View Full Version : Tell me what you craved while pregnant!

For me, its been all about Taco Bell and Campbell's soup! I don't get the soup thing. I've always been a big soup eater my whole life, but as an adult, I always got the premium soups. You know, Progresso, Campbell's Select, etc. As soon as I got pregnant, I immediately reverted to the old red and white cans; preferring Chicken & Stars, Double Noodle and Tomato & Rice. So weird.

And Taco Bell! I loved it before, but now could eat eat multiple times in a week, if allowed. I am overly fond of Meximelts and Southwest Steak Border Bowls with extra red sauce to be exact. Unfortunately, as my pregnancy has progressed, my body has not been very kind to me when I eat Taco Bell, so I've had to cut back unless I want to chase my poor DH out of the room. :o

What is/was your the food closest to your heart while pregnant?

During the first trimester, it was ice cream. Straight up white vanilla. From there it was cream cheese. I ate it on everything from bagels to crackers! Then it progressed into hamburgers. Now it's pickles. Lots and lots of pickles. :o

I'm only 19 weeks, and if it's been like this, I'm interested to see if I'm going to be moving into combining the pickles and ice cream! ;)

Dh said he knew I was pregnant when I started craving salad. I typically am not a huge fan of salad.. eat it a few times a year if that. But in the beginning I HAD to have salad every day. Shortly after I switched to cheese.. anything with melted cheese on it sounded like heaven to me. I'm still eating massive amounts of cheese. I also went through a 2 or 3 week ice cream phase.

Last year while pregnant with my DS, it was McDonalds... And unfortunately I caved into the cravings, big time...

With this pregnancy, it's McDonalds again. I'm doing a lot better staving them off this time though...

Went in this order:

McD's 1/4 lbers with cheese (1st tri mainly) ** I never ate meat either**
BK Fish sandwhiches (100% 2nd tri only)
Pizza (tombstones) (2nd & 3rd tri)
Root Beer (OMG that stuff is amazing at this point)
DQ Strawberry sundaes (had to substitute with McD's strawberry shakes sometimes  3rd tri)
Orange Sherbet by the quarts (3rd tri)

I think that about does it......

With DD - Mexican food! I had to have it, all day long. I would make it at home, eat the crappy tv dinners, buy it for lunch & dinner from Taco Bell to nice restaurants. Didn't have to taste good, I just had to have it :p.

With DS - Sweet iced tea. I'm thinking the Mexican food was better; I ate a lot, but it wasn't as full of sugar as my tea is ;).

It started with pita chips & bleu cheese dip (pasteurized, of course). Right now it seems to be anything sweet, but mostly juicy fruit (mmmm...pineapple).

I'm a weirdo, I craved nothing. I barely ate when I was pg. Was never hungry. Dh was bummed that I had no cravings because he had a plan of action for those overnight cravings. We have a fridge in the garage. He was going to stock it with everything I wanted then when I sent him out at night he would sleep in the car for a half hour or so then come in with what a wanted. He is too funny. He also decided I needed to have a craving so he made it Drakes cakes swiss rolls. He brought them home all the time. He just loved the attention he got at the stores when he would walk up tp the register with like 10 in his hand. He loved telling everyone, my wife is pregnant and must have these. LOL

With DD I had terrible food aversions in the first trimester so I don't know if I'd call them cravings so much as the only foods I could gag down. Those were vegetable beef soup (Campbells Alphabet soup), Cheetos, frozen fruit juice bars, and cooked celery (in soup). That's all I ate for about 2 months and I felt so bad going to my midwife appt and fessing up to eating nothing but Cheetos!

With this pregnancy the thought of vegetable soup does NOT sound good. Cheetos do but I'm trying to eat healthier alternatives since I'm doing better this time around! Mostly I'm craving beef in the form of steak or tri tip. BBQ is where it's at! Also enjoying carrots with ranch dip and the dreaded McDonalds. I swear I rarely eat at McDonalds except when I'm pg. I'm having a really hard time drinking fluids but at the moment Lemon Nestea and orange juice are the only things I can drink.

I'm only 14 weeks, so I can only give you my "so far".
Kraft Mac and Cheese...you know, with the power cheese packet! That's what I had for supper last night and I wanted it tonight.
Spaghetti-Os with franks
pickles-the Clausen brand

mkvh
03-16-2007, 06:53 PM
I craved ANYTHING with vinegar in the first tri. I would eat bowls of shredded carrots doused in apple cider vinegar and salt instead of dinner. And salad. And Jess, I still have a partially eaten jar of Clausen's in the fridge! Third tri I was all about frappucinos, ICs from Panera, Steak n Shake milkshakes, and ice cream, particularly this blueberry sorbet from a local ice cream parlor.

Taco Bell. Big time. Of course, I am a huge Taco Bell fan, but I'm finding myself running errands at lunch time just so that I have an excuse to stop by Taco Bell. And more than once, I've been at Taco Bell at 10 in the morning. :)

I had a thing for pickles a few weeks ago, but that seems to have gone away. Right now I crave fruit-flavored sweets. Things like Life Savers.

03-16-2007, 09:28 PM
I craved oranges and mangos very early on.

No other major cravings but when I would get a craving, I HAD TO HAVE it!!

I remember one night I wanted Golden Graham cereal. Dunno where that craving came from. I sent DH to the store to get them and he came home with a box of graham crackers, not cereal. I wanted to kill him!!! He couldn't understand why on earth I was so upset...... hee hee.

I was another one of those that were extremely sick but at different points in my pregnancy I craved coffee flavored ice cream, vinegar tasting things, pickles, olives, block cheese cut up, really cold fruit, I know there was more but I can't remember...

so far I'm just 6 weeks, but lots of bread and cheese or mac and cheese or nachos - mainly anything with lots of cheese. also chips and salsa, which I wasn't a big fan of before, lots of oranges and cucumbers and salads. oddly enough nothing sweet except coke (caffeine free) and we were strictly a no soft drink house before.

If it was bad for me, I craved it. I got off my usual diet of healthier fare and went straight for fast food and anything sugary. :D I couldn't stomach my favorite lunchtime salad anymore, I started gagging every time I tried a forkful. Taco Bell, McD's, In N Out, Carl's Jr. Yum! ;) I couldn't get enough cookies, candy, brownies, cake, cupcakes and other assorted baked goods either.

Vegetables during the first few weeks. Especially broccoli and Greek salad. Then for a few weeks I craved meat (not a lot, but more than is usual for me).

After that, any and all dairy products (plain yogurt, cheese, milk), and citrus (oranges, tangerines).

I have never craved anything that I would find disgusting while not pregnant (none of the stereotypical pickes-and-ice-cream gross-out combos that you see it sitcome).

I never had any strong aversions to food I ordinarily tolerate.

Yes. When I was 7 weeks along, I just HAD to have KIDNEY BEANS. I was home taking care of DS (who was sleeping) and I couldn't leave the house. DH was due to arrive home in ~1/2 hour, so I called him and asked him to pick up a can of kidney beans at the grocery store on the way home.

He walks in the door. "Hi, glad you're home! Um, where are my beans?" "Oh, I thought since you want kidney beans, I'd make chili on Friday" "FRIDAY???? Today's Tuesday, and I'm pregnant, and I want KIDNEY BEANS. Don't take off your coat. Out to the grocery store you go! Don't come back unless you have beans!!!"

My one significant craving: Slurpees. I hadn't had one in years, but I couldn't get enough of them when I was pregnant.

I had a lot of different "spur of the moment" cravings, but they usually passed as quick as they came (and usually before I did anything about them). The few times I wanted ice cream, it had to be Neopolitan, which I also hadn't had in years.

I have gone through phases...Ichiban noodle phase, Honey Nut Cheerio phase, strawberry ice cream phase, Rocky Road Ice cream phase...The one and only thing that has stuck with me is fruit. I am eating sooo much fruit it is insane. I probably eat about 4-6 oranges a day...a couple of apples...and when I get my hands on a pineapple I scarf it down in a few hours! This kid is either going to love fruit or hate it :p

I had to come back in and post that my cravings for sweet things is definitely on the rise. So far I'm able to hold it at bay with sugar free ice cream bars and puddings, but man...EVERYTHING sounds good. And then DH comes home from the grocery store with a piece of strawberry shortcake. I keep opening the fridge to look at it....:o

Pizza Hut

No "I have to have it now" cravings, but I've eaten more fruit, dairy, cereal, and sweets than I did pre-pregnancy.

I know I had a lot of aversions my first trimester, but the only one I can remember now is fast food and hamburger.

03-18-2007, 03:58 PM
I don't recall having any aversions. I definitely craved Taco Bell throughout all trimesters! I always made DH go get me Nachos Bellgrande w/out beans and a huge pepsi. I had that at least once a week. I also craved McD's fries-fresh, hot and salty.

I didn't crave anything until the last trimester of my pregnancy, and then it was all about Mrs. Smith's Pumpkin Pies!! Oh, and I ate them!! Not what I would recommend anyone doing. I gained 6# in the first two trimesters combined... and then I gained 54# in the last trimester - all pumpkin pie!! I couldn't even look at one for two years after I had my son.

I'm tickled to see that I'm not the only one around here with a serious Taco Bell addiction!

It's stopped since I hit the second trimester, but the first trimester I was there about 3 times a week right after school...I was always STARVING at 4:00 in the afternoon. Crunchy Taco supremes with beans instead of beef. Heaven. Also ate a lot of McDonald's fries. Oh, and those TGIFriday's Cheddar and Bacon potato skins form the freezer section. Yum....

This trimester...Not much, really. Sweets. Oranges. I realized this morning that I've probably drunk more orange juice during this pregnancy than I had in my entire life up tho this point.

Curious to see where things go from here...

During the first trimester, it was ice cream. Straight up white vanilla. From there it was cream cheese. I ate it on everything from bagels to crackers!

Me too! Vanilla ice cream with caramel topping. I actually refuse to buy the ice cream in the store anymore because I go through an entire container in 3 days.

Also the cream cheese in the first trimester! I never really realized it was a craving until I saw you type it out. I had to have cream cheese on whole wheat bagels like twice a day every day. But lately the half used container of cream cheese is sitting in my fridge.

With DD I didn't have many cravings, just shrimp and salami. But I couldn't stand grilled chicken or greek food which killed me because before pregnancy I lived off of greek salads with grilled chicken.

I am definitely craving sweet things with this pregnancy. I always have a stash of sour worms, or peach rings in my car. DH thinks it's just because it's winter and I'm fighting the winter blues. he could be right since sugar has always been my go-to when I'm a little down.

I think I've posted in here before, but my cravings change all the time.

First trimester, it was sausage biscuits (the twin packs from Rudy's Farm) - I ate two or three twin-packs a day! Also, bagels w/ cream cheese and raisin toast. I really loaded up on carbs those first three months.

Second trimester, it was fruit. Could not get enough pineapple, granny smith apples, and clementines.

So far into this 3rd trimester, it's been ice cream - specifically, Oreo McFlurries. I could eat one every single day, but I'm trying to stick to only one or two a week.

I am currently LOVING anything icy and cold....ice cream!! YUMMY!

I'm also anemic, so I've been craving ice chips...but since adding more iron, that seems to be subsiding.

Non "food" WEIRD cravings I have are the smell of gasoline and Sharpie pens AND have this intense desire to eat paper...like napkins and such. SO ODD!
Of course I'm not, but I WANT TO! LOL

First tri: seltzer, oranges, pineapple, mango, mac and cheese, and like LexyLou and jessesgirl: cream cheese (w/bagels). I couldn't stand anything sweet or chocolate-y.

Second tri (now): chocolate, especially Reese's; Corn Pops, lemonade, iced tea, oranges, apples, and spaghetti w/meatballs.

I had read about some women having these cravings but you are the first person I've come across that actually has had them! Mine differed somewhat with each pregnancy.

1st--I craved fruit, strawberry poptarts, eggos, arbys roast beef sandwiches
2nd--chocolate, mexican food, steak (interestingly enough I couldn't stand any of those my first pg)
3r--so far I've craved Arby's, veggies (raw), fruit.

Roast Beef, even though I don't eat red meat! But it turned out I was anemic/iron deficient. Once I started iron supplements, that craving went away.

What's weird is that since giving birth I've had a ridiculous chocolate craving.

With DD1 I craved MILK. I wouldn't touch the stuff with a 10 foot pole defore I was pregnant. Now, I still like it. Weird! I also craved Mac n cheese.

I know what you mean! My DH was out of town for a couple of weeks and I went through container after container of the stuff. Now when I think about it, it's "Cream cheese sounds good." but it's not a Must.Have.Now craving as it was before. I haven't even touched it since I've switched to pickles and hamburgers. :o

I forgot to mention popcorn earlier. That's the only food that hasn't made me ill just thinking about it at one time or another.

I'm also on to bagels now! I haven't eaten them in years, and all of a sudden I'm taking a 5 mile detour to Einstein's! I'm hitting Costco later today & am going to stock up. I'm sure as soon as I do the craving will go away.

Bearing in mind I normally have a HUGE sweet tooth - it was all sweets, all the time before I got pregnant. However, with this baby, it was all spicy, spicy, spicy at first. Seriously, I could not get enough spicy food. I normally like mildly hot things but the hotter the better. I could have eaten jalapeņos straight no problem - not something I would have said 15 weeks ago!

Then it progressed to salty - pickles, chips, anything salty made me happy.

The only sweet thing I wanted/want was chocolate milk.

Now, I am not really craving anything terribly strongly. I just get very grumpy if something i happen to decide I want is not available. :D

Asha

Now, I am not really craving anything terribly strongly. I just get very grumpy if something i happen to decide I want is not available

that's how i am. i was so upset when i discovered my mil had used up all my white flour without telling me and i couldn't make cookies. i couldn't go out to the grocery store either bc there was a huge ice storm. i tried to make them with wheat flour, but they just weren't the same.

this makes grocery shopping challenging bc i never really want the same thing. it happens at restaurants too. i change my mind about what i want to eat by the time the food i ordered comes to the table. i end up wanting what the others have ordered.

Jimmy and Sue-bert-
Thanks!

I looked up PICA on the net and found this:

Although consumption of some items may be harmless, pica is considered to be a serious eating disorder that can sometimes result in serious health problems such as lead poisoning and iron-deficiency anemia.

Yep. I'm anemic and am taking extra iron AND eating more red meat..so perhaps this helps explain.

ALSO, found this interesting:
pregnancy, but it's been suggested that pica during pregnancy occurs more frequently in women who exhibited similar practices during their childhood or before pregnancy or who have a history of pica in their family

I TOTALLY used to crave and DID sometimes eat PAPER as a kid, around age 8 or so I think. I know..weird kid. LOL!
Anyhow..thought that was funny that I did that as a kid and now crave it since I'm pg.

Okay...non food craving t/j over. :)

Sweet is for girls and salty is for boys.

My cravings were funny, at least looking back. I craved ribs and wanted them all the time, but as soon as I ate one, I threw up. I had a thing for ice cream, popsicles, smoothies- anything cold like that. For weeks on end, all I could stomach was milkshakes made with vanilla ice cream (not the good stuff like Hagen Daaz, it had to be cheap generic stuff) and pulp free orange juice. For a long time I had to eat pineapple for breakfast and a caprese salad for lunch, I would not eat anything else.

Salty for boys, eh? :o We'll see how that pans out in 7.5 months since I couldn't wait to get to the grocery store last night for a bag of Doritos (which I promptly ate in the car and couldn't even wait until I got home) and then woke up this morning and had to have potato chips.

I think I'm having a boy. I'm 9 weeks pregnant and while most foods don't interest me, I am always willing to eat french fries. And for the last week I have gone to McDs for lunch EVERY SINGLE DAY- for a quarter pounder w/ cheese and a large fries!
And on the weekends we go for brunch at a nearby diner where I can get poached eggs on english muffin that I dump salt on and I have it with fries!

Oh, and in prepregnancy I loved sweets-now pregnant I have no interest in sweets. Seriously, on Father's Day I bought a cake from a nearby bakery that is my all time favorite. Couldn't even take a bite-just no appeal at all!

Well, the sweet and salty thing must mean I'm having twins as I now crave both! :p (and I'm only having one, a girl according to four ultrasounds). In the beginning of my pregnancy, it was mainly salty stuff, but as I progressed, a sweet tooth slowly became apparent. Its still not anything compared to some people I know, but I definitely want sweets more than I ever have in my life. More specifically, Ritas Italian Ice Gelatis! And I still crave salt too, BTW.

Asha

i can't say i particularly crave sweet or salty. i mostly crave milk products - chocolate milk, cereal with milk, quesadillas, mozzeralla and tomato sandwhiches, cheese and crackers, pizza, etc. probably explains why i am on the high end for weight gain.
