Your moderators for this thread are ellidew and Reenie!

Who we are:

We are a group of women who for 1 reason or another want to shed a few (or more) lbs. We need the encouragement of others no matter their size or goal and we thrive in an atmosphere where we can all support one another.

Want to join the fun?!?

We welcome one and all. It doesn’t matter what diet you are on (if any) or how many miles a week you run (if any) we will all find lots of help and support here.

Feel free to join at any time during the challenge.
It’s better to join NOW than to wait until we start a new challenge!

This week is going to be a challenge for me...I'm leaving this afternoon for a trip with my 8th and 9th graders (returning Wednesday afternoon), and I won't have a lot of control over food choices. I'm bringing some things with me, but I'm still a bit worried about being able to make the best choices to stay within my calorie range. My sleep is also going to be all out of whack - tonight and Tuesday night will be spent on bus rides, and it's hard for me to sleep on a bus. On the plus side, though, while we're there (DC), I know we'll be doing a ton of walking, so at least I'll get some cardio in!

8 Secrets of the Naturally Slim:

Act like you're a size smaller, and you'll be a size smaller. How thin women thrive in a supersized world.
By Megan McMorris, Prevention magazine

We all have that one thin friend—the one who's never bullied into submission by the bread basket, and when she says "I'll just have a bite," she does just that. Is she for real? Turns out, research shows that thin people simply don't think about food the same way as—well, the rest of us. "Thin people have a relaxed relationship with food," explains David L. Katz, MD, an associate professor adjunct in public health at Yale University. "Those who are overweight, however, tend to be preoccupied by it. They focus on how much or how often they eat, or attach labels like good and bad to certain foods. As a result, mealtime is always on the brain."

Here, weight loss experts explore the mysterious minds of the "naturally" slim. Learn what they do, what they don't, and how you can act the part.

1. They Choose Satisfied Over Stuffed

On a fullness scale of 1 to 10, the slim stop eating at a level of 6 or 7, says Jill Fleming, RD, author of Thin People Don't Clean Their Plates. The rest of us may keep going to an 8 or 10. Why? It may be because you mistakenly equate the sensation of fullness with satisfaction and feel deprived if you stop short, says Fleming. Or you may just be used to finishing what's in front of you, regardless of whether you really need it.

Copy Them: About halfway through your next meal, put your fork down and, using the 1 to 10 scale, rate your level of fullness. Do it again when you have about five bites left. The goal is to increase your awareness of how satisfied you feel during a meal. (Bonus: It also slows down your eating, which allows the sensation of fullness to settle in.)

2. They Realize Hunger Isn't An Emergency

Most of us who struggle with extra pounds tend to view hunger as a condition that needs to be cured—and fast, says Judith S. Beck, PhD, author of the new Beck Diet Solution. "If you fear hunger, you might routinely overeat to avoid it," she says. Thin people tolerate it because they know hunger pangs always come and go, buying them some time.

Copy Them: Pick a busy day to purposely delay lunch by an hour or two. Or try skipping an afternoon snack one day. You'll see that you can still function just fine. Then next time you feel those grumbles, you'll hold off before making a beeline for the fridge.

3. They Don't Use Food To Cure The Blues

It's not that thin women are immune to emotional eating, says Kara Gallagher, PhD, a weight loss expert based in Louisville. But they tend to recognize when they're doing it and stop.

Copy Them: Add the word 'Halt' to your vocabulary, says Gallagher. More than just a command (as in stop eating that entire sleeve of cookies), it's an acronym that stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired—the four most common triggers for emotional eating.

If you're truly hungry, choose a balanced snack, such as a handful of nuts, to tide you over until your next meal. But if you're angry, lonely, or tired, seek an alternative calorie-free solution to your emotional need. Blow off steam by going for a run or just jumping around—the heartbeat boost will help dissipate your anger. Lonely? Call a friend, e-mail your kid, or walk to the park or mall. Being around others will make you feel more connected to your community (even if you don't bump into anyone you know). If you're tired, for heaven's sake, sleep!

4. They Eat More Fruit

Lean people, on average, have one more serving of fruit and eat more fiber and less fat per day than overweight people, reports a 2006 study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

Copy Them: Start tinkering. Examine your diet for ways to add whole fruits (not juices) to your meals and snacks. Aim for two or three servings per day. Sprinkle berries in your cereal or on your yogurt. Add sliced pears to your turkey sandwich, or bake an apple for dessert. Keep a bowl of fruit on your kitchen table or desk to motivate you to think fruit first, vending machine never.

5. They're Creatures Of Habit

Any dietitian will tell you that a varied diet is good—but too much variety can backfire, says Katz, author of The Flavor Point Diet. Studies have shown that too many tastes and textures encourage you to overeat, he explains. "Thin people have what I call a food groove—the majority of their meals consist of well-planned staples," says Beck. "There are a few surprises thrown in, but for the most part, their diets are fairly predictable."

Copy Them: Try to be as consistent as possible with your major meals—have cereal for breakfast, a salad at lunch, and so forth. It's okay to add grilled chicken to the salad one day and tuna the next, but by sticking to a loosely prescribed meal schedule, you limit the opportunities to overindulge.

6. They Have A Self-Control Gene

Researchers at Tufts University found that the biggest predictor of weight gain among women in their 50s and 60s was their level of disinhibition, or unrestrained behavior. Women with low disinhibition (in other words, a finely tuned sense of restraint) had the lowest body mass index. High disinhibition (i.e., low restraint) was linked to an adult weight gain of as much as 33 pounds.

Copy Them: Prepare for moments when your disinhibition is likely to be higher—such as when you're in a festive atmosphere with a large group of friends. If you're at a party, tell yourself you'll take one of every fourth passed hors d'oeuvre. If you're out at dinner, order an appetizer portion and share dessert. Or if you're stressed—another low-restraint moment—make sure you have a source of crunchy snacks (like fruit or carrot sticks) at the ready.

7. They're Movers And Shakers

On average, slim people are on their feet an extra 2 1/2 hours per day—which can help burn off 33 pounds a year, according to a study from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Copy Them: Try a reality check. Studies have shown that people often overestimate how active they really are, says Gallagher. Most people actually spend 16 to 20 hours a day just sitting. Wear a pedometer on an average day, and see how close you get to the recommended 10,000 steps. Your day should combine 30 minutes of structured exercise with a variety of healthy habits, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or mopping the floor with extra vigor. To see how many calories your activities burn, see the exercise calculator at www.caloriecontrol.org.

8. They Sleep—Well

They snooze 2 more hours per week, compared with overweight people, says a study from Eastern Virginia Medical School. Researchers theorize that a lack of shut-eye is linked to lower levels of appetite-suppressing hormones like leptin and higher levels of the appetite-boosting hormone ghrelin.

Copy Them: Two extra hours of sleep a week is only 17 more minutes a day—a lot more manageable, even for the most packed of schedules. Start there and slowly work toward 8 hours of snooze time a night—the right amount for most adults.

Quick Tip

Eat breakfast! 78% of successful dieters do it every day, according to the National Weight Control Registry, A database of more than 5,000 people who've lost more than 30 pounds and kept the weight off for at least a year.

Good article ellidew. This is the toughest part for me. I am running out the door every day and totally forget to grab something to eat for breakfast. I'm usually not even hungry until lunch time and totally forget about breakfast all togeather. Like today for example, I haven't eaten anything yet and it's already after noon. It's just really a hard one for me. I don't feel hungry.

Way to go on the "no gains" so far guys!! You're all doing great! Espcially those of you dealing with AF. That's always a nasty time to have to be weighing in.

ellidew That's a great article! Thanks for posting it.

Great job QueenDD-
When I first read your stats I thought you lost 9.2 lbs in one week! I was like, wow, what diet is SHE doing!? 1.4 is much better!

Keep up the good work everyone! I plan to weigh in tomorrow morning...I have started the Core plan (on Wednesday) so I am hoping to see a loss!

What rewards do you guys have in mind if you get your goal for this challenge?
My husband is going to buy me a one hour massage if I reach my goal...which is great because I love massages but am too cheap to buy them for myself!

Reward: Chocolate Cake? Just kidding :D Ya know, since i've started dieting post pregnancy i haven't set any reward marks. I remember doing that last time around and it was a real motivator. I'll have to think of something really good. :) I could use a pedicure! I don't know if i can wait until i memorial day though! I better start losing weight faster! lol.

I'll be rooting for you to reach goal ambula! I had a massage a few weeks ago that was just heavenly!

Rewards~Definately have to find something. There are a TON of movies I want to go see in theatres. Maybe I'll treat myself to 2 instead of just 1 big hit that month! (I don't go every month, usually only when there is a big movie - POTC, Shrek, Harry Potter, etc. - but there are 3 big movies coming out in May!)

Keep it up Eloo.

Can someone come over here and put a muzzle on me? Better yet, an iron jaw clamp! Seriously... someone needs to do SOMETHING! lol. I don't get it. The last time i dieted pre baby i was so motivated and lost the weight so quickly and temptation didn't bother me. This time around everything looks yummy. Pizza, ice cream, cake, stupid things like crackers, cookies, etc... What the bloody hell is wrong with me? Any suggestions on getting motivated and staying that way? Last time i was just motivated and didn't need to do anything. I guess i just need to STOP eating all the extra crap! I haven't had a gain yet but i'd be losing so much faster if i'd just stick to it.

I guess a short term goal is in order. I am not going to eat anything off plan for the next 10 days because in 10 days we are going to Texas and will inevitably eat Mexican food at every single meal :) Plus, why would I want to see family i haven't seen in a year while i'm 15 pounds heavier? That's just awful!

ARGH! I'm so mad at myself!

ellidew- I feel your pain, I'm having the same issues with food. I feel like I've come a long way in uderstanding food and the role it has played in my weight gain, but I'm still not pushing myself to truly follow what I've learned. I know I would be losing much faster too, I just need some willpower. I think rewards are a good motivator. ARGH!

Speaking of rewards, I just found the most gorgeous shirt to wear to a wedding at the end of July, I think when I lose 12 more pounds I'd like to reward myself with a skirt to go with it.

elliedew- I completely understand where you are coming from. I am not where I thought I would be 8 months pp. I honestly haven't lost a pound since 4 weeks pp (I am at my pre-pregnancy weight which obviously was way higher than I wanted) - okay, I've lost and gained the same 3-4 lbs a bunch since then.
I've read a lot of articles that talk about the importance of sleep and weight loss. DD is pretty good at STTN, but I don't STTN very well.
Plus the added stress of working and having a kid is making it very, very hard.

And we want to ttc #2 this summer - I thought I would be down to my wedding weight (25 less) at the very least by then. Right now hitting my 10% goal (21 lbs) really sounds like a miracle.

I don't mind at all. I generally wear a size 4, though I do have some size 2s that fit, as well. When I was at my top weight (128), I was still able to squeeze into my 4's, but only barely. I probably should have been in a 6, but couldn't bring myself to spend money on new clothes when I had perfectly nice ones in the closet -- which is one of the reasons I decided to take the weight off.

I'm giving you the info on when I was 128 so that you can compare what our bodies are like since you're pretty close to 128 now.

I'm looking forward to weigh in this week because I know I've lost at least a little. I managed to get food poisoning last Friday night, so despite being on vacation, I didn't eat for 2 days. Not the best way to lose weight, but I'll take it. ;)

Thanks, MLA, that is really helpful. It seems to me that every ten pounds or so, I go down a size. Right now I'm in an 8... they're starting to feel a teeny bit loose at the end of the day, but 8 is working now. I was thinking that, according to my above theory, when I make it to my goal weight, I'll be in a four, but since you're there, I wanted to ask you, and I learned exactly what I hoped to. :D Thanks for being so forthright. :) Sorry you got food poisoning. Why does it take 7 whole days of eating really, really healthy just to lose 1 pound, but it only takes 1 day(Easter) of not really staying on points (although still trying to make smart choices) to gain 1 pound?!?!?

I desperately need a wardrobe overhaul, so I'm trying out a new reward system where I get to buy myself a new item or two every week I show a loss. I think this will work better than most of my other reward schemes, since I'm taking the weight off very slowly and get impatient waiting for bigger rewards. Plus I need the clothes anyway - I'm wearing things that are worn out or don't fit right just to make it through the week without repeating outfits.

Ugh, I'm really mad at myself. I actually did a 2 day juice fast at the beginning of the week, but was already sick and it made me sicker. So I rebounded off of it too much- ate everything in sight! I guess given that, 1 pound isn't so bad, but gah- sometimes this feels so frustratingly slow even when I do everything right, so weeks when I backslide are even worse.

What all are you ladies doing to lose the weight? Most of you post -1 to -3 every week and I am just in awe of you! Do you exercise every day? Count calories?

I would be upset because of the gain, but I'm not because I'm bloated (really scrutinizing my weight loss patterns has shown me that I get bloated around ovulation) and because I was perfect all week (even Easter!) in terms of eating and exercising on plan, so there's not much I can do about it. I'm sure I'll show a loss next week--- I will not allow myself to fall off of the horse because of a little water retention!

Reenie
04-15-2007, 08:37 AM
shellslake I exercise 5 days/week and I count calories. I know it looks bad above, but as I mentioned, this week is just water (I know it because yesterday I was actually down 0.2 lb); but when I'm not bloated and consistently follow my plan, I always show loss or maintenance.

Is it ok if I post my weigh in on Mondays? I go to weight watchers on Monday and I try not to weigh in between because it messes with my head and I get upset if there is a midweek gain. I have never done one of these before so I wasn't sure if that was ok or not? Thanks!

ellidew- Good Luck! :D I'm awful with Mexican Food too - it's a tough one. Try skipping chips and having salad instead, and other than that I say go easy on the cheese. ;)

BumbleB- That was a joke about skipping the chips, right? You must've said the cheese thing in a moment of insanity as well! ;) Thanks for the well wishes. I'm just going to keep reminding myself that it's only a couple of days and having to lose it again would suck!
I'm guilty of boredom eating too. When i'm busy being creative and having fun i don't even think about food but i'm awful during down time. Just don't keep anything at work worth eating and that should help.

I don't know what happened this week. I've worked out 3 times (which is about 3x as much as I normally do :o), and I've stuck to my calories almost every single day. The only thing I can think of is that I'm ovulating, and my weight always peaks during O.

Happy1
04-27-2007, 10:31 AM
tgr68 It could also be from fat turning to muscle. If you aren't used to exercising, it seems that the body appears to gain before it loses. Muscle weighs more than fat so you did some fabulous stuff for your body by exercising but it just takes a bit for your body to adjust.

I know that it is frustrating, but if you stuck to your food plan and exercised, it will eventually come off. I find that it usually takes the body two weeks to catch up with the loss. So, if your weight is up this week, and you continue to follow your plan, it will show good results next week. Keep your chin up! You are doing a great job staying on plan! :)

I know exactly how you feel, bamboo. I was doing great all week, then went out for dinner and drinks and doubled my calorie intake for the day. Blech. The only consolation I can offer is that eventually even the smallest percentages of a pound do add up.

Good job everybody! I have been perfect on this all week and it's still only a little loss. *shrug* I guess maybe it has to do with having AF. Hopefully, next week it will be more.

MLA You're so close! You can do it this week to make your long-term goal! :D

I don't know -- I was pretty bad this weekend, and AF should be here any day now. I generally gain or stay flat with AF, so it may be another week or so. But I'm very happy that I'm so close! :)

I had another week of not watching AT ALL and had a gain...which was expected. But I am back on track (hopefully) this week and look to see small loss this week...lets hope, anyway!

Its a very stressful time at work and in grad school, not to mention with my DH's grandmother in the hospital still. For some reason, I just let myself eat whatever I want! I know its a stress/comfort thing...so I am trying to reduce stress and take control. Its my own fault and I need to stop making excuses!

Congrats to everyone out there who is losing...you guys are doing great!!

tgr- Sorry you are having a tough week. I hope things get better.

I'm having problems too. I'm not emotional eating or stress eating i just seem to be constantly hungry! maybe i'm pregnant ;) jk! Seriously, I eat and then i'm still hungry. My stomach has been growling this week for the first time in i don't know how long. LA Weightloss lets you eat so much food that i'm not typically hungry but this week i can't seem to satisfy my stomach or my taste buds. Maybe it's because i have a cold complete with runny nose, sore throat, and drowsiness. Yuck.

Ellidew~Ugh! I hope you start feeling better soon. I've been fighting allergies this week myself, so I imagine that's part of what's causing me to eat everything in sight.
