Just trying to get an idea if our doctor prescribed the right amount (we've had issues in the past with other meds). He prescribed 1 teaspoon twice a day of amoxicillin for our 19 lb. 6 month old, does this sound about right? TIA

I would think that's about right based on the prescription's my DS and DD have had. My DD weighs 11 lbs. and she gets 1/2 tsp. twice a day. DS is 2.5 and hasn't been on anything for a while but that's the dose he was getting at about that weight.

It's based more on weight than age IIRC.

Yup. DD was 19lbs the last time we had amox (the only time), and that was her dosage. She was 7mo.

That's exactly how much Tristan was prescribed and he is 15 lbs, 5 months old.

I don't think the answers you get will be accurate unless you know what level of concentration you were prescribed.... it is based upon the child's weight but it comes in different strengths.

ETA: It doesn't hurt to verify the dosage with the pharmacist....

We were just give a prescription on Friday - DD is 20 lbs and we're giving her 1 teaspoon 2x a day as well.

What is the strength, though? My kids have both taken it but at different concentrations - 125/5ml for the 8 month old and 250/5ml for the 2 year old.

Good point re: the concentration. I have NO CLUE.

I'm not sure what the concentration is, but it can vary based on the weight and the situation. Case in point: my 3 year old recently had double ear infections and was prescribed 450mg Amox - she had to take 1 1/2 teaspoon twice a day. Then she was prescribed 250mg of Amox (per 5mL) after her surgery last week, and she needs to take 1t twice a day.

DD is almost 8 months old and she gets 3.5 ounces 2x day. I think that's a bit less than a tsp. She's 20 pounds 11 ounces.

This is one I would definitely run by the pharmacist to make sure. There's so many variables, I don't think comparing to other people on a message board really will provide enough information. Good for you for double checking what the doctor has prescribed. For some reason, I'm always nervous about Rx errors.

My baby is currently taking 3ml per 3X per day...she is 14 lbs 12 oz.

The concentration should be listed right on the bottle. If you are worried, check with the pharmacist!

I also think the concentration can vary depending on how severe the infetion is, what the different circumstances are for taking the antibiotics, ect. DD has been on so many different antibiotics for her ear infections, each time they have to up the concentration, even though her weight stayed pretty much the same.

Ours is 250 mg per tsp, and we are giving 1 tsp 2 times a day to a 15 pound 5 month old.

When I got the rx from the dr I asked him to verify that it was the right dosage for DS's size. I did the same at the pharmacy.
