Our best friend's son is turning 4. What's a cool gift for a 4 year old boy?

My son is 3 and in a class with 3-4 year olds. They seem to really like cars, building toys (tinkertoy, licoln log, blocks, gears, ect) and trains. Dinasoars tend to be big too, particularly T-Rex. Board type games also get interesting around this age. My son loves a game called Kids on Stage, which is a simple Charades game that requires no reading. Hulla Baloo (sp) by Candoo is another fun one that is more active and that even younger kids 2.5 or so can play, if he has a younger sibling. Play Dough stuff is also alot of fun at this age.

Another vote for dinosaur stuff. We just went to a bday party for a 4yo boy and dinosaurs were the toy of choice. The bday boy got several Imaginext dinosaurs. Here's a link to some at Wal-Mart: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/search-ng.gsp?search_constraint=0&search_query=imaginext%20dinosaur&adid=0100000031361411502498

We gave the birthday boy the Melissa and Doug "See and Spell" toy (http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-and-Doug-See-Spell/dp/B0007Y4DLG). It is for ages 4 and up, and I figured he might like it as he is learning to spell simple words in preschool. I have also given this toy to another 4yo and she really seemed to like it, so I figured it was "kid tested and approved." To be honest, the bday boy definitely preferred his dinosaurs.

Legos are a big hit with my almost 3.5 year old son.

Books personalized with a child's name are also often popular at this age with children just starting to recogonize their name in print.

Anything with construction trucks is a favorite of my 3 yr old.
