My son has had a diaper rash for about two weeks on his bottom only. The skin is red over a large area and rough/dry in patches but not thick or anything. He has also been teething for 2 weeks. Could it be due to that? I know it's not a food or contact allergy rash but it could be due to moisture I guess. Some of the dryness is now up almost to the hip area (top or buttocks). Any ideas?

every.single.time my youngest DD was teething, she would get a horrible diaper rash. I found that the original Desitin (not the new creamy one) worked best.

Same thing happens to my niece. My sister said the only way that she can help it is with the super thick zinc cream like Triple Paste (I found it at Target).

DD has been having one that is on/off. I'm not sure if it's related to teething (though I am expecting some new teeth to come out based on her behavior).

DD has always had a rash that accompanies teething. So do her cousins. I swear by Aquaphor for creating a barrier to the wetness.

Mia also got a mild diaper rash with her first tooth. It came about 1.5 weeks before we even SAW a tooth, though. She did, also, get a yeast infection which we couldn't treat with diaper cream. We went to the ped and he said it was a yeast infection. If it doesn't go away soon, see the ped. That was Mia's only two times with anything like diaper rash.

Diaper rash that typically lasts that long suggests it's fungus to me, and so you might want to try out some antifungal cream.

My DD used to get terrible diaper rashes. We finally had the doctor prescribe Nystatin cream. We used that first, then put a layer of desitin over it, and then a layer of A&D ointment. I call it the triple threat because it scares rashes away so quickly! The Nystatin is an Rx, but it is super cheap (3 dollars a tube, no insurance) and it works much better than the OTC yeast creams. I still use it on her and it is the only thing that clears up her rashes.

Yeast or fungus? Ewww! He's going to the doctor as soon as they can get him in. I showed my friend today and she said she would take him to the Dr. just because to her it looked different than typical diaper rash and has lasted so long. It clears up a little and then comes back. She thought airing him out more and changing him more frequently would help but said she would get it looked at anyway. Thanks for the advice ladies.

that's a classic fungal rash..clears up a little, keeps coming back. My DD got a really nasty one, and after one application of anti fungal cream it totally cleared up

Is it OTC? And if so, what is it called?

PinkConverse - We used Lotrimin (OTC) for our DD's first yeast infection rash but it took several days to heal. With her second rash we got a prescription and we saw a difference in a day or two. For her though, the pain subsided almost immediately. I think the prescription was for Nystatin (or something like that).

Our yeast infections have had clear borders with little satellite spots surrounding it. It is also red and raised more than a typically diaper rash. I was told that they were caused by yeast in the intestines causing an infection in the skin. They look horrible if you let them go (like we did). Also, petroleum jelly based creams are the worst for them.

Thanks for all of the advice ladies. I took him to the Dr. today and get this...it's BUTT ECZEMA! Yep, it's just eczema! I noticed he had some of the same on his arms and legs today and when the nurse asked me what the rash the looked like I told her it looked like his arms and legs, only with redness and that is looked like eczema to me but I was told 2 mo. ago when I brought him in he did NOT have eczema, just dry skin  The Dr. came in and looked at it all and informed me it was indeed eczema. I got an expensive prescription for a once daily lotion called Cutivate and was told to put Aquaphor or Vaseline on it as well to create a moisture barrier. As far as it clearing and coming back she said the A&D was probably creating a moisture barrier and helping it. Thanks again for the advice.

I swear nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to my DD. Kids seem to have the weirdest conditions! I thought I would mention that sometimes eczema can be caused by an allergy to something, so you that might be something for you to consider, in case it keeps coming back.
