans under 14 got a batting helmet. We told the guy I was pregnant and he gave us one. It was so nice. You would never get that in NY.

I'm trying to talk DH into going to see the Washington Nationals before the summer is over. Fingers crossed!

Last year we went to a wedding in Fenway. Our friends were married on the dugout and had their reception in the 406 club.

Dens_Cinderella I went to Sunday's game also. We sat in section 143- right under the scoreboard. We only sat there one inning- it was way too muggy for this pregnant lady. Plus the lady next to me was covered head to toe in sun screen and it was getting me ill. We got to the game about an hour early. New for us- usually we find a local bar and have a few drinks before going to the game. Very rare for us to make it into the stadium before the first pitch. But I can't drink- so we just went in. We walked all over, all the levels. It was so nice. We did a little walking around after the first inning, but left the game in about the 4th or 5th inning. It was too hot for me and DH has a cold and was really worn out. I really liked it though. I'm sure we'll go back again!

Have you all seen the replays of the collision between Mike Cameron and Carlos Beltran?
Yes, it looked so awful! It is so hard to watch.

Oakland A's fan here. When I lived in the Bay Area I went to the games all the time. My company had a suite box at the A's and Giants so we could go to the games for free whenever we wanted to, I miss them! My company also had many of the players as clients so I have met quite a few of them. Nicest guy ever is Cal Ripken, he gave me free World Series tickets one year...soo cool! Now I live with no teams around me which sucks, I need my baseball!
Great thread btw....

Not much going ontoday- just sitting here watching the game. So far so good.

Another die-hard Red Sox fan here. Born and bred.

Things get pretty interesting in my house since DH is a Yankees fan. We've both taken a pretty fair amount of ribbing from our in-laws on each side. It got so bad at a family function (my side) last month when DH was teased unmercifully by about 30 of my family members that he hadn't seen since before last year's playoffs that he walked out of their house (fortunately, for him, he did come back). I did feel bad for him, but as I said to him, shouldn't dish it if you can't take it. It was amusing to him when his aunt called me in 2003 after we lost the ALCS at the ungodly hour of 5 am. It was amusing to him when I called her after game 7 last year (not at 5 am mind you) and all I got out of my mouth was "Good morning" and she said to me not to call her house again, that she was in mourning, and she slammed the phone down in my ear (for crying out loud I could have been calling to tell her DH was in the hospital or someone had died or something). Not so amusing when the table were turned. All that goes through my head was "for crying out loud it is only a game don't take it so damn seriously!"

I've learned that its best to have rational baseball discussions with DH (which I always did), I can actually get him to watch a Sox game on TV with me, and we even went to see the Sox play last month with our dads and we had Green Monster Seats (DH says he only went because of the seats) which was incredible, closest you will get to heaven...at least in Fenway! But I've learned not to mention to him how well the Red Sox are doing, how badly the Yankees may be doing, and above all, not to mention how hot I think Johnny Damon is! ;)

KD this is just what DH and I were saying. In the end it's probably going to come down to a knock down drag out fight between the Sox and Yanks in the AL and both DH and I are excited about the prospect. I guess when they do play, we'll just do what we did last year to keep the piece and watch in separate rooms of the house!

This is my favorite time of the year. We are appraoching the post season (love my Red Sox!!!) for baseball and getting ready for some Pats football. Life could not be better!!!

I was just going to comment on Millar and Schillings hair. I am not sure why Schilling did it - he already has blond hair. They definitely keep it interesting.

I am wondering what Mark Bellhorn is going to look like now that he is a dreaded Yankee. They showed him last night and he hasn't become clean-cut-All-American boy yet.

We got Sox tickets for Monday - a rain make-up game. I am so excited. Else we wouldn't have gone to a game all season.

The Sox are definitely keeping us on our toes....And 8 more days until the Pats opening day and I'll be there. I can't wait!!!!!!!

Bellefior - Boy oh boy- I thought the mix in my house was bad. I'm a Yankee fan and DH is a Met fan. But Yankee-Red Sox mix, wow. I agree what you said about not dishing it out if you can't take it. I give it real bad to Dh and his family, but I can take it back without getting PO'd. This year I went to a Yankee-Met game at Shea stadium. They kicked our butts. After the game in the parking lot people were walking by and they were all happy and cheering, then DH's friends and family would point me out as Yankee fan, and boy did I get it. I got ripped, but I laughed through it all. I deserved it all. It was just too funny. Oh, by the way- did I mention I am in love with Johnny Damon? He is just too adorable, not when he's kicking our butt though, lol.

The Yanks are starting to pick it up, hopefully it will be enough to pull through. I don't know if I can handle another Yankee-Red Sox post season though. I may have to hibernate through October. LOL

Bunny ,

DH was originally a Red Sox fan (his dad always has been, his mom is a Yankee fan) until 1986 when he turned to the "dark side". Last year I used to whistle the Imperial March theme from Star Wars during the games and it would drive him up a wall!

When we were first dating, I took him to a Red Sox-Yankee game at Fenway. I made sure I wore Red Sox attire to deflect some of the abuse which I knew was sure to come our way since he insisted dressing All-Yankee. I remember getting off the T stop and two cops jokingly asking each other "what was that smell" and then pointing to DH and saying "oh look, its a Yankees fan". He was steaming but being that they were cops he couldn't say what he wanted. I did tell the cops "hey, he's with me and I am a Sox fan so he can't be all bad, cut him some slack!" I can dish it and I can take it. Unfortunately, he has a lower tolerance than I.

I've been on a mission to turn him back to being a Sox fan. I consider the fact he set foot in Fenway this year a major accomplishment towards that end. That and the fact he will watch a Sox game with me--though he says its to give them an evil eye and not because he has undergone a miraculous conversion ;) !

I forgot to mention the fact that now that DH and I are in NC we still proudly sport our Red Sox and Pats jerseys. Typically nobody bothers us. Even when we were in the Superbowl against the Carolina Panthers we could have good fun with the "natives" down here. HOWEVER, when we cross paths with a Yankee fan down here it can still get pretty ugly no matter how far away from home we are. Just last Friday we were wearing our "gear" after attending a Durham Bulls game when a Yankee fan yelled at my husband to "Go back to Boston you Masshole!". He continued to spout off and we just tried to ignore him as we weren't looking for trouble and it was obvious this guy was. DH kept him cool and light heartedly said "See you in October". Well, needless to say this guy could dish it but seriously couldn't take it and we all ended up in a stupid brawl.

I said to DH the next day "Can't we all just get along? I'm too old for this crap." His response...probably not.

DH, the Yankee fan, was quite happy this weekend. :) I was a little less happy. :(

I think it was a testament to the pitching of both teams that the score stayed at 1-0 yesterday.

And I must say I am thrilled that Schilling appears to finally have his groove back! He was throwing lightening on Saturday. I've always liked him because I think he is a class act on and off the field. He recently sponsored a whole family affected by Katrina to come up to MA, paid for their hotel for a month and their housing for a year. Yeah, if it weren't for that "gift" (as Giambi called it) who knows how many innings the game would have gone into. I'm very thankful for Wakefield's one "mistake" (I think that's what the paper's said he called the pitch to Giambi).

Well, DH is happy about the Yanks, I'm less so :( ! I told him about 2 months back that what it was all going to boil down to was who could win more games during the last two series between the Sox and the Yanks.

I never quite felt comfortable with being at the top of the heap for most of the season and always had that nagging feeling eating at me--which comes from waiting 86 years for a World Series, I guess! While I really do want to see the Yanks in the post season, if for no other reason for a Sox-NY rematch, the thought of blowing the AL East lead and fighting off Cleveland for a Wild Card spot is not a pleasant one to contemplate.

ETA: At least DH is being good about not shoving it in my face! I think watching me squirm is enough satisfaction for him! :D

They get to do a lot of really cool things in addition to going to all the games. They also have "missions" where they can win things. They have won digital cameras, laptop computers, luxury seats at the the stadium.

DH and I went to a Yankee-Met game back in May at Shea. I kept telling him I was going to find them. He said it would never happen. Well, low and behold I did. We were walking around the stadium looking for a friend of DH who works security there. As we found him, I look over to my right and saw one of them walking back to their seats. I started yelling, "Yo- Road Trippers" They were super nice people. We took pictures with them and DH sat with them for a half inning talking about their experience. He even got on the show, we have a copy of it. It was really cool.

Anyway if you get the network a new show is on every Sunday at 7:30, but they also replay it during the week at different times. If you go to www.yesnetwork.com you can find the show through there.

I want the next 12 days to be OVER! Of course I really want the Red Sox to win...what would be the worst is to not win the AL East and then not even make the playoffs. The anxiety is way to much right now. BUt then again, it is only a game and I can't make it keep me up at night!!

Right now I need to just concentrate my sports-minded efforts on the Patriot's winning in Pittsburgh this weekend.
I'm with you all the way on this. Right now is a very stressful time for us New England fans!

Is anyone watching the Yankees vs Orioles game? During the second inning, the Orioles first baseman was injured by Bubba Crosby. Holy crap, that looked so painful!
Yeah- I saw that happen. My Lord that was terrible. I felt so bad, I was almost in tears watching it. I hope it doesn't end his career, he is so young.

The stress of the next 10 days is getting to me and it really shouldn't! We are going to the Patriots game on Sunday Oct 2, the last day of regular season baseball (unless us and the Yankees tie and then we have to go to NY to play a game) so it will be very interesting because people will probably be more interested in what's going on with baseball (if it is a game that actually means something) than with football. 2 years ago during the ALDS, the whole Patriots crowd would start cheering when something good in baseball happened and the football players were all confused about why we were cheering.

DH was watching the Sox game with me last night since he has a vested interest being a Yankees fan. We started flipping back and forth once the Apprentice started. During a flip, David Ortiz came up and he said, watch this S.O.B. tie it up! No sooner did he get that out of his mouth when Ortiz hit his HR to tie up the game! He went to bed while I watched the rest! :D

Strangely enough, I had to write a story for my nephew to send back to him at his elementary school in Florida. In my story, I had one of the characters catching a HR ball hit by Ortiz at Fenway! Maybe I should write another installment today!

I had DH quite curious when I told him I have a ritual to make sure the Sox win. I'm not telling anyone what it is, but I will share it if it does end up working!

6 months of baseball and it comes down to 3 games! I think the playoffs started early for the Sox and Yankees!

(Strangely enough, I don't remember '78 even though I was 9 at the time. My dad and my FIL-both Sox fans-remember it quite well. The only thing I remember about it was through my reading. Every time Bucky Dent went to Fenway after that, when they hung his name in the visitors locker room, they hung up "Bucky F-ing Dent" over his locker!)

Are Red Sox peeps still calling the Yankees the Evil Empire?

I started whistling the theme from Star Wars at DH, so I guess that answers your question!:D

Seriously though, I was never ever comfortable with the Sox being in 1st most of the season and kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. While I am disappointed, I'm not overly disappointed, all I care about is that we get into the playoffs. I personally would like to see anothe Sox-Yankees matchup in the ALCS.

I did however have to deal with an obnoxious phone call from DH's aunt after the game--the self proclaimed #1 NY fan. I'm not even going to get into all the why's and wherefore's but someday I will tell her--get over it and youself, it's only a game and stop taking it so friggin' seriously! I understand why people aren't Yankee fans (especially if they are from Boston) but I don't get the whole "Evil Empire" thing. I've personally met George Steinbrenner -- he's not a bad guy in the least. He's tough, strict and owns a wealthy, established team but he's a very good person especially toward children (which is kinda a big deal in my book). What's with all the "evil" talk? It just seems so... I don't know... petty? I was surprised when the Sox owner (is that who it was?) came out with that remark, especially since he too is running an amazing team.

Bellefior
10-02-2005, 10:43 AM
The whole "Evil Empire" thing is a play on the fact that NY is the "Empire State". I don't think anyone is saying that George Steinbrenner is a bad person in the least. But combine the fact that these are two teams that have historically hated each other with a passion and there is a lot of bad blood between them, you come up with the whole "evil" plus "Empire" (state) thing.

As I seem to recall, whenever we played at Yankee stadium, prior to 2004, we were taunted with all kinds of things from "1918", "86 years", "Bucky Dent", and a whole bunch of other things I can't remember off hand. I supposed one could say that is just as "petty" as calling NY "the Evil Empire", but then again there seems to be a lot of pettiness in every sport. I've learned to try not take any of it personally and to look at it for what it is in the end--a game.

PS. Just for the record the Red Sox have also been a huge supporter of children's charities as well--for years they have been one of the biggest supporters the Jimmy Fund which helps kids with cancer at the Dana Farber Institute. (George Steinbrenner also made a 10K donation to the Jimmy Fund last year on behalf of his organization which I thought was a class act.)

The speculation is that it is Foulke, but we'll probably never really know. And there is no way that it was Ortiz---he is a class act and the team leader, and he doesn't start trouble.

I could see it being Foulke - he has a lot to be bitter about right now ;)

Wow- you girls have been talking up a storm since I've been away from here. I'm loving it. You are all just too funny. I'm cracking up reading some of the comments.

As a Yankee fan I have to admit some things. I don't really like Jeter. I don't think he is that great looking- A-Rod is better looking. And while he is a very good player, I don't agree with the way he is made to be like a God. I mean, if you watch the games here in NY with the Yankees announcers maybe you understand. Everytime he makes a play they say it is unbelieveable. No matter what he does they claim it is the greatest play of all time. And when he messes up they find a way to blame someone else. Its either the other player couldn't catch his bad throw or a pebble in the dirt, or something. But when a shortstop from another team makes the same exact play that they called outstanding for him, it is just routine for them. I don't know, I guess I have just had enough. He's good, leave it at that.

My second admission- I am in love with Johnny Damon. I think he is so adorable. I love his smile. I am so hoping he comes to the Yankees next year. It was funny when the Sox came to NY a few weeks ago. Everyone was commenting on his shaved face. Even Giambi rubbed his face when Damon was at first base. They are saying he is geting ready. Just too funny.

Ok- playoffs start today! Yippee!!!!!!! I have the Cardinal game on now. They just hit a grand slam and are beating the Padres 8-0.

Here's to the playoffs!!!!!!

Would JD be willing to cut his hair for Steinbrenner? That will be interesting.

Oh, the petty things I care about...

I think that was A-Rod. I have to admit I like Jeter:o and Torre, but that is all.

I am so excited for the games to begin. I love October!
You're sooo right. Where is my head today?? I guess I just associated the fruity drink with slapping for some reason.:p

Ok, my head is truly up my a$$. I meant to say wine cooler.

Anyway, enough about that. For you Yankee fans, there has been a lot of talk on whether people feel A-Rod is a "true" Yankee or not. How do you feel about that?

This is an honest question, because I'm not up on Yankees gossip at all: Is Giambi still doing steroids? He sure looks - and sweats - like he is.

And I actually bought Johnny Damon's book (in hardcover, even) - heh.

I think he's proven himself on the field and he's a class act off, so I feel he's a Yankee now. It seems like most fans/teammates accept him as such now. But it won't be "right" until he gets a ring.

I like to think he's not because I hope the threat of testing would keep him clean. But what the heck do we know? It sounds like steroids have been such an accepted part of MLB for so long that I just don't know what to believe; will they ever really clean it up? He looks smaller than when he was definitely juicing (IMO) but he's definitely not his original smaller self. I HOPE he's not. I hope the risk is too great for him now.

A ROd is a true Yankee, of course. I wasn't thrilled when we signed him, I'll admit it now, but he is the best player in baseball, has become an all-star at a NEW position, conducts himself without scandal--what's not to like?

Oh my gosh, I totally disagree. I think Jeter is hot, and A-Rod is just too pretty for my tastes. :p And I think Jeter is such a strong leader, and a clutch player---I wish we could steal him away. And Johnny Damon had better stay put---I really believe the Sox will keep him. Although the Chicago Cubs are always talking about stealing him as well.

The first game is NOT going so well for my team.:(

Go Yankees! I am so happy they won game one. Noone was expecting them to do anything, so at least grabbing game one will prove they are in it for real.

Yeah- Damon will cut that hair to be here. No doubt. Ah- I am going to have to get bleacher seats just to be close to him. LOL

Yankees are on at 10 tonight. UGH! I am going to have to take a nap so I can watch the game. Luckily I don't work again until Saturday.

Go Red Sox and Go Yankees! I can't actually believe that I am saying that since I am a die-hard Sox fan but DH is a Yankee fan and we have two standing room tickets for Game 4 of the ALCS next Saturday at Fenway if it goes that far! So we're rooting for both to win and a rematch!

Good to see Moose pitch so well last night for the Yankees. That was a huge relief! I like our chances with Wang tonight; I like how calm and cool he stays throughout the game (Moose always looks stressed on the mound and that makes me nervous).

Don't get me wrong... I love Cano. Adore him. But does he have to make a (BIG) mistake on defense everytime he does something good at bat? Ai yai yai...

Most of the Red Sox fans are quiet here today. I guess now that they have their own special thread they're too busy for us here. ;)

I hate to say it, but I totally think Johnny Damon is out of Boston at the end of this season:

A) He's going to want an exorbitant amount of money, which he might get because he had a career year

B) The Red Sox are not going to pay him said exorbitant amount of money

C) The Yankees will need a center fielder because Bernie Williams is old and slow and retiring

D) I'm sure Steinbrenner would love to give a big F You to the Red Sox by signing Damon

I'm blaming last night's loss on the fact that the game was so late, most New Yorkers couldn't watch and cheer on the Yanks. Oh well... 1 and 1 isn't terrible. We can win 2 in the Bronx (I hope!).

Figures the one year I get my hands on ALCS tickets the Sox blow it! Strangely enough, I am not that disappointed because I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop for some time. Of course, DH is quite smug and is happily ensconced in the living room watching the Yankees game as we speak!

I have seen him without the facial hair and long hair, and he looks better that way. I don't know what it is though, but I just adore him. Hey- I guess different strokes for different folks- ya know?

GO WHITE SOX!!!!!!!!! I am so happy they won. I swear I was more into that game than the Yankee game. I can handle losing to anyone but the Red Sox or the Mets. I was a very happy girl last night- even with the Yanks losing.

Speaking of which- does anyone else think Randy Johnson was a waste this year? He certainly has not pitched for us the way he pitched against us.

Hi everyone. . new to posting here. . but wondering if there are any ASTROS fan around these parts?

I watching that game, too! Or, should we say "gameS?" They're at 2 complete games, right now!

This series is REALLY hard for me. I've been a Braves fan since I can remember, and lived in Atlanta for a while, going to a TON of their games. But, this year, I have really started pulling for the Astros. Living in Houston, it's really hard not to get into the fanfare. Plus, I was one of the few around here that didn't think they were dead before the all-star break.

I really don't know who I want to win. I've never had this problem, and it's really driving me nuts! All I know is that WHOEVER wins this series is who I want to win the WS! :)

And, Chris Burke is a cutie! I don't think I've ever seen him that up-close! ;)
