What's the reason for the mesh panties the hospital gives you? Just so you don't ruin your own? Is there a reason for them being mesh?

Good question! I don't know but I would guess it's so that they'll fit any size and can stretch to hold those big, bulky pads. And they dry fast!

I figured it's because they'll stretcht o fit every bottom and because hospitals are cheap...
I'm not sure why they give them to you but I'm really glad they did. They're comfortable and stretchy and you should bring home as many pair as possible. The huge pads (and ice packs) you have to wear at first fit so much better in the mesh undies.

I found them horribly uncomfortable. Supposedly they stretch to any size, but I was a plus sized mom the first time around and they dug into my waist and thighs and were painful.

They actually aren't as bad as you think - I actually brought home a ton and wore them for about 2 weeks (I kept bleeding and bleeding). The big ol' pads they give you are huge and the mesh panties are really stretchy. Plus, if you mess one up, you just throw them away (They gave me 2 whole bags to bring home) and get another.
The only thing I found was that they rolled up really easy.

I know someone posted in another thread that they actually found these for sale somewhere in a store, either brick & mortar or online. I don't remember who it was, but hopefully they come in and post about it so I can go buy some. They've been highly recommended by many women in these forums.

I loved the mesh panties. They give them at our hospital because they do stretch to fit all sizes (heck why ruin your own undies) I wore them in the hospital and once I got home I just wore my own grannies and pads, since my bleeding slowed a lot by the time I was released.

jimmysgirl424- I wouldn't worry about buying them, the hospital should give you plenty to go home with.
ITA - don't waste your money on them ;)
As someone who had 2 c-sections, I personally found the mesh panties comfortable in the sense that they didn't irritate or apply any pressure to my incision area. I was able to wear my regular undies throughout both pregnancies, but once I had my c-sections, I had to switch to the mesh panties and/or huge granny undies because my regular panties (bikinis) would irritate my incision area.
And yeah, given that the pads the hospitals give you are a totally odd shape and HUGE (like a 12x12 square), they really DO hold those pads in place!

Because they are awesome! Ok - maybe that's a little extreme, but I am so glad I took several pairs home with me from the hospital. I didn't have to worry about staining my own undies and I could just throw these away.
I think they are mesh because they allow your skin to "breathe" -- a good thing considering what's just gone on :)

I totally agree with this:

Totally random... but I had extras and I cut the crotch and used them as night time bras to hold the breast pads in place and were super comfy that way, too! LOL!:)
I only used them for one day and was so happy to put on some soft, cotton granny panties! (I had bought a 5pk of cheap ones in dark colors.) I felt like things kept sliding around down there. Although I also stopped using the hopital pads the morning of the day I was discharged (so I only used them for 2 days); I hated the way they felt, so bulky! I used overnight maxithins instead.
I guess I'm in the minority!

I think they're sold online so that moms who home birth can order them if they want them. You won't need to buy any, probably.

If you're worried about not having them, you can always give the PP wing of your hospital a call to ask what they allow you to take home--that's good to know anyway. Lidocaine cream, laninsoh, newborn diapers, dry wipes, baby hat, a sitz bath, mesh panties, a squirt bottle, etc.
They only gave me a couple pairs total, but I thought they were great. The bleeding wasn't so much the issue for me, after a couple days it was like a regular period and went down to spotting after a week. (And btw the pads my hospital used were normal shaped, just extra thick.) No, the great thing was you could fit an ice pack in them because they were so stretchy, and if you have stitches you'll need some ice. Next time I'll know to ask for more for home. ETA--I didn't have a c/s.

They were essential after my c-section! The thought of the waist of a normal pair of panties against that part still makes me cringe. The mesh ones are like air but while holding the all important mega pad in place.

Agree with other PP's, these things are WONDERFUL after a C-section. Ugly as sin, and when I heard about them before having DS, I swore I'd NEVER wear them. ;) But I did, and I'm so glad I had a generous supply of them from the hospital. I think I wore them until about a week and a half post partum.

ITA with this. I switched over to my cotton undies the day after I delivered.

They're sold at the lactation center at my hospital. If you want the phone number, PM me.

Me too. Those pads were rediculious. And the mesh panties didn't seem to want to stay on my behind. They kept rolling down. I was happy to get into some cotton granny panties as soon as I got home.

I loved them...up until I got an allergic reaction to them and broke out in a huge rash in my crotch area (the crease of the inner leg and crotch) Yah...not a very pleasant thing to deal with when you're also dealing with a c-section insicion and all the other stuff post partum!! :(

The stretching was great for ice packs., definately couldn't use one with regular grannies.
jimmys- don't buy any just get some from the hospital. You only need them a few days

I loved the mesh panties for those first couple of weeks! I got an extra couple of pair before I was discharged and washed them every day so I always had fresh ones on hand. I had a c/s and because of where the incision was, my 'granny panties' waistband cut right across that area, irritating it, so I couldn't wear them. And I refused to shell out $ for several pairs of high-waisted grannies that I would only wear for a couple of weeks.

I liked the mesh panties. I had bought some cheap ones in case but I wore the mesh ones for the first few days after each baby. I liked the fact that if I got something on them I didn't ruin them and I could just toss them or rinse them out.

I was the one who posted that I saw mesh panties being sold at the Buy Buy Baby store (not the wensite).
I loved them, since I had to guzzle water all day in the hospital and so each of the 100x a day I peed i could just toss the panties and bloody pad out and put on a fresh pair. More breathable, just a nice convenience. And you will inevitably bleed on your panties, so just throwing out the dirty pair makes life easier.
This time i will be more aggressive about asking for as many pair as they'll give me before heading home. Though its nice to know that if I need more, we can buy more at the store.

I was a big fan of the mesh panties, they stretched large enough to accommodate the mega pad I was wearing plus the cool pad thingy and the witch hazel thingy... They're great! I bought cheapie granny panties to use at home and they were ok, but not the same comfort wise.
