View Full Version : Toaster Oven?? Recipies?

So I cleaned out some things from my parents house, which included several appliances that we didn't have room for in my old rental.
One of those things was a toaster oven. DH thinks it's great, because we can use it in the summer for quick things instead of heating the whole oven up.
But other than that, I don't really see an advantage???! It takes just as long to heat up and cook things as a regular oven. And we have central air/air conditioning, so even that really isn't an "advantage" of that much significance. He wants to keep it, but I want to sell it on a garage sale.
So, can anyone give me a recipie or two that only works with a toaster oven?
Thanks!

we use ours All.the.time. It takes less energy than heating up the whole big oven. I have the size that heats a 12" pizza so it will fit a 9x9 pan as well. Any casserole you can make in a 9x13 you can half into a 8x8 or 9x9. I make lots of baked pasta, tater tot hotdish etc in ours. I cook chicken breasts, pork chops etc. I also use it when two things need to bake at different temps like fries and chicken patties or something and cook one in the toaster oven and one in the big oven.

I just bought one for the reasons hmbay mentioned - mainly b/c we halve a lot of recipes and it's so silly to heat up my entire giant oven to do a pizza or something.
That said, though, it may depend on what model and size you have b/c they've changed a lot. I have a Black and Decker and it just doesn't work well for baking, so I traded up for an Oster (has great consumer reviews for the price). The B&D is going in a garage sale. :D
I'd say test it out on some things over the weekend (baked casserole, pizza, maybe cookies) see how it performs, and decide what to do with it.

I use my toaster oven to make cookies from those cookie dough tubs people sell for fundraisers. That way I can make just a couple at a time and it takes only about 5 min opposed to 12 min in the big oven.

Thanks, I'll just test a few things out this weekend!
We have a toaster oven and use it all the time as well for everything we'd use a full size oven for - broiling, baking, making toast ;)
Then again, we can't use our oven from around late April to late October (it sets off the smoke detector and heats up our non-central-AC apartment WAY too). So we'd be lost without it. I do think that in our case we could benefit from a slightly larger sized oven that would hold a small casserole dish.

In case anyone is in the market, I am really impressed with my Oster toaster oven (http://www.constantchatter.com/shop/B000ASG3G2/Oster_Brushed_Stainless_Steel_Convection_Toaster_O ven.html). It bakes just as well as my full size oven does. I think it's a great value and we will be using it a ton.

I have this one. It's works great and it's big inside; it fits 6 slices of bread.

When we were renovating last summer we ONLY had a toaster oven and Microwave.
I did an entire roast chicken in it one night!

I think it's the best chicken I ever cooked!
I have also done cookies (if you buy dough, you can make say 4 for dessert without heating the entire oven. Chicken strips, fries etc for 1 or 2
DEFINALTY uses less energy, OR if you are making a larger dinner can be used to do something like garlic bread or busicuits while the main oven is in use.

Our toaster oven heats up so much faster than our oven. We use ours practically daily.

Awwww, crap. There goes my diet. :p It never occurred to me I could bake "single-serve" cookies in my toaster oven. Dammit!
I didn't realize they came in larger sizes though - mine seems quite small. I haven't used it in ages - it just sits on the counter. :(

LOL, it's bad for WW. You should be glad you have a small one :p
I've taken to making fresh mini-loaves (we like seperate shapes of bread, otherwise a loaf pan will fit just fine) of bread on fri/sat nights. Bad, bad, bad...

I have a tiny one that sits on the counter and hasn't been used in at least a year. I used to make pizza bagels in it. I also used it to broil the pizza burgers. Are you seeing the pizza theme? I think I might have to sell mine at a garage sale.
