It was funny, BUT I don't think it was cool that they taught the little girl to say those things, innocent or not (assuming she was actually saying them). I definitely wouldn't want my son parroting that kind of language.
I think it was funny if they were just adding the subtitles to her babble.

04-14-2007, 07:40 PM
I'm really not a Will Ferrell fan, but the baby didn't bother me. A lot of it sounded like babble they were just subtitling as they wanted and with most of the cursing, the camera either wasn't on the baby or the baby was turned, so I think that was mostly dubbed. Really, it all could have been dubbed over video of a babbling baby. Do babies that size talk very well? She looked really young, but I'm not great at telling children's ages.
NotDesperate
04-14-2007, 08:11 PM
Yes that was Will Ferrell.
And yes babies that size are capable of speaking that "well."
I think she may have said some of those things only once and then they dubbed it in over and over.
It would be more disturbing if the child were older, IMO. She will probably continue to still say those things though but since she is so teeny, if they ignore it maybe she will stop. I defitinetly wouldn't want my kid saying those things. Except maybe for the lines, "I'm just buzzed" and "I want to get my drink on."

eh, it was kind of funny. i don't consider it wrong at all. Most parents I know (IRL, I don't know parents on here) have told me stories of their kids saying "shit!" or "dammit!" or something cause they picked it up from one parent. I think lots of kids do that. I know it's a different situation (teaching vs. picking up the words) but I don't consider it harmful to the kids.

You know, I cuss. I cuss in front of my child. It doesn't really bother me to hear foul language (although in excess, foul language loses its effectiveness and just makes the speaker sound crude and uneducated). It does bother me to intentionally teach a child foul language...it is one thing if the child hears it and picks it up, but it is another thing to say, "Say 'bitch,' sweetie. Say 'bitch.' Oh...haha! How funny, Little Mary said 'bitch.'"
I really don't think it is funny to hear little kids talking about getting their buzz on and needing four beers.
The concept of the video is kinda funny, I guess...a grown man taking crap from and being intimidated by his two year old landlord. But the execution of the concept is lacking.

I thought it was cute but not really "funny".

I thought it was pretty humorous.
Sometimes kids say things that sound like other words. For instance, when my DD say "sit" or "sip" it comes out sounding exactly like "shit". I really had to take pause the first time I heard her say it and then realized she was looking at a chair. In fact, the daycare pulled me aside at pickup the other day and asked me about it. I asked what was going on at the time and they were having snack. Turns out she was saying "sip" and just wanted more water. Not saying that's the case of this toddler here, but...
I thought it was pretty funny.
On a side note, a friend's son pronouces the word "cracker" as "f*cker". He told me the other day that he was going to tell his son to call his mom an animal cracker as a joke. I thought that was pretty funny too. I guess I am crude. :)

LOL! Our friends daughter pronounced cracker the same way when she was younger. It was a crack up!

However, I don't think the kid was necessarily saying all that. There wer several key times when she wasn't on camera. Also, at the end she said, "come mommy." Mommy was nearby, but off cameral. I think she was helping the baby out.
Still pretty freaking hilarious.

There's another article at Wired (http://www.wired.com/entertainment/theweb/news/2007/04/landlordmckay) about this movie and its internet success.
Personally, I found it funny. But I totally get why some people didn't - for example, I thought Borat was stupid while my entire social circle think it's the movie of the year. There's no predicting what's going to make me laugh. I'm a huge Will Ferrell fan though, so that might have had something to do with it. ;)

I didn't think it was that funny. I thought that it was funny when Will Ferrell initially opened the door and you saw this little girl after expecting someone totally different; but I don't find much humor in foul mouthing. I find things much funnier if they're just FUNNY, not using bad language or "bathroom humor".
Even though the article on the People site states that her father said that she hasn't used the language since the filming, I don't think I believe that. I'm sure she was applauded for saying what they told her to say, and we all know that kids will do nearly anything to keep getting that approval. I'm 99.9% sure that she's said some of those things several times since the filming... just not in the correct context. Not my kid, so I don't have to worry about it; but... to me, it wouldn't be worth it to teach my child to say those things for the sake of a few cheap laughs. But that's just me.
I don't think it was funny at all. I can't believe someone would ever have their kid in a clip where they used such bad language.

This is possible. My friend's daughter used to say "dump truck" as "dumb f*uck"! We almost fell over laughing when she did that. BUT she thought she was saying truck, so it wasn't so permanent. She did, however, spend the rest of the day running around saying "dumb f*ck" over and over.

I thought it was cute & funny. It is a little strange to hear a baby swear, but I really don't think it is a big deal. My parents have tapes of me swearing as a baby. They thought is was hilarious to try and get me to say "F*ck" and "Bitch"......now at almost 30 years old, I turned out ok and hardly swear at all! :)

Here's a follow-up story on someone who was "copy-catting" the Will Ferrell video.

Here's another one... (http://www.wavy.com/Global/story.asp?S=7509491&nav=menu45_2_10)
I didn't think the Will Ferrell thing was funny, and here's just another reason why!! Unfortunately, I know the family involved. It's a horrible situation, and the parents of that poor child (who wasn't smoking, the cigarette wasn't lit, but that doesn't make it any better) are more dysfunctional than anyone could imagine (and it hasn't come out on the news yet). But, that they were compelled to do this to their baby to be funny because of the Will Ferrell video is just as misguided as I think the original video was.

I just completely disagree.
First- I think it absolutely does make a difference whether the cigarette is lit or not. If it's lit, the kid is definitely getting second hand smoke, and has the possibility of getting burnt.
Second- this thing versus Will Ferrell's is very different because there were no cigarettes whatsoever in his. There was no concern about the kid accidentally swallowing the cigarette or being influenced at all by it.
Finally- they weren't "compelled" to do this because of the Will Ferrell video. They were compelled by their stupidity. If they didn't copy the Will Ferrell video, than they probably would've been videotaping their baby taking crotchshots at the dad with a baseball bat to send in to America's Funniest Home Videos. (Which is a heck of a lot worse precedent to set IMO.)

Um, okay, you're right... let's all get our two year old kids to use profanity and talk about "getting their drink on", just don't let them touch that cigarette and it's all good!
My point is... these people ARE stupid. There are hundreds of thousands of stupid people out there who will do or have done the same thing they have. You get something that everyone laughs at (like the Will Ferrell video) and people want to emulate it to "be cool" just like him. They just took it one step farther and gave her the "white trash cigarette" to make it "funnier" in their opinion.
I was just waiting for a story like this to come out... and am just horrified that it happened in a family that I know. (I know the sister of the father of the child.)

But the problem isn't with the video, it's with the people who are stupid. It's like suing Oliver Stone because Natural Born Killers "made" two delinquent teenagers kill people. Movies don't "make" people do anything.
I think one of the biggest problems we have in our society is our inability to take responsibility for our own actions and to appropriately place responsibility on others. People can't do something because they are just stupid, they have to have done it because a video, or a song, or whatever "made" them do it. No, they are human beings, they have brains and they have free will. The blame needs to be placed on them, not on some third party that had no ability to compel their actions whatsoever.

Funny, although I wasn't PMPing...the "get my drink on" line was definitely the best part.
So far, Annika hasn't imitated any of the bad language that I'm trying to curb, although I'm sure it's coming. She does have an amusing habit of making all words that end in a K-sound start with a K-sound. Milk, for example, sounds more like kick or cook. You can imagine what rock sounds like.
And yeah, idiots are always going to find idiotic things to do. If the Will Ferrell video hadn't been their inspiration, it would've been something else.

I also agree that if it wasn't Will Ferrell, it would have been something else. However, I think that having someone like Will Ferrell doing a video like he did with a child, and getting such a positive reaction for doing so, that it was just a matter of time before someone else did something similar as a take-off of it and get into trouble doing it.
There are LOTS of folks who think their kids are extremely funny for doing things or saying things when they're little that they'd punish them for doing when they were older. Why is it funny or cute to teach them to do these things when they're little?
When my nephew was little and my SIL was teaching him to say "Please" when he was asking for something, my brother taught my nephew to say "Now". So, my nephew would ask for something, and SIL would ask "what do you say?" and he started to answer "now" instead of "please". I thought that was horrible, but my brother thought it was hilarious! Of course, it took several MONTHS to break my nephew of that habit, and how was he supposed to understand why he was now being taught that it was not funny when he was getting so much positive reinforcement before?
That's my issue! People do these things to their kids because of all the positive feedback. Look at all the positive feedback there was HERE for that video!! I'm sure there were several folks who laughed at what my brother taught my nephew. But, when you really think about it, it's not fair to the kids. So, for a little humour for the adults, let's screw with the kids. We'll deal with the aftermath later.
