We brought home our first golden last May - his name is Butterscotch (Butter). He was born March 23, 2004.

Two questions...
1) Do y'all trim your dogs' fur? Maggie is so shaggy that she looks fat, but it is all fur. I would trim her if someone told me she was sweltering hot - or if she seemed sweltering hot, but I really love her furry and her shag makes her look so goofy. It's adorable.
2) Still related to fur, while Maggie has very long, soft fur, Gretchen has very short, wiry fur. She turned 1 on January 9, so I guess she's almost 1.5 years. Is this her adult coat or will her fur change to be more like Maggie's?
Jane&Andy
06-29-2005, 08:23 AM
I haven't trimmed Butter's fur. But he's just a few months younger than Gretchen and he doesn't seem to have all his adult fur just yet. His tail has filled out, his chest is very furry, and he has long feathers on his front legs but his body fur isn't very long yet. Not exactly wirey but not fluffy like his chest. I'm hoping his fur will fill out more. I've read that Goldens aren't physically mature til they're 2 and mentally around 3.

The only time I have had Tucker trimmed was for our engagement pics and for a few special occasions. For about 2 years though, he had an undiagnosed thyroid problem and his hair really thinned out. He's been on medication for about 8 months now and his coat is REALLY thick and long, so I might have him trimmed again. We do trim the hair between his paws very regularly. I don't remember Tucker's hair being different as a puppy but it was so long ago.
This came up in a cooking thread of all places...
Do any of your dogs like to be vaccuumed? Mine loves the hard plastic hand tool. When I'm vaccuuming the rugs, he'll lay down and try to nose his way under the tool. Very helpful when the whole reason I am sweeping is to get rid of dog hair :)
He also loves the blow dryer. Every morning, he gets a blow dry too!

As for fur trimming, the groomer has strict instructions  to not touch his feathers. She only trims his paws and sometimes his ears need a touch up, since they seem to get extra fuzzy on the top.

Sunny didn't have her full adult coat until 3. She was the featherless Goldie until then.
The only thing I trim on her are the hairs between her toes. We have tons of burrs in our yard so keeping that excess hair cleaned up and short helps to keep her from picking up those burrs in her pads.
As to her body coat, I just brush her like crazy with both a regular brush and a slicker brush which helps to pullout any loose undercoat.

Ok...I think I need to see some more pictures of your dogs' fur please. ;)
I really love Maggie's fur. It is so soothing to run my fingers through her soft fur. That's partially why we won't co-sleep with the baby when she gets here, because then I couldn't have fur right next to me. :p

It's so good to see so many people who love goldens! Although I have two cats right now (stupid apartment living), the love of my life was my dog Autumn. She was the most wonderful, loving, loyal dog that I could have asked for and writing about her actually still makes me tear up a little even though she's been gone for over two years.
Gayle, I'm not sure if you remember me or not, but we spoke on the phone two years ago. You helped me make the most difficult decision of my life to put Autumn down. I can't even tell you how thankful I am that you were there for me, a total stranger, and gave me such compassionate advice.
Anyway, I'll need to scrounge up some pictures of Autumn so everone can see how gorgeous she was. And of course, I'm not biased. :)

Question about Mats:
Haley keeps on getting them behind her ears, everyday it seems like there is a new one. I have been cutting them out, and last night she got very upset with me and actually ran when she saw the scissors. She actually is beginning to look silly with all of these shorter hairs. I know part of it is that she plays with Riley (MIL's golden) and Lexi (SIL's boxer) and they hold eachother at the ear area, and the other part is her hair is so shinny, and silky. Riley has never gotten 1 mat in his whole life and has puffy, and almost wirey fur. Do any of you have any suggestions on what I can do so I don't have to cut her beautiful fur everyday?
TIA

I do remember you mierin, and I remember the conversation. Its always the most painful decision, but somehow, we get through it. And, when we love these dogs this much, it can be the kindest gift we can give them.
And of course, part of the healing happens when you can let your heart be open to a new puppy/dog, and share all that love once again.
Please post pics of Autumn, I would so love to see her.

Gayle, here's a picture. It was a few months before she died. If you can't tell by the wrapping paper, it's Christmas. She always loved Christmas morning and every year we gave her a huge bone to keep her out of the paper and boxes. Since it was her last Christmas, though, we let her play a little. :D

I don't think so. She slept outside my bedroom for all of her 13 years. Even when I was away at school.
Someone actually said to me a while ago, "Why would you want some badly bred dog with bad hips? Of course, that's just my professional opinion." I can't even tell you how livid and hurt I was. The person who said it obviously has never had or known a golden!

Autmn looks so sweet. I think these dogs of this breed are actually Angels who just choose to inhabit Goldie bodies on earth.
And what sort of a professional would say this:
"Someone actually said to me a while ago, "Why would you want some badly bred dog with bad hips? Of course, that's just my professional opinion." I can't even tell you how livid and hurt I was. The person who said it obviously has never had or known a golden!"
Where do people get off that all goldies have bad hips? I have quite a bit of experience in dogs ( I was a show breeder/competitor of English Springers for 20 years) and I probably would have ripped that person a new one.
It ticks me off the kinds of assumptions people make about pure bred dogs. Personally, I don't want anything BUT a pure bred dog, and I'll give anyone my reasoning at any time.
Sorry to rant, that statement that the supposed "professional" made, just really ticked me off.

Gayle, I should have finished the story. The "professional" wasn't a professional at all, but my sister-in-law's asshat boyfriend. He has several mastiffs (all intact so that he can breed them and recoup his "investment"). They seem to be nice dogs, but he seems more interested in how they look and what kind of image they provide for him. Frankly, the whole thing just disgusts me so much, I avoid talking to him. And after his thoughtless, cruel remark about Autumn, I'd rather not talk to him at all.
You're absolutely right, it's amazing how ignorant some people are. Good thing there are people like you to keep my favorite breed around.
And because this thread could always use more pictures, here's another of my baby. It's the day we brought her home. Sorry it's so big. I don't know how to make it smaller!

Hey! I was just wandering through the boards I never visit, and thought I'd introduce my girls and ask some advice.
This is Grendel. We brought her home as a pup in June 2002. She turned 3 in April, is too fat after living with my MIL and her eternal table scraps last year (we all did, but only she partook of the scraps!), and is just the most lovable lump. She is truly our child. This is a few years ago, at the beach:

My parents have a 12 year old yellow lab, and he has had hip dysplasia since he was a pup (can you believe the breeder said she would take him back and give us a new one, when we found out when he was 2). My mom has always given him glucosimine (sp?). I found treats that also have them in it so he thinks he is getting a treat, when he is really getting his medicine! He really likes the ones I just bought him from Flint River (www.flintriver.com) they are "for older dogs" and I think they get 3 a day or something like that. It is worth a shot, and wouldn't hurt. My mom also gives him this other stuff that I can't think of the name of, but it has side effects and he has to get blood tests every six months. Since he is old and in a lot of pain, the pain outweighs the side effects.

We left on vacation on 8/19 so he went back to the breeder (DH's aunt and uncle) while we were gone. When we got back he was leash trained and new how to sit and shake. I was so proud! ;)
Here are some pics of Max.

he's very cute. Seeing those pictures makes me miss that puppy stage so bad! I'm still trying to teach mine how to shake. He's done it once now. But I've only been working on it sporadically.

Thanks, Butter is cute too. I can't wait until Max has all his shots and we can go to the beach. I am totally loving this puppy stage. It was hard the first few days, but he is such a lover it's hard to stay frustrated.

thanks. :) the puppy stage can be very challenging. Butter is a year and a half old now so I look back at that stage with rose colored glasses and easily forget how much work it can be. Although, he's still a lot of work, he's just a lot bigger now.
We have a dog park nearby and we started taking him there as soon as he got his last shots. He has fun there. We'd go more often except he needs a bath every time b/c he likes to roll in the mulch. We just discovered the dog beach (a little further away) this year.

I need some help from some fellow golden-owners. Our golden retriever is a little over 2 years old now. There was quite a dramatic shift right around her second birthday - less energy, sleeping more. We figured it was because she was finally outgrowing her puppy stage and becoming an adult.
Now we are worried she is depressed. DH and I have never had a golden before, but it is obvious that they need far more attention than other dogs. Fortunately I can work from home, so I usually stay at home with her 2 days a week. We take her for nightly walks. She shares the bed with us at night. We try to play with her, but her tennis balls get gross and slobbery and she no longer enjoys fetch. Instead of "retrieving" she becomes "possessor" and doesn't bring the object back. The vet says she's healthy.
Do goldens just become very lethargic at this age? She is so expressive and she just seems to be moping around unless we are playing with her. Maybe it's silly - but her face just looks sad.
Does anyone have any advice on cheering up our dog? Or are we just crazy and she really is happy?

My Haley is 2 1/2 and still has tons of energy. I have seen a shift in her behavior, now she listens a lot better and is not destructive at all. I can't really speak about whether or not your dog is depressed or not. It seems like she is getting a good amount of attention.
My only suggestion is Haley likes to play with the blue racket balls the best. They get slimy, but not like the tennis balls that she sometimes finds. Maybe you want to try that? What about playdates? Haley also goes on a lot of playdates and they are great because when she gets home she just sleeps and wants nothing to do with me because she is so tierd.
I also wanted to ask if she has been tested for lyme's disease. My MIL's vet swore that her golden didn't have it, but after Haley was diagnoised I made sure Riley got tested too. Haley's vet did the test as part of her yearly examination because there are so many cases in our area.
Riley seemed to have lost his spirit, was moping a lot unless we really got him engaged in a game of fetch, and would just sleep on the couch. He also was not eating right, but everyone just said it was because he was a picky eater. No one thought this was abnormal except for me, and guess what he tested positive, was put on medicine and 2 days later we caught him playing in the backyard voluntarily with Haley (which he hadn't done in a long time). He is now a very happy boy, and his spirit is back. Maybe this is something that you want to ask your vet to do. Sometimes vets don't think to test for it unless the dogs are experiencing joint pain. It is an 80 dollar test and the antibiotic is about 30 dollars. Hope this helps!

Maggie - She has never been tested for Lyme Disease. The thought had never actually even occurred to me! She does seem to eat a healthy amount. I think it would definitely be worth the $80 to make sure. Thank you so much for posting that!
We were actually talking this weekend that we should set playdates for her to maybe help. I think she does miss interaction with other dogs and we just aren't ready to handle getting another one right now! :D Unfortunately none of our friends that live nearby have dogs. We were thinking of asking our neighbors, but we haven't talked to them much. I don't want them to think we're childless weirdos that treats our dog too much like a child. :P How does one go about finding playmates for their dog???
Maggie8202
10-03-2005, 03:25 PM
We have always lucked out finding Haley playdates. Randomly we found Haley's brother that happened to live a couple of blocks away, so she plays with him. I have also set up playdates with my hairdressers dogs, and of course, my aunt's dog, parents dog and friends. Through talking it has always seemed that owners of only 1 dog are in the same boat and are looking to find a playmate. Haley's brother's parents are always asking us to leave her when we are running around because it gives them a break! I know what you mean about randomly asking people!!
When Haley was diagnoised with Lyme's disease she was showing NO symptoms, she was eating lots. I think it affects each dog differently, and depends upon when you catch it. Pretty interesting, dogs don't get it nearly as bad as humans.

We have a new golden - we are fostering her for the golden retriever rescue that I volunteer with (www.ragom.org).
She came up here to Minnesota from Louisiana. She was already in foster care down there after being rescued from a neglect/abuse situation, but her foster dad had to evacuate and couldn't take her with him. She has a severe flea allergy and is recovering from a flea infestation. She came north with the hopes that she would do better in a colder climate and because she's so damn sweet! ;)
She will be with us for a few weeks to gain some weight and regain some strength (she is still underweight from the neglect/abuse) and then she will be up for adoption!

I've been lurking in this thread for forever and i can't stand it anymore! Your babies are so cute!!!!
I was raised with Goldens and hopefully DH and I are getting ours next month!!! We're getting our baby for free, and while i would normally go get a rescue dog, i can't pass up a free golden puppy!! We're really excited and feel like we've been waiting forever (well, we kind of have, but that's another story!) I get more excited seeing all the pictures of your babies.
So hopefully in a month or so i'll be able to post pictures of my new baby!!!
notkk Oh that poor baby!!!! I would love to get involved with a fostering goldens, but i know me and i would never give them back!!!
I love all the beautiful goldens!
I don't have a golden retreiver, but they have been my favorite dog since I was young. I used to dog-sit for our neighbor's golden in elementary school, and since then I was hooked. As luck would have it, my husband grew up with goldens, so I get my fix whenever we visit my in-laws.

notk- I had to post after your message. This is our boy, adopted from Ragom! His Name is Dorado (the Spanish word for Golden). We've had him for 2 years now. He was a rescue from a high kill shelter in St. Louis. We don't know his history and they guessed him to be between 8-10 months old when we got him. He's a great dog, though on the chubby side right now and on a diet that he is NOT enjoying. He has had some anxiety issues, but we have worked through most of them. Ragom is a great organization and we are so happy to have found him. Keep up the great foster work!

RAGOM is a great organization. I found them in June and started volunteering in July. I am constantly amazed at what the organizaton manages to accomplish with a staff of volunteers.
Thank you for adopting a rescue dog!
meganth
I thought that I would need to take home every Golden I meet, but there are so many great people who want to love each dog - the other fosters, the adoptive families - it's easier knowing that the dog is going to such a great home. If you don't have time to foster, there are all kinds of other volunteer opportunities. At RAGOM we always need fosters, but we also always need people who can help transport dogs and conduct home visits for prospective adoptive families. If there is a retriever rescue in your area, I'm sure they have similar volunteer needs.

Yep, the fur on his head is like a little mohawk! It starts on the top of his cute little head and goes all the way down his nose. People comment on it all of the time. (...and he's tormenting the cat as I type)
We have considered getting involved in fostering with Ragom now that I am home (quit my job in April), but I am not sure I have the patience for training the younger dogs. I'd be better with older ones I think. Do you ever get to choose or do you have to take any dog that needs a place to go?

Awww! I was "raised with cats" but my fiance has a 2 1/2 year old Golden (who likes me better now! ha!). Looking at all of these pictures makes me so sad that I missed her puppy stage and the evil ex was there. Do any of yours have an obsession with licking? Ours licks us constantly. It is her favorite thing to do. I've totally turned her into a girl dog... her favorite toy is a pink purse I got her from Target. I allow it to be an "inside toy" only and she carries it around and it cracks us up. I also got rid of her red collar (not a good look with her shade of fur) an she has a pretty purple one as well as a VT collar and leash set now. Here are some pictures of her from last winter:

Haley is a licker when she is tierd. She will try to lick my toes, hands, fingers or whatever is showing. If a person isn't next to her she will suck on her pottery barn chennile throw (hers because she sucked it so much I won't use it anymore) or she really likes the way our new couch tastes. She usually begins her licking routine around 9, and within 20 minutes she is asleep. -- Weird, I know!!

Hi Everyone!
I'm so glad that there is a Golden thread. We have an 8 year old sweet girl named Sydney. We adopted her a year ago and can't imagine our lives without her. She's really the best decision we ever made. We are in the process of moving to FL from GA so she is staying with my in-laws right now. I've only been away from her for 2 days, but I miss her so much! We're going back to GA in a week and will bring her back with us then...I can't wait to see her. :-)

Our Buster is a licker. Almost annoying at times. He licks everything, luckily my DD loves it (she is 7 months). ;)
Bailey is the "cuddler." He LOVED stuffed toys before Buster (then they turned into tug-of-war casualties, LOL!) So now, he just holds a piece of his Costco bed in his mouth. Funny boy...I have a pic of this somewhere...

Jane&Andy Thanks! Love Butter's Halloween bandanna!
Sabine will sit next to one of us and steadily lick everywhere.. it almost seems therapeutic for her. She doesn't lick herself excessively, just us. She also loves having her soft toys in her mouth. I think she has an oral fixation just like my horse, Beaux (he LOVES having his bit in his mouth or anything else). Crazy animals. I have not seen her sucking. She probably just hasn't thought of it yet!
How are your Goldens at retrieving? Sabine is iffy - if you're on the deck, she'll maybe retrieve once or twice. If you are in the yard with her, she'll retrieve usually from five to seven times. And it always seems to make her have to go to the bathroom - nine times out of 10 she has to take a potty break after retrieving once. Maybe she's just extra weird? (All that time she spent with her single father! ;) )
Koala_Gurl
10-28-2005, 03:40 PM
On land, Bailey is a good "go getter," but he won't bring it back. He'll just go fetch the ball and lay on his bed w/it. Buster would retrieve until he passed out from exhaustion.
Now, if there is water involved...Bailey will actually retrieve & bring the toy back (and usually cheats and heads back out in the water waiting for the toy to be thrown again.) :)

Rusty is an obsessive licker, too. When our Shepherd mix was sick, he licked her incessantly (we later found out the spot he had been licking for years was where the tumor grew), and our other chow mix (with Rott), he would lick his eyes and ears and paws.

Thanks for the welcome! He really has been such an amazing dog! Couldn't ever teach him anything but shake, though. He was abused pretty badly before we got him at about 6 months old. To be honest, he didn't really start to resemble a 'normal', not so skittish dog til he was at least 3 or 4. And, he's a bed hog! And he'll always come sit with you when he knows you're upset. 65 pound lap dog.

We've had a lot of trouble lately with him eating sticks and then getting sick. Its cost us hundreds and hundreds of dollars in vet bills - no surgery yet but x-rays, bloodwork, iv fluids and medications.
Any ideas for how to keep him from eating sticks aside from duct taping his mouth shut when he steps outside the house? We're trying to keep our yard stick free but there's still sticks all over the place when we walk him. A stick here and there is ok but it doesn't seem to take many to get him sick. This last time as soon as we realized he was getting sick we induced vomiting and he was fine after that. So at least we're learning how to deal with this but its still very stressful and not fun for him.

Thanks in advance!

My favorite book was Golden Retrievers for Dummies, and I have looked through a lot.
Toby is adorable!
Question: This maybe a weird one, but Haley's feathers on her tail and her butt area are very long, we are talking 9 inches! They are beautiful, but everytime she goes to the bathroom, poop gets all over the feathers and I have to wash her down. Has anyone trimmed those feathers before? I had read in a book that said a Golden's coat shouldn't get cut, only the little hairs between their toes could be trimmed. I just can't handle cleaning her up 2 times a day! I also don't want to make her look silly either.
TIA

yep. we've done it. Actually DH did it and I was pissed. He gave him a blunt cut right across his butt, it looked terrible. If he would have just waited for me I could have at least given him a more stylish and subtle trim.

When we take ours to the groomer, we have them trim up the feathers (they are still long, but not 9 inches.) You can definitely trim a golden, in fact, they often need the feathers trimmed, and the ears too. You shouldn't shave a golden or give them a "summer" cut, but a trim to keep them looking good is totally fine. :)

Bailey's feathers are also long - but they're only a problem when he has the runs - otherwise he doesn't get dirty everyday. You might want to adjust Haley's diet because his BM's shouldn't be so moist that they get stuck in his fur.

I don;t know about Haley, but with my dog this only happens when he makes himself sick from eating sticks and yard debris - unfortunately he does it fairly often.

DH and myself went away for a couple of days and my MIL watched Haley. I have been feeding Haley only her kibble from Flint River all summer, and my MIL likes to add things to the dogs food. So no doubt Haley isn't feeling right because she wasn't used to the people food. Unfortunately I ask her not to feed her people food, but she feels bad and doesn't listen to me. I know that Haley gets soo much love when she stays with MIL, I don't let it get me mad.
On another note, I have been watching how Haley squats (nothing better to do??) and I have noticed that the poop lands right on top of the feathers, so even if it is solid, a some feathers get dirty.
I did try to trim her today. It came out horrible and I need to try and fix it up tomorrow. I think she is embarrased because when DH came home she sat down and wouldn't let him see. :)
What a great thing to be talking about on a message board huh? :)

Yup, she also has been having this fasination with eating sticks lately! There is also a bunny in the backyard and she has been eating the droppings too. They are so tiny she finds them before me.

Ok Golden fans I have a question for ***. DH and I are thinking about adding a dog to our family in the nearish future. I grew up with a German Shep, Golden and Poodle. Unfortunately we have family members with significant allergies and the hair becomes an issue. If it wasn't unrealistic, I'd say DON'T VISIT. But in general conversation have heard the name "goldenoodle." ie. Golden crossed with large poodle. Don't freak! I just wanted to ask if anybody as any experience with the Goldenoodle? Thanks!

I don't have any experience with them, and am not a big fan of hybrid breeds. But hey, that's just **.

We are thinking of adding a Golden to our family in the next month or two, we have been trying to decide between another Lab, we have a yellow lab now, or a Golden, I grew up with Goldens and I am just so in love with them. Our lab just turned two so she is finally out of the puppy stage, so why not start all over, right?!!

SKB - Not sure about a goldenoodle, but my parents have a labradoodle....lab and standard poodle mix. I gotta say, my stepmom bought the dog while my dad was out of town because she thought it was "soooo cute". Well, of course its cute - all puppies mixed with labs look like labs when they are babies, its not until they start to get bigger does their look change.
Anyway, Benny is probably the dumbest dog I've ever met in my entire life (and I mean that in the nicest possible way). My stepmom can't do anything the easy way and when she said they wanted a medium size dog, I suggested a lab or golden..since they are great with kids and generally good family dogs (I grew up with labs and have one now), my little sister is 7. Well, she went out and got the Labradoodle and it *just* turned a year old and is the size of the a Great Dane, with the brain of a doorknob.
I've heard from others I know with labradoodles that theirs are also not exactly smart, which is odd because its said that Poodles are very smart dogs. I'm not really fond of the cross-breeding, and if the pet hair is an issue maybe stick with a full poodle or even something smaller like a Bichon.

I'm no help with golden doodles.
Chelsea524 - ***'re a brave soul to start puppyhood all over again! We started it 3yrs ago and we're still there. :p
Butter just turned 3. He's still all puppy. 68lbs of puppy. He needs more exercise but when I take him for walks he eats sticks until he clogs his intestines and makes himself sick. So no more walks (and I do watch him and tell him no when he picks up sticks but he still manages to eat enough to get sick). I think a second dog would do him a lot of good but we already have 3 cats and 1 toddler. Another dog is just too much!
Here he is enjoying DS's water table - best water bowl ever!

Thought I would bump up this thread.
My MIL's golden (she lives nextdoor so we "share" him) had 2 grand mal seizures last night. He is 6 years old. For the past 2 years every so often he would do this weird shake for a couple of seconds, but the vet seemed to think it was nothing. Anyways he is still in the hospital and we are waiting for a catscan (my grandmothers dog just passed from a tumor on the brain so we want to rule that out). The vet said that he saw many dogs with seizures last night because of the heat.
Here is a picture of Riley, please keep him in your prayers.

Poor Riley!
I have a cat who has seizures periodically. He was only about 2 when it started. We didn't do the catscan b/c the vet said it was unlikely to be a brain tumor. He was on phenobarb for awhile but we were able to take him off. He has maybe one a year now. It's very scarey to see though. He fell down the stairs while having a seizure once and that was horrible.

Riley is still at the vet waiting the catscan. Unfortunately he won't be coming home till tomorrow morning because he will have to be sedated for the scan. We should have the results tonight though. The vet said he is fine now and having a good time barking at the other dogs.
The vet said that the scan wasn't absolutely necessary either, we are doing just because of what we just went through loosing my grandmothers dog. They also said that being that he just had these 2, we don't absolutly have to medicate either, but I think we are going to. My MIL is very afraid of not being home and him having one. She was the one that was with him when they happened and I also think that she never wants to see him like that again because he really is her baby (we joke that Riley took my DH's place when he moved out and we got married.)
Thanks for the well wishes! Hopefully the scan will be clear.
Jane&Andy
07-10-2007, 10:27 AM
yea, it wasn't until my cat had his third that the vet was interested in medicating him.
I hope the cat scan shows that everything is all clear!!! I'm sure I would have been much more tempted to go with a cat scan if I'd recently had a pet with a brain tumor. But when the vet brought it up he first talked about how very unlikely it was that he had a brain tumor and then asked if a catscan would be feasible.
