I heard that there is a special test that they do now and you can find out the gender at 3 mths vs. 5 mths. Is this true?

I am only 2 months. Just curios. My first was a surprise. This one we would like to know so that we can get the rooms ready for my 3 yr old dd and the baby's room.:)

There is a blood test that they can do, very early on.

We had a cvs (genetic testing) at 12 weeks and that tells you the gender (we chose not to find out). Also, my friend did something less invasive (maybe a level 2 ultrasound?) and that told her the gender at around 13 weeks...

My friend had a regular old ultrasound at 14 weeks (we work in the hospital and it was a favor from the ultrasound tech) and could see that it was a boy. I don't think that an ultrasound that early would be very definitive for a girl though. 14 weeks is the very earliest that you can tell by ultrasound.
I found out at 12 weeks because I had a cvs too.

We could tell at 13 weeks we were having a boy. ;)

we had a U/S at 16w and saw it was a girl.
i have had several since - and its still a girl so the tech was right.

I have one friend who found out she was carrying a boy by ultrasound at around 16 weeks, another friend who found out all her triplets were boys by ultrasound at around 14 weeks, and a friend who found out her twins were both girls at around 15-16 weeks...but we took a peek at this one last week when I was 16 weeks, 2 days and couldn't determine gender.

I have heard the blood test you can send away for after 6 weeks is bogus, but you could certainly determine gender definitively with CVS at 12 weeks-ish (though I can't imagine anyone would do CVS just for the purpose of finding out gender).

My friend found out she was having a boy at 11-12 weeks. They did another at 17 weeks and the tech was right.

I was going to the high risk Perinatal center where there equipment was so clear. They told me I was having a girl at 14 weeks. I asked to check at 12 but they couldn't tell.

I had a sonogram somewhere between my 12th and 13th weeks. The tech made a guess then that it was a girl. That was confirmed for sure during my big u/s at 19 weeks. :)

I have a friend who's expecting twins in August. She's known for over a month now that they're a boy and a girl. So that probably would have put her at around 3 months.

My friend was 12 weeks when they found out they were having a girl by a 3D U/S I believe.

We found out it was a boy at 13 weeks by 4D ultrasound as well :)
