thanks for the new digs! very nice...

I MUST invest in the "Love and Logic" book. Thank you for sharing! Dh and I are pulling our hair out with him lately!!! I am glad to know that we're not alone though...:) It's days like today, that I just don't understand. We were out shopping, lunch, etc. all day and he was perfect. We get home and he was a maniac all.evening.! They're just so unpredictable!

Feel better, asher!!!

I'm looking on Amazon and see 2. There's the Parenting with Love and Logic and the Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood. Does anyone recommend one over the other? Also, what was the other book someone recommended? It was something about discipline, I think.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. I'll be back later to post pictures from birthday and disney world, Rebecca is hungry right now.

Tgray: The other book is Positive Discipline: The First Three Years. I bought it on Cynder's rec and liked it very much.

ETA: We had that matching game he played last night since Christmas, and last night was the first time he had an extended attention span for it and was interested in doing it correctly.

Of course all of this love and logic talk and this morning he has a meltdown for the ages. It took us 10 minutes to get him changed and dressed for school, he cried for daddy the entire way to school and then wouldn't let me leave school. Not loving that!

Have a good day everyone and feel better Asher!

Trip Recap -Rebecca had a blast meeting all of the charactures at Disney World. She was not afraid of any of them and actually tried to cut the line a few times to go give them a hug and kiss. Luckily, we were able to persuade her to wait her turn! Her first ride was the flying magic carpets in Animal Kingdom. During the first wait, she tried to slip through the ropes to get to the front, but we explained to her that other children were there first and wanted to ride it also. She understood after the first ride, which surprised us. Here are a few pictures from our Disney Trip:

Wow, a new thread! I have been reading along but have not been good about SO.

Actually I think I was trying to stay away from all the sickness because we were well last week, until Fri. night! DD has another EI and it started with a virus that she has been nice enough to pass along to me, during my Passover break from work! Lovely!

Happy Belated Birthday to Rebecca!

Hope Asher gets better quickly!

I too am in denial that my little one is turning two! I have the date booked, but no theme! That is my goal for tomorrow night! Come up with a theme!

I may need to find some of those books! Sarah is really pretty good, but I have a hard time when I am PMS'ing with her behavior. Pretty much I can be creative with discipline and the only times she is out of control are when she does not feel good or if she is not getting her way! I feel I have it pretty lucky with here, I may be screaming for help after that statement in a couple of weeks though!

Poor Asher! That bug seems to be making its way around the country. A few kids in dc have it right now as well. Hope he feels better. :)

Chy,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, REBECCA!! Love the pics!! I can't believe how outgoing Rebecca was with the characters. Caroline would be terrified, even with as much as she loves the Disney crew. I think we'll have to wait another year or two to make that trip. Great job on the cake!! It looks gorgeous! Did you figure out a way to get the angel food cake to work for you?

For some reason, Caroline's birth stats never made it to the front page. It should read 6 pounds, 13 ounces & 20.5 inches long.

Cynder: Didn't mean to ignore your post with question in the old thread. The car seat thing is called GoGo Kidz and it's found at GoGoBabyz.com (or on eBay, where I found mine). It is basically like a luggage cart for your stroller. It has two "feet" that fit up in the seat (works only on certain seats like Britax, FisherPrice, Graco, etc. so check your seat brand with their compatable list before you go much further) and a bar that slides into the back of the seat. You screw the footed platform onto the bar and viola -- car seat on wheels. It's the same principle as the Sit'nStroll seat but you don't have to buy a new seat. It's FAA approved to leave attached in flight but you must remove it before installing the seat into a car. I love having DS in his own seat on a plane -- so much easier for everyone -- and this allows us to just roll him in the seat around the airport. No lugging seat, no lugging kiddo (although by the time we got home he was so tired of sitting he walked the entire length of the ATL airport and out to the car!). I didn't get a pic of DS in his seat w/attachment, but there are pics on the gogobabyz.com site so you can see it in action. The price tag on the thing is high for what it is (hence my trip to eBay) but after using it, I think it's worth it. It was recommended to me by another mom on the boards who swears by it. (wow, that was a long answer to your question :) )

Chylynn: Adorable pics! Thanks for sharing.

Happy birthday to Rebecca!

Oh, man, what a Passover! We were at my parents' house two hours away on Monday night, and during the seder Asher had diarrhea all over the highchair. He had it in his sleep all night long on Monday night, and DH and I had to keep waking him to change his diaper. Last night at DH's aunt's house wasn't much better, and late last night DH started throwing up, and I threw up this morning. So we all have it now. Asher's still having diarrhea, though, and he's really lethargic. Luckily, he's nursing a lot, so I don't think he'll dehydrate. DH and I are a different story. I think I have to go to the store and buy popsicles and juice.

Worst part is that since he was sick at two family dinners, our relatives are getting sick now, too. My mom called this morning to tell me that my 83-year-old grandfather, who kept carrying Asher around and playing with him, is really sick today. We suspect that my grandmother will get it, too, and DH's parents should have it tomorrow. What a mess!!

(alienhost, I was thinking of you and your DD when this started. Hope you and Kat are better now.)

Thanks for the new thread!!!

It's been a while since I posted here, but I have been reading along almost daily. It's been such a hectic week, and the terrible two have been present in full force since Monday. :( Here's how the days have been going:
Combing Hair: DD screaming "don't like comb" through it
Play time: DD kicking the furniture, me disciplining, DD kicking, etc., etc.
Lunch time: throwing her food on the floor, throwing a fit because I take it away
Nap time: Screaming through the entire routine
Evening: More tantrums, hitting me, kicking furniture, tearing up toys, etc.

Dinner time has been pretty good and so has bedtime. I think the reason for all this acting out is that DH has been putting in 12 hour days (between campaign & work) and is rarely home during her wake period. This cycle has made for one tired mommy! :(

Yesterday, I checked out Setting Limits With Your Strong-Willed Child by Robert J. MacKenzie. I wanted to see if they had The Strong-Willed Child by Dr. James Dobson, but DD chose that moment to throw a major tantrum. :( I've got it on my list to read though, along with the ones posted earlier in this thread. Thank you tgray for the recommendations!

Dreshny~Feel better all of you!

Happy Birthday, Rebecca!! You're party looked like a lot of fun!!

Chylynn -Happy birthday, Rebecca! Love all the pics!

Dreshny - Oh no, how terrible that your entire family is now sick! I hope everyone gets better quickly.

We had our meltdown last night. She had a fit at dinner, then I realize she is running a fever. She was also constipated. Some Motrin and Sesame Street seemed to help. By bathtime, she was perfectly fine. Constipation can't cause a fever, can it? She's getting a new tooth, so I am more likely to suspect that as the cause of the fever. She had no fever this morning. But she does seem to get constipated like once a week. Umm, all I know are foods that cause constipation, not some that don't, can anyone give me some ideas? I'm not sure why she is getting constipated so much; we don't do bananas or applesauce every day, but we do a fair amount of cheese.

Mods - Can you please change DH's age to 36....he's really old. ;)

Heather thanks for putting up the new thread!

Dreshny I hope you and your whole family feels better soon. Thanks for asking, DD and I are finally better. We also passed it on to both my parents :( I feel your pain, it's such a nasty virus. Hopefully the really bad part passes for you in 24 hours or so.

Stomach Bug Tips
1) Get some "underpads" they are flat thin pads sold at the drugstore in the incontience aisle. I get the Xtra Large and use them as a disposable changing pad during those super nasty/messy changes. That way you can just bundle everything up and toss.
2) Keep a trash bag near by to toss everything into.
3) Use latex gloves (thanks Sasha). Although I caught it I think it was b/c she vomitted on me.
4) Lay some large bath/beach towels in the bed/crib so if they soil the bed you can just remove those rather than changing the entire bed.
5) I kept the washing machine filled with some water and soap and tossed the soiled stuff in right away and let it soak a bit and then ran it when we had a few things (on hot).

Chylynn thanks for sharing your pictures, it looks like Disney and the party were a blast!

Christy I hope you feel better soon!

Constipation you might want to try to give her more fiber or water. Dairy can cause constipation, I believe. There's always prunes and I find grapes help DD. I think I read in another thread that flaxseed can help but I don't know much about it (they do have waffles with flaxseed). Sasha I hope she feels better soon.

ally I hope A feels better soon.

OK, I'm finally caught up, more or less:

ranchers I'm sorry to hear about the trying times and the bite. I hope things go better for you guys.

ahavnes I hope the pink eye and cold are better

kim wow 2 weeks! So exciting!

psusna I'm glad the trip went well, even if your DH was a poop. That picture is adorable. Wecome back!

trying toddler times I'm so sorry everyone is dealing with this. We have our share too. I have to read that thread psusna posted.

cookbook diedra that sounds interesting. IIRC, some magaizne I received recently had some similar recipes, you make a mixture and add it to sauces and baked goods. I'll try to find it.

fun stuff since everyone has so many terrible 2 stories, I thought I'd post a fun thing that has been going on here. Now if I ask DD if she wants something or to do something she replies "Okay" in this sweet voice. So last night DH asked her is she wanted to "put the puzzles away" and her reply was "okay dada". AND she put them away. Dare I say we might be making progress on "clean up time?" Then this morning she threw a fit about getting her diaper changed - oh well take what you can get!

Wow! Nice to see that we're all having $hitty (some in the literal terms!) week, with our "trying toddlers". Landon has been testing me since he woke up and it's only 8:40 a.m., I'm in for a long day. Of course, I have a million things to do...fold laundry and put it away, grocery shopping (first time with both babes, am I crazy????), and having friends out for dinner...I AM nuts! All the while, Landon goes from happily playing to complete meltdown mode in seconds, it's like someone hits a switch on him all of a sudden if something doesn't go just the way he "needs" it to! I do take great comfort knowing we're all there together! tgr, your days sound a lot like ours lately!

dreshny: Oh, gosh, I hope you ALL feel better very soon. No fun. :(

sasha: Poor Sarah! :(

Ok...better go try and get some of this stuff done while my child is content (Landon that is! ;))

Sarah has been having the meltdowns that I did not wish for today! At breakfast she threw food, I told her "no" and she started crying!

Just about 15 minutes ago she pushed over a hallogen lamp that crashed into another lamp, which fell, nicking a peice out of a wood table, breaking two lightbulbs, and breaking the lamp shade. I think she scared herself, but any idea when these kids learning the meaning of "no" or "stop"? I tried to get to her before she knocked over the Hallogen, but could not get to her quickly enough!

psusna Thanks for the feedback. We're about to travel a bunch and I am still not sure what we will do. I almost want him to walk around to get energy out before a flight. This price is what is stopping me.

Trgray Most of the Love and Logic stuff, I have gleaned off message boards. I do have the Positive Discipline 1-3 years book. Lot of it is common sense. None of them have the "Aha! That's how to fix it" moment but a lot of it made me take a step back and look at how I present myself to DS. I am also reading "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk" which also follows the positive discipline school of thought. It's for older kids but it teaches how to communicate and be more empathetic to communicate with children. The key overall is to be consistent which I am not esp after a long day of work.

I have a few single friends who are parents and they always blow my socks off. I can't imagine how hard it is for you but hang in there. Aidan is a sweet girl at heart. This is just a phase.

Dealing with Tantrums So I tired the "fun and sweet" method yesterday and today. We don't really have a good room to use so I wasn't able to enact that part. I got down on his level and said "Blackberries can only be eaten in highchair". Tantrum and crying ensued. "So I repeated "Blackberries, highchair or nothing. Okay you want nothing. That's fine. You feel sad and angry. You do it here but I will be right here if you need me." He cried for a few minutes and then came over and climbed into the highchair.

Good grief! I am going to have white hairs by the time this is all done.

Good heavens! I need to get to the bookstore and read up rather than just complaining about Abbey's behavior! :cool: You all have given me some good recs, thanks! :)

Sasha- Abbey runs temps sometimes for no discernable reason and my mom said I did too as a child. Maybe she was just fighting something off--successfully! :) As for constipation, I usually mix a cup of Stage 1 prunes in with a little yogurt for Abs and she eats it right up. Or you could try prune-apple juice (Gerber makes it in the baby aisle), but Abbey refuses that, so I am sure Sarah will too. ;)

Tara- Seriously, hats off to you for handling everything while Ryan is deployed. You have my utmost admiration, and I mean that! :)

Christy- Sorry about the rough morning!

Do you think it's time to potty train Landon??? ;)

So, this is SO only a story I'd share with you girlees. But, let me just tell you what's been going on for the last 15 mins. around here.

We're getting ready to leave for the grocery store and I was putting Reece in his car seat. Landon comes running to me with his pants off, while pulling his diaper off saying "peepee, peepee" I run over to him, and take him straight to the toilet, he goes I cheer and tell him, "now go p/u your diaper off the floor where we left it." I go to finish strapping Reece in and in the mean time, Landon gets side tracked (surprise!:rolleyes: ) I go get the diaper and I can hear him in my room saying "toot" I said "Do you need to go poopoo" he said no, Reece starts screaming, I go get his carseat and bring him into the room with us, while I wrestle Landon back into his clothes...Come back into the room and find Landon grunting by his elmo work bench, I said, "oh, lets go poop" I pick him up and next thing I know, there is a terd stuck to my freshly pedicured big toe! NIIIIICCCE!:cool: What a fiasco....all the while, Reece is screaming his head off, I've got $hit on my foot and Landon's just proud as punch that he pooped! Good times...Needless to say, we still haven't made it to the store, and I'm still in a sweat from the recent events!:rolleyes:

Thanks for the new thread!! I can't believe I'm so behind already. :rolleyes:

Roseanne- Oh no!! I am so sorry that your whole family is ill- I hope they all feel better soon (and you too!).

tgray- I start to get the antsies if DH is an hour late from work. I can't imagine what it's like for you without Ryan- you are such a strong lady.

Happy Belated Birthday to Rebecca!! The party and the trip to Disney World sounded great!

rancherswife- OMG; I am so sorry but I had to laugh. Eek!! James had an accident of that nature on our kitchen floor last week, but you had it much worse!!

psusna- What is it about DHs and trips? I swear during our visit to GA, I wanted to tell my DH to just go home. You would think he was the 2 year old. :mad:

I hope all the sick guys and gals feel better ASAP!!!

Tantrums/Misbehavior/Discipline- James is such a good little guy that I really shouldn't complain. The main issues we have are with diaper changes and listening. It's like he has a mental block on the words "no" and "stop". And he's been really bad about hitting when he doesn't get his own way. But I tend to forget all of the negative stuff because he is so very affectionate lately. Kisses, hugs, and hair petting all over the place.
I'm a big fan of the empathy approach and I try to always get on his level and get across that I know how he's feeling. But my biggest problems are yelling and lecturing- especially when he does something that puts himself in danger.

Pretend- DS likes to pretend that he's a cat or a dog although we don't even have either one. Today he was crawling on the floor rubbing himself on my legs and meowing. :D

Second Birthday Party- Well, we're flying in the face of convention and having ours on a Thursday, his actual b-day. His godfather will be out of town that weekend and we want to make sure he can be there, especially since his youngest son was born on the same day as James (a few hours earlier). I was going to just invite family and closest friends, but then I found out that several ladies in my playgroup are inviting James to their kids' parties so we'll be adding about 5 to the list. Should still be a pretty small affair. We're doing a Cars theme.

Wow, a new thread!

Happy 2nd Birthday, Rebecca!! Looks like the Disney trip was a major hit. We want to take Sarah (and Alex too) to Disney.

Roseanne ~ Sorry to hear Asher is sick. Hope he's feeling better soon. Sorry to hear that you all are sick now. Hope everyone is feeling better soon.

Naamah ~ Sorry for the rough times. I can completely understand because Sarah can act like that as well. She does it more when DH is gone a lot due to work and other things.

Sasha ~ Sarah will have fevers when she's teething. She is also rather warm most of the time but does not have a fever.

Alien ~ Those are wonderful tips. I'm going to write them down so I remember when we need them (again). I could have used them in early March. Maybe it would have saved me (my mom and then DH's grandma) from getting so sick.

ally ~ Hope Aiden is feeling better soon.

Christy ~ I'm not sure when they learn the meaning of no or stop. Sometimes Sarah will understand no/stop and other times she doesn't. Hopefully it's soon.

ranchers ~ Sorry for your morning. Most we've gotten Sarah to do is sit on the toilet fully clothed. I'm starting to use pullups during the day and diapers at night. I was hoping that her other i-teeth would be in before starting potty training (I don't want to go through another 2 wks like I did in early March with pants. I seriously doubt it would work and I'd be needing serious help myself.). that doesn't seem to be the case so hopefully it won't be as bad with the other side. Heck, maybe they are in and I just can't tell (she isn't too fond of opening her mouth wide enough for us to see in).

Tantrums ~ We are dealing with them as well. Some days are better than others. Overall it's pretty good though.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2 month WBV ~ We took A to have his 2 month WBV. He's 9lbs, 12oz and 22 3/4 inches. So he's gained a little over 2 lbs in 2.5 months. He's in the 10th percentile for all his measurements. Ped told us not to worry about it. He gave us a script for a reflux med to see if it helps with his spitting up. We go back in a couple of weeks to see if it's better. If not we try another med. He is also making noises (sort of like a gasping for air sound) when he breathes. Freaks us out and they want to see if that gets better with the meds as well.
Last night was a fun one. Got a call that they thought dad had "broken his eardrum." Okay, there's only a few ways that can be done and I doubt that laying in bed can do it. So they take him (by ambulance no less) to the ER. (They are all of 4 blocks from the hospital.) No one went with him from the nursing home. (big surprise) We know the ER doc who is in the room with him. She said it wasn't as bad as they said it was (and definitely didn't need to come by EMS) but they were "freaking out" when they called. He had scratched the skin in his ear canal and that is what caused the bleeding. It was already clotted so it didn't just "pour of his ear" as they said when they called. Mom told them what the nurse told her when she called they just laughed. They told her that "meat was coming out." :confused: Then it took them 30 plus minutes to come get him. (Of course once they got there we figured out why. They called someone in to go get him. Not exactly sure why they couldn't spare two people to come get him. They'd be gone maybe 15 minutes tops and it was 11/11:30 at night so everyone was in bed. Not like in the daytime when it would have been a little harder to spare a few people. But there is another location directly across the street that could have helped if need be.)
tgr68
Ally~Hope Aiden is feeling better soon!
Ranchers~LOL!!!! It sounds to me like he is ready!
Meri~Ugh! What drama with your dad!?! I'm assuming everything is okay now since it was just a scratch. :) I hope the meds work for little A. :)
After I posted this morning, DD had another meltdown. I put her in timeout (which involves being forced to sit on mommy's lap until she calms down). Once she was ready to get up, she looked at me and said "I'm sorry". :o Awww! I gave her big hugs and told her that I forgave her. Then we read a couple of books and got lunch before I put her down for a nap.
Other than a quasi-major hitch on Sunday, potty training here is going rather well! She peed on the potty once this morning and asked to go a couple of other times (where she merely farted while sitting on the toilet). When I put her down for a nap, she still had dry underwear!!!! Yay! :D
Speaking of DD, I think I hear her waking up.
Congrats to Wendstress and welcome Alex!
Sorry I've been MIA everyone. We were in Florida for a week visiting with my parents. The great news is that it appears that we've kicked the pacifier habit! On Monday afternoon, Brody bit a chunk out of his pacifier, so we tossed it. We hadn't brought extras, so we went to CVS to get a replacement (he only used it for sleep times). We got a similar one (but the bulb was a different material/texture) and he was uninterested. So he went 2 nights and 2 naps without a pacifier. When we got back to the house last night, we presented him with one of the original pacifiers, but he was uninterested in that one either!
Kellie,
You're so lucky. I don't thinking ditching the paci will be as easy for us. Caroline will take anything. In fact, a few weeks ago we couldn't find her regular ones so gave her one of her newborn pacis instead. It didn't phase her in the least. Within the past month she's learned how to say "I want paci". I really wish we had nipped it in the bud before we got to this point.
paci's ~ we're gonna be with them for a while too... but nic only gets one for sleeping...
in other news... for the FIRST time EVER... nic actually sttn tues night!!! WOOHOO!!! of course, last night was pretty rough, but were making progress!!
ranchers ~ good luck at the market... we just got back. it wasnt too bad (of course, the non-perishables are in the car til dh gets home) ... i slung joey - he slept the entire time and nic rode in the cart as usual... took longer than it usually does, but we were out of just about everything too, so... lmao at landon's potty story (sorry) :)
love all the pics of rebecca's bday... jealous that you could plan a princess party too!
love the love and logic discussion... gotta order the book, but for now were just using it for mealtime food throwing and i dont know if its a coincidence or not, but dinner went pretty well last night!
psusna,
We're trying to limit them as much as possible. We've cut it back to naptime, bedtime, and public meltdowns. I'll probably keep it this way until around her second birthday at which time I'll just tell her that they're gone. "Best laid plans of mice and men..."
Happy,
How terrifying! And all this time I thought it was more for dental reasons. Fortunately, it's not something we do regularly. It was just the one time when DH and I both forgot to grab one and discovered one in the pit of her diaper bag. First time ever sttn?! Holy crap, you deserve a HUGE congratulations!!
Naamah ~ Thanks. Mom said that he was really sleepy yesterday so she didn't know if it was related. The staff wasn't concerned. Mom said he had a lot of blood in his ear when they were there.
Pacifiers ~ Nope. DD never took one when she was baby. When I got them out before DS was born she did put it in her mouth. That was the first and last time she's done that. DS does take one sometimes (has to be in the right mood for it). DD will bring it to him whenever he is crying and put it in his mouth (sometimes he takes it and sometimes he doesn't).
So, what are some good things you've found that keep your kid occupied by themselves for a significant period of time? ANything? Besides the tv? Nic has watched SOOO much more tv than I would like.. between me being a hurting whale at the end of my pg, and now that I have to multitask two... I am ashamed to admit he probably watches 3+ hours a day... BUT, if the tv is not on and I try to nurse Joe ... Nic wants to sit on my lap and is very loud about it (just no room...he can be bribed to sit NEXT to me if the tv is on, but otherwise he wants up accompanied by loud whiny grunting...) Anyone find anything a toddler can do independently for a good chunk of time?
DisneyGirl
independent play I usually give Nikki a big ol' coloring book and some earasable twistable crayons and she seems to do ok for long period of time. I also went out a bought a big ball and she kicks it arounf the house for a good amount of time. I also bought some brislte blocks that she seems to play well with also.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday and weekend.
happy: ha! At 5.5 weeks I'm still trying to figure out how to keep Landon occupied doing stuff while I nurse Reece, I wish he would watch 10 minutes of a damn tv show, he has no interest. It would make life easier on me when I'm trying to sit, keep it somewhat quiet and nurse Reece. It's just chaos during that time, I usually have to put Reece down at least once during the feeding to go grab Landon from doing a naughty, or he's right there up in Reece's kool-aid the entire time...Thank goodness Reece is so easy going about it all. ;) If you figure anything out...please fill me in...in the mean time, I'll keep wrestling with Landon while nursing! :)
Independent Play - coloring is also big in our house. Avery has a set of 'large' colored pencils and I buy cheap spiral notebooks of paper for her to draw in. She does like to involve me in the process sometimes and often asks me to draw things for her (spiders, rockets, her name, bunnies, cats, frogs, stars, hearts, etc, etc, etc), but that's pretty easy to do while nursing at the same time. We have a pack of dominos that has been surprisingly entertaining! She dumps them out of their box, loads them into a basket, totes that around for a while, dumps it out into her fisher price bus, drives them around, etc...before I know it, she's spend 30-45 minutes playing with them.
Hmmm... you all are actually worrying me. Nic LOVES crayons - but i think he loves that I have crayola tin that I keep them in because what he likes to do is dump it out, pile the crayons back in, and dump it out again. (NOT what I'll let him do with crayons!) ... puzzles are fun for 5 minutes, but then he throws the pieces... i'm going out to find some flash cards tha... we have some stackers/etc (like in dreshny's post) ... but those become throw toys or he loses interest pretty quick.... i was thinking i just had the wrong toys, but now im thinking nic just hasnt developed an attentuion span yet...
thanks for the suggestions tho!
Independent play: Collin's newest fascination is cars. He has the fisher price, little people garage and he likes to push all of his cars down the ramp and scream "weeee". Independent play DS is not really into coloring or drawing unless I am there to do it with him so we don't use that for independent play. Puzzles and flash cards were awesome for a time but I think he ODed. For us, books and anything with wheels (small cars, strollers, push carts, etc) are good for independent play. Right now he loves books with flaps or hidden parts. The other thing I do is toy rotation so I can bring an old toy out and it seems like new when are having a hard day.
The other I have seen but haven't done because of the mess is water play in bowls or rice play - take big bowls of rice and hide little toys in there to find.
Weather I am in the Midwest this week and man oh alive, it is cold. Yuck!
happy: Nic and Landon sound A LOT alike, esp. the throwing. Whenver he's bored/done with something, it's thrown. His attention span with anything is minimal, though this evening while coloring eggs...he was perfect and didn't throw one egg. I was shocked, and it kept his interest for quite sometime...again, I was shocked! ;)
weather: It's been warm here, I've actually broke a sweat a couple of times today! Suppose to be in the 80's tomorrow. Perfect for egg huntin'! :)
Hope everyone has a great holiday, both my babes are in bed, now I need to go put Landon's basket together. We're going to Mass at 9:30 then over to my aunts in the afternoon. weather I think today its suppose to be a big 41 degrees. I'm kinda of annoyed because I wanted to do a egg hunt outside, but its just to cool.
Both my kids were up at 7 AM yelling to me to wake up they wanted to see if Easter came yet. SO, I got them out of their beds and they ran down stairs to find eggs and their easter baskets. My DS is so happy because he "rich"(that what he tells me) now. The bunny left money in some of the plastic eggs. Only problem...he wants to go to TRU to spend his money today.
Yesterday I took DS to NYC and he had a great time..However, is major complaint was..why does it smell here? LOL I said its becasue of all the food vendors that are selling food to the people.
Hope everyone has a great day today and the kids are having fun hunting for eggs.
Congratulations Wendstress and welcome to the world Alex!
paci vs thumb DD never really took to the paci but she is a thumb sucker - especially when she is tired or upset. If I tell her "please take the thumb out of your mouth", she will for a second or two. She has a horrible callous on her thumb! It won't be easy to break that habit.
Independent Play she will sit with puzzles/books or just play with her play kitchen and food. I don't like to leave her alone with crayons since I'm scared she'll draw on places she shouldn't.
I hope everyone had a nice weekend. We had our Egg Hunt in 40 degree weather, DD had her winter coat and hat on. She had fun though picking up the eggs and filling her basket with her older cousins.
We let her eat her first major piece of chocolate (she's had the occasional chocolate chip cookie and ice cream, but not a candy bar) in the form of a bunny. She loved it and said, "chocolate, delicous, hmm tasty". Fortunately she got tired of it after eating the ears. ;)
ohh BBL with other shout outs etc...
Independent Play - Crayons, her shopping cart and play food, books, puzzles, blocks....she really plays well independently, actually.
Paci - Never took one, briefly sucked her thumb when she was an infant. We tried with the paci but she never liked it.
The trip went well, but I am sick of Elmo and Barney DVDs, LOL. Sarah again had major constipation issues, we ended up having to use a suppository on her which was just horrible. Poor thing was in so much pain though. I need to talk to her ped. about this because it is becoming more and more frequent. LOL, it felt like days of old when DH and I got so excited over her having a regular poop yesterday. :p ILs had an Easter egg hunt at their house yesterday afternoon for the three grandchildren, and Sarah caught on very quickly. She loved finding the eggs and putting them in her basket.
This afternoon I leave on a business trip with my bosses and don't get back until Wednesday night. DH is so lame, he made me leave a list of what Sarah should eat at every meal. :rolleyes:
Once again, I will vow to keep up in this new thread....:rolleyes:
I hope all the sick kids (and mommies) get better soon! Our sick month ended about a week and a half ago. First DD, then my mom, then DD again, then me. Good times.
Part Vent/Part confusion/Totally need advice???
So after reading through the posts about the pacifiers, It shed some light on my current issue.... THE BOTTLE. Yes, DD still takes 2 a day. One milk bottle for bed and one chamomile tea bottle in the middle of the night when she inevitably wakes up and comes in our room. So I have a lot of "bad" habits going at my house at night. So I was reading about the paci's (which we took from DD at 4.5 months) and the issues you guys are having and it made me realize that the bottle is DD"s paci. When she sees it at night she burst into tears until she has it in her mouth. When she wakes in the night she cries until the bottle is in her mouth. I must take her off the bottle all together and I need her to STTN in her own room!!!
So it’s now time to break these habits – but DH can not cope with her screaming. He wants to give into her right away. We did Ferber at 14 months (I insisted) and that worked for about 3 months but then it stopped working. We tried to re-ferberize about 2 months ago and she screamed in the middle of the night for 2 straight hours until we finally went to get her. So no more Ferber.
The Dr. said I should go to her in her room, no talking (except minimal talking the first night to explain that she is going to stay in her crib and that mommy is going to stay right here) and sit on the floor or in a chair. Then slowly move my “seat” closer to the door each night. I think this technique was practiced on the Supernanny. I’m scared to do this one because I know it will be tons of crying!
My SIL suggested getting the big girl bed now. She said she moved my niece, E, into a BGB at 21 months (as SIL had her second when my first niece was 22 months). E had the same issues as my DD, with the waking in the middle of the night and going to sleep with mommy and daddy. SIL said the problem was eliminated when she moved her to the bed. SIL would lay down with her for a bit each night for the first couple of weeks, then she sat on the bed with E for a couple of weeks while E was settling down for sleep. Then she eventually was able to tuck her in and leave. They gated the entry to E’s room and if E did wake in the middle of the night, SIL went to her.
I put a call into the Dr. today to talk through what I should do first – remove the bottle, deal with the sleeping…. I have no idea. Waiting for a call back.
Does anyone have any advise? Suggestions for me? I can’t function at work because I’m exhausted and I feel like there’s no end in sight!
Jessiesmama-While I am by no means an expert (;)), I can share our advice on how we weaned Abbey from the morning bottle (the last one she dropped). Nuby makes a cup that has a silicone top that is almost like a nipple. It’s a sippy, but with a soft top-- if that makes sense. (Wal-Mart has them for $1.50 each.) We switched Abbey to that for her morning milk. The first morning there was some screaming and pouting, but we stayed firm and it only took a day or two to make the transition. She likes it b/c she can still lay down and drink her milk first thing in the morning. I hid all of her bottles also b/c she would get mad when she saw them.
As for sleeping—no advice, just sympathy! Hang in there, I’m sure these ladies will have some good ideas for you.
allyray231
jessie I would deal with the sleep first IMO. Aiden just dropped the bottle about a month or so ago. He got one in the morning and one at night. He thew a few for a few days but it did not effect his sleep at all.
I would do the chair thing, mnake sure she had a nightlight in there and just let her know you are there. I still have to stay with Aiden sometimes for a bit till he gets sleepy
We have the Nubby. She won't take it...:rolleyes: Maybe I'll try again. She hasn't seen that sippy in over a month.
I'm guessing I have to take the middle of the night bottle away even if I do the crib/stay in the room method. Right?
allyray
It's not really the goign down that's the problem - it's the night waking/screaming until I take her in my bed ang give her a bottle that's the problem. I'm guessing I'll have to do this sit in the room technique in the middle of the night...
Thanks! Good luck with your transition!
Happy Easter All!
We colored eggs in the bath tub on Saturday night before bath, which made it really easy for clean up and she loved playing with all the colors. She threw a few of the eggs into the cups of dye and cracked a few, but it was a lot of fun for her.
http://s108.photobucket.com/albums/n38/Chylynn/th_DSC04828.jpg
We had an Easter Egg hunt in our backyard and Rebecca had a blast. Of course, she shook the eggs until she heard a rattling inside to know if there was a jelly bean or small M&M. Stickers were no fun in her easter eggs, but she enjoyed them at Church.
Okay, and for this one, I have to post huge so you all can get the effect. I will delete it tomorrow so it does not take up tons of space in the thread....
Are you having a bad hair day? So is Rebecca!
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n38/Chylynn/DSC04847.jpg?t=1176137894
We had to video tape it because everytime she went down the slide, her hair would stick up, but if anyone else went down the slide, their hair remained normal. It was hilarious!
JessiesMama -We did exactly what Alicia did and gave Rebecca the Nuby sippy for a month and then we gave her regular sippy cups. They are very similar to a bottle. I would work on the sleep first and then the bottle. Good luck!! It is hard when or DC have sleep issues.
Independent Play -Rebecca loves reading her books and puzzles.
Sasha -Glad to hear the trip went so well! It was great seeing you and Sarah on Thursday!
Alicia -Oy, feel better!
Paci -Night and naps only. Not looking forward to weaning her. Will probably do it after we potty train her and move her into a BGB.
Anyone else have any pictures to add of our beautiful kids?
It's not really the goign down that's the problem - it's the night waking/screaming until I take her in my bed ang give her a bottle that's the problem. I'm guessing I'll have to do this sit in the room technique in the middle of the night...
Oh yes I would say that is an issue. As far as the Nuby-IMO I think they suck. Aiden HATED them. The only way he will drink milk is out of a cup with no top that we hold for him. Granted it is stawberry milk but still.
As far as the middle of the nigh I wish I had some advice for ya!!
jessiesmama: You can take whatever I say with a grain of salt because we have, and have always had, sleep issues (for example, Asher was up until nearly 1 AM last night), but it sounds to me that if you take your ped's advice and do the gradual exit with the chair, you should still give Jessie her tea bottle so at least something is still familiar to her. Then maybe she'll extinguish the waking (and thus the bottle, too), or if not you can work on the bottles after she stops sleeping in your bed. One thing at a time, you know?
I love all the cute Easter pictures! (And Chylynn, Rebecca's hair is really funny.)
I have one semi-cute Passover picture that my mom took which I already posted in the June thread, (and yes, it's big, sorry):
jessiesmama- So sorry to hear about the sleep woes! I wish I had some advice for you. We're in the same boat with the bottle; I'd as soon throw them out, but DH insists that DS still get them (one in the morning after breakfast and one as part of the bedtime routine). I second the suggestion of an open cup- some kids just don't take to sippies, but the "grown up" aspect of the regular cup delights them. Or how about a straw cup?
Pics- Okay Chylynn, here you go :D !(Rebecca's hair on the slide is hysterical, BTW!)
Happy~Congrats on DS STTN!!
Christy~Oh no!! I hope you are feeling better.
Independent Play~DD loves to read books and play with her kitchen set. She also loves for me to put on a CD, and she'll dance for a long time to it! She liked to color for a while, but I took her crayons away last week because she thought it would be great fun to throw them and step on them. :rolleyes: Her new favorite is a book she got this past weekend. It's a play and sing book and has a piano attached to it. She also really like stacking blocks like the one's Dreshny posted here (http://www.constantchatter.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1288529&postcount=76).
Weather~It has been soooooooo cold here. We actually got snow at the end of last week! :eek: I think it may be warming up here, if you can call 52 degrees warm.
Easter~We ate breakfast with the ILs at their church. Then we went to church with my parents. Shylah was really good all morning and through lunch. My s/mom had a family reunion for lunch, so we headed to ILs for lunch. DD was really crabby by this point though, so DH and I spent about 45 minutes rocking and singing to her. Then we gave her a dose of Tylenol and Orajel (working on 3 teeth at the moment, one of which looks like it's through but not). Her mood improved after the medicine and some lunch. My parents came over that evening to bring their "Easter basket" for DD.
Jessiesmama~I want to second the Nuby sippies. They are very similar to the bottle and really made the transition from bottle much easier.
Chylynn~LOL!! I love the "bad hair day" photo!
I love all the photos everyone is posting. Our kids are absolutely adorable! Here's our photos (http://www.dropshots.com/day.php?userid=32398&cdate=20070331&ctime=095133) from the Easter Egg Hunt last weekend. I still haven't gotten the ones from yesterday in her dress uploaded!
Later!! :D
Thanks ladies! You know - I have so many "bad" habits that I have to work on with her I don't know which to tackle first. Night wakings, bottle, staying in crib????
I just got off the phone with the pediatricians assistant. She told me to worry about the bottles last. She told me to start by keeping Jessie in her room at night. She said when Jess wakes in the middle of the night to go into her room and give her the bottle (that I usually give her in my bed) in the chair in her room (the same place we do the night-night routine). She said it's ok if she falls back into a deep sleep. Then she want's Jessie back in her crib. Repeat if necessary. After doing that for a week or so, do less bottle (only fill it with 2 ozs). She wants me to check back with her in 2 weeks and tell her what's happening - then we'll decide what step 2 is. She wants the number one change to be that Jessie stays in her room. She said to work on sleep first. I appreciate that! I'll let you know how it goes! Thanks for all the suggestions.
jessiesmamma - as someone who recently went through a two week phase where DD was nightwaking, crying, wanting to sleep with us, not napping, climbing out of the crib (almost) let me shed a little light about what worked for us. Now i say for us b/c every child and every situation is different. We went to LA for a wedding a few weeks agao and even though we were in a suite (so she could have her pack n play in her own space) DD would not sleep in the pack n play and wound up in bed with us (well me as DH was on the couch) she slept fine in the bed for night and naps and when we got back to Vegas she was a mess. Would wake up and scream "mommy bed" until i couldn't take it anymore and brought her in. Now no one was sleeping -after about 2 nights i realized this was a bad habit (for us) and i needed to do something about it. Then of course it was Passover and my parents were in from NJ so DD was so wound up she wouldn't do anything. Basically what i did was as soon as i heard her wake up i would run into her room and stand at the crib and say "head down, its night night time" then i would tell her is was going to sit in the chair until she was sleeping. That is it and i did it. It sucked to sit in her room all night, sometimes an hour at a time, the first night 3X but each night it got better and by 4th night she slept through. Its been about a week and she seems back to the way she was, a decent sleeper but an early riser (7:30 - 5) We were ready to move her to a bed (even borrowed a toddler bed from a friend until we figured out what to do) but i really wanted to keep her in the crib and contained. What was nice for me was that the first few nights my mom was here so while i got up with her in the night my mom got her in the a.m. so i didn't feel so beat the next day. Just a few mintues ago she fell asleep in the car, i carried her up to her crib she woke up, i said the key words "head down night night" and i sat in the chair until she went back to sleep and left. Sleeping in bed with us is not an option as my DH is an OBGYN so he is in and out most nights. Its a hard habit to break. Good luck and stick to it. If you were able to Ferber, you will be able to do this. You need your sleep and i bet your DD does too!
Good Luck you can PM if you have any other specific questions.
alicia: Um, wth? That's terrible. You totally sound like a text book toddler, girl! ;) Feel better!
easter: Ours was nice. Landon played all.day. He had a blast hunting eggs with his cousins, though he was more interested in sitting in the wagon and having me point them out to him, then he'd get his little butt out of the wagon, go pick it up, put it in his basket and sit back down in this wagon that was in my aunts backyard! Crazy kid! I am a HORRIBLE mommy, I totally screwed up and did not take ONE freakin' pic. of my two boys together!!! WTF is wrong with me? I'm such an idiot, as you can plainly see, I'm not happy about this!
Just got back from my 6 week PP appt., all is well, and would you believe I got a fabulous easter present yesterday.....the return of AF!!! Yes, I exculsively BF ON.DEMAND (you can clearly see that from his chub ;)). Isn't that nice? Six freakin' weeks PP! I never catch a break! ;) Oh well....I got it back at 8 weeks with Landon and was convinced I was hemoraging. :) So it really wasn't a huge shock this time around, but still....
Ugh, Aidan is one sick baby. I got called by her day care at around 3 that she'd thrown up 4 times. So, I called the ped to get an appointment but none were available this afternoon so I picked her up and took her to the urgent care clinic in town that takes the army hospital's overflow. Aidan vomitted again in the car and then again twice at the clinic. They said she had a virus and gave me a script for suppositories that will stop the vomitting. I got her prescription filled and while waiting at Walgreens she threw up on me, again in the car and then again at home twice (for a total of 12 times if anyone is counting). I gave her a suppository and like 3 minutes later she projectile pooped it out with a ton of diarrhea. Yay. So I gave her a bath (she's screaming this whole time, mind you), dried her off, gave her another suppository and she did the same thing again. So, I quit giving her suppositories and just diapered her and held her till she went to sleep. She has a bit of a fever and has vomitted one more time. Ugh. She can't go back to day care tomorrow so we'll spend that day recovering...I hope she gets well soon because we have to fly to Texas on Thursday evening.
Hi Ladies! I skipped over the first 5 pages - we've been a little busy!
Alexander Jon was born on 4/2/07!
8 lbs 6 ounces
20.25 inches long
Short birth story:
9 PM - First contraction
9:45 - I woke up DH with "it's time"
Proceeded to pack car and wait for Grandma
10:30 - Checked into the hospital room
Nurse checked me - 10 cm with a little cervical lip
11:10 - started pushing
11:27 - Alex was born after about 6-7 sets of contractions
No drugs, although I begged. Apparently, they don't start epidurals when you're at 10 cm! :rolleyes:
I'll try to catch up with everyone later this week!
Ooops, forgot to post about Rebecca's two year ped appointment:
She is now 34" long and weighs 28lbs.
I was so proud of her- she did not cry one time and she even got her second Hep A shot without protesting! A far cry from our 18 month peds appointment which was a total disaster!
Pediatrician said not to try to potty train her until she starts showing more of an intrest because it is only going to fustrate her and I in the long run. She was concerned about her lack of speech, but impressed with her sign language. I am setting up an appointment with a speech therapist today. Luckily, it is covered by our insurance because we are not able to get the states free evaluation due to our financial information.
We are now going to switch (slowly) to 2% milk, than 1% milk, and finally we will be at FF milk in a few months. She said she needs to have 16-20oz of milk a day, along with yogurt and cheese to get the calcium she needs for her bones and if we choose, we can give her a childrens multivitamin, but if she eats a balanced meal, than there is no need. We will not be switch to a BGB until she is closer to 3 since she is sleeping fine in her crib.
I love my ped. and have become good friends with the PA so I just call and talk to her on these matters.
Vegasgirl
Thanks for the post! I did something similar last night. Here's how it went.
8:30pm
Put DD down
12:06 - 12:45am
DD woke, I went to her - gave her the bottle and she fell back to sleep. I placed her in her crib. The whole thing took 40 min.
3:45am - 5:25am
DD woke at 3:45. Gave bottle - tried to put her back in the crib- she screamed. Gave her the remainder of the bottle - tried to put her down - screamed. Held her one last time and put her down. She cried and begged for me to hold her "un more time" but I explained that I will sit right next to her crib until she falls asleep. She screamed, whined, pleaded "mommy hold me, pleeeeezzzee, hold me!" , told me she had a cold, told me "I don't like crib", I tried not to engage her much but to explain that she was going to sleep in her crib like a big girl. I asked her several times if she wanted to lay down and I would rub her back - she screamed "NO". She cried forever - tried to get me to talk to her - but for the most part I would only say I'm right here, it's night-night, but didn't look at her much. Finally around 5:15 she asked me to rub her back. She laid down and I rubbed her back for 10 min. She finally fell asleep until 7:30am.
I am beat - so is DH and he got to stay in bed through the whole thing. I'm working today and have to drive to PA for work tomorrow (4 hr. round trip). This is tough. Am I doing it right? Is there anything I should do differently?
Oh - and she woke up thios morning in the best mood and when I came in she said to me "So pround of you" which is what I say to her on those few and far between mornings that she SSTN. She knew she had done a good thing and that I would be proud. She told me that she satyed in her crib until "Mr. Golden Sun" came out. She even kept telling her 2 stuffed animals that she sleeps with to look out the window at Mr. Golden Sun. She also knew that she would get to play with playdoh today (which she earns by STTN). It was not exactly STTN but she did stay in her room so I brought Jessie and the playdoh to mom's house this morning!
thanks, I love the hat too and wish I had a bigger size for next year :) It's funny b/c DD likes to put it on herself and usually it is backwards or the ears are going from the front of her head to the back with the face on the side. ;)
Just wanted to pop in and say that it looks like those that celebrated Easter had a good one! I am starting to think that I am starting a holiday tradition I had hoped not to pass down. That is someone being sick!
I felt so horrible Sunday morning I was luck to be able to move off the couch to the bathroom! Sarah did get her Easter basket, but no Easter Egg hunt or church services.
I think I am feeling a bit better, so I hope that it was an infection and that it is not mono, but the doctor wants me to wait until Fri. to come see him if I am still not feeling well!
I think I finally came up with a birthday theme. I am thinking of Noah's Ark.
He LOVED coloring eggs and helping DH make Rice Krispie treats -- then didn't even want to try them. Thanks to everyone for sharing their holiday photos. Our kiddos sure are growing up fast!
Sleep training - 2nd night
Last night was better than the first. But as an added bonus she woke up yesterday morning with a lovely cold. She had no fever so I'm pressing on with the sleep training. She actually told me she had a cold the other night but I didn't believe her!
8:15pm
Down in crib
11:30PM - 11:40pm
She woke up calling for me. I went in, gave her some bottle and she was back down in 10 minutes!
I heard a couple of "mommy's" and saw her do a bit of tossing and turning on the monitor, but she stayed down and needed no intervention.
5:39am
Up for the day. This is VERY early - even for her - but I was not going to do any STing exercises at that point. She Slept from 11:40 until 5:40am without me (and with a cold) so I was very pleased with the progress.
Anything I should tweak???
It's now 7:00am and I'm about to leave for my LONG work day which will start with a 2 hour drive to my PA office. I'm so happy we got a bit more sleep last night!
