View Full Version : 2nd pregnancy: Did your water break at home?

I'm due with my 2nd in September and am expecting a faster delivery, based on what my doc/sisters/friends are telling me.

I believe what really slowed down my first delivery (7 hours labor at home, 22 in the hospital) was that my water didn't break, and it was HUGE. My doc broke it for me at 6 cm and I went to 10 quickly afterwards.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if your 2nd labor started differently than your first and if your water broke at the beginning.

My water broke at the hospital with my first or second push. My labor started about the same, but was more intense and shorter overall. There was no real 'warming up' phase like I'd had the first time - it was strong contrax right away, but the end came much faster ;)

I was induced and the Dr. broke my water.

My labors were actually sort of similar in length (14 and 12 hrs) and started the same, with gentler cx and then increasing intensity. I didn't fly into it or anything. But I was more relaxed, progressed *much* farther at home, and my water broke at the hospital, conveniently on my labor bed, when I was just about complete. I *barely* made it though -- I think I was at the hospital for 30 minutes before the birth.

Good luck!

My water broke at home both times. With #1, I didn't really go into labor though. With #2, I had a csection right away.

My first labor started with a slow leak and no contractions.

My second labor, I labored at home for several hours before my water broke, then I went to the hospital.

I can't comment on my 2nd delivery yet (I'm due in September too), but for my 1st, my water broke at home and I did not go into labor. I had to be induced 3 days later, so even if your water breaks, doesn't necessarily mean that you'll go into labor faster.

My first was an induction due to pre-e (ended up with a c-section due to fetal distress), but with my second my water broke in the driveway right after I returned from an ob appointment.

I didn't labor for very long because I opted for a repeat c-section so I can't really compare labor experiences.

My water broke very dramatically with DD#1. Unfortunately, nothing happened for 8 hours after that and they had to start pitocin. She was born about 6-7 hours later after 2 hours of pushing.

With DD#2, I started having very regular contrax around 12:30 in the morning. Got to the hospital around 2 and was 7 cm. My water broke around 5:30 and DD was born around 7:30 after a couple of pushes.

So my labors and deliveries were quite different.

Ohana- That makes me feel better because I had exactly the same labor with my first - huge gush after my water broke and lots of it and then no contractions. I'm hoping to avoid having to be induced this time.

1st pregnancy - My water broke at home and labor was 17 hours. I had to have pitocin because I wasn't having regular contractions. I pushed for 45 minutes.

2nd pregnancy - Water never did break (Dr. broke right as I started to push). Was in labor for 8 hours. I thought I still had more hours of laboring, so I put off going to the hospital. We arrived at the hospital at 8:21 a.m. and DS #2 was born at 8:48 a.m. So, yes, second labors and delivery went much, much quicker in my case. With this baby, I probably pushed for only 5 minutes before he was born.

My water broke late in the first delivery. About 3/4 of the way in counting 17 hours of labor.

With the second one, my water broke right after arriving at the hospital with contractions, so about an hour into my 3 hour labor.

#1 - doc broke it at the hospital to try to get things going

#2 - broke at home after about 45 minutes of labor (total labor was only 97 minutes so I am guessing I was about 6-7cm at that point)

Water broke with DD#1 at 38 weeks.
I had to be induced at 40 weeks for lack of weight gain issues with DD#2.

1st - water broke at home and DS was born about three hours later

2nd - went into labor at home and water broke (on its own) right before I started pushing (at the hospital). DD was born about three and a half hours after labor started.

My water broke prior to contractions both times. Labor started immediately after my water broke. Both my labors were relatively quick (12 hours w/ 2.5 hours of pushing and 3.5 hours).

1st PG: Water broke at home in a series of HUGE gushes. Went to hospital, but had no contractions and ended up being put on pitocin. Labored 14 or so hours and pushed for 2.5 of those.

2nd PG: Water broke while laboring at home. Very different experience--it leaked here and there but no huge gush as with #1. When I went to the hospital I was 9 cm, was 10 cm minutes later, pushed 3-4 times and DS was born.
