View Full Version : How long is your luteal phase?

Hi there-

I always hear that 12 - 16 days is the "typical" range, w/ 14 days being "average." But, I want to hear from real people, not statistics :)

Also, what can you tell me about the advantages/disadvantages of short and long luteal phases?

Thanks!!!

Usually not more than 5 or 6 days....Progesterone helped me lengthen mine.

I haven't had a period in a year (due to pg'cy and BFing) but when I did, the LP on my own was 10-11 days, on progesterone it was consistently 13 days.

As for pros/cons - funny, I never thought of LPs as having those ;) - the only pro to a shorter LP is you don't have a full 2WW when TTC. The only con is it can be more difficult to conceive without progesterone supplementation.

I think that mine is 16 (no charting, but based on EWCM and AF dates). Seems LONG to me!

Don't laugh, but mine ranges from 12-16 days :p. At its longest it was 16 days, at its shortest it was 10 days. It is usually 13-15 days :).

Nothing wrong w/ being "average" Sevilla!

Mine is almost always 12 or 13 days (I think 13 has a slight lead on 12). I've had one as short as 10, though, and two that were 15. And occasionally 11 or 14. ;)

I just started finished my first cycle of charting and had a 29 day cycle, ovulated at 17 days, so had a 12 day luteal phase.

Since I have been charting, mine has been 13 days.

Mine was 12 days long, I believe. The first month I started charting, it was only 7 I think, but I had a couple really short cycles after going off the pill, so I think it was due to that.

First full cycle charting, this is what I got.

My last cycle was 33 days, o'ing on the 22, and luteal phase was 11 days. Presently CD 11

Never knew about the luteal phase until I charted.

14 days every single time pre-pg.

Now, almost 9 mo PP, only 7. :( I'm hoping it re-regulates itself sometime soon!

My LP ranged from 8 to 10 days. Then I started progesterone supplements and the first cycle it was 16 days (!) and the second cycle 12 days (w/ spotting on days 10, 11, and 12).

My LP is usually 12-14 days. When I first went of BCP's it was consistently 9 days long, so I started taking B6 and magnesium to length my LP. Seemed to work well but now I have spotting from 10DPO until AF arrives.

When I first started charting my LP ranged from 7-11 days. I started taking B6, magnesium, and zinc back in March/April and my LP is generally 14-15 days now.

My LP truly doesn't change at all. It's 12 days & about 2 hours. My charts so all but two 12-day LP's; the 13-day LPs are when AF started late at night the cycle before. I believe I have one 11-day LP but that's probably when AF started heavy enough, late at night, rather than with spotting.

Thanks for all of the information. Does anyone know if short vs. long is prefereable. Can it ever be "too long"?

I'm so excited to see that this worked for someone else (i used to be 10-12 days, and now am 14-15)! Can i ask how long it took you to notice a difference in your LP?

Sevilla I have all my charts on FF so if you want to look at them you're welcome to. I actually saw a difference the same cycle I started taking them. The weird thing is that I started taking them midway through the cycle (I believe the same day I O'ed) and that month my LP jumped to like 14 days or something wild like that!!!

This happened to me with the Zinc too (the B6 took longer to show an effect--i started taking them about a year apart). I started the zinc around midway through my cycle and had a long LP that time too!

11 days... anything over 18 days and you're usually pregnant.

Mine were anywhere between 9 - 11 days. 10 was my average, but I usually had spotting at least a couple of days before hand. I thought progesterone was my problem too, but I got pg without any help, and I don't need progesterone supplements either.

Pros - Don't have to wait too long to find out if your pg or not!
Cons - If it's too short, may take longer to get pg.

When I first went off hormonal BC (was using Implanon, which is a small stick implanted in the upper arm) to start charting (almost 2 years ago), my LP was 10 days. I started taking B6 and got to 11 days. 12 if I was lucky. The first cycle I took B6 plus a calcium supplement that also contained magnesum and zinc, my LP was 15 days! (This was just a year ago. I was also in Spain at the time, eating a lot of meat and drinking a lot of wine.) Haven't seen that since. My LP now is usually 13 days.

Mine started off at 10-11 days right after I went off BCPs. By six months, it had lengthened out to 13 days most months. B vitamins didn't seem to help me. I think my body just needed longer to regulate.

Usually 12 or 13 days. I think I'll be pretty happy with that when we start TTC.

*bumping with a question*

Those of you that took B6 to lengthen your LP, how much did you take daily? Did you take it throughout your cycle or only after you O-ed?

Right when I got off hormonal birth control it was 10-11 days but after a few months changed to 13-14 days up to 16 days a few times and has held consistantly to that for the past two years.

Pros-I get a nice break between O pains and pains of starting a new cycle, may be easier to get pregnant, cycle is very regular 30 days every month.

Cons-Could take a while to confirm pregnancy. I haven't really heard of cons for average or long LP's so if anyone knows of some please share!

I take Fertility Blend and now my LP is 13-14 days (up from 11). I noticed the difference the first cycle.

For the 3 cycles before I got PG a couple of years ago, my LP was 13-16 days. I had just come off of BCPs. Now we're TTC#2 and my LP is only 9-10 days long. I'm BF'ing my DD so I think that's why it's short now. I just started taking 100mg of B6 and B Complex, so I'll see if that helps with this cycle.

Mine was always 13-14 days long. If it's too short, your progesterone is probably low and the baby won't have time to implant into your uterus.

Approx 14 days. When I'm on Enticort, a steroid, it's considrably less, but my cycles then are usually about 22-24 days. When I'm regular, I tend to be a 28 day gal, set the clock by it, as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west....well you get the idea.

*bumping with a question*

Those of you that took B6 to lengthen your LP, how much did you take daily? Did you take it throughout your cycle or only after you O-ed?PICKLE...I just began taking B6 with magnesium three times daily this cycle and I'm on CD 20. (That's the dosage the bottle recommends...unfortunately, I threw away the bottle last week when I transferred the pills to my pill carrier in my purse.) So until I buy another I can't tell you how many mg each pill is, but the answer to the other question is I took it throughout my cycle because I knew there would probably be better benefit of my body getting used to it over the entire 28 or 29 day period than just 12-14 days at the end. We'll see how that goes 'cuz my last 2 cycles since I've only been charting 2 months had LPs of 11 days. I got the whole B6 idea from my sorority sister who had an 8 or 9 day LP without it and on her first cycle using it got PG!!

Mine was around 9 days long, sometimes shorter and I usually spotted a couple of days before hand. When I first started charting and identified my short lp, I got paranoid and thought we were going to have trouble conceiving b/c of it, so prior to TTC I took B6 and magnesium to see if that would lengthen it. They did help - adding maybe a day or two to my LP, but for what it is worth, since we werent' TTC yet and I got lazy, I had stopped taking them for months and wasn't when we did get pregnant.

I'm exactly like Mrs.CantDecide and Magrat. I suspect that I had a slightly delayed temp rise some months -- my EDD is 2 days before I thought it would be based on my temps and EWCM, and I typically had about 2 days between pos OPK and temp shift.

Mine vary from 8-12 days, with 10 being my average and 8 or 12 being very rare.

I always thought it wasn't supposed to change in length that much, but for me it does.

Interesting! My due date is 3 days before I thought it would be (based on an 8 week ultrasound). I wonder if I O'd before I thought.

About 11 days avg...on the shorter side :(

Steve's Sweety, I was under the impression that your luteal phase would not change much either, but mine fluctuates between 9 and 12 days, too.

Prior to that it has ranged from 12-14 days....
