I don't have any problem with what Chris said. It was a nice sentiment. But it's not like he transitioned from answering Simon's question to saying that. He just stuck it in there. I think he did that because he wanted to make sure he had a chance to say it, but I can understand why people think it sounded awkward.

Rickey.org puts up audio and video. Sometimes it's just one or the other, though, for certain performers.

I agree... the contestants know they only have so much time to talk after their performances, and I think Chris realized he'd be cut off soon, so he just decided to say something about VTech right then and there.
Although, "nasally" is a style I don't much enjoy, I must admit. ;)
I really enjoyed Jordin's performance, and for once, I was engaged by Melinda's performance. Typically, I notice Melinda's always excellent voice, but this time, I enjoyed watching her as well. I think she looks better with longer hair.
Phil was really good, but his teeth always distract me. ;) Plus, he's so pasty that he looks somewhat emaciated to me.
I think my favorite performance of the night was Jordin's.

Phil--awful--FF right away
Jordin--loved it--I really love this girl
Sanjaya--awful, awful, awful--FF
LaKisha--agreed that she was shouting the end--FF the very last of it--she's really been disappointing me
Chris--awful, nasally--FF--I can't believe he said he was nasal on purpose
Melinda--I actually liked it, even though it wasn't her best & it was too country for me--I thought she did a good job
Blake--I thought he was pitchy and sounded bad--totally disagreed with the judges--didn't FF because I kept waiting for it to get better and it didn't
Bottom 3: Phil, Sanjaya, Chris, with Chris going home (although I wish Sanjaya would already)
I absolutely agree. I thought Blake was way pitchy and some of his notes actually hurt my ears.
For the first time in a long time, my DH, a music educator, watched the show with me. He said that Melinda and Jordin are the only decent performers on the show...and quite frankly I agree with him. Blake is cute and can dance, but I just don't care for his voice.

eta: Chris' "nasal" singing sounded just like the lead singer of Rascal Flatts, in my opinion! I think that he was trying to imitate him and did a good job at it.
When they said Chris was singing "Mayberry" it finally dawned on me who he reminds me of: Gary LeVox, RF's lead singer. I've been trying to figure out all season who he sounds like, and though he sings a different genre of music, Chris sounds like Gary. I think Paula was a bit off with her comment about him sounding good and being able to sing any genre of music. Though I think he sounded like Gary LeVox, I still wasn't crazy about his overall performance.
I wasn't so crazy about Jordin's version of "Broken Wing," but it's hard for anyone to sound better than Martina. The only Idol who's ever done Martina well, IMO, was Carrie Underwood. Jordin was good; not great.
Phil, surprisingly, did well last night. I was surprised when he said he wanted a career in country music. Then why hasn't he shown it until now???
LaKisha sucked. Her lisp was very apparent during "Jesus Take the Wheel." Not good.
I didn't like Blake much. I'm not too crazy about "Stars go Blue" in the first place, so that could have something to do with it. I think the judges gave him more credit than he deserved last night.
Melinda was pretty good, but I have no idea where she found that song. She said it was new, but I've never heard of it or the artist, and I listen to country music all the time. Martina said she'd never heard it either. She just annoys me.
Sanjaya:  eta: Would he stop hiding his hands inside his shirts? Every time he meets with artists to go over songs for the week, his hands are inside his sleeves. Button the damn buttons so they stay where they're supposed to be.
******
I measure my "wow" factor in goosebumps, and I haven't had any all season long. This season of AI sucks. (Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry have given me plenty of goosebumps in the past.)
I hate when the singers argue with Simon. It seems so wasteful. C'mon - you INTENDED to be nasally? Unless you're playing Adelaide or Audrey on Broadway, no one wants to be nasal. Lots of people are, but no one wants to be nasal.
I would've appreciated it if he just said after the criticism, "Sorry you feel that way, but I really want to acknowledge VT" etc. Arguing and then switching like that was very disjointed.

Some Country music is "nasally". People may not do it on purpose, but it just happens.
If I was on stage under pressure wanting to extend love to families, I would have done the same thing Chris did without even thinking.

Yeah but we have to remember that he's a young guy with no television experience who's now on a live show. I'm sure he has no idea how to properly handle situations like this. He wanted to say something so he just spit it out. I think if Ryan or a seasoned performer had done it like he did, there might be cause for question. But Chris really seemed genuine and I think he did the best he could. Who cares how it came out, he sent well wishes and I think all of the people at VT can use all of the prayers and love anyone can send them.

Regarding Simon eyerolling -
The morning DJs that I listen to went to the taping last night and were talking about this. They said that Simon was talking to Paula and wasn't really listening to what Chris was saying. They were discussing that Chris thought that 'nasally' was a form of singing which is what Simon rolled his eyes at.
Simon put a statement out saying that he was horrified after watching the show back at how it went down.
The DJs said that he is telling the truth and that he asked Paula after Chris went with Ryan what he had said and looked really upset when she told him. That is why he added that part in after offering their sympathies.

American Idol.com (http://www.americanidol.com/news/view/?pid=704)
"This is a sad time for everyone, so it is especially disheartening that a quick camera cutaway could have been misinterpreted. We're sorry for any grief caused by this misunderstanding, but Simon was not reacting to Chris at that point. He had turned to speak to Paula and didn't actually hear Chris' final comments. Everyone at "American Idol" feels compassion for those affected by this tragedy. We opened the show with those thoughts and Simon later expressed sincere condolences on behalf of the judges, recognizing the challenges we all face in dealing with this horrible event."

Nice of AI to put out that statement.
Agree with kam and futuremrslp. Sure, he's a kid, but he's not an idiot...he's been doing this for awhile now. If he really wanted to express those feelings, why didn't he say something right after he finished his song, or before the judges started offering comments? To say it immediately after Simon had just totally slammed him--especially as he was "talking back" to Simon with his "nasally" comments--came across to me as insincere.
Of course, he's always come across to me as smarmy and insincere, so maybe I'm projecting a little.

Awesome. Now I can really watch without being irritated.
My picks for the rest of the season:
1 - Melinda
Love her more than any other Idol contestant EVER! She is just at a whole different level.
2 - Jordin
Very talented, fun to watch. :D
3 - Blake
HOT. And his singing has a lot of style (although last night stunk).
4 - Lakisha
Great voice, but I find her a bit boring.
5 - Phil
Blech. Funny looking.
6 - Chris
I really do not like him. He makes my ears hurt. I hope he or Phil are gone next week.
I think it would be fun if Melinda and Blake were in the top two. They would be fun to watch together.

I had a feeling that Lakisha would be in the bottom 3, but surprise by Blake.
IMO, Chris R. was saved from the bottom 3 because of the VA Tech sympathy. He is so darn sweet and I think people genuinely felt bad for him on Tues night. I hope he does better next week because he is a cutie although I don't think his voice will let him go much farther in this competition now that Sanjaya is gone.
So, what is next week's Theme?

DH and I watched it together last night. I should mention that DH supported Vote for the Worst, much to my annoyance and had actually cast votes for Sanjaya in the past. He kept insisting, even last night, that Sanjaya would be in the Final Three. He got very quiet once Sanjaya was put into B3...but we both still felt it would be Lakisha going home. (and OMG...totally shocked that Blake was in there!) When Ryan said that Sanjaya was leaving, I screeched right into DH's face and did the happy dance. :D I'm still in shock today that he is actually gone and we can now try to salvage the rest of the season. Thank goodness! And call me mean, but I didn't feel the least bit of sympathy for Sanjaya. I felt like he was literally making a mockery of the show over the past few weeks, as evidenced by his cocky, smarmy grins and attitude that nobody could touch him. He should have gone weeks ago..if he had, then maybe he would have gotten a bit of sympathy out of me. (damn..I'm mean! :p )
I had to add this comment made my DH. I had actually DVR'd Tuesday's performance show, so we watched that and the elimination shows back to back. When DH got a look at the dress that Jordin wore on Tuesday, his immediate comment was "WTF....that dress looks a giant fruit roll-up!". I nearly went into hysterics, it was so darn off the cuff and I hadn't mentioned everyone here comparing it to a garbage bag to him ahead of time, so his reaction was knee-jerk and totally funny. :D
Off to celebrate the fact that we are now Sanjaya-free!! Woohoo!!! :D

I hate when they make the top person choose between the two groups. Come on, now. Don't put a person in that position. I'm glad Melinda just sat there and refused!

I was surprised to see Blake in the bottom 3. He doesn't do it for me like some others do, but I realize he's usually pretty darn good. This week, though, I thought he did a very poor job.
I really thought Chris would be the other bottom 3 person and had a good chance of going home, based on his performance. Maybe he got some sypathy votes because of his ties to VT. Maybe people actually liked his nasally singing.

I thought the "other than hair line" was funny the first time he did it. He could have probably left out the second and third repetitions and gone back to the original lyrics, though...it lost the BWAH factor.
Oh, and I was so verklempt at Melinda's huge mommylike hug of LaKisha and then Blake wiping away her tears. How sweet was that? I really hope LaKisha starts bringing it again. I agree. I'm so glad he's gone, but I can't help but feel bad for him. I think his cocky attitude is just a cover for the hurt he really feels. He's a young, seemingly-immature kid. I think the thing with Melinda is that she's so technically perfect. She never hits a sour note, she knows how to put the right emphasis in the correct spot, form her vowels, etc, etc, but I agree that on stage she isn't as exciting as some of the others.
My personal fave has become JORDIN! She's got such great stage presence and seems soooo sweet & bubbly.

I get what people are saying about Melinda - I think part of it is that she's SO perfect that there's no expectation when she sings - you know she'll do everything exactly right and thus there's no suspense.
It's hard to root for the 'best' - when you've got others who have that chance to shock you with a surprisingly good performance.
I like Melinda - she's my fave because she's the best - so I don't penalize her for that... but I can see where some think she's boring - but the thing is, she's got star power to last her a lifetime - not pop AI power - but REAL, patti labelle, anita baker star power.
I also like Lakisha and Jordin - Jordin because she's so young and cute ... I just HOPE that if she wins, she doesn't succumb to pressure to get all thin - she looks great the way she is.

Whoever said the group song was one of the better ones was right. I was fully expecting the suckage of Baliamos but got instead something cute and entertaining. I could even stomach Sanjaya during it. :p

We just watched last night. I admit it, I felt bad for Sanjaya. He is just a kid after all. That being said, I'm so glad he's finally gone!
I was very surprised Blake was in the bottom 3 instead of Chris. I didn't like either one of their performances, but I figured Blake was a fan fave over Chris. Guess not!
I also liked the group performance, but I've always liked that song. DH who hates country was rolling his eyes and just being generally annoying during the whole thing.

There was a commercial...they were all trying to steal a suitcase. Sanjaya ended up with it and inside it was a key. Then they all showed up around him. Kind of mission impossible.

Jordan and Melinda are my faves. While I do think Melinda has more "staying" power I think Jordan would "fit" in more if that makes sense. Either way I think they are both amazing and would be happy if either of them would win.

There's no way Chris and Phil got more votes than Blake!
Actually, given the performances and events of this week's show, I honestly wouldn't be a bit surprised if both Chris and Phil scored more votes than Blake. As far as Phil goes; he absolutely nailed his song. It was a great choice, he showed real personality and flair and got high praise from the judges. Easily his best performance of the season and probably resulted in his highest vote count of the season as well. Chris...I know many people in this thread bashed his performance of Mayberry. But I have to tell you that not only did I find the performance "okay", my DH, who hardly ever watches, saw that performance and said that he sounded better than the original version of the song. He was honestly shocked that the judges raked him over the coals the way they did. So, going on his reaction and assuming that perhaps the American public agreed with that opinon and then throw in some sympathy votes for that whole Virginia Tech/Simon debaucle and I think its quite feasible that he beat Blake out on votes. And...I personally found Blake boring and bland this week. I hated that song and his performance of it was weak at best, I don't think it was a stand-out compared to some of his previous performances . In retrospect, I don't think he had a chance given the drama surrounding the other contestants.

I didn't see that either. But I have a feeling the producers probably stepped in. I know a ton of people who vote for Sanjaya every week just because Howard Stern tells them too, and then add in the people who actually like him. I just don't think he really got voted off.

04-23-2007, 12:22 PM
It is going to be a regular elimination week, but the show is going to be a little different. For one, it is not going to be live on Tuesday. From what I've read, they are going to tape it on Monday or Tuesday morning for broadcast on Tuesday night. This has something to do with the fact that the contestants are all going to be singing longer versions of their songs than they normally would at this point and they need to make sure they don't go over the hour allotted for Tuesday's show.
The two mega surprise guest stars who duet together are rumored to be Celine Dion and Elvis. Celine apparently sings with the real Elvis through the technology that allows one to do this. Someone leaked this because apparently it has already been taped for broadcast on Wednesday.

Is 'My Heart will go On' an inspirational song? I'd love to see IF Jordin could pull that off.
I don't know how they are picking the songs. The mentor isn't confirmed but based on that he wrote a song for the idols to perform on Wed. people are saying it's Quincy Jones.
According to FutonCritic (http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=20070423fox01) the theme is now "Life Anthem" songs.

I agree. Just about every story I've read about her indicates that she was met with some very hardcore skeptacism by many people in the music industry after winning Idol. Most didn't believe she would amount to much of anything; at the least, a one-hit-wonder, at the most, a one-album wonder. She worked really, really hard to dispel that belief and so much of it wasn't even under her control anyway. (as far as whether or not fans would buy her albums, concert tix, etc.) I think she had it the roughest out of any Idol, simply because she was the first. And I don't particularly blame her for maybe not wanting to return to the show. But...in the name of charity? Thats a whole different kettle of fish. She would look bad if she didn't show.
Kelly also has a new album to promote.

I loved Blake. *sigh* It's a gorgeous song and he did a great job.
Chris did well. I like the sound of his voice.
I thought Melinda did a nice rendition of There Will Come a Day. It was just weird for me cause I'm SO used to hearing Faith sing it. She looks so pretty with her hair longer. It's nice that Simon is on her for not looking so surprised anymore. It's helped a lot.
I didn't like Lakisha singing that song but I also think it's a terrible song. She needs to stop singing past Idol winners' songs. It's not working. I've actually been really disappointed with her. I LOVED her at the beginning but it feels like she lost some real momentum after Diamonds Are Forever and she hasn't picked it back up yet. I really think it might be her week to go.
Phil. Wow. I love the song he sang and he gave me chills. It's nice that he's not wearing those tacky hats anymore. I think he is really redeeming himself.
Jordin is fantastic! I can't believe she's only 17. She has a beautiful voice.
My predictions:
Top 3: Chris, Jordin, Phil
Bottom 3: Lakisha, Melinda, Blake
(Chris and Melinda could be switched, that's a tough call)
With Lakisha going home.

WTF is Randy smoking? Blake's song gave me chills!
I loved Blake's song. My Dad didn't like it because Imagine is his favorite song and he compared it to John Lennon's version. I thought it was one of Blake's better vocal even if performance wise it was very mellow.
I thought Jordin was good and maybe I just didn't like the song but it wasn't THAT good.
I am ready for Phil to go home.
Lakisha is disappointing me. She started the competition out so strong but week after week she makes bad song choices.

Oy - Last night was fairly boring. Plus - WTF was up with making this big ol announcement about Bono and then nothing about him working with the contestants??? That was a major letdown for me.
Rankings -
1. Melinda - The best - everything. Control, emotion, presence. She has IT.
2. Jordin - Not nearly as good as Melinda. Her glory notes were strained and she had to really push for that glory note at the end, you could hear it. Plus, I hated the song - Blech.
3. Phil - He is the best vocalist of the remaining guys. I was glad to see he maintained control on the big notes.
4. Chris - He did better than I expected with this song. I liked it.
5. LaKiki - Awful. The song itself should be banned forever and while I was thankful she didn't sound like a cat getting pulled through the wringer like Fantasia, she shouted her way through it very unpleasantly.
6. Blake - I don't see it. His lipless mouth and dead eyes are not cute to me and and his bland singing is boring. His voice has a very very limited range.

Peachy- I agree with you!
WTF is up with this 'new Blake?' He started out beat-boxing, giving us fresh takes on old stuff, etc. Last night he was snooze-worthy. Imagine? There is just no way to make that clunker 'entertaining.' Didn't Lennon write that while on an acid trip? Well, at any rate, I hated it. This new Blake is not going to survive much longer imo.
Lakiki made another bad song choice and didn't do anything for herself. Easily my favorite at the start, I am really thinking she's going this week.
Richardson - Well, even though (as someone on the FORT pointed out) he didn't really pick an inspirational song (the song is about a man who is in love with a woman who isn't in love with him,) he was at LEAST entertaining.
Phil - What's happening? I actually like him now! He doesn't creep me out anymore. I'm scaring myself! ;) I think I liked his song choice best of all, and I don't even really like Garth Brooks. Again - scaring myself!
Melinda - Awesome, per usual. Has lost the 'who me?' expression and is only getting better and better every week. My only beef with her is that she usually picks songs I've never heard before. Last week she even picked a song that the mentor had never heard before! I hope she picks something 'popular' next week so that I can rock out to her performance :)
Jordin - Not NEARLY as good as the judges told her she was, but her real tears during the song were touching. I think TPTB want Jordin to win, or come in 2nd, so they are not going to criticize her unless she really blows it.
Sanjaya - Another bland performance where he ran around the stage, not hitting any notes, in a goofy outfit/hairdo. What's that? He's not on anymore? Oh, that's why my ears didn't hurt this week. ;)

I don't like Melinda for some reason. LaKisha is getting worse. I love Jordin. Phil's good, but he won't win. Chris is o.k., but he won't win. Blake is getting worse.

At first, I thought "There Will Come a Day" WAS pretty popular, but I asked DH, a country fan, if he'd ever heard the song before, and he said no. It was the last song on Faith Hill's "Breathe" album, which I own. So it was fairly modern, at least. I'd heard it before, anyway. :) And Melinda definitely put her own twist on the song. Didn't sound much like Faith, but she made it more of a gospel song. Rock on, Melinda!
Sanjaya - Another bland performance where he ran around the stage, not hitting any notes, in a goofy outfit/hairdo. What's that? He's not on anymore? Oh, that's why my ears didn't hurt this week. ;)
LOL!
Okay, now for my thoughts about last night:
Chris R--I just don't see it. What was so good about his singing? I can't get past the nasal tone. He'd be my pick to leave tonight.
Melinda--definitely liking the longer hair on her. Impeccable as always.
Blake--did the song okay. I flinched on his first high note, but he seemed to modify himself on the second one so he didn't have to go so high, and it still sounded okay. I've just never liked "Imagine," though, so it was hard for me to get into it.
LaKisha--I don't remember Fantasia's version of this song, but I did wince when she said that she was doing it. Another former Idol's song. Eek. I thought she actually did a nice job on it. But I do think she's in danger tonight.
Phil--turning himself around big time. Great song choice for him.
Jordin--loved her! That's about all I need to say. :)

I didn't think much of last night's show. (But I was glad to be able to watch without seeing Sanjaya butcher something!)
Chris: Blah...I don't like him at all. I think he should go.
Melinda: Predictable but good. Nothing amazing.
Blake: Okay.
Lakisha: I thought she sounded really good. Thought the judges were a little hard on her.
Phil: Loved him last night. I thought he was the best. Because it was for charity I voted for him 20 times. :)
Jordin: Okay, the song she sang, "You'll Never Walk Alone" is a song from the musical Carousel which is one of my favorites. I thought the version she sang was HORRIBLE and she didn't even sing it that well either. I was excited when I heard she was singing that, but very disappointed in her version. That is a very beautiful song but she didn't do it any justice IMO.
I'm hoping for Chris to go home tonight.

Not a great night in my opinion. I think Simon is being nice because the show is pushing the charity aspect(which is awesome imho). But the performances were not great.
1. Chris...everything sounds the same. I just don't like him. He is very difficult to hear and understand sometimes.
2. Melinda...she is an incredible performer. You may not like her surprise looks(my dh sure hates them). But she has incredible stage presence. You can't teach that, but you can try to improve on it. She knows how to enunciate and how to grab your attention, even in songs that you have not heard.
3. Phil...he should have made that song sound more country and it would have been better. He sounded good last night though.
4. Lakisha...yuck. Just yuck. She has lost it. I think this time away from her family and child is really wearing her out.
5. Blake...I think Imagine is a beautiful song (I know some of you disagree). thought he was blah. Just blah. And his mouth bugs me. I wonder if being in the bottom 3 last week is playing with his mind.
6. Jordin...I did not hear the same thing the judges did last night. She was pitchy and having problems with the big notes. Really big problems according to my ears. I love that song...it really is insprirational and very moving in the musical Carousel. I still voted for her though, I think she was better than that performance last night.
I tried voting for 2 hours. I got thru on Melinda once, Jordin once & never could get thru on Phil. I am ready for either Lakisha or Chris to go home.

Re: Jordin...I'm wondering if she was sick last night. Immediately I noticed that I could hear a raspy intake of breath every time, which I don't remember ever hearing from her before. I've played that role and sung that song (the traditional, soprano way), and while I like her voice I didn't love her take on the song. If she wasn't so emotional and such a passionate performer, it would have fallen flat.

YES!!!! I even made DH watch, and he HATES AI, because we are such huge U2 fans. I was so disappointed. PLEASE tell me Bono will be on tonight?!?
Melinda - She's still #1 for me. She just has a completely different presence on stage, so confident, such a great voice.
Jordin - Another great voice
Phil - Wow! I never really liked Phil all that much, but he was AMAZING last night.
Blake - Yes, Blake's song gave me chills, but I think most of it was the song choice. I like his style, but he's no where near the same vocal talent as some of the others.
Lakisha - Yuck. I happen to like the Fantasia version, so I was looking forward to comparing Lakisha, because I think she has a better voice technically, but she did not pull it off.
Chris - ARGH. Why is still on the show, and why do the judges luuuurve him? His voice is awful, he sings off-key, and he looks smarmy. I really hope he goes home tonight.

I really like Lakisha from the beginning but the last 2 weeks her song choices have been horrible. She just doesnt seem to have the fire she did in the beginning. It is very familar of Mandisa from last season. I am just disappointed in her.

Re: Jordin...I'm wondering if she was sick last night. Immediately I noticed that I could hear a raspy intake of breath every time, which I don't remember ever hearing from her before.
Now that you mentioned it, it did sound like maybe she was sick. I noticed the raspiness of her voice as well, even when she was singing some of the notes. But I'll disagree with most of the posters so far in that I thought she was WONDERFUL. Her song and the way she sang it made me cry, so I rewound it to watch it again and cried again. Maybe it's just PMS, but I think she is awesome and every week she gets better.
Phil is my #2 pick for the week. All the others bore me to tears and I FF through most of them then listen to the judges. If they said the song choice/vocals were good, I go back and listen to the whole song. I hated Blake singing "Imagine", although I like the song he sucked.
Lakisha could very well be on her way home tonight, which is sad. She was really on a roll in the begining but has really slowed down and chosen some terrible songs. Melinda is a great singer, but IMO she's boring.
Chris R is annoying, and he's constantly on the news here. Whoop-dee-doo! Send him home already so I can watch regular news.

I can not even hold myself together. These stories are just gut wrenching. And the most horrible thing is, it does not have to be this way. There is so much wealth in the US and all these kids need is lousy $4 worth of medicine. That poor baby who did not make it in time to the clinic just destroyed me.

Is anyone else having problems getting the IdolAid page to show? I've tried to get to it two different ways and keep getting "page not found".
I was having the same problem. I finally got on and put in all my info then hit submit, then I got the same "page not found" error so I'm not sure my donation went through.
I've been trying to call the hotline to donate that way also but have been getting a busy signal the whole time. I'm having a harder time getting through then I usually do to vote.

Ditto! I was very upset they did that too her. She seriously looked devastated at the thought of going home. :( I don't think she knew ahead of time at all. She wouldn't have reacted that way.
Did anyone see her (Jordin) rip that tissue right out of Lakisha's hand when Lakisha was trying to wipe Jordin's tears away? I thought it was hilarious!!! :p
Scary that they are sending TWO home next week though!!!
Anyone else think that was a pretty major mind game they just played at Jordin's expense? Thinking she just got voted off could really mess with her confidence moving forward.
yes, i did think that was pretty mean to do that to her. i also think it affected the way she sang the last group song. her performance seemed off in that song, imo.
i think phil is getting better and better. i thought he did an excellent job in the group performances. his voice seemed really strong to me.
i was disappointed with a lot of the guest performers. i really loved the josh grobin performance, mainly bc the kids in the african children's choir were so beautiful and cute. i thought it was weird that the singers were performing in a different location.
the reason celine looked like a hologram was bc i believe she was also a hologram. that performance was taped, and i don't think she came to the set to do her performance. both elvis and celine were holograms.
i thought the clips of the children/families in africa were moving, but i don't think they did such a good job of portraying the need of children in america. yes, it may not be as extreme of a situation as those in africa, but there are heart wrenching stories of children in the u.s., and i wish they had better portrayed that. overall, i think it was a great thing they did, and it raised a ton of money for those in need.

And Bono.....on for the last 3 minutes of the show?!?!?!?!?! Now that is crap too. Ditto - I don't think he worked with them on their individual songs either. It was wierd to see him with such short hair though.
I thought the Jack Black bit was WICKED funny though. Oh yell yeah! That was my fave part of the whole show - especially when he told Ryan to get away. I can't remember his exact words but it was hilarious. And then when Randy turned to Seal and asked him what he thought, I lost it. It was good there was some lighthearted stuff in the show.
i think phil is getting better and better. i thought he did an excellent job in the group performances. his voice seemed really strong to me. I too, thought Phil sounded really good on the group vocal. I also noticed how he and Blake seemed to have the most "solos" (that song sucked royally though. )
i thought the clips of the children/families in africa were moving, but i don't think they did such a good job of portraying the need of children in america. yes, it may not be as extreme of a situation as those in africa, but there are heart wrenching stories of children in the u.s., and i wish they had better portrayed that. overall, i think it was a great thing they did, and it raised a ton of money for those in need. I was hoping to see more about the plight of kids in need in the US as well. The N.O. parts and Eastern KY parts were good but I was hoping to see more about the Navajo nation and the visit they mentioned on Tuesday night. The living condition of the Native American people and reservations in general is far too often glossed over in favor of a more "popular" need group. But for years the needs of reservations and their people have been neglected in a shameful way. You always hear charity groups talk about the importance of education and awareness to the plight of the poor and I think it would have been great for AI to bring some awareness to the general public about the situation of our own Native Americans.

About Jordin...
I saw Melinda give Ryan a sly wink after he told her he was safe. After Chris was told he was safe, Jordin didn't look pained - she was almost beaming actually. Then, the group huddle after Jordin was told she was safe looked awkward. Blake looked up a couple of times and looked around.... I think Jordin's tears were fake. I think during the group huddle they added tears to add some drama to the show.
Just sayin'...

I was very moved by all the stories, but I thought the show was really lame. They have hyped up this show for weeks with all these STAR PERFORMANCES. Yes there were some stars but they were taped and in different location, or on for a total of 30 seconds. I think they could have done a better entertaining show for 2 hours.
This show did make me feel how blessed me and my family really have it. I am so lucky to have a heathly daughter that has access to education and health care. For that alone, I made a donation even if the show was lame.
Other notables....
Kelly Clarkson - Great voice but she has put on the weight. That mu mu of a dress. Yuck!!!
Josh Grobin - He was fab. I thought the best of the night.
The other performances was just Eh!!! The Ceine/Elvis duo kind of gave me the creeps. Let the poor man rest in peace for God Sakes!!!
Last but not least, I am not sure if the idols knew they were all safe. Parts of it say they knew and some didnt. If Jordin can cry like that on the spot than she is a very good actress. They should have just said it from the begining but then I guess some people would have turned the TV off. I guess it intices us to stay on for 2 hours.
Ok.. My rant was long enought!!!

Same thing happened to me last night. I had only made a small donation anyway so I decided to call in a second donation just in case the first didn't go through. I actually made a slighly higher donation the second time. On the hotline they say they will e-mail you a reciept. Well this morning I have a receipt but it is for the amount that I tried to process on-line. So I'm not sure if that means that I will be getting a second receipt sometime today for the amount I donated over the phone. Not really sure.
So to answer your question it appears that the donation I did on-line did go through even though I got the same error message when I hit submit.
You know really they didn't have this whole donation process set up to go very smoothly. They should have known that there would be a huge response and had sufficant lines set up to do so. It's kinda frustrating.

I thought last night was a total snore. I TiVo'd it and only watched the footage from NOLA and the last 15 minutes. I had no interest in watching a telethon.
I found it incredibly infuriating that Allstate sponsored the footage of NOLA. Maybe if they would actually honor some of their policies down here, and/or be fair in paying claims, things would be a little farther along in rebuilding. It's so insulting that the company has been so shady in the aftermath of Katrina, then do these PR things like sponsoring Idol or the Sugar Bowl, to make it look like they care so much about New Orleans and Louisiana.

I thought the performances were super lame. I disliked all the performers except Annie Lennox (who was pretty awesome). I was waiting for a REAL Carrie Underwood performance (not just dubbed over her Africa footage), Gwen, Bono, all the cool people that were hyped leading up to the event.
i thought the clips of the children/families in africa were moving, but i don't think they did such a good job of portraying the need of children in america. yes, it may not be as extreme of a situation as those in africa, but there are heart wrenching stories of children in the u.s., and i wish they had better portrayed that.
I agree with this. I think they wimped out. Showing true poverty in America is too politicized, so they didn't bother. Showing a mother who can't work due to untreated (and uninsured) mental illness or diabetes would be a criticism of our lack of a national healthcare system. Showing the true conditions of some of these inner city schools (sewage backed up into the bathrooms, or buildings that look condemned) would be a criticism of our lack of education spending for the poorest school districts. How about a family that lives out of their car? How about a kid whose only meals each day are those served at school (and God bless him when summer comes and school is out)?
There are people in America who are lacking a lot more than books and toys, and I didn't feel they really showed that. I do have to give them credit for visiting the L.A. food bank, but I wish they would have shown some of the individuals who depend on that food and told their stories.

The Elvis/Celine thing creeped me out. It just seemed disrespectful and weird. I can't imagine why the Presley family would approve this (I'm assuming that AI would have needed permission from them to use Elvis' image like that).
And what was the deal with Bono? I thought he was supposed to be 'coaching' the contestants. Instead, he barges into their rehearsal for 30 seconds, and tells them "boy, you just murdered that one", or something like that. Nice.

Lakeisha was patting her kleenex on Jordin's face, and Jordin grabbed it out of her hand. The expression on Jordin's face was priceless though, like she was annoyed but you could tell she was playing. It was cute.
I was really pissed that they made it seem like Jordin was going home. What a ton of emotion to put on her for nothing. I would have bawled as much as she did thinking I was leaving.
Last night was kinda boring. I really hated to FF through most of it. I loved the African Choir though, so so cute and they sounded great. I kinda wished Josh would have just shut up and let them sing the whole song.
Kelly Clarkson looked like she gained a lot of weight. Has she or does she just look that way because of the sack of a dress she wore? Not that it matters but usually she wears something more hip than a smock.

I thought I saw Buble in that Stayin' Alive lip syncing montage? That's pretty low if they advertised him when he only was on for less than 5 seconds.
Speaking of that video, was that Gwenyth Paltrow showing off her stomach? After having 2 kids in the last couple of years?? Did she have a tummy tuck or something?

I think some of that had to do with the organizations that are getting the proceeds. Like the Boys & Girls Clubs. They're not so much about the families as the activities the kids can do.
And Second Harvest isn't just in LA, it's a nationwide network of foodbanks. I know many people who in tough times have been saved from going hungry by the local Second Harvests. :) I was so glad to see it's benefiting from the donations.

Update on the iTunes store - pretty much every performance from Wednesday's show is on there but none from the Tuesday show. I did download Kelly's "Up To the Mountain"
I'm reading that the theme is Bon Jovi songs but I'm not sure if the source is correct or not.
ETA: Yeah - I saw the reports on Jessica Sierra - crazy!

Ahhh... Bon Jovi I heart Jon Bon Jovi!!!! I was thinking the theme would be rock or 80's theme.
Cant wait!!! I hope they actually show Jon mentoring or I will be highly ticked off.

What Happened To Blake's Hair??

I think this is a great theme week. Bon Jovi has so many great songs.
However, so far the only one I think has done well is Phil. Jordin and LaKiki were totally blah. LaKisha should have sung Always. I wonder what Melinda is singing. I hope it's Never Say Goodbye or I'll Be There For You.

Uh. Blake does not look as cute with dark hair.
I wondered when he'd get back to his "style." I like it!

Ok, despite my initial horror of Blake's hair (my eyes! my eyes!), he ROCKED IT! I LOVE IT!!

HAHAHA - I guess I'm the only one who liked Blake's new hair color. Definitely an improvement IMO. :p
ETA: ash - we x-posted. Glad I'm not alone!

I LOVED BLAKE TONIGHT!!!
I mean, I love him just about every week, but I went crazy this week - hair, song choice, beatbox - the whole package!! :D

Not a huge blake fan but the guy took a chance and I guess it worked out in his favor. The guy can scat like no tomorrow.
I though do not find him good looking.

Tonight rocks!!! I'm curious to see Melinda. I don't see her doing well tonight. Well it depends on her song choice. She has proven ability to hit the low notes and maintain control in the verses. They put her last so I hope that's a good thing!!

I absolutely loved Blake! The performance and the hair rocked!

Yeah, my assumptions about Melinda were right (for me). There's way too much "soul" in her voice for this kind of music. I didn't like it much.

Who do you guys think will go home? It's going to be tough. Since they are combining the votes with last week I think Lakisha might be in trouble.
I think Melinda and Blake are definitely safe. I guess any of the others are a toss up. But I would be shocked if either of them were in the bottom. Phil has surprised me these past few weeks.
I think if I were going strictly on this week, I would pick Lakisha and Jordin to go home.

I'm almost worried that someone not deserving will be the one leaving.
I liked Melinda (of course). She's my favorite for good reason. :)

Okay, my rankings for this week:
1. Blake
2. Melinda
3. Lakisha
4. Phil
5. Jordan
6. Chris
Chris was okay for me, but after Daughtry covering that song last year, I just wasn't impressed at all with this years Chris.
As far as who will be going home tomorrow, I think Phil, Lakisha, and Chris are in trouble.

Of course, I loved Blake tonight - his hair, too!
I totally agreed with Randy and Simon that Melinda has a Tina Turner thing going on. I couldn't put my finger on it, but it was the same vibe last week. I didn't enjoy either performance.
I loved Blake!! I am so glad he did something great this week.
Why did Melinda sing the one BJ song I had never heard of? I find her so annoying.
Jon Bon Jovi looks so good.

Yay Blake! He did so well tonight, I'm super proud of him. It was really original, even DH who hates the show liked his version.
