(Disclaimer: Wasn't sure if this belonged "Inside the Home" or "Outside the Home." If it needs to be moved, move away!)

Just out of curiosity:

1) How many cars does your garage hold?
2) How many cars do you actually park in your garage?

We have a three car, detached garage. Above it is an apt, and we let the apt have one of the garages, thus bringing our total to 2. We park ZERO cars in it. It's a bit of a sore subject for me.

we have a 2 car garage and we park both cars in there. many people seem to use garages as storage areas, which we don't get (most people have basements around here).

We have a 2 car garage, and we park one car in there, mine. DH uses the other part for his tools and storage and what not. However, we are moving at the end of the month and we plan to park both cars in there this time, as it has more room so we will still have some storage, but both cars....

We have a two-car garage, or I guess more technically, two one-car garages. We live in the city and while they're great to have -- street parking can be a nightmare -- they're TINY. I literally have about 1/2 inch to spare around my side mirrors when I back the car in (we have to back them in). So I had to vote "other" -- if we can find street parking, my car goes on the street; if we can't, it goes in the garage. It's only because of the size of the garage that we don't use it all the time. I grew up in a house where the garage was always used for both cars and would like to do the same. (DH's van always goes in the garage since he keeps musical equipment in it and it would be "inviting" a break-in to keep it on the street.)

One car garage. We still park in the driveway. We are using the garage for storage until we get a shed.

One-car garage and we park one in it (mine) so I don't have to shovel my car out in the winters. DD mostly goes in my car. DH uses the driveway for his car. We have pretty good storage in our townhouse (attic plus under the staircase) though not a basement. But I know that others in our complex never use their garage for cars.

We have 1 car in our 2 car garage because my dh won't get off his a$$ and clean it out. It's all his crap (then again, so is the car, and that isn't running at the moment), and I want my garage space!

We have a 1 car garage and park in the driveway.

Right now our garage is storing extra furniture that's too big to fit through the attic door and boxes that nobody wants to drag up there.

We have a 2 car garage and normally we park 2 cars in it. We've been doing a major house purge and have created a donation pile on one side where we are colleting all the outgoing stuff until we are finished with the cleaning and someone comes to pick it up. We started in February and are almost done, but since then, one car has been on the street. This isn't typical though, so I voted that we use the whole thing, which is almost always true.

We have a two car garage and park both of our cars in it. My husband has a real petpeeve about parking cars in the driveway. It's a point of pride for him that our garage is always neat and that we can easily put both of our cars in it. Boys are strange sometimes, huh?

We have a 2 car garage and only park one car in it. We could probably fit both cars in, but we have an extra fridge, lawnmower and other gardening tools that wouldn't fit if we parked both cars inside it!

We have a 3 car detached garage and we park 2 cars in it. We have cabinets all aorund for storage and in the part that we don't use for a car we have an extra fridge and our outdoor table and chairs.

We have a 2 car garage with 1 car parked in it. The other side is holding stuff for donation/garage sale. We don't have a basement and our attic is moldy ATM.

1) How many cars does your garage hold?
Two

2) How many cars do you actually park in your garage?
Two

I voted "other," though. We have a workbench area on the right hand side of our garage and a row of cabinets on the left hand side of our garage. There is also a storage rack in front of where we park our cars. It's pretty large and fits everything just fine, including our two cars. We try to keep it tidy and orderly. Like MLA's hubby, I don't like cars being parked in the driveway.

We have a 2 car garage and we park one car in it. DH's truck won't fit in the garage so I park my car in it and the other side is used for his poker tables and camping gear.

we have a one car garage. we usually don't park in there bc dh doesn't like to bc its hard to get in and out of it bc of being a very small one car garage and having a steep driveway. plus, its difficult to access the washer and dryer with a car parked inside. we clear it of the junk whenever we go out of town, so we do park our car in the garage at those times.

We have a 2 car garage. Several months ago I was the only one parking in there and then my DH was parking in front of our house. Then one night my DH's car got broken into right in front of our house so we decided to both start parking in the garage.

We have a two car garage, but it's really far away from the house. DH's old corvette is in there. We also have a one car carport attached to the house. That's where I park. DH parks in the driveway.

We have a 2 car garage that holds our 2 cars. We also have a work bench and the lawn mower/yard tools in there. That makes it kind of tight. One of the cars has to come out so we can get the mower out of there. Which is a pain, but we love having a garage for our cars. We'll probably get a smallish storage shed for yard stuff later on, but right now we're good.

We have a two car garage, but it was custom-built by the original owner to be extra long because he restored classic cars. You can fit another car in the back if it's parked sideways. DH built a large workbench and tool area, and we also have a freezer there. So, we keep both cars in the garage, but there's still a lot of room left over.

We had three cars until not long ago, and we plan to buy a third again eventually, but that one has to sit in the driveway.

2 car garage that we park 2 cars inside. Our old house had a one car garage that we did not park any cars inside. The layout did not allow us to both park cars and store our garage cans, lawn mower and other stuff. There was not a place to store that stuff outside so the cars were parked in the driveway.

We have a 2 car garage and use it for storage. We want to park our cars in it, but we have an odd situation...we don't have a driveway! The house and garage were built in the 20's and the garage is detached and at the back of the lot. The previous owner must have let the gravel driveway wash away because all we have are grassy ruts. Also, the garage still has the original doors (two sets of double-doors that swing open and have to be propped open to keep them from swinging closed again).

Now that we have most of our house projects done, the driveway and garage will be upgraded (paving the driveway and replacing the doors with modern-in-function-traditional-in-style garage doors)...hopefully before the end of the year.

We have a two car garage and park one car in it.

DH used to park his car in it, but he no longer does. Mostly because he gets home at 10pm every night and the garage door opening at that time wakes the kids (their rooms are just above the garage). On the weekends, I don't like him to park in the garage because my washing machine and dryer are on "his" side and if he's parked in there, it's terrible to try to get any laundry done. You have to sit on the hood of the car to reach and get the clothes out of the dryer.

We don't use our garage for much storage - just a few things (extra light bulbs, toilet paper, etc.) in the cabinets that hang on the walls, and our bikes hang from the ceiling above my car. We also don't have a basement or an attic, so we have to be pretty creative with our storage needs, but it works. We have a small storage shed in the backyard for our lawn mower and related stuff.

We have a two-car attached garage and we park two cars in it. We also have tools, shelves, our snowblower, lawn mower and other junk in there. I can't wait until we build our new house and we will have a three-car garage.

It always boggles my mind why the woman across the street (with two young children) allows her husband to keep so much crap in their garage. They also have a two-car attached garage, and they have three vehicles. None of them fit in the garage. One is on the grass next to the driveway (or on the road in summer when there are no winter parking regulations), and the other two vehicles are in the driveway. They also have a full basement and a shed. There is no way I'm scraping frost and brushing snow off my car in the morning (before trying to load my two children in the car for day care) when I have a perfectly wonderful garage.

My ILS have a very large two-car garage. FIL is a junk-picker (as we like to call him). Their entire garage is filled with stuff, so they park their three vehicles and boat on their long driveway. I just don't get it.

We have a one-car garage and don't park any cars in it. Right now it's full of boxes (we just moved in about 2 weeks ago) and we keep the treadmill and DH's weights out there too. Also, the garage door does not have an automatic opener yet, so it's not really convenient to put a car in it.

We have a two-car garage and park two cars in it. We're unusual on our street, though; in our neighborhood, none of the homes have attics or basements, so many of our neighbors use their whole garage for storage.

Our new home has a 3 car tandem (which was a new concept for me, one of the "spots" is directly in front of the other, so the frotn looks like a 2 car and then one side is deeper). We'll park both our cars in it and use the tandem portion for storage.

We have a two car garage, and park both of our cars in it. It's a spacious garage - we have two deep freezes in there as well as lots of tool storage. That's in addition to our shed in the back yard.

1) How many cars does your garage hold? Two

2) How many cars do you actually park in your garage? One - my car goes in the garage and DH's truck stays on the driveway. In Tucson, it is not common for homes to have usable attics or basements. So, Christmas stuff and other big boxed items have to go in closets, spare rooms, or the garage. At our house, it's the garage.

We have a two car garage and we park both cars in it every time, unless we want to play ping pong (the table is in the garage). :)

Our garage has a storage room as well, which holds our bikes, luggage, camping gear, etc. that would otherwise be in a garage.

We have a 2-car garage, but currently park both cars outside. I desperately want to use it for our cars, but that won't happen until we get a shed. Hopefully we'll get one this summer and move the lawn tractor, mower and other yard tools/equipment into it so our garage is free to house our cars.

We have a one car garage and only park my scooter in it. My truck's too tall to fit. It's a weird shape garage, wider then a normal one car, not wide enough for two cars, really low clearance on the garage door, but crazy deep. It's like it was built for a Cadillac stretch limo or something. We're using the vast empty space my scooter totally isn't taking up to store all our moving boxes w/o collapsing them. At least the next move will be easy. :p

Guess I should answer my own question:

We have a two-car attached garage, and we park both cars in there. We wish we would have made the garage oversized, because there's not much room in there for much else besides our cars, the garbage cans, and our dog's supplies. We can't even put a freezer out there without someone giving up a space. With DH having a Tahoe, he pretty much hogs up his whole side. Good thing I have a hatchback!

Storage space was very tight for us until we had a shed custom-built. We have an attic but no basement. DH is another one of those who's adamant about actually being able to put cars in the garage. It's weird, though; we're among the minority of our neighbors who park 2 cars in a 2-car garage. Our next-door neighbors can only fit one in theirs, and that's on a good day. Same with my ILs. If I ever have that much junk, just shoot me. :)

We have a three car *tandem* garage. It is long enough to fit three cars bumper to bumper, obviously not convenient. I used to park in it, but the garage door broke and we have yet to repair it. We have a large cement pad behind our house so we park on it. No one can see our cars from the street.

When we move to our new house next month, it'll have a 2.5 car and we are looking forward to being able to park both cars in it.

Is it just me or do they not make garages as big as they used to? Growing up we could fit all the # of cars we had spaces for, plus have a storage & work area. I miss oversized garages.

I voted other. We have a huge garage and a bunch of stuff in there. It has two "garage doors" but a ton of space. Currently we have 1 car, 3 golfcarts, 2 motorcycles, and a whole slew of big game fish tackle and other pool items.

At my parents' house, the previous owners added an attached 2.5-car garage. You could not only fit both cars in there, all passengers could also actually GET OUT of the car in the garage. The way our garage is now, the passenger has to get out before the car is pulled in. Even the driver doesn't have a ton of room. We also had a workbench spanning the whole end of the garage, and plenty of room on one side for bikes and whatnot.

When we had our current house built, that was about the size I was expecting. Boy, was I in for a shock.

we have a 2 car garage, and we park both cars in it. for about a month only one car got the privilege as the other half was storing some stuff from our old place, but my husband got that cleaned out about a week ago.

it is narrower than my inlaws 2 car, though - they have tonnes of room to store things. we have things stored, but it makes for a tight squeeze.

We have an oversized 1-car garage, so have our (only) car in there, plus the lawnmower, gardening stuff, and random house renovating junk piled in it. When we moved in, it didn't have an automatic garage door, just a swinging carriage-type door. Putting in a real garage door was a priority for us - it gets very cold here in the winter, and parking our car in there means we don't have to shovel all the snow off, scrape the windows, and warm the car up :)

We have a 3 car attached garage and plan to build an additional 2 car detached garage with extra storage and workshop area. We do have 3 cars and a riding mower in the garage as well as a bunch of storage stuff--only one of the stalls is used for a "mobile" car--the other two stalls are storing DH's "babies" so we just have stuff packed around them. ;) If they were driven on a daily basis we'd have less storage space.

03-16-2007, 02:50 PM
We have a 2 car attached, but only park my car in it. DH has it organized, and could park his truck in it if he wanted to, but there isn't much clearance between the top of his truck and the door, so he just doesn't want to chance it. Plus he always has ladders, or ladder racks, or soemthign fo that nature on it for work, so it would be our luck it would catch when he pulled out, so we just don't chance it.

We have a 2-car garage, but only own one car. We really don't use the garage for storage right now, so our car has lots of room to spread out :D. We do plan to move much of our junk from our basement to our garage this summer, though.

ETA: We do not have a driveway. Our garage is detached with an alley entrance and the only other parking option would be street parking. Not an attractive option in the city, so we will always make room the car(s) in our garage.

We have a two-car garage that barely fits our cars... I think they would fit better if our landlady hadn't IMO stupidly decided to put a workbench on one side that cuts into a good portion of the space for one car. The only other thing that's in the garage is the sealed plastic bin we keep the dog's food in.

We have a two-car garage and we park both cars in it. I voted other because we also have two plastic kiddie pools, a lawn mower, a tool chest and a couple boxes-o-crap in there...plus a 13-gallon trash can that is empty and some other crud that could probably just be thrown away at this point. So, we do have storage space (barely), but it doesn't cut into our parking spaces. The only time we park outside is in the afternoon after school because we block the sidewalk so the kids next door don't ride on it (they cut across our grass when they ride on the sidewalk...plus we don't want them falling and getting hurt on our property because it opens us up to a lawsuit).

We have 2 garages, so I voted other. We have a 2 car attached to the house that we park my car in. Then DH has a 3 car "toy" garage that he parks his truck, jeep, 4 wheeler, etc and all his shop stuff in.

Our attached garage could fit 2 cars, but not the car and the truck, even if it had nothing else in it. It is definitely smaller than old garages used to be.

We have a two-car garage with one car parked in it. As soon as we get rid of some furniture (waiting for ILs to pick it up), then I should be able to get everything organized enough to put both cars in it. Unfortunately, we only have the power opener on one door. :o

Is it just me or do they not make garages as big as they used to?

I think they used to be bigger too. My grandfather's basement garage was huge. He had like 3 lawnmowers, plus his big honking 1964 Impala in there. Then when my aunt moved in with her kids and their cars/bikes, they got her 80 something Grand Prix and 2 bikes in there. And there was still plenty of room to walk around. It's nuts. Our garage is a lot smaller than that, but it's bigger than the ones we saw on the newer construction homes. DH was adamant about wanting a garage with 2 separate doors rather than one big one.

CapeCod04
03-26-2007, 04:06 PM
It would fit one - but....it's filled with man toys. There's the monster snow blower that could do the street as well as a plow. The leaf blower for the yard with two medium sized trees - that we will probably cut down this year. The lawn mower I can't complain much about - but I seriously think we could have done with a push mower. There's the welder and the tool box and lord knows what else. My car? Not as important as man toys.

We have an oversized attached 2-car garage, 3 cars and none of them parked in the garage. DH uses the space for various things. It is clean and organized ALL.THE.TIME. and we could park both cars in there on any given day.

DH uses the garage as his "man space". He spends the majority of his time out there. He has a workbench on one side, storage shelves on the opposite side and a computer "work bench" on the wall attached to the house. He is constantly doing something out there. He works on cars, computers, wood working, etc. If we parked our cars in there, he wouldn't have his space to "play".

Our winters aren't bad compared to others, so it doesn't bother me at all.

DH can't wait to move in 2 years - not only we will have an oversized attached 2-car garage to actually park our cars in, but he will have a 30ft. by 15ft. shop for his "man space". :D

We have a 2-car garage and park two cars in it. We also store our skis and golf clubs out there, and have one set of shelves with some crap on them: gardening stuff, holiday decorations, the cooler, etc. The garage is pretty crammed. It *just* fits the two cars (seriously, there's only about 12 inches between them), and the rest of the stuff is jammed around the edges.
