I'm most likely having a tubal before I leave the hospital after DC3 is born. I discussed this briefly with my dr but once I left I thought of something--what do they use to numb the area? I had DS2 as a non-medicated VBAC and planned to do DC3 the same if all goes well. I'm wondering if I'm going to avoid drugs for my birth and then end up with a spinal or epi or something just to have my tubes tied? I'm really hoping that's not the case but short of putting me under general I'm not sure what else they would use (yes I can ask my dr but my next appt isn't for 4 weeks and I'm curious now). What did everyone else have who had one?

I did a quick search and almost everything said it can be done with either local or general.
Since you said you would "most likely" be having a tubal after dc3 I wanted to throw this option out there for you. I have absolutely no experience with it, it just looks interesting. I believe it also has a higher success rate than the standard procedure. It's a non-surgical procedure and the recovery time is faster (which I would think would be a big plus considering you'll have another baby to take care of).
Essure Permanent Birth Control--there is a page on their website comparing with tubal ligation

When they are performed at the hospital where I work, general anesthesia is used. Tubals are also almost exclusively done laparoscopically here, meaning they fill your belly with air, make a couple of tiny incisions, and use a camera and scope to visualize the area and complete the procedure. We are also doing several procedures similar the the Essure that was mentioned and the patients seem to be pleased with the experience, so that might be a good option to consider.

My tubal was done after my c-section, and general anesthesia was used.

Thanks everyone. I'll check out Essure. I know my dr said if I did the "regular" tubal they'd just do it before I checked out from having DS3 and it would sort of be lap but not really because the uterus is still swelled and they can do it a little differently but she didn't totally elaborate since I'm only 12 weeks now and figured we had time to discuss it more fully closer to my EDD.
